  • Hello everyone, in today's tropical fruit video we are going to take a closer look at the Chupa Chupa tree aka South American Sapote or Sapote (Quararibea cordata).
    *This fruit is not to be confused with Mamey Sapote (Pouteria sapota) which is a different fruit. But in Florida if you say Sapote it refers to Mamey Sapote, In Colombia if you say Sapote it refers to Chupa Chupa (Quararibea cordata).
    The tree itself is a large evergreen tree that bears delicious orange fruits that taste like sweet pumpkin pie with subtle notes of cinnamon.
    This tree is considered an 'extreme tropical' meaning that in Florida it will need protection to grow as it is sensitive to our winters in Florida.
    You can find Chupa chupa (Quararibea cordata) at Fruit and Spice Park in Miami Florida, but I have not seen it flowering or fruiting.
    You can tell when the chupa chupa fruits are ready to harvest because it forms a yellow line near the top of the fruit as well as the top starts to pop out.
    The name 'Chupa Chupa' means 'Suck-Suck' in Spanish, referring to how you must suck on the seed and fiber to extract the juicy and sweet parts of the fruit.
    I have seedlings of chupa chupa (Quararibea cordata) growing at my farm as well as my house. They are doing great but could do better if I corrected the soil deficiencies.

    Ese árbol está hermoso. Those warts in the leaves are normal, no issue at all. Zapotes in our Valle del Cauca are very common. We are so blessed in that sense. There a quite some species similar to this one, many of them in Colombia. I hope you can cultivate some of those too. Variety of tropical fruits in our country is astounding.

      The tree probably could be propagated by grafting. However to import scions there are several hurdles to over come with usda/fsis regulations

    I heard the fruit takes 2 years to grow from the flower, if that’s true that would be crazy

      Kool I am sure you needed a mature or a well established tree to do so. By doing do it may take shorter times to fruit versus propagation via seed. I have an old friend in bogota that is growing some pest resistant Andean blueberry. We went to school at univ of Georgia. His an entomologist I am a microbiologist

    You need.to ship them to the US make that $$

    • @gardenflorida
      @gardenflorida  3 роки тому

      In the future I am planning to start shipping fruits from here but it will be a challange. Colombia has so many export restrictions. Perhaphs a seed selling business out of Colombia might be more reasonable. But I hope to ship you fruits from Colombia in the future.

      This is Colombian Sapote - different from sapote such as Mamey sapote or white sapote. It’s actually Quararibea cordata
