  • I was fortunate enough to get an old Vermont Castings Aspen for free and restored it for my cabin to try and keep me warmer at night! While the installation is still a work in progress, it's doing a wonderful job!

This fire pit is one of a few covered pits that is on the list ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxAU9pOCSV9Y5JprooHvfxTpOrt4hx8uRM of approved products for Disney Fort Wilderness. The product served its purpose well and provided excellent fires throughout the evening. We were able to open the door and do s'mores, but I had to be careful because the handle was a bit hot on occasions. Additionally, I wish they had replaced some of the standard nuts with lock nuts in some places. We lost the door handle after just a couple of days of usage. Not a deal breaker, just a recommendation. I still give it 5 stars.

The glass door is beautiful. I got one from a friends yard, his house was built in the late 1850s. I don't know if it was in the house, I found it in the woods. Boy was it a pain to move. It's now in my grandma's backyard, she loves it. :)

Looks great! I would consider using bricks or stone to help keep the place warm after the stove goes out! Maybe lining the walls just in that corner where you placed the non-combustible siding, as well as beneath the stove. Looks very cozy though!

Vermont Castings is one of the best brands out there. I grew up with their Defiant model in my parents house. Burns all night, no problem. No need for any catalytic element with the right model. You might want to also get a bracing kit for that outdoor portion of your stovepipe.

No restoration done at all here. He cleaned a stove, thats it. And most everything he did was wrong per factory specs. Its really a shame, because to get the most out of those old crappy 1920’s, you need to fully rebuild it. Its of the worst designs for a VC stove, and they changed it rightfully to make it better. He says “the same stove new costs 1600”. Untrue. The new stove is the C3, which is leaps and bounds better than this 1920.
All in all Im happy you tried, just a lot of mis information here.

    I have 4 woodburning stoves/cookers !
3 kids plus me in a 10m square house 2 floors.
Usually we only have the main cook stove going in the kitchen. Even when minus 10c outside. Loads of duvets and sleeping with socks on, smile.
When it got down to minus 20c we used to fire up the big boy and everything down stairs got a bit too hot , plus 28c. Hence the 2 smaller cooker stoves upstairs in bedrooms as allowed them to make tea and cook if they wanted to, as long as they carried the wood upstairs and the ash down. LOL
Your little boy is very like the stoves that the locals use to heat a, say 10m-15m square space, easily. But they dont stay in long, about 2-3 hours, because of the small fire box, unless you put coal on it about 10pm should last until about 6 am, then just raddle it a bit and chuck on new new logs.
As steel absorbs heat and transmits it too well, think of saucepans. I would be worried about using it as a heat shield in s wooden building. I dont know about modern materials. I have only ever lived in traditionally built houses, so cement, bricks and stone (especially the igneous) act as heat sinks and fire protection.
Personally I would build a brick container ( hearth and chimney) around you stove. To absorb heat and protect the wood structure.
    Anyway I loved the vid.

Great video! The double wall piping was the killer! Why is this so expensive???? Hahahahahahaha Because you need it? Hahahahahahahaha Beautiful wood stove. I like the like grain motif and the side window. I got a Vermont Castings Vigilante off Craigslist, but the guy charged me $120 USD which is actually a good deal I think. The stupid thing was that they loaded the thing on top of it's heat screen....so stupid, so they broke that. The screws broke off. Maybe I can reattach that with magnets. I can lower your costs and chemical exposure a little bit. I think the best fireplace glass cleaner is ash mixed with water. Give that a try.
I still have to figure out how to attach the wood stove to the ceiling flew. It's not easy.
To get my woodstove, I drove about 2 hours to get it one way, and then another 2 hours back. You can find some wood stoves for free, but I needed one now! I was freezing my ass off. I'm in New York, but people are cool in Canada.

any tips on how to remove the screws holding the glass seem to have we welded them self on?

    • @AndrewSzeto
      @AndrewSzeto  3 роки тому

oh crap... usually for any screws that are stripped and weird like that, the solution is usually to drill them out. sounds like you'll need some accuracy around the glass though.

Look on yt for seized/broken stud removal tips. Try using heat first and or penetrating fluid , if that does not work then Small hole in centre gradually going up to close to thread depth ,then fit screw removal tool(set costs pennies),clean thread with original tap size . Get new screws and coat with anti seize /copper grease and refit. whilst your glass is out clean it with a damp cloth dipped in ash from fire then polish with cloth . It pays to fit new seals if refurbishing or every few years as they harden up .and check the state of the firebrick inside,if broken replace if you can .or make your own using broken as template .

Крутая печь. The only remark. The pipe for removal of a smoke needs to be done above a roof. Then the thrust in the furnace will be better and less smoke when kindling will go into the house.

Nice job on the stove refurbishing. Did you install a ceiling support box when transitioning at the ceiling from the interior stove pipe to the exterior chimney pipe? the stove pipe itself is not supposed to go through the roof. Interior clearance - If you used a double wall stove pipe I believe 6" of wall clearance is what is needed and if its single wall 18" of wall clearance. Im no expert and Im just trying to help if I could, please verify before proceeding.

Andrew Szeto i live a very low technology lifestyle still heat my house and cook dinner on a woodstove ..like Townsends but poorer gonna replace my us army korean war era one with it when im done welding the ash door and making a custom size burning grate ..someone broke the ash door being stupid pd $75 for the stove . . btw you can still buy replacement mica for your stove door online. if you wanted to make it look more old fashion . glass in stoves didn't exist till the early 1900s your stove was probably made in the late 1960s . its a good stove .
