Following up on this video: one of my patrons pointed out that while Mewtwo's weight is indeed fairly high in the Pokemon series, his *defence* is actually quite poor by the standards of a Legendary. So if we take weight in Smash to be a reference to a character's survivability, as opposed to what they'd literally weigh on a scale, the character is even more faithful to his canon appearances than I initially stated. An excellent concept that I wish had occurred to me before I put the video in early access, thanks Blackacre! Additionally, some commenters have mentioned that Ganondorf _can_ technically act after Flame Choke in the air if his opponent mashes out of the move. It probably would have been better to phrase this in terms of survival rather than being able to act, although the fundamental concept about disrespect still holds up. Fair point nonetheless! NotBae also brought this point up: since Smash Mewtwo is assumed to be the wild one from Cerulean Cave (doesn't start the match exiting a Poke Ball), Mewtwo would technically be an uninvested Level 70 as opposed to the other, presumably Level 100 and EV trained Pokemon, which anyone who plays competitively would know makes a massive difference - his base attacking and speed stats are more than enough to pick up the slack, but his defenses are outright pathetic by those standards.
Mostly when I think of lightweight mewtwo, I think of mega alakazam. A great example of a powerful psychic type, very glass cannon, and sheds all of it's muscle in exchange for brain power.
The only problem with that idea is that while Mewtwo doesn't have the greatest bulk compared to other legends, it's still much better compared to other Pokemon in smash, such as Charizard and Lucario. In terms of weight, it's also bigger than both of them. I know it's more about playstyle rather than literal stats and weights, but it still strikes me odd to have him so light
i always viewed it as him levitating himself a bit to reduce his apparent weight, but i guess this only makes sense for fall-speed since why would you use your powers to make you die _faster_

i am a plant main. but i was never into "plant gang". when he was announced i thought "lol people are gonna get real mad about this" and forgot about it untill i i tried him out just cause. what i found was love. heavy: check, Fast fall speed: check, useful meaty b-moves: check, messing with peolpe with a single moves behavior: double check, goofy character: triple check. I unironically love plant. and i dont care what people think of it or what tier it is. :)
@@BamHurgr I also unironically love plant as well. His moves are very fun to use. I've never really thought pp was that goofy. Certainly not as goofy as DK and his bulging eyeballs.
As a plant main plant gang speaks to me. I was into plant gang then I actually played them and found what I love in a character. Wackyness, bullshit, high survivability
Unpopular opinion: Pikachu is just a smaller, more annoying Joker. Hard to get your hands on, easy to get gimped by, and stupidly good recovery. So.. busted
Kid Renegade14 Dude, Joker's recovery is terrible. Or at least, exploitable. Tether is super easy to hit him out of especially with multihits, doesn't latch at many angles, meaning it's linear, and Arsene comes up really slowly without much invincibility and no hitbox, meaning it's one of the easiest recoveries to hit him out of even with Arsene. Add on the fact that he's a fast faller and can't stall offstage like say Pit, and he has a super exploitable recovery.
Regarding Mewtwo -- there's an argument about mewtwo's weight that I hear a lot (and agree with), which is that if weight in Smash roughly translates to raw defenses or toughness, Mewtwo's actually portrayed pretty close to Pokemon. 106/90/90 defenses are pretty solid but unremarkable by the standards of a fully evolved Pokemon, and pretty underwhelming by the standards of a legendary Pokemon. In battles involving Legendary Pokemon, Mewtwo is going to be hitting really hard and fast but also getting KOd pretty easily, and the same is true of Mewtwo in smash bros. The most unfaithful-to-canon thing about Mewtwo used to be his slow running speed, but that got patched years ago
Mewtwo is my absolute favorite Pokémon and I’m still happy he returned to the franchise. However, his playstyle to me honestly more resembles what I’d imagine Deoxys Attack playing as in Smash. Yes, Mewtwo’s defenses are below average for ubers (the tier Mewtwo resides in within competitive Pokémon), however, it’s HP is above average, being on par with Lugia and Ho-Oh. This allows Mewtwo to actually take hits a little. If we’re going by defensive capabilities, Mewtwo deserves to be a middleweight. In Pokémon, Mewtwo can take a hit, but he can’t just keep taking them over and over again. Compare that to Deoxys Attack who has the highest attack in the game and hits like a nuke, with blazing speed to make sure it gets it’s attacks off first, but has a measly 50 HP and just 20 for both of its defenses, so basically anything can OHKO it. Honestly, I think Mewtwo’s design comes a lot from what sort of character he was in the series at the time of Melee’s release. Back in the days of Gen 2 and ESPECIALLY Gen 1, which along with the movie were the basis for Mewtwo’s appearance in Smash, Mewtwo wasn’t just intended to be broken, it was intended to be beyond broken. Mewtwo in Gen 1 is so broken that the only viable ways to beat it are use Mewtwo yourself or pray to RNGesus that your Chansey can freeze it. How were Sakurai and his team supposed to accurately represent a character who’s main defining trait was being broken? That’s why I think they went with the glass cannon approach. Mewtwo, much like in Gen 1, is capable of KOing even Bowser at super low percents with its raw power. However, it’s awful defenses and large frame actually give opponents a chance to fight back.
