Saved From the Crusher: 1959 Meteor Rideau!

- Hi! Agent 303 has a soft spot for these old Fords, and this time he's bought a 1959 Meteor Rideau to save it from being turned into a Kia Magentis. These were Canadian- market cars based on similar Ford models, with different grilles and trim. This one was probably equipped with a 292 or a 352 originally, and had a 3-speed column-shift transmission. It's in pretty tough shape, but still has a lot of good parts to donate to a restoration project, so Dean decided to put it in his collection.
He has a similar 2 door example, so we hope someone will take on this fun Ford project.
Thanks to everyone who subscribed to our channel, and thanks for all of your "likes" and comments. More junker mayhem on the way soon! Cheers from all of us here at CWMC.
I know a guy in Calgary that has a 59 Meteor 4 door sedan base model with a six cylinder engine and 3 speed transmission. He has owned the car for over 20 years and still drives it.
I like learning about these Canadian version cars.
Dean is an asset to the channel! Great attitude.
I agree! he still needs some cowboy boots and a cowboy hat, when he does his greasy flips segment.
shes still in good shape. thanxs for saving her. we like her,,,
5:41 - "It's not like you're expecting to find Jimmy Hoffa's body" - LOL!
That's a worthy save. The car next to it could use a save, too.
Every one of these videos makes my '62 Chevy Biscayne look like a gem despite it's many flaws. It's a four door with a straight six, standard everything, radio-delete, shitty paint, cracked steering wheel, and I have to hide the upholstery under Mexican blankets, but I can jump in and drive it anywhere without a worry. The hula girl on the dash is a nice accessory.
+1955RodHot Hey, thanks for checking it out... Yeah, any classic that is on the road is plenty good enough as far as we're concerned! I'd drive a '62 'Scayne anytime... Cheers from me and Stella!
1955RodHot I love a 62 Biscayne 4 door 6.... what a dream. What a car. Great times 😊
As long as the old girl drives and your happy. Thats all that matters at the end of the day...Keep the memories alive
There was a mint '59 Meteor Rideau 2 door hardtop with skirts and a Continental kit at the Goodguys car show in Scottsdale, AZ this last February. Actually lots of Canadian market cars there, as AZ becomes Little Canada in the winter months when retired Canadians come to their desert winter homes.
+Maindrian Pace That's interesting! A lot of Canadians (my Grandfather included) used to winter in Florida, but maybe Arizona is where it's at now! Well, I hope you guys enjoy seeing some weird Canadian iron there now and then... Cheers!
I think the hood opens up backwards,on those..Nice Car!
They did! It was considered a 'safety feature'! - so your hood could never unlatch and smack back into the windscreen! (back in the days when we had to worry about such events!) Ha!
On a sunny October afternoon in 1958 my Dad came home with a brand new 1959 Meteor Rideau 500 ragtop. Powder blue & white with a white top. 352 V8. To my 8 yr old eyes that was about the most beautiful thing I'd ever seen. I remember it caused quite a sensation on the block. Half the neighbourhood came to look. That was a pretty radical year for cars and ours was the first in the area it seems. Before long the street had fins everywhere. They were all so cool I was sure they'd be around forever. Like I said I was 8 :~)
My favorite, coming out of the fifties into the sixties style and design. Perfect.
I like that to my knowledge of my father had one when I was a real young youngster good memories just like that my dad had a two tone black and white.
I like the 62 Merc wagon over to the side of it.
A light misting of motor oil will do wonders in keeping these cars from rusting further, and it will protect the metal trim from pitting. Its a very cheap prevention. From an environmentl stndpoint, think of all the resources that will be needed to fabricate or repair the rusted out panels. Under the hood should be sprayed as well to protect, and keep rodents out
Love your vids! Makes me long for the days when i hung around my friends who owned a junkyard in upstate NY. You seem like a fun lot to hang around with! And Stella just makes it better! Cheers, from Philadelphia, PA!
the glass amongst other things looks hard to find. good job on saving her. i bet the guy you sold her too really appeeciated the parts car!
some nice tail lights to, definitely a great parts car if nothing else
+Shake Rattle and Roll Hot Rods Yeah! A really good parts car... way too far gone to be worth the huge amount of work it would take to put it together again... Cheers!
