- Rainforests are sacrificed to provide the rubber used in tires, even though alternatives exist. 70% of the global rubber harvest goes to the tire industry, which must now meet new supply chain rules approved by the European Parliament in April 2024.
The rules are designed to ensure due diligence and corporate accountability. Once the law takes effect, manufacturers in the EU will need to show their tires do not contain natural rubber from deforested land. The likes of Continental and Michelin will be obliged to make their supply chains more transparent. This certification process poses a problem for producers. Most natural rubber is produced in Asia. The supply chains from rubber farmers through various intermediaries to Europe have, however, been largely nontransparent to date. Companies are therefore exploring alternative materials and methods.
Tire manufacturer Pirelli, for example, is working with sustainable producers in Thailand. Michelin is testing high-tech tires to increase the service life of its products. And Continental, in cooperation with a leading German research institute, is looking into a raw material that could act as a substitute: the Russian dandelion. If cultivated on a large scale in Europe, it could help offset the demand for natural rubber. In addition, discarded old tires could be retreaded, recycled, and put back on the market - instead of ending up on a landfill site. Is the industry having a genuine change of heart, or are these merely examples of greenwashing?

We need to change the way tyres are made, not the way we travel.
We need solutions, not back to the cave (or sardine tin mass travel experiences).

@@demil3618 There are limits to growth, and if you want to preserve democracy you need to provide ability to travel to all people not just the elite that has money, individual transport is awesome but currently unsustainable, and more and more people are loosing the privilege to have one, not to say if developed countries catch up and they get cars in quantity that first world has it will be really unsustainable.
Nice documentary, but it could also have touched the whole idea of of governments striving for the existence of a better and more affordable public transportation system. My reasoning is that if we keep ourselves in the tires aspects of vehicles 40 people needing 80 tires could fit in a bus that only needs 4 tires.

I´m certain there are places where there is plenty of work to be done and other places where you would never be able to cede a personal vehicle but striving for lower commuting times or supplying more transit routes isn´t a far cry from reality.
@@professionaltaxevader4638 here in backwards semi rural Alabama we don't have public transportation. Cabs are also expensive per mile for regular folks working retail jobs.
Rubber trees are the best for reforestatio n in Mindanao, the Philippines. Farmers doesn't have to wait long to generate income from rubber than from hardwood trees planted on denuded land.
restoring the forest to its original ecosystem is best in the long run. tax carbon by use and the rich will pay much more and distribute their taxes to the lower income people who use far fewer resources. wealth redistribution. then that farmer will only have to work a little.
An important aspect that was never mentioned in this excellent documentary is that the more agressive the acceleration, turning and braking, the greater the wear. Therefore if people are as concerned by the climate as we'd like to think they'll use their personal agency to drive as gently as possible as little as possible. As they did say in this presentation, everything marketing is BIGGER, MORE POWER, AGRESSIVE !!!
people who want to save their precious salary try to drive carefully... cars are expensive and getting new tires also. Some young people however want to brag and burn rubber.
I bike 🚲 all the time, yes in winter too, scrapped my car as not drive teens around which would have only of crippled them up! Great doc, I majored in Sylviculture and left my career over disgust of how things work in Québec, we live in a car culture, people use them like they are their legs then blame their liabilities to function on old age 😊 !

EVs "consume" tires more quickly, so the proliferation of EVs naturally means higher consumption of rubber and therefore demand for rubber. Good news if you're invested in the supply chain.

@@ecoideazventures6417 EVs are a lot heavier than ICE vehicles of equivalent size. This puts greater strain on the tires causing them to wear out more quickly. This is why the proliferation of EVs have been a boon for tire companies, its long been a growthless industry but now there's opportunities to market more expensive tires and cater to a new market that would repeat tire purchases more often.
Make cars expensive and public transport available and affordable.The problem will go out.
Or simply: Change the way tyres are made!
I wouldn't want to rely on 3rd party T&Cs, schedules, availability, fare structures, inflexibility etc.
Nothing beats individual transport and my vehicle uses used vegoil- a waste product from restaurants.

