Mate, seriously, thank you for such a great review and basic tutorial with no frills. Breathe of fresh air. Simple and straight forward. Please keep it up!
I did a parallel recording with the NTG2 and NGT4+ as separate tracks on a Zoom F8. I preferred the sound from the NTG2, but that's just me :) you can't go wrong with either.
Omg Tom, thank you so much for sharing. The comparison @ 11:50 was awesome. So GREAT results from this protection. I was really really skeptical of your setup but you blew me away.
When I search something I need to learn and see Tom Antos has a video about it. I feel like a retreating soldier who reaches the getaway helicopter! Only way to put it haha Thanks Tom!
thanks Tom - as always. You gave me some real life scenario and now I am selling some of my old stuff and buy this exact combination because not every film has the budget for a sound guy, but my assistant can work fine with my Zoom H5. Perfect video!
I have the nag and the zoom 5 recorder how can I reduce the ambient noise and get more clear the voices like your videos please how do you clean the noise. Thank you
8:11 "Which if you've ever used (rubber band style shock mounts) you know how annoying it is, because if one of them snaps or falls off it's always a hassle putting it back in." *gets 'Nam flashbacks to film school* Brrr!
Thank you for this video. I'm a wildlife filmmaker and photographer and I have been wanting to step up my audio for a while now. I will definitely be saving up for this microphone setup without the boom pole and extra cables. It may be a while until I can afford it, but it's definitely going to be worth it! Your video has been the most useful filmmaking related video I have ever watched, great job!
Great, thanks! You might want to check out the Cheero Power Plus 3. It's a battery pack, but it's 20,100mAh and you can hook three things at a time up to it.
They are both super cardioid 4+ is longer has a wider frequency response and more versatile because it has an internal battery so no 48v required and also buttons for filters like lowpass and highpass. You may have to adjust the gain higher as the 4+ is low in sensitivity and they sound different in the high end being that 5 seems to boost highs and that could be a good or bad thing depending on what your doing. 5 does slightly better job at rejecting from the back and thats all I got
Please Please tell me please do i need cable XLR F to XLR M to use my NTG3 with ZOOM H8 when i use the Blimp and The Boom RODE ? And which one you think is the best for filmmaking and cinema ? NTG3 or NTG4+ ? Thank you sooooo much ❤ Great work . thank you
Hello, I've seen a lots and lots of tuto' and review but yours is quite something! Everytime you were talking about a product, I was on my way to google it (price, review etc ) but a few seconds, guess what? You'd show it!! Bravo!
Superb results. I was listening with my Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro headphones at position 11:10 and I could hear some bumping at the low end. I assume you didn't enguage the high-pass filter. You're never gonna be COMPLETELY protected. It's still worth being vigilant and taking appropriate methods in post.
Funny, in the second example the built in mic (?) sounds better, although, I'm convinced that the sound you captured is something like a hided ME2, or something, maybe even rode link.
I love these, thanks a lot!! Two pretty basic/general questions here: how does cable length and/or geometry factor in on audio quality, are the unavoidable losses significant or do you not really notice much? And how do you handle rainy weather conditions with this setup? I guess an umbrella could probably suffice if what you're filming should stay dry as well, but if your subject is supposed to be rained on I assume you'd use some kind of mic cover. What do you use for that?
Great questions! Cable length is not an issue up to 20ft if the mic is powered like this one. Longer than 20ft and you might notice signal strength loss. Second answer about the rain. I just use a plastic bag on top of the mic if it's really badly raining. Make sure the front end of the mic is not covered though. But if the rain is light I just use the blimp and deadcat on it. It will get wet but won't damage the mic since the mic doesn't touch it. After a day of filming in the rain I just dry out the blimp and deadcat.
I'm not Tom, but ntg3 is more profesional mic than others ntg. It's better built quality with lower self noise an more natural sound. But its suffer built in battery, so it has to be plug in device with Phantom power
Pro Audio mixer here...you would definitely want to put a lav on whomever is speaking. Good boom technique is important as well, just seems a little too busy for a sound mixer. Get a small bag, and shoulder it. All the best
If you have Adobe Creative Cloud, you can use Audition, which takes a noise print of the background noise, and then uses phase cancellation to get rid of a lot of it. It works best with constant sounds however. Doesn't work so well for intermittent sounds like cars going by, etc.
Great video Tom! Love the straightforward talk and real life examples :) I just about to get a Xoom H5 hence your video helped me a lot to make a final decision :D
Hey Tom. Really good work and appreciate your videos. Now Idk if it was the location or post processing but the audio on the ntg2 sounded better than the ntg4. Did you ude different preamps or something? The ntg4 doesnt sound bad but the ntg2 sounds more flattering and full.
Thank you for this video, I'm working on a feature documentary and looking for the best versatile shotgun mic connected to a camera . so can this mic be used directly to camera such as the Sonya7siii?
Daniel Elijah they make an xlr to 3.5 adapter but make sure the H1 puts out phantom power if your mic requires it. Rode makes a video mic that has a 3.5 connector. It's battery powered and works great with an H1.
Tom, great review! Can you advise what is the name of the documentary you are referring at 5:15 and 10:45 timestamps? Browsed through your channel but haven't found one. Can you suggest where to watch it?
Review by Ben Osmo for Videomaker magazine says the NTG4+ was designed as an improvement over the NTG2 but that it is a step below the NTG3 as Rode went out of order on their numbers this time. NTG3 is superior in their RF-bias condensers RF rejection, sound quality and ability to perform in all weather conditions. Basically, you get what you pay for as reflected in the pricing of the NTG4+ (approx. $289) and NTG3 (approx. $489).........
one of the best review, doing my first short film , and you totally helped me out, but instead of the zoom h5n, I will be using zoom f3 as my recorder. any thoughts on this ?
Would you please share exactly how you feed the XLR cable through the pole. Do you have to remove one XLR connector to do this? Also, what length XLR cable would you recommend to use in this capacity? Thank you for this excellent production. I have found it most useful.
Ranjith Jim Box I'm curious too...Because I can't feed mine through the last end of the pole it's too big to feed through the smaller end of the boom pole.
Sorry . Just watched this. Hopefully you already have the answer but maybe someone else will have the same question. Boom Poles should have two xlr connections. One that goes into the back of the mic this part should already have an xlr cable running through the pole that leads to the second xlr connection . This second connection is for attaching the xlr cable that leads to the recording device .
Hi Tom. Great video as usual. I just made a video about how we record sound on location and referred to this video (as a reference for more detail on the NTG4 and the Blimp) and gave a link to it in my description. Thanks again for producing this video, it certainly helped me when making choices. Cheers Michael
I tried using the NTG4+ with the Canon 80D but the output was not hot enough. The gain on the camera had to be so high you would hear hiss. Too bad I had to return it because I really liked it. I have some tests and review on my channel.
Tom Antos I spoke to Rode, they said it is normal that on battery power the output is low. The gain on the camera had to be turned up too high which will cause hiss. More a problem of the camera and not the mic. But if the mic output was hotter it would of worked great. I think with a external recorded or other better audio equipment you won't have this issue.
Thanks. Surprisingly I like the builtin camera audio in the beginning shots more. It's has more environment sound and the audio itself has more natural reverb or scene. The shotgun one seems too artifical. Consider sound editing more :)
Problem with a recording that has background or ambient sounds recorded together with the subject audio is when editing, it is hard to separate the two so its impossible to get a seamless trabsition. That is why you want to capture clean audio only and then separately record just the ambient sounds and in editing overlay the final audio edit with the ambient sounds.
I have the NTG2 which accepts external phantom power or can be powered by a cheap AA battery. What concerns me about the NTG4 is the built internal lithium battery. What happens when it fails, is it user replaceable or even available as a proprietary battery.
Fantastic video the best one I've seen answers a lot of questions for me I really appreciate it I'm going to upgrade my sound and I'm really struggling with sound because of a road quite close to me and the metal roof on my shed hopefully this will solve all my problems thank you very much for your video
Nice setup Tom. Please how did you pass the XLR cable through the rode boom pole? I couldn't pass through the XLR plugs through mine, is there a special XLR cable for that? Thanks
Great video. Was a big help for helping me buy a mic. I bought the ntg4+. I have a zoom h4n recorder. Can you recommend good settings for the combo? Thanks

