    Laser engraving on nibs and other features never cuts it for me. So many brands doing it and foregoing stamped nibs.

    I will confess I am in the second group concerning revivals, especially this pen.
    The new Omas pens are made in Florence and not in Bologna, where the original factory was located. As far as I know, Omas nibs were made by Bock, not Jowo, but they had a special ebonite feed making machine, which was in the Bock factory. I think they were made to Omas specifications.
    The pen seems nice enough as a pen without the Omas name. The laser engraving on the barrel is very sloppy though and it is unclear to me how many original Omas original nibs that will be used. As far as I am aware, Scribo now owns the nib and feed machine of the original Omas company. I am also of the impression that this new company will only produce small runs of limited and expensive pens.
    Given the price and what one could get these days from Scribo, including an original Omas nib and feed, this is too expensive, in my view, especially considering how much it skipped towards the end.

      The pens are made in the Gioia factory in Naples. You are right better to get a SCRIBO. An OMAS is not an OMAS if it is not made in Bololgna.

      @@ironmic9244 hello! I don’t know enough to choose a camp, but from what I see of this pen, I have to agree that it doesn’t seem worth the price. I’ll be interested to see what OMAS does going forward, though.

      @@ruthfeiertag Hi Ms. Ruth. It has made me very sad to watch this video because it confirms what I fear what might happen to OMAS. that it will be brought back just to sell. The engravings on this pen is just horrible. Even if this is the only one, still that shows shoddy craftsmanship, something OMAS could never be accused of. At least not the OMAS up to about 2000-05. After that the company was just a shadow of it's former glory. This is not even a shadow. This pen is not made in the same city, let alone the same factory. I don't know if they really have the rights to the name or not because Ancora has the rights. The person behind this was criticized for what he did to Conway stewart, so some are not holding their breaths on this. This is very expensive for such a pen. The only OMAS I'll consider are ones that are being released by Ancora.
      The Pen Family had bought the old celluloid stock, and they recently purchased nibs.com who have many new old stock OMAS nibs. So they are putting two and two together and some how getting 3. I am very upset about this. I know I shouldn't but when I like something, I am fiercely loyal. I love my OMAS pens. This pen will perform, but that engraving is killing me.

      @@ironmic9244 I don't disagree with anything you've written except "I know I shouldn't but when I like something, I am fiercely loyal." Why shouldn't you? Isn't that the kind of attitude that encourages companies to continue to produce superior products? I have only one Omas, the Shakespeare pen, which I haven't used yet; I trust it will write better than this one.

    • @ironmic9244
      @ironmic9244 Рік тому +2

      @@ruthfeiertag I guess because it's a bit trivial. There's a whole lot of stuff going on in the world, to be upset over a pen seems a bit trivial. Oh wow, the OMAS Shakespeare is some pen. When it comes to those types of pens OMAS did it well even if I think it was produced near the end of their demise. That is one stunningly detailed pen. I have no doubt IF you ink it up it will write marvelously. I wouldn't even know if I could ink it up. My OMAS pens are mostly of the daily writers kind. I have the Europa which is a LE and has a diamond in it. I tiny one, but still. I have prototype silver guilloche, and the rest are standard production pens. They are the best pens I have. I have at times considered selling most of my pens, and gobbling up as many OMAS pens as I could. Some of the special celluloids are fetching a pretty penny. I learned a lot about OMAS since I started using them, more than any other pen, perhaps that is why I am so upset.

    Long time viewer, subscriber, and liker of your videos; first time commenter. To quote you, David, let me begin by saying: "This isn't a real OMAS."
    I consider this a sacrilege whose primary intention is to capitalise on a well-known and loved brand. Had they made an homage in which they have improved upon OMAS weak points (such as fragile pistons and inadequate gold/rhodium plating), I would understand. However, from this review and others that I have seen and read, they made it worse. This is not an act of those who genuinely like and use OMAS pens. Beautiful material, but this tendency to cut corners and to manufacture ever larger pens is rather vulgar in my opinion. I personally stay away from pens produced by fashion brands and usually do not comment on other people's aesthetic preferences, nevertheless, I had to vocalise this rebuke.
    Not a pen collector here, but a pen user who owns a few genuine OMAS'.
    PS: JoWo never produced nibs for OMAS. Bock did produce modern nibs for OMAS (using OMAS machines, as I understand). The early (1930-1950s) OMAS nibs (by far their best nibs) were produced by Rover (made in Bologna).