What an innovative idea to take gently used tires and retread them!! If this were more widely available it could have the potential to greatly reduce the need for manufacturing so many new tires!
Electric vehicles are much heavier than petroleum vehicles, and are much harder on tires.
I read about that, they require tires intended heavier loads, that cost more but the general tire life is still significantly shorter.
The US military alone uses 48,000,000 litres of fuel per day...
World wide spendage is around 115.00.000 barrels a day.
One barrel is 156 liters - I think. Could be wrong.
That's at least 156×115.000.000 liters every day!
And some people doesn't believe that we can have an effect on climate.

I thougt most tires nowadays are made from synthetic rubber. Oil.
Let's not forget that EVs wear out tires far faster than lighter conventional cars do.
because they have more power/torque. EVs aren't the problem, it's the performance tuning and driving habits. If they just put in torque limiters, problem solved.
We own two EVs. We run Toyo winter tires year around in Canada on both cars. The tires do not wear out differently than they did on our gasoline powered cars. In fact, I would say that they last longer since braking with EVs is most commonly done using regenerative braking.
Be cautious about the accuracy of what you read, be it on the Internet, or with print publications. A lot of the stuff I see about EVs is nonsense, not only about tire wear, but also about charging costs. This is because a lot of the people providing that “information” are not knowledgeable about EVs.
This said #1- we never charge the cars from 0% but instead from 20 or 30% to 80 to 100%. #2- We charge at home. Even if all you have is a 100 Amp electrical panel (200 Amp is better), the car can be charged at night when both the electricity rates are lower and there is less demand from your home. Finally, #3- Unless someone is driving 450 km (280 miles) a day, there is no reason to charge the car every day. Think about it, with a gasoline car do you top it off every day? From experience over the last 5 years, a full charge, from 0 to 100%, with either of our cars would cost only $7 to $8 Canadian. Indeed, recharging the cars has never cost us that much at home and the reality is that we aren’t able to identify a cost increase that can be clearly attributed to charging. This would not be the case with a gasoline powered car.
EVs are the future, irrespective of the type of batteries that will power them. They will help mitigate climate change which, unless you are very thick, is becoming more obvious as time goes by. What needs to happen now is for people to put pressure on vehicle manufacturers to produce more affordable EVs and for government to create rules that will increase their adoption. That means that apartment/condo dwellers should have access, AT COST, to charging facilities where they live. Governments have no problem with telling everyone what to do. So, for them, this should be a simple thing.
@@forgottenhill159 I drive my ICE vehicle carefully, resulting in the tyres, brakes and driveline lasting for a long time; it's fueled by propane, which in Australia, is a by-product of natural gas extraction and a very clean burning fuel; no heavy battery that requires electricity.
Just to be clear:
It is not the product (tyres) that is to blame. It is the way they are produced- and that's a human decision.
We don't need to change out mobility. We need to change the way tyres are made!
And we need to change the way environmental subjects are reported about, less eco-populist, more _solution_ orientated!
bigger wheels that are offered for cars are oposite to amount of rubber. size refers to aluminium rim size. actualy bigger size mean lower tire profile and thus less rubber if width is same of course

If Michelin's tires are holding longer that's an advantage towards competitors. But I understand the sentiment. Every year more cars, motorcycles are sold globally so demand will grow anyway
If Michelin had worried about this, they would have never introduced the radial tire in 1946. It lasted 2 to 3 times longer than the bias ply tire it replaced. The industry fought against radial tires for 30 years.
The new alternative plant that produce rubber per the news also requires large land area to produce, but the problem will be the same - land clearance, that is not a sustainable/viable option.
It's fascinating that the roots from a flower can be made to a type of rubber. It's great that Continental Tire is doing this innovative work. There was no mention of American companies like Firestone or Goodyear. Perhaps, they are looking for alternatives?