I'm Happy that UA-cam exists, but I'm More HAPPY ! That this Channel Exists on UA-cam ! Amazing CHANNEL
After eight years I feel this tutorial is just waiting for me ❤. Thanks a lot man you’re a good teacher
I never even thought of mounting the Zoom recorder on the boom pole like in your boat video. Brilliant!
Mate, seriously, thank you for such a great review and basic tutorial with no frills. Breathe of fresh air. Simple and straight forward. Please keep it up!
I like that you showed examples of each equipment and what it would be like without it!
Just got this whole setup n let me tell you, WAYYYYY BETTER THAN JUST MY RODE VIDEO MICRO.
Was looking for a easy solution for handling a boom and a recorder for years. Your solution is so easy and simply.
this was really helpful! Its a bit more but the quality sounds great!
were you using a lav mic as well at 5:20 or was that just the audio from the ntg4+?
I did a parallel recording with the NTG2 and NGT4+ as separate tracks on a Zoom F8. I preferred the sound from the NTG2, but that's just me :) you can't go wrong with either.
Omg Tom, thank you so much for sharing. The comparison @ 11:50 was awesome. So GREAT results from this protection. I was really really skeptical of your setup but you blew me away.
Great mic! Love the set up with the blimp. Thx Tom!!
You're welcome!
11:52 meh, seems usable to me
I saw this comment seconds before it showed up. Hilarious!
LMAO!
"Can't you just EQ it out? Or use noise reduction?"
"cant u fix it in post?"
@@javierchavarria9312 😉 is what the client said
Funny term that makes me chuckle is that fur for blimps is usually called a "dead wombat" since it's so much bigger. Thanks for the demos!
When I search something I need to learn and see Tom Antos has a video about it. I feel like a retreating soldier who reaches the getaway helicopter! Only way to put it haha Thanks Tom!
Awesome. Good recommendations. It'd be nice if you did a tutorial on the settings for the Zoom and this Rode microphone. Thanks
Such a pleasure to watch someone's video who knows what he is talking about!
That clamp idea for the recorder is brilliant! The lanyard is going in the bin haha
thanks Tom - as always. You gave me some real life scenario and now I am selling some of my old stuff and buy this exact combination because not every film has the budget for a sound guy, but my assistant can work fine with my Zoom H5. Perfect video!
Glad you hear you found my advice helpful. It definitely works for my indie productions.

