Dr Ruth Gates' work on "super corals" is awesome. I hope it will help recover the reefs we have lost all over the world. I was very sad to hear that she passed away last month. Rest in peace Ruth - you are an inspiration to us. I have also started to do my (small) part!
Good film. I would have liked to see more of an explanation of what corals are and the effects of their disappearance. But seeing what is being done to save them is great. Hagedorn and Gates' work is commendable
It did touch on that a bit in passing. If I'm not mistaken, it was mentioned that coral reefs serve as an underwater bulwark against oceanic storms that can accelerate coastal erosion. And if left unchecked, will eventually pose a direct threat the communities that are built along the coasts.
It was really a valuable effort to preserve one of the most important species on the ocean, I hope their idea will come true also thanks for the Economist endeavor to introduce the scientist struggle to cope with these problems.
As professional mariners we all have a duty to be stewards of the sea. In addition, to share our nautical experience and knowledge with youth. As a Fleet Officer for Sea Scouts this will make a good presentation. Thanks Economist.
Really unexpected 😮I thought a channel like the Economist would only report news about the world economy. But found such an engaging and knowledge-enhancing’s program ❤Thanks for your hard work and sharing 😊
Our natural world is a part of the economy. They provide many life support services that would be expensive or impossible by artificial means. India’s loss of vultures costs them 70 billion US/year and 500k access deaths, dropping life expectancy of those in the region. New study is coming out about loss of bats in North America and infant death. All species are a part of the economy. I am excited to see The Economist cover ecosystem economy more, as people realize the importance of factoring in life supoort ecosystems in economic models.
The Video is extraordinarily informational about how some smart people are looking to protect and ave coral, but not stop climate change, that will take all of us. I did think it was cool how they try to accelerate evolution of corals so they could handle the warming oceans.
A crucial part of this extraordinary film was its absolutely amazing music, especially towards the end. A dramatic and yet touching melody. Incredible. If someone knows the titles of the sound tracks used in this video, could you please share them with us? Thanks!
It was 7 yeaaaaaaaaaaarsssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:-)
Can we PLEASE have a PROPER introduction of WHO this Doctor (researcher) is ?????????? WHY was there no show of her name and organization for people to find her? Please be more sincere with your work Economist.
I believe that the man is exaggerating his hardship: "If I cannot find fish, then family is not going to survive much in Palau." This man, drives a gas boat, wears proper swim suit and his fishing tool is a spear?! Really? Is that the true story? If it is, please give more details and data. If not, then does it mean the filmmakers are telling a "not so true" story, in order to guide audiences to a "not so objective" conclusion?

This video never mentions the US or any government.
They deserve it though

Agreed. It's not like a working man to exaggerate his woes. And he said it's because of overfishing, not climate change.
