    I did cabinet doors and drawer front with birch and MDF panels. for two kitchens in the same batch. Over sixty pieces. About 2/3 of those pieces had to be redone, so I outsourced them. I wish I had known this was an option years ago. Saved both time and money.

    Building your own painted doors helps when you make a mistake or change in design ,or have an erratic schedule.
    It also takes shop space,employees, and loss of production .
    Pre-primed is an enormous time savings.
    Coming from using S2 and simply handling material.
    Cut to length,rip,joint,rip , stick,cope ,assemble and clamp ,remove from clamps,6 passes through a single wide belt,rip twice,square ends,edge sand,rotex,RO,break edges and profiles by hand.
    Probably moved and stacked at least 20X.
    3 dedicated shapers.
    Tooling shared with faceframe...sliding tablesaw, edge sander,,and wide belt.

      Yeah we could never build and prime a door for what we can buy it for. And then our 5 piece door’s paint will probably crack.

    I've hired 2 different cabinet shops, both relatively small. One shop bought the doors from a door manufacturer, the other shop built all of the doors themselves.

    Curios about the cost. Totally agree this makes sense for painted and I could be wrong here, but I think the shaker door trend may be on its way out. I have 2 upcoming kitchens and both clients have stated that isn’t what they want. Thankfully the budget is there for the more custom style they’re looking for on both projects so I’ll be making the doors which makes me happy

    • @warrenwerks
      @warrenwerks 5 місяців тому +1

      @@TodaysCraftsmen wow that’s really affordable actually. One is a craftsman style and the other is stained band sawn type, sort of rustic. It’s a bit hard to explain but it should be fun to make. Both are more natural finishes though, I don’t tend to do as much painted stuff

    Wondering if I could get some advice on some wardobe doors I'm going be building. The are 5 feet tall and I typically make them out of 3/4 inch poplar styles and rails with 1/2 inch MDF. In the past I've built taller doors this way that seem to be hard to keep from warping over time. Any recommendations on building these tall wardrobe doors would be so appreciated. I have a sketchup file I can share if you wouldn't mind?

    • @TodaysCraftsmen
      @TodaysCraftsmen  4 місяці тому +1

      Poplar will work but you run the risk of some bowing. You can try to pick out some quartersawn stock for more stability. You could also make 5 piece doors out of MDF but I haven’t personally tried that.

      I agree, kind of a dead giveaway that it's not "real wood."

    • @TodaysCraftsmen
      @TodaysCraftsmen  5 місяців тому

      Fair enough but 99% of clients don’t know or care. I think the biggest thing is that the door is superior to wood so no reason to hide it.

    • @TodaysCraftsmen
      @TodaysCraftsmen  5 місяців тому

      You’re right. I think the point to make with a client is that these doors are a superior choice to wood despite the longtime stigma of “MDF” doors.

    We have been getting 5 piece doors made out of HDF from good old Conastoga lately, so you know how that quality is. Is he making 5 piece doors too or just single piece right now?

    • @TodaysCraftsmen
      @TodaysCraftsmen  5 місяців тому

      Just one piece. 5 piece HDF seems a little silly…

    • @Mopardude
      @Mopardude 5 місяців тому +1

      @@TodaysCraftsmenHonestly I like the looks better. I suspect the reason they do it is a cost thing. They are already setup to do 5 panel, replacing hard maple stiles and rails way cheap to build out of HDF.

    "give away the exact product secret". Five days behind, to set up the shaper and router?... One idea would be to have a coping shaper and a sticking shaper, stacking your profiles. Then setup is with a digital height gauge...

    • @TodaysCraftsmen
      @TodaysCraftsmen  5 місяців тому +3

      That’s certainly one way to do it but not everyone has the shop space or budget to have two dedicated shapers. Like we said in the video: sometimes the best option is to buy doors and sometimes the best option is the build doors.
      Comparing these doors to IKEA is unfair. These are custom made to order in the USA with all domestic materials, including the paint. You don’t have to like the doors but don’t unfairly compare them to a conglomerate manufacturer like IKEA. Assuming you have your own shop you should know better…

    I get it... but at that point are we just making carcases... I don't like the idea of just assembling parts... like store bought drawers, doors, hardware... I guess you can get a CNC and some cabinet software and you don't even have to think about the carcase.

    • @TodaysCraftsmen

      @@TodaysCraftsmen i hear you. Your last two videos have given me a bit to think about. I love cabinetry and furniture making for the craft, but, I also have to compete against nasty imported stuff. Some projects are probably best suited to prefab. The challenge will be figuring out what sort of client I have when they call for a project, I definitely don’t want to end up negotiating to prefab all the time. This is a dilemma for me.

    • @TodaysCraftsmen
      @TodaysCraftsmen  5 місяців тому +1

      It’s definitely tough. But even something less than 100% built by you is going to be better than something from IKEA. It’s a win-win I think. Client gets something within their budget and better than made by a huge corporation.
