I was born in Van Nuys and grew up in Altadena and South Pasadena during the 60-70's. I remember hiking up to the summit of Mount Wilson on those hot summer days. The Santa Ana wind was a blessing in that the smog in the LA Basin was blown out into the Pacific Ocean, and I could actually look into DLA with an unobstructed view. As was mentioned in this video, fire season also was high during the summer, and the wind could create a nightmare for firefighters in a fire. At 60, Michigan is now home for me. I have family members interred at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Glendale. I come home once in a while to visit. Southern California will always be in my heart. It is 5/8/20 as I type this out. Gavin Newsom is starting to open up places in California. COVID-19 is not a joke, my brothers and sisters. Please be safe, follow current practices, and look after one another! Peace and love. Dan. Benton Harbor, MI.

Third centurion Californian here...I worked out at Forest Lawn In Glendale..the Terrazzo floors there...
I grew up in Downey 60-90s then migrated North I miss Southern California and the beaches...the 605/5 intersection was down the street! My Son is In Minnesota doing Terrazzo....I'll hang on to California till the day I die....but what it's coming to I'm glad my grandchildren are In Minnesota 🤷 the only thing that really hurts is my granddaughter likes the Vikings! Dad took me to my first Ram game in 1969!

the extirpation of the Grizzly Bear in the lower 48 in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado Oregon the Cascade Mountain ecosystem in Washington, and many areas of California is the biggest crime of the last century, why do I cite these areas? cause all the extirpation areas I cited still are void of people in big numbers in 2021 and Great Grizzly habitat with plenty of food,

This is a wonderful series. I enjoyed every single episode. Thanks to Masters and KCET for doing it. I grew up in LA, mostly in the Echo Park area. I am old enough that I got to experience many things that are now gone. I decided to leave LA many years ago to move to the forests of far northern coastal California. I have no regrets about my choice. Seeing the series validated my decision to leave. So much of what mattered to me in Southern California is now gone. Very, very sad.

I had no idea that Grizzly bears were extinct. Even after seeing one of the preserved specimens at the Natural History Museum and reading that they were extinct, I still could not believe it. I thought it must have been a mistake that was typed on the description. I learned so much from this episode, it made me so incredibly sad to learn about the demise of the grizzly bear but so happy that there is a program like this to educate us. I hope this show comes back for a second season.

Yes, the loss of the grizzly here makes me sad. I find it hard to imagine symbiosis with it and modern life like the less aggressive black bear. I hear the grizzlies were more offensive. Still saddens me.

This is a great series! Will there ever be an episode on Griffith Park, the 110 fwy and the effect Disney had in the Los Feliz/Silverlake Lake/Burbank/Glendale areas? U know California adventure is designed after the mentioned cities! And Disneyland was initially going to be set where the Buena Vista studios are now, before they found the orange grove in Anaheim!
I’ve done a lot of beautification and conservation work throughout the LA basin and SGV water shed! I love our history!

Watching this as the January 2025 fires are still raging, fanned by the Santa Ana "Devil" Winds, and Joan Didion's words from "Los Angeles Notebook" are more poignant now than ever:
"Los Angeles weather is the weather of catastrophe, of apocalypse, of violence, the unpredictability of the Santa Ana. It affects the entire quality of life in Los Angeles. It accentuates its impermanence, its unreliability. The wind shows us just how close to the edge we are."

Wow! I never thought those winds were a problem when I was a kid. They seemed to get worse as the wildlands slowly disappeared & the houses took over with asphalt roads, sidewalks & freeways. There seems to be no end in sight with out current climate changes. I now live in Northern Cali & Shasta County is making some of the same mistakes that Los Angeles has previously done. They are paving this paradise to put up parking lots. Adding to the climate changes & air quality. I may need to leave the state if I want to have a worry free life in my last days on this earth! We call these winds DIABLO WINDS in NorCal!