    As an owner of many OMAS pens, this is hard to watch, and I am only half way through. That laser engraving is absolutely atrocious. I have always found OMAS pens as one of the best finished pens that were put out. This is sad indeed. I thought the engraving on the cap band was atrocious, the engraving on the barrel is a nightmare.
    I was already in the second camp, because what I knew of this pen before, but thank you Figboot for bringing this pen to video, and confirming my suspicions. This NOT an OMAS PEN!! I have this pen. It would not fit your review in all ways at all. I think the relaunch is complimentary to the brand. Aesthetically, it is beautifully manufactured, sanded perfectly, and the appointments are outstanding. Frankly, I was astonished at how well it is made. Maybe the new Omas saw your review and changed the engraving on the barrel, because it is literally invisible on my pen. Of course, I used a loupe and I can read it using the loupe. My pen is a Broad nib. Yes, the nib has good flow (wet) without being a hose. Very smooth writing. I consider the pen to be one of the elegant pens in my collection. Naturally, not all relaunches are successful...I get it. However, I am a little surprised by the cynical comments. Imo, IF the quality of pens to come from the new Omas are as good as the 222 I have , people will enjoy them.

    So wait…
    We have Armando Simoni Club. And we have Leonardo Officina Italiana. And now we have the rebooted OMAS.
    I’d love someone to explain all this. Weren’t they all created with bits of OMAS in some way?

    • @ironmic9244
      @ironmic9244 Рік тому +6

      I'll try. It's a complicated weave.
      While almost all Italian pens have been influenced or inspired by OMAS in some way, Leonardo comes out of the Delta family. Delta (great pen maker by the way) had 3 co-founders. After the demise of Delta, one went onto create Maiora, bought Nettuno 1911 (or revived it), and has secured the rights and revived Delta. The son of another co-founder went onto create Leonardo. You can see how the shape of the Momento Zero looks similar to the Paragon without the facets, and the rollerball clip was introduced by OMAS.
      Now OMAS. I initially thought ASC was connected to OMAS. After all, the name of the founder is in both company names. Sometime in the 2000s LVMH bought OMAS. By 2007 LVMH sold a majority stake. In 2015, LVMH sold off their remaining stake in OMAS, and by 2016 OMAS ceased operations and went into liquidation.
      ASC bought the OMAS celluloid stock
      SCRIBO, former employees of OMAS bought the nib machines
      Ancora at some point bought the brand
      Fountain pen users bought the grief.
      Hope that helps.

    I've watched the video and I've read the comments... I think i'll be purchasing a Scribo instead!
    Hearing that Narwhal is behind this revamp is already a red flag for me. I've vowed never to purchase a pen from them after each one I bought has had significant issues. Granted I own up to when I mistakenly damage a pen, but sadly their customer service has regretted each time i've made a purchase that has gone wrong. I dare say they seem to mirror that the pen has problems, which in hindsight is not reassuring!
    In your other videos, you've had better experiences with the Narwhal brand... I wish I had the same experience. I specifically write with fountain pens to avoid finding problems and to easy my anxiety, so it's unfortunate when I am upset about a pen. Sort of like when you purchased that Indian pen from the DC show last year.
    I'm also not sure if this is also the same company behind Bexley's revival, but the issue you had mirrored the ones I had with their "Miami Sunset" pen. Even the laser engraving is similar. However the pen's cap bands falling off! I want to sell it to someone but I feel embarrassed if the person wouldn't like it while also too proud to give a 14k gold nib away for free! Some revivials i've been optimistic about. I like how Nino Marino is handling Delta as higher end pens to Maiora where there's a distinction between the two brands while keeping true to the things the Delta folks love about those pens
    Anyways... love the videos as always!

Not something you want to do when re-introducing a luxury brand. One wonders what other skimping has been done!

    Well, the "real" OMAS will not return, and we must see what level of "original" you want to have for said this pen is a "real OMAS". You have original material, NOS nibs but a little different design and is made in Naples, not in Bologna. What will happen when they will make new pens with a new material and new nibs and the only OMAS there will be the design and shape, is not a OMAS anymore? Because Parker, Sheaffer, Cross, Esterbrook are not using the "original nibs, materials and made in the original town" and even change several times owners and nationality, but nobody complain about it because they show with time that they can do a good job. Give time to the "new OMAS" for show what they can do. Greetings

There is so little aesthetic sense in the design, it is a bit wrenching to see it next to the real thing. Astounding. I wanted the brand to come back, but at this point, I just wish any attempt to revive it would go away for good. Scribo is enough.
