I see from your Martin Demonstration video that you've been keeping it up quite well! I think I started around the same time, I guess some 11 years ago! If you ever wanna trade some secret chords, send me a message!
Many years ago i went to see him in concert in Florence. He started the concert by casually walking on stage all by himself and started playing some amazing music as soon as he got to the microphone..then at some point he started playing the guitar AND the microphone with a painting brush. Dude's an alien.
This is improvised. Having seen Tommy live a few times this is what he does sometimes on a whim... He is possibly the most instinctive and naturally gifted guitarist I've ever seen play live. He is totally at one with his given instrument and loves nothing more than playing live. Mechanical is one thing he is definately not..
There's a difference between showing off and enternaining the crowd while having abit of fun! No it's not about how many notes a second you can play, that's why we love him. He plays with more groove and soul than anyone out there. And not just that, his technique is superb. He can play a slow ballad as good as anyone alive!
It's half the show! Yeah he does show off, but he's entitled to. There are many great guitar players i once looked at with awe at how they seemed to preform the impossible. Now most anything I can see being achievable with practice. But much of how Tommy Emmanuel plays remains utterly magical.
Man... I got to watch him live... then I went to a Bon Jovi concert ... guess which was better :P This guy is absolutely fantastic... and such a nice bloke too, came and talked to us afterwards and everything. My friend had a TE guitar book and wanted to get it signed, Tommy says, I have a special message for you and writes "Stop wasting your time here and get to practising" absolute legend.
We're so thrilled to have Tommy Emmanuel play on July 20th (2013) for our Guitar festival in Vendôme, France! What a treat!!!
Klasse, klasse superklasse.
Pissing about of THE HIGHEST order.... The most naturally gifted guitarist I've ever seen. Style, feel, class, humour and bags of humility..... No wonder Chet bestowed upon Tommy the rare order of CGP (Certified Guitar Picker). One of only four players ever to have been honoured by Chet in this way before he died....
incredible! some people are just incredible tommy is one of them the fastest, cleanest, most accurate acoustical guitarist i have ever seen.I can only think of one other who happens to live in dallas tx.
This shows how great and fun Tommy is on stage so relaxed and always looking for a way to entertain!! seen him twice one of the best if not the best Acoustic players around today!! thanks for posting this!
This took an incredible amount of skill and was incredibly fun to listen to. I only wish I could become as good as Tommy Emmanuel. The 71 people who didn't like this... please... never go on youtube again.
What's not to like? He loves what he does and he does it amazingly. 78 people who do not get that music can entertain as well as it is played, and Tommy is the best of the entertainers.
man this is awesome and the fact that he can play all those tunes for entertaining and then pick up right where he left in classical gas is amazing id get lost half wy through and forget what part i was on
About 3 years ago I had the pleasure of seeing Tommy Emmanuel & the great Albert Lee on the same stage together...what a performance I can tell when they began to dual with each other
How come someone a brilliant as Tommy (I've seen him live several times) isn't a household name?? Even people interested in guitar often haven't heard of him. We should all pass on the message to at least 10 people and get them to as well, etc, etc. THE No1 acoustic player alive today!
Wonderful stuff! Not just a guitar virtuoso -but a World-class stage entertainer captured showing that competence and technique can bridge any supposed barriers between formal and unstructured performers. The snippet quoted at 3.45 was Mancini's "Charade" from the Audrey Hepburn/Cary Grant 1963 film. This is musical magic at its best -and it made my heart sing on an otherwise wet winter Saturday in Wales (!). Thank you for sharing the experience. Keep pickin'
Tommy plays hundreds of gigs in any one year - and loves to throw in odd ball material like this. He once unplugged his guitar (at The Stables, Wavenden UK) and sat at the front of the stage and sang an Elvis medley acoustically. I was sat next to the sound man and asked him was this planned and he no but Tommy regularly does very spontaneus things during concerts. He may have played the tunes in this piece many times before but this collection would be strung together spontaneously. Thus Improv
i went to se this guy in concert 8 months ago in washington. he is truly the best (eric clapton said so at least) and i was lucky enough to see him do his improversation bit, not as long, but still blew me away.
Very very good! I've never actually heard of him before but then.... through an interview with Alex Lifeson from Rush....suddenly, there he was:)...Thanks Alex!
What an astounding level of musicianship, this man deserves the Chet Atkins award more than Chet Atkins himself. Look at his independence of his left and right hands, how they move so freely, it's beautiful.
This guy is the best guitar player of all time to me, obviously he is very skilled, but that's only half of it...he puts on a GREAT show, has personality, and is funny. Not a lot of guitar greats have both sides or are as fun to watch as Tommy, IMO
Tommy is the best guitarist today by a huuuuge margine!!! And besides, his a great man! He's informal, and as we've seen here, funny! :D and besides, he's laughter is hysterical!!! We love you Tommy!!! (At least I do!)
I am pretty sure he has played the songs individually before, they are most certainly rehearsed. But it's the way the intertwines them :P wow, it's just... amazing.
I could only really pick out the easy ones: Waltzing Matilda, Smoke on the Water, Pink Panther theme, James Bond theme, I think there was a bit of Godfather theme music in there. But like yourself, I'm more a listener than player. Gotta love his sense of humour. Nothing like watching someone enjoying what they do as he does. Probably what makes him arguably the best player in the world.
I saw him sunday in utrecht to it was amazing, saw him to in zaandam, but in utrecht he had a young heust player with him.. truly amazing young kid to (L)
Classical gas (what he's playing) is based on an A minor chord. In this particular bit he is playing a little bit of the A minor chord but they main bit you want to know is: Third on the first string, open 3rd and 4th string, then second on the first string, repeat the open part then open first string and open 3rd and 4th string
BEST GUITAR PLAYER EVER!!! I am totally amazed... This is stunning! As always! Tip: Check out ALL his videos here. Tonight Tommy is here in Gothenburg, Sweden. He's on in 30 minutes ;-) Harry
From 3.43 to 3.57 he's not playing The Godfather but a small part of the marvellous Henry Mancini theme of the 1963 movie Charade, directed by Stanley Donen and with Cary Grant, Audrey Hepburn and Walter Matthau. One of my favorite movies ;)
I'm pretty sure only a handful of people caught the Sor Mozart Vatiations lol... What's really strange I kept expecitng it. I also love when he plays windy and warm...
He plays so well, to the point where we enjoy his playing even if it's just short parts of the songs!
If you've ever played guitar you have some sense of how unimaginably talented this guy is.
Just think how many amazing arrangements he must have which we've never heard.
This is the video that inspired me to start learning the guitar tbh, I remember being 19 and being so inspired by Tommy in this.
I see from your Martin Demonstration video that you've been keeping it up quite well! I think I started around the same time, I guess some 11 years ago! If you ever wanna trade some secret chords, send me a message!
haha thanks so much! ive been playing for about 3 years now, its been an amazing journey.

