Thank you for this. To add to this you should include examples. For instance, where you get the information from W-2 from boxes 17 - 20 for State and local income taxes.

Hi, thank you for this video, it is of great help !. If I may ask, I have a situation in which i need to ask for a Form 6166, but my H4 visa expired and is not in process of being extended. Can i ask for the certificate whilst my visa extension is in process, or should i wait for the visa to finally be approved ? Thank you in advance for your answer.

I'm not sure that I understand what you're trying to achieve. It seems that you're asking about whether you can ask for a U.S. residency certificate (Form 6166), but you're residing in the United States. Form 6166 is used by U.S. residents living abroad to claim certain tax treaty benefits while living in a foreign country. For example, many U.S. residents living in Europe would use this certificate to legally avoid paying VAT on certain items.
What are you looking to do, and how do you think Form 6166 would help you?

@@teachmepersonalfinance Hello, thank you for your answer. I am a Spanish Citizen, I moved from Spain to the U.S., I have been resident in the US since 2021 as a legal Alien. At the moment my VISA is being extended ( my current VISA is expired). I have filed my tax returns for the years 2022 and 2023 in the U.S., in order not to be double taxed from Spain I need the 6166 Form ...should i wait for my VISA to be current again, or can I already ask for the 6166 with my present VISA being expired.

      @@Bodemi1000 I understand.
I don't think that I can give you a technically correct answer here. However, here is what I would consider:
File the Form 8802 and request the Form 6166 (see links below) just to get the process started. The IRS will either give you the certificate, or they won't. If they do not, then you can always follow up to ask what they need (like an approved extension on your visa), but you should get some clarification on what is needed for this to be approved.
However, I do not know enough about your Spanish tax situation to know how patient the Spanish authorities will be on this, so you should take that into consideration. Below is some guidance on Form 8802 (I didn't see whether you've completed this before or not):