Junior Del Rosario B great. Your lucky to live in the DR. Would love to come by and help you shoot something there
OMG always i been having that problem and this is the way your fix the problem. I will wait for the chance to buy one. Greating from Texas Tom
Awesome training video, very helpful. I have everything but the blimp, saving up for that. Thank you.
That NTG 2 with that blimp and dead cat could sound so clean. That inspired.
Great review. Nice to how powerful this mic is
Nice to see you're back to active, keep up the good work Tom !
Thnx!
This video convinced and help me to improve my audio setup. Thanks much!
Very helpful video ! your settings please. I bought the ntg4+ but the level is usualy very low ! I'm using the recorder tascam dr60d II.
Thanks !
I tried it with the 60d original and was getting quite noisy results. Is it a preamp problem?
That's the question ! does anyone use the microphone with the tascam ?
It souds like the device you are using has a weak preamp.
What is the difference netween NTG4+ and NTG5?

Thanks for sharing the experience. Excellent set up and video.
any tips on how to set this all up for perfeft clarity and minimal white noise? ive got all the equipment but cant seem to replicate your sound
wow the difference at 11 minutes is unbelievable

Tom don't forget that you can hookup a pair of headphones the the unit.

Doesn't the blimp duplicates the purpose of the dead cat? Or is the for protecting the mic against dropping?

Thank you!
Thank you! Great demonstration, so useful. Thanks for the help.
shotgun mics are used in really noisy environments, in normal situations, you can use a supercardioïd, it will sound way more natural
Can you make a video that shows us how to sync audio with your film footage
Hey Tom! Big fan! Can you do a tutorial on how you clean your audio? What program you use to get a little hiss and hum out.
If you have Adobe Creative Cloud, you can use Audition, which takes a noise print of the background noise, and then uses phase cancellation to get rid of a lot of it. It works best with constant sounds however. Doesn't work so well for intermittent sounds like cars going by, etc.

Is it possible to connect easily a Zoom H1 to a shotgun(boom) mic?
Daniel Elijah they make an xlr to 3.5 adapter but make sure the H1 puts out phantom power if your mic requires it. Rode makes a video mic that has a 3.5 connector. It's battery powered and works great with an H1.

i cant run the xlr cable inside, how did you do it?
That would likely be the rode boompole pro. It has an opening to run the cable down the centre.
Francisco Sanchez buy a K&M boom pole. Cable is internal and you get quality German manufacture. Not cheap.
one of the best review, doing my first short film , and you totally helped me out, but instead of the zoom h5n, I will be using zoom f3 as my recorder. any thoughts on this ?

Amazing job
Do you have specific advices about tripods for rode boompole ? In case we are regestering alone ?
and I'm not saying the NTG4+ is a bad mic, I think all Rode products are great, just that the NTG3 is a little better.
It also costs almost twice as much - While you do get what you pay for this is for an indie filmmaker's budget
What about a velcro tape for the recorder instead of a adapter that sticks out?
Best review so far. Anymore updates would be welcome.
psysword this is still my set up
@ 10:50 in this video , what video cam n accessories are you using? can u plz list them

@@TomAntos have you tried at875r for indoor dialogue? Any preference for the indoor mikes?

Canon audio input is awful, get a juiced link or move to Sony
in the first example, I prefer the internal mic of the camera, more natural
Thanks Tom, I really enjoyed this video.
Thanks. Surprisingly I like the builtin camera audio in the beginning shots more. It's has more environment sound and the audio itself has more natural reverb or scene. The shotgun one seems too artifical. Consider sound editing more :)
