  • A short study about a rare O Soto Gari variation and a unusual, but very effective gripping tactic that one of the best modern-day judokas Shohei Ono likes to use.

    Oh my god, I love this video! I was looking for a judo channel like this for so long! The hip hop, the editing, the instruction, it's beautiful! Subscribed!
    If I can offer a suggestion, switch up the music when you go from one part of the video to another. This video has a lot of information and you edit it really well to show the movements but you might want to break it up with different music every section or so. I'm going to go watch the rest of your videos now. Thank you! This video made my O Soto Gari game stronger!

      Thanks man! Glad to hear that. I see your point about the music, I had this thought earlier, but it's kind of hard to find a lot of good songs without strict copyrights, so I have to use them cautiously.

    Thank you for your analysis videos! They're very interesting and clear. Especially good, that it shows some kind of details or not traditional use of technics. Looking forward to new videos!

    Ono also utilises a double sleeve grip for Uchimata. It appears that he often favours more unique grips.

    I know this is an old video, but Ono's Osoto Gari that you highlight here is a textbook copy of Koga Toshihiko's technique where he hooks the knee, extends upwards to pin the opponent in place, then takes another step to get into position for reaping. Someone recently started posting his old videos on UA-cam if you care to watch. Also, you are somewhat incorrect about the lack of arm control using the "Armpit" grip. The way the Japanese grip the armpit, they gather material from the sleeve *into* the armpit pocket and it gives you a ton of control over the arm and upper body. If done correctly even regripping inside is very difficult for the opponent. I use this grip often against stronger opponents and to negate a gripping advantage without having to switch stance when I get outgripped. Now, getting material gathered into the armpit is quite difficult once your opponent expects it, so you are correct that if you fail to collect sleeve material you lose arm control relative to a standard Tsurite grip. Great video!

    Mister, first congrats on your channel. I´ve been searching for this content for years. The details and explanations make all the difference in the world. I was wondering if you could recommend me a judo book please? I´m learning judo tactics and technique by myself, and in this days i have the time to push a little bit more. I train boxing, and, i believe that judo grips, footwork, movement and tactics will help to improve my clinch-close distance.
    I´m a huge judo fan. Please continue with this videos!!
    Thank you in advanced

      Thanks for watching, glad to hear that! When it comes to books there are many great Judo books, it really depends on what are you looking for. There is a good thread on reddit about Judo books that has a lot of options and even some links (www.reddit.com/r/judo/comments/ak67js/help_i_cannot_seem_to_stop_buying_judo_books/). I hope this helps you.

      So an invalid thesis since that's an osoto otoshi according to the canon of judo way before his time this technique was already defined

    Is he literally grabbing in your armpit? Or grabbing lapel and pushing that in the armpit?

    • @decodingjudo-grapplerkingd5486
      @decodingjudo-grapplerkingd5486  4 роки тому +2

      From what I've seen he does both. But grabbing under the arm gives tighter grip, while pushing lapel in leaves some slack, therefore opponent has more space for movements.

      Decoding Judo - Grappler Kingdom thanks! Do you have any videos on left -handed judokas?

    • @decodingjudo-grapplerkingd5486
      @decodingjudo-grapplerkingd5486  4 роки тому +2

      Sorry for late reply, at the moment I think the best left handed/stanced judoka is Joshiro Maruyama. At some point in future I'll try to make a breakdown of his Uchi Mata. Here are some of his highlights: ua-cam.com/video/mvWw-Qq_vPQ/v-deo.html. Also I have a video of Won Hee Lee's Tai Otoshi which he usually do to his left side. Here is the video: ua-cam.com/video/oeGWj1JaI6o/v-deo.html.

      @JudoHighlights2015 4 роки тому +2

      Hey - Sorry for jumping in here, but I've trained with people who have trained with Ono. It's a Tenri technique, they grab the BICEP because you're able to get the defense that comes with the armpit, but also they can't just turn and break the grip which makes it possible to also do uchimata with this grip.