The only thing I don't like about ridley is his damn weight. He dies way to early for a character as big as bowser. I like how he is represented in smash though otherwise
Well, compare how much of the space they occupy is actually filled with mass. Bowser is a massive round hunk of fat and muscle with a giant heavy shell on his back. Ridley on the other hand, is skinny, lanky, likely has hollow bones in order to fly, and a lot of the space he occupies is his wings, which probably weigh less than Pichu. If we compare a character's weight to the space they occupy, it should be no surprise that, other than probably Mewtwo and Fox, Ridley may be the least dense character in the game
I suppose he could be heavier, but he's also all skin and bones! Personally, the weight doesn't bother be none when my Ridley is in his terrifying advantage state. :L
16:40 this is why I've come to want Doom Slayer. There is a risk of his projectiles overwhelming the character design, but there is also the chance of getting a rushdown character to match the feeling of playing recent DOOM games, something I don't think we would get with any other gun-based character
@@ajavisk they toned down Bayo's sexuality from her series to be in smash I'm definitely sure they can be creative with Doomslayer. Esp since it's just the violence aspect. They can leave out the gore
Doom 2016 and Doom Eternal have done a BEAUTIFUL job breathing life into their protagonist and bringing him to modern mainstream without him saying a word or being out of character from the older games. I actually still want to see what id Software would do if given Metroid Prime to work on.
Banjo was a character I was very hyped for and I wanted to play him. Sadly he didn’t exactly fit my play style but I still love him and playing him casually. I’m more of a sword boy than a true zoner.
Dylan R. i really wish i clicked with Banjo on a competetive level, but he's just lacking any meaty combos for me to dig into :( but hey, he's still a wacky jack of all trades. i'm glad they got that down.
my tits yeah that makes sense. People still enjoy playing him and I’m glad that people found a character to main or simply got their favorite character into the game. He’s fun to poop bombs out and chuck them at people tho :)
As a Banjo main myself, the “jack of all trades” description couldn’t be closer to the truth. For what they lack in combo game, the make up for with good projectiles and aerials. Really just wish their smash attacks weren’t so... slow?
I’m a bit surprised you didn’t bring up Mario’s forward-aerial or PK fire. There’s been a lot of misconceptions about both of those moves, both good and bad, due to the memes about them, and an in-depth analysis of the move’s properties would be interesting to see.
Regarding "Ganondorf is disrespectful": the meme isn't totally because of some moves but because, well, he's been a bad character , especially in Brawl when online experience started. He was the go to switch for when you faced someone you knew you were a lot better just to show off since he relies on hard read to even work. This one popularized in 4 were most people real online experience started and became a lot more common to see. You'll probably say "But Coffee, Captain Falcon it's also a show off, hard read based character, what's the difference between the 2?" Well, first Falcon it's good in 4 and also has the legacy of being one of the most beloved characters in Smash history so you could believe that you were facing one of his multiple fans that just had him as a secondary. Ganondorf was picked almost exclusively for the feeling of winning with a bad character against all those "filthy tier whores" with their top tiers, outside of a few who just liked him or his home series. What's a better way to show off how good you are than stomping that random Bayonetta you found online? Sadly this meme transformed into "be a dick while playing Ganondorf for the disrespect", with all the people teabagging in Ultimate, hurting the original idea of "The King of Disrespect".
I never really thought of him this way, though it is definitely true. In my case, I just played him on 3DS (my first smash game outside of Melee at a friend's house) because I like hitting things really bloody hard.
The dichotomy presented by Captain Falcon and Ganondorf in Smash has always intrigued. In general I would say that Ganondorf's reputation, much like his unfortunate moveset, is a dark corruption of Falcon's. Whereas Falcon has historically been the stylish high-tier appreciated for allowing players to pull off flashy strings and prove just how good at the game they are themselves, Ganondorf has been the brutal low-tier who is used to crush others in order to prove just how inferior they are. This difference is at the core of why I feel falcon is considered "hype," and Gandondorf, "disrespectful."
Also the term “disrespect” is used a lot in commentary for tournament matches when someone lands a risky move or a stylish string or does a hard read mainly because it shows they don’t respect the opponent’s skills and will even show off and do something ridiculous just to torment them. An example would be the infamous Leffen vs Chillin at the Salty Suite, where Leffen was laughing and using Fire Fox onstage, despite it being a risky impractical strategy.
i feel like the argument that Ridley's core character trait is his size is kinda off when you consider he's one of the smallest bosses among the common bosses in metroid games, in fact in Super Metroid, he is the smallest Boss i'm pretty sure point being, if people saw ridley as intimidating it's everything BUT his size, since really he's actually quite small to everything you've went up against before meeting him, it's what he does and what he looks like which is what matters and Smash emulates this pretty much spot on
For me the aspect of Ridley in boss fights that always stands out is that he's normally the most brutal and straightforward. While other bosses in games that he's in have a unique weak spot or that puzzle like nature a lot of prime bosses have, Ridley is just here to kill you. Fights with him feel more like a mosh pit. Ridley rarely has any serious puzzle or weakspot and is normally about being relentless and suffocating the player. I think they managed to get that feeling across pretty decently in smash.
There's definitely some validity to this! As a counterpoint, though, I'd have said the same about other large Metroid bosses. Kraid or Mother Brain may be bigger than Ridley, but they're all significantly bigger than Samus, who's the point of reference in Smash for all of them to be compared against.
@Chase Wakelin close but phantoon is slightly bigger than Ridley smashboards.com/threads/the-ridley-for-ssb4-thread-end-of-an-era.324284/page-789 it is close though
this is such a weird video (in a good way) I really did not expect such a deep analysis about smash memes even if it was in the video title and that is what your channel does, I also did not expect how interesting it ended up being.
I remember watching cjszero01's Top 5 Ultimate Newcomers and once he got to Ridley. He told the viewers to think of him as a new Ridley, since the game already recognizes Ridley's multiple forms (Palutena's Guidance) and this version in Smash can be referred to as "Smash Ridley."
I find it so funny to see the variety of videos on your channel LOL. You have stuff like "EVERY smash 4 Character: A Restrospective" and then theres. this.