Get them all, every part as well, they are priceless, these US 50s 60s cars are four wheeled art, to send them to scrap is beyond evil...save as many as possible.
The dog sells it all, love her...........
I heard someone say "Are you done buying stuff?" to Dean. Laughing to myself... in the context of old cars...that question should never be asked.
Aussie ford's had those round tail lights rite upto 68-69, I had 67 XR falcon with round tail lights, fords round tail lights are some of the very coolest ever made.
still snowing? It"s amazingly warm for this time of year here in New Zealand-about 20C during the day-- love it!!!
Not only is it A heap but it's also A compost heap! Can't turn down A twofer!! Good luck with it you have A lot of nice part's.
I had a four door one of these, although they were marketed here in Oz as Fairlanes. Bought it 40 years ago for $175.AU. Worth a lot of money these days even not done up. I have no idea where it ended up. I took out the back seat and was using it as a work car carrying all my tools and paint. lol
And another great car is saved. You guys deserve a medal for saving so many great old machines and making them live again. What you do is so awesome.Keep up the good work!
Hey, thanks for checking it out! Always enjoy hearing from others with the old car sickness! Love the 58 Wolseley! Cheers from me and Stel.
Thanks. Glad you like it - I keep showing other people your channel because I like the way you do things so much. Cheers from the UK!
I would think any Meteor would be worth saving, due to the rarity of these Canadian-only cars ;)
I have seen almost all of your videos and love your channel. I am a Canadian as well. (Born Northport, Nova Scotia) but currently live in the states. Looking to move back home in a few years. I love classics and the comedy you throw into your videos and watching them makes me want to return home as quickly as I can. I LOVE the Frazier you found and really enjoyed all the updates. Keep up the good work. :)
Hey thanks for the note and for checking out the vid... Always a treat to hear from anyone else who likes this kind of thing like I do! All the very best from me and the girls and the rest of the Agents here...
Sweet, lots of good trim stuff, good video, Thanks
that meteor reminds me of the Simca Vedette out of France and a friend bought one in 1960 when we were both in the USAF....great look!
There's a collector of Rideaux in Rocky Mountain House, Alberta that you might be interested in He is featured in My Classic Car, season 17, episode 4. Extremely interesting cars.
To me the 59 Fords were the meanest looking of all full size Fords ever made. And despite the 59 Chevrolets looking hotter and meaner, the conservatively styled Fords of that year outsold Chevies. I bet that also the case here in Canada with Meteor versions..
your videos of classic cars are awesome
Save all of them.
C.C .. Cool cars.
Rare car!
love it, squirrel turds and all!! I have "59" two door. Nice thing about these late 50's Fords, they look good with a slight rake and mags, or lowered down with wide whites and caps! Not sure which direction I'm going with mine yet!!
+Corey Janiksela Hey, thanks for checking it out... Yeah these 59's are a favorite of ours, too. Cheers from me and Stella!
Well, now you've done it. You have stirred up The Poet. It's bad enough to put up with the little turd under normal circumstances, but he has declared a state of siege, and has dashed off a bunch of nonsense in response to your response to his previous nonsense. I think I shall go outside for a while. There's a nice tree out there with a high-hanging limb that should I position myself correctly and stand there for a day or two, it might break off and bash my head in, thus ending this torture.
The Boys Of Cold War Motors
The Boys of Cold War Motors, they be a mighty breed.
They crave no rest, they want no praise, they sprout from hardy seed.
These Boys ain’t long on polish, they ain’t no upper crust.
They got that way from many years of breathing Bondo dust.
No wasteland is too far for them when once they get the scent
Of fenders old and rusted, of bumpers warped and bent.
They wander thru the graveyards, their mission to retrieve
The wrecks of generations, The Crusher to reprieve.
Some may think them sainted, some may think them cursed,
Some may think them gentlemen, but they ain’t seen the worst.