I'm from Kerala, India and we've been growing and producing rubber for three generations now. Due to poor returns for the last 8 years from rubber, I've quit rubber growing and chopped off every single tree on my plantation. I am moving on to fruit crops instead.
Tyre companies are responsible for low price of natural rubber for growers cause they bribe governments to allow them to lease rain forests for dirt cheap rates for ridiculously long tenures. They never even pass on this low cost benefit to tyre buyers. The tyre companies are solely responsible for this ecological damage, cause in the process of making more profits, they kill off traditional rubber growers and then penetrate into rain forests. Imagine, a handful of greedy corporates ruining the planet's eco system and putting the blame on everyone else but them.
The premise is laughably funny. The vast majority of the rubber in a passenger tire is synthetic. Now, truck tires and mining tires are a different matter. They have a larger percentage natural rubber content. Also, worldwide rubber production has been fairly stable since 2017. This is an odd documentary, especially since the competition to growing rubber trees is generally more traditional row crops. That is why many tire companies are looking at alternatives - they are afraid that the labor intensive rubber industry will get pushed out by cheaper to produce crops.

And the growth since 2000 has been quite dramatic. So I'd say this documentary is quite appropriately covering plantations for natural rubber.

Well we need tires, so I don't see much of a workaround. The rainforests are just gonna have to go, they're cool and all but yeah
I'm glad they are cutting down the forest to grow rubber trees. I'm glad that people can have a job and feed their families. The rubber trees give us oxygen just like the forest trees that they have replaced. They are also a habitat for birds and other wildlife just like the forest trees that they have replaced.

To me making smaller tires to extend a problem is like being told: eat less and you'll lose weight
The trend towards bigger tires makes cars handle worse and be less comfortable than they would be with a smaller diameter but a thicker tire profile. Not to mention, far more durable!

Most of the tires I own are marked with made in one of the south east asian countries, but I'm not sure how much of these 40 to 80 euro (each) bicycle tires end up with these workers. I guess not much.
"Sustainable rubber plantation" interesting but how and at what cost? How about reduction of the use of vehicles ie reduced use of rubber? As long as any party in the circle aims at max benefit, rubber cultuvation will continue.

Our Older and Elder actually have plant Rubber in the Middle Katulistiwa Region, But the Price's comodity are very low, except Malaysia and Thailand, becouse those country have relationship and being the commonwealth Europe, now our comodity change by plant The Palm Tree among the rool of the CPO and ISPO or RSPO, in the condition who some Rubber Branch still exist..

It is not natural rubber, it is the synthetic rubber more harmful to the environment. DW can do a documentary on Sythetic rubber, if you are more serious on sustainability.
Now look at total Co2 from production throughout the car's lifespan. That's where the Tesla does very well.
Tires are certainly a problem but you can't expect a manufacturer to solve all problems that've been created by the industry far back.
Most very old vehicles are doing a lot better on this.
The problem is that many see vehicles as consumer products instead of keeping them as long as they can be maintained.

The solution is not to replace tires, the solution is to replace cars, you know with alien technology like trains, buses, bicycles, motorcycles. And no electric cars are not better, they are still cars, and they are heavier and more expensive. You'd think people figured out that carrying more people in the same vehicle or using smaller vehicles is better.

Most people are too fat and too lazy to care about environmental impact and sustainable energy. They will absolutely drive a car 100 percent of the time, despite there being alternatives. I cycle whenever I can and sometimes I'm the only cyclists I see all day. I live in the United States, but I see cars being used everywhere in World when walking will do a much better job. There needs to be a tax on driving or at least people being shamed everytime they ignite their engines.

It made 5 billion people have food on the table instead of starving. The combustion engine is therefore the greatest human invention of all time.
I live off grid. I need larger tires 🛞 for my self sufficiency homestead lifestyle to prepare for societal collapse in the cities I am avoiding. Country dwellers will survive everything except nuclear war .
Europe should stop using tires 🛞 so that they make chance for the developing countries can use tires. 👏