Haha, Tommy is such an entertainer! I would recommend everybody to see him live, it's an amazing experience to see and hear him playing :).
The Hexenmeister playin with his fellow musicians. Love it!
Watched this on a loop 15 years ago and suddenly felt the need to refresh my memory
i love how his transitions are so smooth from song to song

entertaining people with music in a funny way... never seen the others do that before... Tommy truly is gifted...
Of all the guitarist in the world, this guy leaves u exhausted with not only his talent, but u just can't stop smiling.
I wanted him to play each sing all the way through, the guy is so gifted.
I've often said that Tommy Emmanuel is the world's greatest guitarists. I'm so pleased that so many other folks can get to know him via UA-cam.
Eric
un genio della musica...grandissimo chitarrista..penso uno dei più grandi chitarristi acustici al mondo.Bravissimo!
He is not a guitarist, he is the guitar.
This shows how great and fun Tommy is on stage so relaxed and always looking for a way to entertain!! seen him twice one of the best if not the best Acoustic players around today!! thanks for posting this!
I've had the pleasure of seeing Tommy and his brother Phil doing their stuff. Absolutely awesome.
Fantastic talents, both.
This took an incredible amount of skill and was incredibly fun to listen to. I only wish I could become as good as Tommy Emmanuel.

Congratulations on hitting the Powerball Jackpot aj1dj. Welcome to Tommy's world. Great to have you.
this just shows how great of a musician he is and also one hell of an entertainer!!
one of the very few guitar players that have the ability to entertain an audience
It doesn't matter how fast you can play, you'll never, EVER be as good as Tommy. He is a true genius, a Mozart of our times.
I didn't expect anything else... I've got his CD, his DVD, and tickets to his concert in Oslo, 4. April. I'm Norwegian :D
This makes me smile so much, this guy is just a legend.
Very very good! I've never actually heard of him before but then.... through an interview with Alex Lifeson from Rush....suddenly, there he was:)...Thanks Alex!
damn. he got it.. his technique is simply perfect..

Is there anything Tommy can’t play? LOL! Absolutely amazing!
its so good how he matched them to classical gas...soooo talented
I am pretty sure he has played the songs individually before, they are most certainly rehearsed. But it's the way the intertwines them :P wow, it's just... amazing.
i'm going to see him tonight :D

That is excellent he is one of my favourite performers.