I keep a list of video ideas in a Google doc. There's like thirty of them in there right now, and they have nothing to do with each other. I'd say getting even this much coherency on the channel is lucky ;)
An important note: the data given in SSBWorld on character usage is on how much they're used on tournaments, not in general. This means that it's not that good to tell whether the "Plant Gang" is actually a thing, since the grand majority of people who play the game don't attend tournaments. It could be mained by people who make the most memes, AKA those that play Smash only as a game between friends, very casually.
I figured it might not be well-known enough outside the core Smash scene, but I've had a few people say the same thing, so I've added it into the potential pool if I do another video in this format!
Here is the thing about Fire Emblem in Smash - it makes sense because unlike many other Nintendo games, it is a game series driven by characters and has many more. The characters are much more important to FE than to games like Mario and animal Crossing. Other than Pokémon, which, while not driven by characters, is driven by the Pokémon, I think it makes sense that they have so many characters
Ridley is definitely well represented personality wise, but I'm definitely suprised that he's not more Bowser/Ganon-like. He should absolutely weigh more (I wanna say somewhere between Bowser and Ganon weight), and he could probably get away with being *slightly* bigger, but certainly not by much. I'd say he's fairly well represented as a whole, though. Also his down-air needs to be a better spike please for the love of god
Since up-B kind of covers the spike, I’d be fine if down air kept the current spike hitbox, but I do think it should have a much larger landing hitbox.
I also absolutely think Ridley should weigh probably not like as much as someone like Donkey Kong though that just doesn't look right. But he absolutely should weigh more than the likes of Terry, Wario or Plant. I think a problem with his scaling isn't that he is too small but rather some of his moves have really wimpy ranges. Forward tilt bizarrely has the range of a knife because he grabs his tail and uses it like a knife. Back air he doesn't even extend his leg completely leaving it bent at the apex of the move and then of course forward air. Moves like this make him feel smaller than he actually is. Fun fact though there is another character that should be huge but isn't. King K. Rool is a giant as well considerably larger than even Bowser in most of the Mario games (with some exceptions) and while King K. Rool is very heavy he is smaller than Donkey Kong in Smash. But I just find it odd that Ridley was 'too big' but the likes of K. Rool isn't.
A note about fire emblem characters in smash though; even though FE has so many characters compared to other franchises in smash, the games are built around getting to know and love a large cast of characters that change from game to game. Even though zelda is my second favorite series after fire emblem and has sold way more, I don't feel like I really care to see any other zelda characters in smash because the main ones are already in and don't change. With fire emblem though, each game introduces around 50 new characters and of those at least a dozen that are deep, interesting, and unique characters that fight very differently compared to each other. As a fan of fire emblem, I imagine Sakurai feels similar to me where the new characters feel like they deserve their own style and character. Now the issue is that Nintendo also pushed for the characters from Awakening (Chrom, Robin, and Lucina) which realistically Robin is the only unique one in smash, and Chrom and Lucina are literally Marth's descendants and don't really add anything new. But Awakening actually saved the fire emblem franchise by overselling so Nintendo pushed for that too. Really, it's a very complicated issue but TL;DR the franchise lends itself to having more characters, smash creator is a big fan, and Nintendo pushed for representation from Awakening... but Fire Emblem deserves to have lots of characters in Smash.
Yeah. Also, even though they pick lame main characters, the alts are good references to the other characters, for instance, Byleth representing the lords and Sothis
Yeah, although FE having lots of characters doesn't excuse not having more unique Zelda characters like Midna, Zant, Ghirahim, Impa, The Champions, Skull Kid, ect.
While the games are built around unique characters, I feel like spirits would circumvent the need for a lot of playable characters from the franchise. The design philosophy behind spirits is to create fights in the game with characters that aren't on the playable roster. Surely the series lends itself to playable characters, but I think that doing so in this capacity was unwarranted.
To be honest, Zelda's characters are kinda lame, I mean it boils down to this. Three zoners, (The links) heavy captain falcon, and a ninja. It's sad that Zelda isn't that unique and if I'm honest you could play the links the exact same way and win if you're good at one. Falcon relies off of grabs and kill confirms, who else does? Ganondorf, like it feels redundant to play almost all the characters. At least the Marth clones play different. If you main Lucina and then try to play Marth you're going to suffer. Like, what's the game plan differences with the links? Not much.
Genuinely surprised "nice back air" didn't make it Also, regarding Ridley, my favorite take on the argument is that Ridley has always had a variety of forms throughout the Metroid series, somehow transferring his consciousness to different forms. Mecha Ridley, Metal Ridley, Omega Ridley, Neo Ridley, they're all still Ridley. The Ridley depicted in smash is Smash Ridley.
Actually most versions of Ridley are, if you follow the timeline, the exact same Ridley, he does get more mechanical over time but his body is the same, except in Super where it doesn’t make much sense
I think Ridley is also just lighter than usually assumed, birds have incredibly light weight bodies, especially bones, Ridley still does stompy attacks, and many of his appearances have been endowed with heavy metal and boosters and shit to keep him flying
@@lightbrand_ ridley's body healed from the absolute beatdown given to him in the first metroid game, the space pirates gave him some tech to help speed it up, creating omega ridley, then after prime 3 he partially shed the armor, becoming proteus ridley, then after he got the shit kicked out of him on sr388, he flew to the ceres station, met samus on ceres statio, ridley was back to not robot, he then got dead back on zebes, but some of his dna ended up on samus, creating a clone, the ridley clone in other m, its frozen remains were taking to the bsl station, in which they were absorbed by the x, creating neo ridley, who was swiftly absorbed by samus.
As someone deadset on seeing Quote from Cave Story, that talk about projectiles grabbed my attention... ...then again, my second most-played character is a Mii Gunner based on Quote, so maybe that won't be much of an issue for me.
YES! I love this. I do think Quote is a good idea because he is unique and can be considered the god-father of indies. However, I can see his gameplay looking a lot like Megaman.
