    Hi Tharbamar,
    I have just concluded my home auditioning of speakers with the winner being the 706 S2's. I was deciding between the Wharfedale's Evo 4.4 and the 706's which both are excellent in their own distinct ways. The 706’s were just a bit more detailed in instrument separation and could really fill the room with music. Wanted to thank you for sharing your experience and helping me discover these B & W speakers
    . These will provide me years of listening pleasure. Many Thanks!

      Hello. I have ordered bowers 706 s2 without demo as demo is not possible where I live . I will be pairing them with my old Harman Kardon 3380 stereo receiver. I have heard reviews that these speakers sound bright / harsh so one cannot listen for too long ? Does one have to do any tonal adjustments to 706 s2 for listening?

    I added Rel T9i subwoofer with my 706, connect to amplifier with high level input. I was surprised the amazing sound. Not only the low frequency is better but mid-high also clearly. The sound like foolstanding high end speaker.

    I terminated the Mogami 3104 cables as bi-wiring cables to save extra jumper money. I use spades for the woofer terminals and bananas for tweeter terminals. Such a way, the cables can still be used for single binding post speakers because one binding post can hold one spade + one banana.

    Great to know 706 has become your reference. I am using 606 for 8 months. Its very bright at first and took about 200+ hours playing high - low frequencies files to break in. Excellent speakers for the money. I am looking at the 8 series for the near future upgrades.

    They look like beautiful speakers. One potential problem with anchoring them to the stands, though, is that the speaker resonances will now resonate down through the stands and could cause some ringing. This ringing may tend to localize the speakers and work against the speakers becoming acoustically "invisible." I had much better success floating my Klipsch RP speakers on sheets of acoustic foam. They sit there slightly cockeyed, but the sound is much purer, and when I close my eyes, I can't localize them in space. All there is is sound stage. Just a thought.

    Excellent review, as always!
    I just received my piano black 706 S2s, bought as open box from Crutchfield. I don't if these were well run in, but I have to say the sound, after playing a few hours while I ran some errands, is just incredible!
    I'm using a Schiit Freya +/Parasound A23+ preamp/power amp with them.
    I'm using them in my bedroom, have an ancient pair of 804s downstairs, powered by an ancient Bryston 4B ST. I'm not going to try the 706s downstairs, but I can honestly say these may very well sound better than my 804s...
    One note, I'll never have any use for the covers, the speakers are too beautiful to hide!

    Today arrived at home, is an upgrade from CM5 but not as different as I spected . Sounds very good, CM5 did too. More treble, a bit definition , what I havent percibe is harshness , maybe because my treble shy Naim XS . I recomended those if you listen at low levels of volume as I do. Enougt bass, treble, mids, dynamics.... the best I have own in this case. I have owned Atc Scm 11 ( Thin sound ), PMC Db1i ( no bass) , Dyn X12 not enougt bass too... this last spekers beat Bw in the precission of timbre, treble is more realistic too, but somethin always miss.

    I didn't know about B&W before until I wanted to purchase Bluetooth headphones to use with my phone on the go.
    I have tried many and every time I feel disappointed about the sound quality and thought there's no way to get a good sound quality on Bluetooth headphones.
    But when I gave the B&W PX a try, they're really amazing and have a great sound quality for Bluetooth headphones.
    So, I think I'll switch my home headphones and speakers to B&W and see how it'll be compared to Sennheiser and JBL which I'm currently using.

    Listened to some 707s2 and the top end was very harsh. The 702s2 (and by inference the 705s2) has a nicer response, the remote tweeter for sure improves things but they are still too close to harsh. KEF R are much nicer fuller and more natural sound, I'd have replaced the LS50 with R3's.

    How to make knockout speakers from scratch that sound as good as these. Buy some of these and use them as monitors. That's what l did. My home hacked coaxial speakers now sound just as good... and they crank too, good power handling. I could not make speakers that sounded that good without my monitors, no way! The only way to be able to do it. So proper speaker building is not a money saving thing, the cost is still there if you want to make great speakers from scratch. But well worth it if you are keen enough. I spent the money and hardly listen to them but l'm so GLAD l bought them. I listen to my coaxials they sound just about the same, except they are completely point source (and a complete knockout). I made the coaxial drivers from separate drivers and put them together. How l did it, is doctor both drivers and done some radical acoustic stuff. I didn't just put drivers in boxes like most speakers. And used the B&WS to tweak my crossovers.