If you want to see The Boys yourself, I’ll tell you how you might,
Just park an Edsel in your yard, and they’ll show up that night.
The Boys of Cold War Motors observe a noble creed.
They seek no fortune, want no fame, a ratchet’s all they need.
If you’re a weary traveler, they’ll welcome you with cheer,
Then while you sleep they’ll part your ride and drink up all your beer.
Just where do these Boys come from, you very well might ask,
Well, I might try to tell you, but that would be a task.
Some say they all be spirits, some say they do not know...
Some say they just appeared when it was forty-two below.
You’ll see them when it’s cold enough to freeze a preacher’s fart,
They’re looking for a piece of junk to try to make it start.
To serve the need of unknown gods I guess that’s why they’re here,
When as for me I’d sit by fire and have another beer.
These Boys don't seem to think my way and that much is for sure.
For rusty hulks and unloved junk they’re happy to endure
The bitter cold of Arctic winds and frozen turf afoot,
To seek the treasures in the weeds of long ago kaput.
And when the day is over, when doobie blends with hooch,
Reports from all participants are made to Madame Pooch.
A low profile is Stella’s style, and silence is her mode,
But this joint would collapse today should she change her abode.
And you may ask the point of this, and when will it be done.
The end is surely not in sight while they are having fun.
I think that all these dudes might say that when their lights go out,
Just bury them with tools in hand in Detroit runabouts.
The Unknown Poet
marcomalo02 that's awesome
I wish I could remember writing it.
That was great!!!
Another tank returns to base.
When your on site and don't know what you got, you can always look at the tail lights to get the year. When are you gonna get a building for your museum? Send my luv to Stel!
What happen to the one next to the one you saved ?
I do hope you were able to save it as well.
Can't wait to see yours restored.
The old white 1959 Rideau sitting next to it appeared to have most of his glass intact, also.
Dean...says...."it's soo cool"....but wait until he gets his hands on those sharp edges doing body work.....won't be so cool then. Hey, happy you're saving that 59 meteor.
+Accuracy Marked Hey, thanks for checking it out... This one wont cut anyone up though, it's strictly for parts! Cheers from us here!
hey cwm! im just restoring a 1950 NSU bike and i tried a conservationfluid on it. rusty parts shine black and the paint looks like new now. no need to paint the whole fenders and stuff. looks like clean patina and keeps the value. it looked like found in a swamp. brown and nasty. now its an eyecatcher. no paint! try it out! i named her christine ;)
+unairadm Hey, thanks for the tip; I'll try to get my hands on some of that... Cheers!
My parents drove a pink one of these to Yellowstone for their honeymoon in 1962...😎
It is a good donor car or a restoration projected. And there are lots of good parts left on the car.
Nice just noticed you put up 2 new vids!
WOW. I can't believe on what I just read ... guys just do your best..,. your fine 😋
Schweet ride. I like the Montcalm 500 but, this is very doable.
In Canada you lift up the old trunk & find a squirrels nest, here is Aussie probably a tiger snake, ouch!
I'll take that 62 Mercury wagon!
Pretty KOOL
Quite possibly the worst trunk-vault find...EVER!
Thanks for another great video.
+societyschild 54 Haha yep... disappointing for sure! Cheers.
SWEET!!!
Ah, same rainy Saturday morning as the `53 Packard comment, and I just happened to click on this `59 Meteor video. Why, you ask ? We-e-e-l-l-l, because this video reminded me that I have, in my possession, a NOS Ford/Motorcraft/Autolite 1956 Carburetor ( Part# B6A-9510-R ) Single-barrel that fits on Fairlanes/T-Birds/Meteors with Y-Block 272,292,312 engines.
I noticed that there is a definite lack of an engine in Dean`s, er- I mean Agent 303`s `59 Meteor.
So ... if Dean, er- Agent 303 < or anyone else > should find that they are in need of a NOS carb for the above-mentioned vehicles ....
Cat likes it, probably mice in there!
+twogreatguitars Stu's going after the dead squirrels!