Either he's worse than the zoner I'm playing right now, in which case he doesn't threaten me, or he's better, in that case I'm switching and it works for me. Win-win.
Fire Emblem Of all the discussions around series representation, I wonder how many people realize that Fire Emblem got its first item, the Killing Edge, in Ultimate. Playable characters are often seen as the most important metric a franchise contributes to, especially in crowds where items are usually turned off. And with a franchise that features a revolving door of cast members and scenarios, roster spots are easily the most important way Fire Emblem can actually contribute to Smash. The only other games with this kind of game to game change are handled in various ways: -Final Fantasy, which may as well only be the Final Fantasy 7 franchise in Smash and leaves out a plethora of content from other games in the series -Persona, which is almost just Persona 5 but at least nods to 3&4 exist in music / mementos and one of jokers alts uses the color scheme of 2. -Dragon Quest, which explicitly ties all of its Heroes with a tight thread and features them, while ignoring the supporting cast of every game besides DQ 11. And of course, Pokemon, which basically does the same thing but is viewed with far less scrutiny due to sheer popularity of the franchise and the greater variety of characters introduced. But in other aspects of Smash, Fire Emblem isn't nearly as favored. The series doesn't have many stages, it doesn't have a particularly strong set of music remixes, it doesn't get any kind of boss fight, and it has exactly one item. It's only roster slots where they're so common. I think FE's biggest issue is that they've used most of the lamest main characters in the series. Byleth, Corrin, and to a lesser extent Robin barely have personality to pull from, and Roy's Smash incarnation of hotheaded warrior is hilarious as a fan of his game, where he's fairly timid and his primary gameplay role is being ferried around the map by more capable fighters. Hector is probably the most interesting leading character remaining, but he's well past his advertisable shelf life.
I understand Byleth, Corrin and Robin are meant to be stand-ins for the player [the same way the tactician was in FE7], so they shouldn't have too much personality, but also since they're not a specific character it allows them to pull a lot of the series. Robin and Byleth are two of my favourite character representations because they show magic, axes and a lot of things that are iconic to the series but that simply you don't see with the rest of sword-based protagonists. Hector (or Ephraim since he wields a lance and that is also different) would be cool, but I agree that the only way we'll ever see them is if we get a remake/remaster. [And honestly a FE6/7 Two-In-One Remaster isn't thaaat farfetched, still unlikely due to how poor the DS remakes did though]
Also, to add onto your point, Fire Emblem probably is barely the 6th most represented franchise in Smash, (counting spirits and such) Mario has two whole sections of music to himself. Why is that ok?
My personal headcanon is that Ridley is under the influence of something like either a Poison Mushroom or Mini Mushroom to be able to fight in Smash. In terms of how he's designed, I do accurately think Ridley represents his Metroid appearances to the best of his ability. Moves like Side B and Down B really help to sell the fact that this is the same ferocious murderer that killed and ate Samus' parents in front of her. Neutral B is probably the most Ridley move you'd ever see and feels like it's ripped straight from Super Metroid. However, Ridley isn't just a ferocious animal like his appearance may suggest. He's actually very cunning and calculated which is exactly the playstyle you need to play Ridley. When playing Ridley, you feel like a huge target and, while many moves sell the ferocious alien aspect of him, you can't succeed with the character by just rushing at them like an animal hungry for it's next meal. Instead, you have to be cunning and calculated by using moves like NAir and Up Smash to both protect your large frame from harm and catch your opponent when they least expect it with an attack (I bring up Up Smash because Ridley's Up Smash is actually ridiculously good and can really catch opponents when they least expect it). Ridley isn't my main, but he's one of my most used characters and, as somebody who uses Ridley a lot, he really does play like one of his aliases from Metroid suggests: a cunning god of death.
I like that you inadvertently also explained all the Olimar hatred in this video Their kit is pretty damn faithful to how they work in Pikmin, but since being an RTS character means you sit back and point at units to do things that means a lot of zoning will ensue Add in his small hitbox making him particularly tricky to land a hit on if you don't have a dedicated gameplan, his sky high damage output (which mirrors how a large Pikmin group can mow down enemies and even some bosses in seconds) and you have a perfect powder keg of salt waiting to blow Shame really, I always loved his playstyle and have been a fan of Pikmin since childhood. Zoner Salt did him dirty.
As a Reimu supporter, I perfectly understand this last part. Even the genre of her series scream that she would be a zoner, as Touhou is a bullet hell. While zoners aren't really my type of characters to play as, I still want Reimu, and I would try to play her as best as I can. I can also play her in the Touhou fighters, so who knows, maybe I will love to play her as much as I loved to play Link in 4.
You definitely need to cover Hoes Mad with Hero. The Meme is so all encompassing for the character from the original reveal, to the rng triggering the competitive community, to the very design of the character and how it plays almost explicitly feeding into a trolly playstyle.
The incredible amount of RNG you mention just reminded me of how fitting it is that Hero's like this The DQ franchise's main dev Yuji Horii is an avid gambler, and in pretty much every game there's been a casino of some sort, with endgame and post-game content available as prizes locked behind a labyrinth of RNG biased in favor of the house.
As a plant main, your kinda right. She can be a bit boring to play, and he is a zoner, but this isn’t because her zoning tools are incredible (although they are good), it is instead because she has almost no good air movement, or way to challenge people in the air. Her neutral air is the one I find myself using the most, with forward air also being used occasionally. Otherwise, her slow laggy air attacks force her to use projectiles. On a side note, not all of her time is spent zoning. Most of the time (for me at least) I force the opponent into the ledge, and use her projectiles to abuse risky getup options, which is what I think her projectiles were originally meant to do, not to be her entire archetype.