    • @Justwantahover
      @Justwantahover 3 роки тому

      I got some and they are easy to listen to. Treble is maybe brightish but smooth. So they should not be too fatiguing with "trebly" recordings. Image is good cos of their low crossover frequency. There is some voice content in the tweeters and great image for non point source speakers. I bought some 900 dollar speakers and they have resonance and a hump in the middle (KEF Q150s). You will have to spent two grand. It's snake oil and you simply have to pay. That's what I reckon. I paid the $2,400 (AU) for the B&Ws after buying the 900 dollar (AU) KEFs. lol Cos l build speakers from scratch and NEED good speakers for monitors. Now my built speakers sound just as good. Blown away!

    If you know anyone who can build out a speaker for you, try a design from GR-Research. Danny Richie does amazing work and many of his designs use planar drivers or woofers he designed himself. Traditional brands sold through stores have so much additional markup included within them that you’re never getting the quality you’d expect.

    Most great gear requires a break in period. Same for auto engines. These speakers sound like Elac dbr62 Reference speakers on a tube amp. At 1/3 the price. To my ears. I have both. I should know. Tubes do make a difference to all speakers. Tubes help bad speakers only a bit, but make great speakers become a memorable event just by listening to great music. Like being at a live concert. How do I know this?

    Once had B&W CDM1 but got tired of them very quickly because of the dips in the mid-range making it too soft and overly silky. Ever since then I'm wary of anything B&W.

    • @MrsZambezi

      Erm, they don't have dips in the midrange. Not according to Stereophile measurements.

  • @ralex3697
    @ralex3697 5 років тому +5

    I don’t agree that they are the best in the price range, that is a bold claim
    I am sure you have not tested every speaker in that price range, perhaps they compare with some other brands in that price range and in your opinion the B&W sound the best.
    No offence, but speakers are really a matter of opinion. In fact, everyone hears differently.
    Another factor is equipment matching, cables, amps, burn in, placement, recordings, set up etc. There are many factors which can influence speaker sonics.
    The little snippet you played does not convince me of anything, because that is your set up, does not mean I would have the same result with my set up.
    Therefore claiming that these are the best is not realistic.
    I do appreciate comparisons, but not bold claims.
    Thank you for your reviews

    • @Tharbamar
      @Tharbamar  5 років тому +3

      I only claim base on the speakers I had experience with from major speaker companies.
      They do sound the best in my room and matches my system, I’m aware that no such thing is absolute best perfect speakers, it’s the best for me for time being in this price point but if someone releases newer design I might fall in love again because no speaker stayed longer than one year in my music den, thanks

      @scottsmith4024 5 років тому

      Well of course he didn't mean the best for everyone and every system. Maybe he didn't make that clear in this video but if you have watched his other videos you would clearly see he is not that unsophisticated about audio equipment.

    • @ralex3697
      @ralex3697 5 років тому

      Scott Smith
      Zero Fidelity, Thomas Stereo and John Darko are very impartial in their reviewing
      They do their in depth research and quantify their choices and expectations realistically. In fact they follow up their reviews if there were inconsistencies which is also commendable
      For the most part, they don’t compare speakers randomly, their comparisons are based on price points and other similar characteristics between brands.
      Their reviews are consistent, non redundant and without personal opinions.

    I am moving from the CM8 S2 to the 706 S2. I had the CM1 S2 and was happy with them in the same space. I moved to the CM8 S2 and feel that they have slightly recessed treble. I am looking for a speaker that has more top end and that is more kid friendly (able to store on a shelve to keep from the kids damaging when not listening). You seem to like a more mellow speaker, comparing the two, do you find the LS50 have more Treble presences? Also, have you heard the B&W 700 models that have the Outboard Tweeter? • @Tharbamar

      706 S2 have more treble presence and more dynamic than LS50, 705 S2 is not worth extra in my opinion because it’s just a little improvement over 706 S2, I’m happy with Denon Amp because it replaced my Accuphase E-306 and still my favorite integrated amp and won many awards in Japan than any other amps and I do not use amp from companies that don’t have their own manufacturing facilities and you might need to do some research on Denon amps, if I buy another amp it’ll be Denon or Accuphase, nothing else, thanks

    • @juanmillaruelo7647

      706: bigger. Bigget cabinet, bigger woofer.
      707: smaller cabinet, smaller woofer, same tweeter. Tonal balance skewed uprange.
      That's why the 706 is balanced and the 707 is trebly.
      Perhaps they were thinking of multispeaker setups, with subwoofer(s)
      In a normal setup the 706 seems more appropriate. But other people may not mind the 707 particularly if they have a "rolled off" amp. (legacy, tubes?)
      If you buy the 707 you may end up buying a sub, which defeats the whole exercise.