Where did Meteor fall, price wise? Above Ford but below Mercury? Weirdly, they also had a Canadian Edsel in '59, as we learned from a different video.
Hi! Meteors were priced maybe just a bit more than Fords. They were marketed so that Mercury dealers had a low-priced car to sell in areas that couldn't support both a Ford and a Mercury franchise, I believe. A Meteor expert might know differently however; I am happy to be corrected on this if I am wrong. Cheers from us here!
Has anybody told you what great camera work and editing you guys have done to put these shows together? I think I'd go to one of the Cable Channels with this. If we clean you guys up a bit, (No Dart Breaks or 420's) I bet we could make you as popular at "Yukon Gold".
+Motorjon Hey thanks for the note. I don't actually have a TV, so I am not sure how popular that is, haha. Besides, if we took out the darts and the parts where we're stoned, there wouldn't be anything left! Cheers from me and Stella!
This Is Gonna be Major to Restore this Rideau from 1959.
I so enjoy your videos!
Sweet, I had a 59 Ford 2 door Ranch Wagon, 292 with three on the tree and electric overdrive, that baby would do over a 100 mph easy... loved that car. Rust free Nevada car with original paint. Never saw or heard of Meteor before or Rideau, so Meteor obviously was Ford of Canada, did you fellas have Ford badged cars??
+MISTERComaToes Hi! Yes, we had Ford and Meteor-badged cars here, as well as Mercury and Monarch models... Lincolns were the same here as in the US though. Weird.
coldwarmotors Totally! It's like you guys got so many more cars to choose from, from the same company... So for GM Cadillac was top of the line, Buick next, Olds, Pontiac then Chevy. In the US Lincoln obviously was the top FoMoCo product, then Mercury then Ford Where did Meteor and Monarch fit into that spectrum?
very rare wow meteor
i wish i could do the same with a zastava 750 parked nearby in the woods...
That hood emblem reminds me of one from a Lincoln.
Gotta find a good 292 Y-Block to go in there!
Would be a good choice didn't they start putting 330 fe motors in the 59s though
No one has taken the radio. +10 points on the scorecard.
Time to build a rat rod without breaking the bank. Now there’s a challenge, you had a V8 capri at one point. rat rods don’t have to have a V8 though, I know that diesel rat rods have been built before [one features on a tv show in England called Sin City Motors which is filmed in Las Vegas].
@5:14 you should have caller Jeraldi Riviera for this suspencful flop! Im so glad he eft that liberal 20/20 show
Listen, that old Mercury might make 1-1/2 Kia Magentis. That wouldn't' be so bad!
In U.S, Ford didn't the have Meteor division, a U.S model was called a Mercury Meteor.
Does Dean have a building and some metal working tools? Do you have a barn like building with a concrete floor and hoist? I know Jim does... I know Dean collects the cars but does agent 303 have a building with some tools to work at fixing the cars? He should be getting good at the metal work by now right? Seems like a capable lad :-)) Love the Meteor he picked up here [at Clayton's place was i?]. The old Fords always make me think of Bob Mitchum in Thunder Road where he gets the Fairlane to run Moonshine... not sure what the first car he was driving was but... ya. lol
Minty Ford
Definitely worth saving even if only for the rare Meteor parts. Otherwise is is pretty much a 59 Ford. Is there still a floor in there?
+roosty6 Exactly! Lots of good parts here, but no floor or rockers or 1/4,s, etc... Cheers from us here at CWMC.
Yep, here that's a '59 Galaxie .
@Fred Wucher I understand Ford built an LTD Custom 500 on the Panther platform until 1981. same for the Chevy Bel Air...
Kept looking at the radio and noticed the Conrad early warning markings on it. Was Canada part of the system or does the car have a U.S. radio in it? The markings were intended to inform the public what to in the event of a nuclear attack.
+yost123 Yes, that system was in place for Canada, too... My friend's father was part of a crew that worked up north on the big radar stations across the Northwest Territories.
Just found this site. Great. What do you do with the cars? Restore them or just get 'em running?