I feel like: Incineroar, Ridley and Mewtwo should be at least slightly heavier. I feel like these are characters who would benefit from weight buffs, as they are low/mid tiers who could use more survivability
Considering his speed pales in comparison to heavies like Charizard and Bowser, who weigh equal and heavier than incineroar respectively. Maybe just a bit more weight to increase survivability, considering how easily he can die offstage
I was one of those who was hyped for Banjo after years of wanting him and actually stuck with him as my main. Because yeah, you’re 100% right, this is exactly how Banjo fights in his own games, just about every boss fight in the series involves Banjo firing eggs at the boss, if anything when I was thinking of what potential move set Banjo would have before he got revealed for Ultimate it was actually more projectile and camp heavy because I was taking the other eggs from Banjo Tooie into consideration (Ice eggs, the remote Kazooie egg or whatever it’s called and the fire eggs.) and I thought that Banjo would have a mechanic where he’d swap between them all to fit whatever situation just like in his own games so I was fully prepared to main a potentially campy move set. But of course it did not reach that scale so he ended up more aggressive than I thought but still just as reliant on the eggs as he honestly should be.
Maybe look at some of the most notorious and salt inducing moves in the roster, like easy to spam projectiles, roller, or Palu’s nair, just to name a few
As a ridley main, I can say that I really like the ridley we got in smash. The way he plays fits more to his personality then a more "true" representation might. He's a unique fighter and feels good to play and I fell in love with his appearance in smash and mained him since the game came out. A truer, bigger representation of ridley very easily could have felt like the dev's bit off more than they could chew, and we might have ended up with an incohesive character that still felt too big for smash. I like the ridley we have now, and wouldn't change it for the world
I feel the same way about Ganondorf. While the idea of a more unique moveset sounds amazing, I love his playstyle more than any other character in the game and would hate to see him change. (The changes to the smash attacks are perfect though. DORIAH for life)
@@jacksone8282 I actually agree with this. At this point I'm used to his recovery being the way that it is (its much much better after it got buffed) and the pogo tail would be an interesting addition for sure
I would argue that the Banjo Situation is a surprise. He is a PLATFORMING mascot, and in his game he can fly, but in game he has some of the worst jumping ability in game.
This video is so niche and yet so interesting. It is more than obvious how much time and effort was put into this video. Thank you for this and I most definitely like to see a follow up video!
Sometimes I feel like im the only one who really likes Banjo Still, I'm still really happy playing as him and enjoy his playstyle and seeing him on the roster always puts a smile on my face.
The fact that Banjo and Kazooie are here at all is a goddamn miracle, and their slapstick cartoon design is some of the best work Smash's animators have ever done, which is saying something.
I'm not even saying this ironically: Piranha Plant might very well be my favorite DLC fighter so far. If he isn't, Joker is because of just how stylish and well-represented he is, but as for Piranha Plant, I have him up there for just how out there he is as a fighter. You would never have considered him before he was revealed, but when you consider the justification, he makes perfect sense. Piranha Plant fits into an elite club of video game mooks that all share the distinction of being universally recognizable no matter who you show them to, which is a club almost exclusively comprised of Mario enemies. The rest are probably from Minecraft, and maybe the Pac-man ghosts if you can call those mooks. The point is that Mario has the most recognizable assortment of enemies in any video game franchise, and this category of video game elements deserved to be represented, so picking a member of the Koopa Troop made perfect sense. While the Koopa would have been the most obvious, Piranha Plant has a more distinct design from Bowser and son, has a wider assortment of abilities to choose from, many of which have better functionality in Smash Bros, and overall made for a more memorable punch-line, which I do feel like was partially the point. But the most important factor in why Piranha Plant is in contest for my favorite DLC fighter is that it puts the community in its place. So many of us get so caught up in our discussions for potential newcomers that we end up developing a false idea that our voices are what decide who gets to be in Smash Bros, and while you cannot reasonably claim that it isn't a factor, you also cannot let that hubris convince you that we have total control. This is still Sakurai's game; he can do whatever the hell he wants, and if he finds a decent candidate that makes for a fun experience that we haven't found, he'll run with it, and I feel like some part of Piranha Plant's inclusion was to carry that message. Nobody asked for him, but he still got more love than some other fighters introduced in that same game (mostly the echo fighters and Byleth, maybe Isabelle, could go either way, but the point still stands). And yes, I'm aware that Fighters Pass 1 was decided by the higher ups of Nintendo, but from my knowledge, Sakurai had no real objection to any of those five fighters and there would likely have been some serious odds of him including them on his own. Overall, no other figher in Smash Bros has this level of absurdity to their inclusion, and I genuinely want to see more left-field choices like it. Characters nobody asked for, but still make perfect sense for Smash Bros. I don't even have any idea who would qualify for that, and that's what I love about it, because it will be a genuine surprise if it does happen. It's not as fun if a big fraction of the community forces you to see it coming, like with Ridley or Banjo.
All three of my “only in my dreams” additions are TF2 characters, but I honestly don’t think any of them could be played defensively given their archetypes.
Derek Zhang I agree, though the only projectile Engie really has at his disposal is the Short Circuit, which would definitely be a strange projectile to add considering it’s nullify most (other) campers. However, I love the idea of teleporter shenanigans with Down-B and Up-B, tbh. And even then, Heavy and Scout would most definitely be rush-downs, with Heavy prolly being a grappler and Scout maybe playing as a sword or with his bat(???).
@@blacksmithgames8739 I mean Engie definitely would have his buildings, meaning he'd be campy as all hell, trying to keep himself and his buildings alive long enough to KO his opponents.
Derek Zhang I mean, the only building he has that actually deals damage is his Sentry, which would more likely than not act similar to a hydrant/Villager tree. Yeah, Engineer would probably act more defensive and have a more “get off me” aerial/grounded kit, but I don’t think he’d end up being too campy. I still think he’d be a character that can be played offensively - hell, theoretically you could let the player swap sentry types similar to Pokémon Trainer before the matching starts and change how the Engie plays, if you really want to.
