20 Easy Ways to Exercise Your Dog at Home #32

  • If someone comes to me with a behaviour problem, one of the first questions I ask is “how much exercise does your dog get?”. There is often a definite link between the mental and physical stimulation a dog receives and the amount of trouble the dog gets into. Exercising your dog or puppy can be easy and done within your home.
    The games I’m sharing are great ways to engage your dog’s brain and body if you can’t get out, or you have an injury that means you can’t go for your usual walks or outings with your dog.

    Susan, I can't thank you enough for your training materials. I am a member of Home School The Dog which I was using with my 5-year old husky. She has SO much energy! Since starting Home School she is much calmer (she can normally be very pushy to get attention) and her loose leash walking has gotten better without us even practicing loose leash walking! I am making my way through all of your podcasts/UA-cam videos and will probably start from the beginning once I finish. There is so much in each one. The reason I have been moved to comment on this one is that I also have a 14 year old dog. She normally spends most of her time on her pillow with one walk a day that wears her out. I hadn't done Home School with her because she has arthritis and dementia. It seemed like it would be a hassle for her bordering on unkind. Not so!! I heard you recommend the washcloth game at the beginning of this episode and it seemed easy enough so though I'd try it. She was so very excited about it and was able to do it without help. So now I've started Home School with her and she's got much more energy and interest in everything. I feel terrible that was was just letting her slide into decline. Now, with all the games we can play she's got a new lease on life. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

    So many of these I use to do with my dog (husky) that passed away in May just before age 12. He loved them. We randomly would run through the house or I would hide. They were so fun. Thanks for the happy memories.

    Love the muffin tin idea! Saves a LOT of money over buying plastic toys for the same purpose. I still have trouble with the back up. My huge dog is paranoid of bumping into things (even when nothing is there) and turns her body to get the treat instead of backing straight. We have obtained a solid backup of 2 baby steps. LOL. Really, without things like the search for kong games, she probably would have destroyed my house. Now she is older so its all just great fun.

    • @wilmab4120
      @wilmab4120 Рік тому

      You can teach the backing up by sitting on a chair, throwing a treat under it so the dog has to go under to get it, then it will automatically start to lift a hind paw to start backing out, try to click the dog for lifting its hind paw, when it understands you can increase difficulty. I think pam's dog academy has a video with more in detail instructions, and there's probably many other videos on teaching back up with the chair method and clicker if that one doesn't exist anymore.

    This makes me feel much better because I have been doing a lot of these types of games at home but was still feeling kind of bad for not walking my girl or taking her to places she can properly run. It's quite difficult to find appropriate places since she is SO dog-reactive.

    I am indeed not so mobil anymore , but my sport is dog dancing . My dogs love it and I love it .( and I am not so bad with it . 🤩🤩Won several first places .) It is a very mind and body stimulating sport because you have to learn several trics ( nog only sit and lay down and turn around ) Almost every day I do train a few trics . Also good for MY body and mind because I have to memorise A LOT of commands ( good to prevent Alzheimer 😜😜) Simonne / Belgium

    Your training materials are excellent. I would like to know a bit about how you work on a dog's physical fitness, though. I have a 7 year old lurcher who seems to be showing signs of arthritis: he is lame after rest, and stiff, but it seems to go once he starts walking. Our very good vet has advised that we keep him on the lead for short walks until it improves, but it isn't showing signs of improving. I guess it is partly genetic, but I also worry that we have over done the ball games with him. Do you have any tips on maintaining a dog's physical health, and what to do when they are repeatedly stiff after rest? We get this sort of advice for humans who like to run in abundance, but much less for dogs!

    Awesome episode as always! :) Do you think you could do a short video showing your process with Leg Weaves or any other simple tricks without luring? I don't know if I fully understood your description without seeing being able to see it and I'm really curious how you teach tricks since everything I had learned prior to finding your content was through food lures. I imagine target sticks, hand targets, and target objects as well as methods similar to what you just described? Thank you!!

    We've been playing a lot of these games, and I love them! But, with the "magic cup" Hera just keeps going for any cup, doesn't use her nose at all, and same goes for hiding a treat in my hands for her to "guess" in which one is it. -_- She gets rewarded for getting the right cup, but it doesn't help (it happens even though she SEES where I put the food/treat, we haven't "graduated" yet to the point of me actually hiding them). Do you have any suggestions on how do I teach her correctly what to do? Also, in her aeagerness ttempts to predict what I'll ask of her (especially during push-ups), she does whatever she thinks I'll ask instead of waiting for me to ask. How do I teach her to actually wait for the cue? :D And during fetch, she sometimes stops to sniff or look at something instead of bringing the toy straight back to me.