Hi! Thanks for the note. Some cars get restored, some we buy to save and re-sell as projects or as parts cars... Some we buy to use as parts for other cars, and finally... some are bought strictly because I want one sitting my yard, haha. Glad you like this kind of thing... All the best from everyone here.
Really like your videos that’s abooot a nice car ehh
Aw, you gotta go back and get that Thunderbird I saw in the vid!
love the vids bud
+shaundis buddyguy Hey, thanks for checking them out... will have some more soon. Cheers from me and Stella!
Do you restore cars after you buy them?
dewil6661 i think they are helping to preserve them for the future restorers. They make the best of them with existing parts and know how. I suggested that the yard that houses them sprays hem down in a mist of oil to keep water , rust and critters away
IT'S A TREASURE~! ;)
shes not a mercury or a ford. shes a meteor. meteors where their own brand
yep agreed
It looks like somebody tried to pry the hood open, but did'nt realize it opens from the rear!
Round tail lightsTill 66 on Falcons
Darn, I thought that it was, a least a 4 door HARDTOP.
i knew these fords are similar to the Canadian Rideau meteor I knew these cars are basically Canadian fords but with a different name I knew for a fact save for the different body shape with the differing markets and other things that's what I knew and from what I had read in magazines on old cars
"Canadiana at it's finest"
...pretty much describes your channel, Scott.
+rareblues78daddy Hey, thanks for checking it out... Yeah, I guess it's not to hard to figure out where we're from, eh? Cheers from me and Stella!
Yeeks!
+bg147 Haha yeah; a pretty typical "Dean car", as they have become known...
Nice video! Is that the Canadian equivalent to a Galaxie?
It is equivelant to a Fairlane.
if i had some money tell you what i would do, go downtown buy a mercury or two
mercury blues
Hope the editing went well. Have a great night. Time for some classic detective movie, who knows, might spot a Frazer.
Be nice to the K car....I own two.....LOL
I find it interesting how Ford and other makers, sold the same vehicles in Canada under different names. They just had a few minor differences. A few years back, I saw a "F" series pickup with Mercury badges. I knew it was from Canada. Anyone know why they did this?
Love that Fords i haved restored an Galaxie 1962 whorst condition than this car i just about to get finnish of doing that and i am leving in denmark and the only way to restore cars from America is to buy parts from ebay and etc,but American cars is the best to own in europa i am an great fan of american cars the best cars in the hole world.
I grew up when Canadian-built versions of American automotive makes were
commonplace on the roads of Canada. We seldom, if ever, saw them in the U.S.
Does anyone know of any books that were written about this very interesting chapter
in automotive history?
Did all of the Big Three automakers have Canadian versions of their products?
How about the independents? It is well known that the last Studebakers were
built in Hamilton, Ontario. Before then, were there Studebakers built in Hamilton,
or elsewhere in Canada, with a Canadian nameplate, that were built for the
Canadian market? How about Nash, Hudson, etc.?
Hey, thanks for the note! All 3 of the big 3 had Canadian versions of their cars with different names and sheetmetal / trim variations. Canada was a much smaller market, and often smaller towns could not support a Dodge and a Plymouth dealership, for instance, so we got low-priced Dodges based on Plymouth bodies. Canadian Pontiacs were Chev bodies with Pontiac front ends and trim, etc. There are some comprehensive books on the subject, too! Cheers from us here!
How is the Frazer coming along?
contrairement à d'habitude l'intérieur est pas en trop mauvais état .
oui, enfin tout est relatif :-)
How does it looks today??
Curious, Stella get along with Stu? I image she encounters many kitties when hunting old cars...
+houndking Yeah, Stella kind of adopted Stu last year from a litter of strays, so I kept Stu around and gave the others away. They are best buds now... Stella was raised by my old cat Margrit, so she's really good with cats.
Very cool, glad to hear!
Bude jezdit?
good luck finding parts and a deep wallet
1960 Fords did not have round taillights Guys...
1959 😊Edsel had them
Do it right, put a 390 in it with that 3 speed.