@@blacksmithgames8739 Oh absolutely, but considering he has the dispenser, which is a semi-free AOE healing box, which would absolutely be a thing Engie plays around.
Loved seeing the videos on character design, think a video on design transition from canon games to smash has gone throughout the roster with some of the best to worst character representation from their home games
As the final weeks before ultimates release, I became so hyped for Goomba. A compilation of different moves and abilities in a game-and-watch-style format of a smash fighter. And then Sakurai put his ceaser salad in the disk tray of his computer and I cried
I get annoyed by a lot of memes... especially a shit ton of Smash ones ESPECIALLY prerelease Ultimate. Some are a little good though like uh... Joker gun...? :D?
I genuinely like Banjo in Ultimate, and he was a childhood icon for me. It makes me sad how so many people hate him because it wasn’t EXACTLY the type of character they wanted. I still love him, and I want Nintendo to give him some quality of live buffs to his moves to make him more aggressive and less defensive.
@@MrMockRock I think he was looking for more traditional memes that also involved smash, whereas you brought the roots of those memes. There have been tons of memes around Byleth's reveal, so you talked about Byleth.
MockRock Peter yeaman summed it up pretty well. I expected a discussion on the traditional memes but what I got was what seemed like a history lesson on things I already know about a character like their move set, instead of the meme(s) itself
9:22 this makes some sense as irl aerial movement kind of prohibits someone from coming to the ground if quick enough, an example would be the ekranoplan, which uses this idea
I get Nintendo isnt being fair about Fire Emblems representation, but we aren't exactly reacting fair. Most make fun and criticize about how many characters it has, but what of pokemon and mario? As said in this video, the two have as many, if not more representation, yet when Incineroar and Plant were revealed, it was met with celebration, but with Byleth? People hated there release, going so far as to threaten Sakurai. My point is, people need to be fair about there criticism.
For me personally, I don't mind that Ridley is represented in Smash mainly as an original incarnation because his ruthlessness and cunning are portrayed excellently through his animations. He gets compared to Bowser a lot and it's for good reason; the two tend to fluctuate wildly in size between games. Bowser at his smallest was the same size as Mario with a mushroom in the original Super Mario Bros for example and while neither of Bowser or Ridley's NES appearances are perfectly analogous to more modern depictions of the characters, I think that they should still be considered just as canonical as every other game they've been in. Also, regarding the point on Ridley's ground to air speed ratio, Charizard and Meta Knight share that exact same property and it's clearly done with regards to game balance, so I don't think that should be brought up when discussing Ridley's portrayal in Smash. Overall, I'm more than happy with the sacrifices that were made in order to put Ridley in Smash because what he does have in his design accentuates his personality beautifully and it's a fair trade-off when the alternative was to not have him in Smash at all.
So I think what happened with fire emblem characters is absolutely no one was prepared for what happened with them. When melee was announced, in Japan, marth was one of the most requested characters so they added him alongside Roy to commemorate Roy’s release of the game which I believe also happened to be their 5th anniversary? Then when brawl released Ike’s game sold better than binding blade was ever planned to and *he* was requested In sm4sh, fire emblem awakening was intended to be the end of the franchise because the series was dropping off in sales; but then it sold so well and became so popular they added two characters from it into smash and simultaneously continued the fire emblem franchise. This brought corrin with fates selling nearly as well as awakening itself and then Roy yet again with him being very widely requested In ultimate they kept lucina as their goal of everyone is here but added chrom because of everyone’s surprise and expectancy for him to be added over lucina which ended up with him being requested a lot And then lastly byleth; FE3H sold so, so much better than most other fire emblem games combined, including awakening and was a very different game from the series in general I love all the fire emblem games and I like all the characters; I’m really happy byleth was added but yeah I’m still not sure what they were thinking by putting them as a dlc character as the last one of the first pack
I’m still shocked people DIDNT think banjo would be so defensive. Did you honestly expect the character to play rush down? Maybe you thought So but it seemed really clear banjo would (if he got in at the time) be a heavier defensive fighter who uses some combo of defensive projectiles and footsies.
Valor | Fr3ak people say "hoes mad" isn't funny anymore buuut that didn't happen until Byleth got revealed, which makes me think hoes are just mad. a meme works if it's true is my point.
The amount of sword characters in Smash as a whole is actually pretty reasonable. It's the oversaturation of them among DLC specifically that I've seen the most complaints about.

That is one of the reasons why you have a lot of subscribers even though you don't upload very often. Keep up with these kinds of videos even if they don't come often.
This whole deal about projectiles in special moves: As much as I'd love to see Reimu in Smash as some circles hope very aggressively for, I've always thought putting her, the queen of doujin bullet hell... with small hurtboxes, homing projectiles and dodgy movements, into the game would be sort of well *very nasty*
Palu nair: fine frame data, large combos; Pit nair: better frame data both safety and startup, starts combos that can drag opponents off the stage from anywhere to one of pits most advantageous states: his edgeguarding, hitbox is basically as big in front and can still hit behind him as well as being better at being long lasting, discount palu nair. Palu nair must be rlly busted
I can understand why some people might be disappointed in Ridley's smash debut but I kinda liked how he turned out. He has enough tools, kill power, and overall offensive presence to make him feel threatening and intimidating, but at the same time he has some glaring, exploitable weaknesses that hold him back. It's kind of perfect for his character imo. Or maybe I'm just saying this because he's my main and I find him very fun to play, idk.
Regarding Fire Emblem: While it may have a high number of playable characters, in terms of how the series is represented in every other aspect (Assist Trophies, items, stages) I would say it's pretty poor. - In terms of Assist Trophies Fire Emblem only had 1 in both Brawl and 4 with Lyn, which was extended to 3 in Ultimate with the addition of both Tiki and the Black Knight. This is honestly not that bad an amount. - As for items... Fire Emblem didn't have any item associated with it until the Killing Edge was added to Ultimate. While Fire Emblem may not have the most interesting options for items (as most would just be various weapons), it is disappointing that it took until Ultimate to get even one. - Finally stages and HOO BOY am I not a fan of how Fire Emblem was treated in terms of stages. It started off with Fire Emblem having NO stages in Melee and as a result the closest they had was Temple (a Zelda stage). Then in Brawl they added Castle Siege... which isn't based on ANY Fire Emblem game and could be considered a generic Medieval stage. Then Smash 4 saw the addition of Coliseum on the Wii U (yet another generic location) and Arena Ferox on 3DS (the first stage based on an ACTUAL location). Lastly, with the addition of Byleth to Ultimate via DLC also came the inclusion of a stage based on the Garreg Mach Monastery. Would I like to see more Fire Emblem stages added? Not necessarily as I think the amount of stages is perfectly fine. I just wish that half of the stages the series did get weren't just generic locations and instead were based on actual locations/events throughout the series.
The characters in Fire Emblem change a lot too though. I agree that not a lot of locations are iconic, but some definitely are. That said, it’s a very interesting disparity from the other franchises in that sense. Shows that you really cannot compare them equally
Some plant jokes from a genuine plant main. Piranha Plant Down air spike hit box is PATHETIC. It never hits. Side B does massive damage and is a little busted as a shieldbreak punish. Plant has 1 frame of lip invincibility after dropping shield for no reason. Don’t stop using Ptooie... ever. We are generally called spammers because of our over reliance on one projectile which is the only thing that makes plants bad aerials okay. For a character based on Anti-Air up air has 3 active frames. Back Air has so much end lag that fast fall b-air from ledge can’t be acted out of. You just die.
Ridley being lighter than samus makes some sense. Ridley is a flying animal, and those are typically pretty light in order to be able to fly, just like flying birds (the albatross, one of the biggest flying birds nowadays, weights around 7 kg which is alot lighter than many small cats and dogs). Samus is a human, a terrestrial mammal, which does not need to be light enough to fly AND she even wears a metal armor to add to her weight.
12:00 AAAAAA I've been working on a matchup chart aggregate for the past few weeks, I feel really bad that I didn't finish in time for you to be able to avoid having to make your own for the sake of the vid

Waluigi
i always viewed it as him levitating himself a bit to reduce his apparent weight, but i guess this only makes sense for fall-speed since why would you use your powers to make you die _faster_

Is pikachu busted?
Long answer: he’s not “not busted”
Short answer: yes. Just look at pancaking.
The short answer is longer lol
Unpopular opinion: Pikachu is just a smaller, more annoying Joker. Hard to get your hands on, easy to get gimped by, and stupidly good recovery. So.. busted
From vods, joker’s recovery doesn’t seem _that_ good. He has tether mixups, but his wings move is invulnerable for less than half a second.
Kid Renegade14
Dude, Joker's recovery is terrible.
@@Conrad_the_renegade Joker's arsene recovery is the easiest to 2 - frame in the game
The most unfaithful-to-canon thing about Mewtwo used to be his slow running speed, but that got patched years ago
i always thought that he is light because he is constantly foating
So than why Is Charizard a super heavyweight AND Better than incineorar which Is Better than the Two defensly
Well, it makes Mewtwo canonically accurate but nonviable
Yeah, that's kinda what I thought when I listened to him talk about Mewtwo's stats

Teabagging is not disrespect, it's immaturity
Also the term “disrespect” is used a lot in commentary for tournament matches when someone lands a risky move or a stylish string or does a hard read mainly because it shows they don’t respect the opponent’s skills and will even show off and do something ridiculous just to torment them. An example would be the infamous Leffen vs Chillin at the Salty Suite, where Leffen was laughing and using Fire Fox onstage, despite it being a risky impractical strategy.
@@alphakrab5022 I'd say it depends on context. But yeah, mostly immaturety.
i feel like the argument that Ridley's core character trait is his size is kinda off when you consider he's one of the smallest bosses among the common bosses in metroid games, in fact in Super Metroid, he is the smallest Boss i'm pretty sure
point being, if people saw ridley as intimidating it's everything BUT his size, since really he's actually quite small to everything you've went up against before meeting him, it's what he does and what he looks like which is what matters and Smash emulates this pretty much spot on
For me the aspect of Ridley in boss fights that always stands out is that he's normally the most brutal and straightforward.
I agree with your point, I don't think he's portrayed as accurately as he could be in smash though. He just needs better air game...
Dragon Lord
true true true! he's supposed to be bigger than Samus, but i'm a-ok with him not being a giant.
this is such a weird video (in a good way) I really did not expect such a deep analysis about smash memes even if it was in the video title and that is what your channel does, I also did not expect how interesting it ended up being.
Haha, thank you, that's good to hear!
Best MockRock quote of all time: "Alright, meme time!"
Surprised that you didn't go over the "jab jab POWER DUNK" meme, considering how often I've seen it recently

His d-air could've been his pogo stick tail attack
Since up-B kind of covers the spike, I’d be fine if down air kept the current spike hitbox, but I do think it should have a much larger landing hitbox.
I wish we had pogo tail cuz this dair is just not usable its outclassed in every way by up b
As a Ridley main, I 100% agree
Really, it's a very complicated issue but
TL;DR the franchise lends itself to having more characters, smash creator is a big fan, and Nintendo pushed for representation from Awakening... but Fire Emblem deserves to have lots of characters in Smash.
Not much.
Kinda controversial thought: Awakening fucked everything up in a way
Genuinely surprised "nice back air" didn't make it
Also, regarding Ridley, my favorite take on the argument is that Ridley has always had a variety of forms throughout the Metroid series, somehow transferring his consciousness to different forms.

Fire Emblem
Of all the discussions around series representation, I wonder how many people realize that Fire Emblem got its first item, the Killing Edge, in Ultimate.
Playable characters are often seen as the most important metric a franchise contributes to, especially in crowds where items are usually turned off. And with a franchise that features a revolving door of cast members and scenarios, roster spots are easily the most important way Fire Emblem can actually contribute to Smash. The only other games with this kind of game to game change are handled in various ways:
-Final Fantasy, which may as well only be the Final Fantasy 7 franchise in Smash and leaves out a plethora of content from other games in the series
-Persona, which is almost just Persona 5 but at least nods to 3&4 exist in music / mementos and one of jokers alts uses the color scheme of 2.
A dedicated Ridley main and Metroid fanatic, who has constant evolving opinions on the character in Ultimate, you’ve given me a lot to ponder about.
How is Ridley doing btw completely lol
I like that you inadvertently also explained all the Olimar hatred in this video
Their kit is pretty damn faithful to how they work in Pikmin, but since being an RTS character means you sit back and point at units to do things that means a lot of zoning will ensue
Add in his small hitbox making him particularly tricky to land a hit on if you don't have a dedicated gameplan, his sky high damage output (which mirrors how a large Pikmin group can mow down enemies and even some bosses in seconds) and you have a perfect powder keg of salt waiting to blow
Shame really, I always loved his playstyle and have been a fan of Pikmin since childhood.
“Zero Suit Samus is one of the game’s best characters”
Marss: False
You definitely need to cover Hoes Mad with Hero. The Meme is so all encompassing for the character from the original reveal, to the rng triggering the competitive community, to the very design of the character and how it plays almost explicitly feeding into a trolly playstyle.
The incredible amount of RNG you mention just reminded me of how fitting it is that Hero's like this
The DQ franchise's main dev Yuji Horii is an avid gambler, and in pretty much every game there's been a casino of some sort, with endgame and post-game content available as prizes locked behind a labyrinth of RNG biased in favor of the house.
I feel like:
Incineroar, Ridley and Mewtwo should be at least slightly heavier. I feel like these are characters who would benefit from weight buffs, as they are low/mid tiers who could use more survivability
Incinearoar is a super heavy.
y'know
*the heaviest weight class*
Considering his speed pales in comparison to heavies like Charizard and Bowser, who weigh equal and heavier than incineroar respectively. Maybe just a bit more weight to increase survivability, considering how easily he can die offstage
@@10.ikadekanandadwipayadnya83 We make a new weight class called "Thiccineroar" and it has Incineroar and Isabelle only
@@10.ikadekanandadwipayadnya83 he's at the bottom of the superheavies, being lighter than all of them
Also Incineroar is the slowest character in the game literally, he should have more weight to make up for that.
I would love to see a 30 minute documentary on "Hoes mad"
I feel like Ridley’s taunt where he simply stands up straight is a subtle jab at everyone who said he was “too big for Smash.”

I like the ridley we have now, and wouldn't change it for the world
Fellow Ridley main, totally agree. I love my Cunning God of Death
I feel the same way about Ganondorf. While the idea of a more unique moveset sounds amazing, I love his playstyle more than any other character in the game and would hate to see him change. (The changes to the smash attacks are perfect though. DORIAH for life)
The only real thing I'd change (and I say this as a Ridley main) is his make his recovery omnidirectional, and give him his pogo tail.
@@jacksone8282 I actually agree with this. At this point I'm used to his recovery being the way that it is (its much much better after it got buffed) and the pogo tail would be an interesting addition for sure

“Plant is the most unorthodox character in Smash”
*Min Min has entered the chat*
There are no glaring omissions

Piranha Plant was actually my most wanted Mario character for smash bros ngl
All three of my “only in my dreams” additions are TF2 characters, but I honestly don’t think any of them could be played defensively given their archetypes.
I dunno, Engie and Sniper would play pretty defensively.

Wolf is a more threatening air fighter than Ridley.

When Mockrock uploads it feels like an event

So I think what happened with fire emblem characters is absolutely no one was prepared for what happened with them.
When melee was announced, in Japan, marth was one of the most requested characters so they added him alongside Roy to commemorate Roy’s release of the game which I believe also happened to be their 5th anniversary?
Then when brawl released Ike’s game sold better than binding blade was ever planned to and *he* was requested
In sm4sh, fire emblem awakening was intended to be the end of the franchise because the series was dropping off in sales; but then it sold so well and became so popular they added two characters from it into smash and simultaneously continued the fire emblem franchise. This brought corrin with fates selling nearly as well as awakening itself and then Roy yet again with him being very widely requested
In ultimate they kept lucina as their goal of everyone is here but added chrom because of everyone’s surprise and expectancy for him to be added over lucina which ended up with him being requested a lot
And then lastly byleth; FE3H sold so, so much better than most other fire emblem games combined, including awakening and was a very different game from the series in general
I love all the fire emblem games and I like all the characters; I’m really happy byleth was added but yeah I’m still not sure what they were thinking by putting them as a dlc character as the last one of the first pack
I am disappointed in you for not putting Sans here. Like... He's THE meme.
I’m still shocked people DIDNT think banjo would be so defensive. Did you honestly expect the character to play rush down? Maybe you thought So but it seemed really clear banjo would (if he got in at the time) be a heavier defensive fighter who uses some combo of defensive projectiles and footsies.

The locations aren't that iconic and change a lot. Unless you want infamously awful shit like Valla lol
The characters in Fire Emblem change a lot too though. I agree that not a lot of locations are iconic, but some definitely are.
That said, it’s a very interesting disparity from the other franchises in that sense. Shows that you really cannot compare them equally
