Same reaction, that's not a real P90. And you're right, they sound way different. Too bad she doesn't have one. I had two on a mid-60s SG, foolishly traded it for a beautiful Epiphone Sheraton in natural Maple with two humbuckers, listed for up to $900 depending on where you shopped. Worth every bit of 600 when SGs were going for 600 -700. I didn't keep the Sheraton long, didn't sound right. Ended up with a 64 Melody Maker with single coils (as above, but the originals) -- still not the same...there's nothing like a P90.
TheStompboxer you're right. Didn't mean to imply fake P90, should've just said: that's not a P90... But I would like to see her jam on a Les Paul Special or Jr.
Tasty playing. My first guitar was an HSS Stratocaster and pretty much every guitar I own has at least one humbucker. On my Strats, I can split the coils to get a traditional Strat single coil sound. Best of both worlds I’d say.
Thanks for having Lindsay on again, Marty! She does such a great job of explaining what makes each piece of gear distinct and important. Nice explanation of the versatility of an HSS Strat-I love mine to pieces!
I love my 3 pickup ibanez RG. 2 humbuckers in the bridge and neck positions and a single coil in the middle. It’s a great combo for me. I like the middle pickup a lot because it feels like a second bridge pickup in a big way. I also have the out of phase options too. Incredibly well made versatile instrument with an ash body maple fretboard and neck, 24 frets locking nut Floyd rose. $500 well spent.
Great upload. Really dig that Lindsay has been on here. Didn't know about her until I saw her on here awhile back and now I'm a fan. Rock on both of you.
One of my friends recently got a HS Jaguar and I wished I owned it. I’ve got a classic Jazzmaster, a 335, a single p-90 Stratocaster and a single Humbucker Tele. I could have gotten the sound of all of those guitars out of my friends Jag. Probably going to end up selling the others for something more versatile, despite my collector antics.
I can't say this, humbuckers are for leading solos, single coil is for background chords, I use clean and crispy single coil for leading solos as well, so humbuckers for background chords. All other Im completely agree with you. Cheers!
i got a Jackson JS20 Dinky Reverse headstock, and i was worried that the Double HH pickup wasn't versatile because it's exactly what i was looking for oringally a HSS
Nice playing! But, really I don't think there is wrong pickups. I use Les Paul with humbuckers for everything, from blues to hair metal and if you're single coil guy and you need more bite you can always use distortion pedal, Mick Mars of Motley Crue uses single coil strat
To me and this is just my personal preference, you can get a somewhat decent clean sound with a humbucker, but you really can't get a thick rock tone with a single coil, plus adding gain just increases the noise inherant in single coil. I always had humbuckers wired so that I could split the coils , giving me the best of both sounds.
Humbuckers don't sustain more. They do have a bit less harmonic content, and are often wound more so they are a bit darker. Both of these effects make the distortion a bit less fizzier. The P90 is the best or worst of both worlds. It is more dynamic than a humbucker, but less than a normal single coil. It also distorts more on the bass strings so is kind of imbalanced.
Now I just got it at the phone SG pro there's four knobs it's the same as a Gibson two knobs go up and down and I'm trying to figure out how to work these knobs
I play a 2005 MIM Strat with stock single coils. Thinking of maybe upgrading pickups. Anyone have any suggestions? I play mostly rock/blues/classic metal jams.
@@TheStompboxer no my friend, she knows about coil but she knows how it works! Thats rare! Thats why I am suprised! She has so much of detailed knowledge.
@@TheStompboxer my friend I know ir ain't a rocket science! But still how many people know it!? Only dedicated people want to go that deep about knowing about coil! Here I appriciate her dedication!

Cool video and informative. Nice tshirt by the way! I am not sure I agree with the crisp comparison though (but I believe everyone perceives sound differently). I find single coils and P90s creamy (maybe the hum creates a bit of that overdriven effect to my ears) to my ears hum buckers are punchier, an effective way for lead guitar to cut through the mix. Just my two cents!
Ok... so, what’s happening when your switch is in the middle position? I’m guessing middle sing coil, but why? I often play my rhythm in the second notch down so assume that’s using top & middle single coils.
I can’t understand the difference between humbucking pickups & P90s.. The difference between single coil & humbucking is very distinctive as expected..
Josue Landeros A “Floyd” usually refers to a vibrato system, not a pickup. “Vintage pickups” doesn’t mean anything except they’re old. There are vintage single coils and humbuckers.
Yeah girl! Very cool, very informative...sounds great, nice shirt...hope to see you soon on this channel 👍 hello from France...(I have a strat SSH...clearly great👌)
Hey Marty real quick, I’ve been playing guitar for about 6 months now and I play at least an hour a day, sometimes up to 3 if I’m not doing anything, and my chord hand and fingers are used to the guitar but my thumb on my strumming hand hurts like hell all the time/: how long until it gets used to the damn giiiiutar
You can get picks for pretty cheap most places. Some guitar/music stores even have ones they give out for free with their logo on them. Otherwise just keep playing and practicing. You might also try strumming styles using your other fingers, index.
Since you shaved & dyed your hair Marty you look better than ever.
Ray Ross haha

Marty is looking hot these days
Love the way she plays, talks, really great and informative presentation. I learned a lot.
Nice to see Lindsey Ell get the recognition she deserves. Such an incredibly talented guitarist and musician.
Love watching Lindsay's videos. She has a very expressive way of explaining her subject.
Amazing and helpful here! A treat to see Lindsey come back with the information and playing!
That Melody maker doesn't have a p90, that is a single coil, very similar to a strat. Slightly bigger and hotter wound.
pastorkev777 It’s not a P90, but P90’s are also single coils.
@@TheStompboxer true but they do sound quite different from one another.

That melody maker isn’t a p90. It’s just another single coil that Gibson made. The les paul junior had the p90
Thanks for notice me that
mickyp2006 thought you was talking about the p90 sub machine gun 😂

Great video, a very good combination is what Neil Young uses, a Les Paul w/stock P90 in the neck and a mini-humbucker in the bridge
Awesome. Wish I had saw something like this when I first got into electric guitar.
Hey Lindsay, do you have a lesson on how and when to use the different switch positions? What effect or tone does each position produce?

I'm changing out pickups for the first time, this was the perfect video! Thanks so much!
The "right" pickup to use to demonstrate a P90 would have been an actual P90...

Hey Marty. Please do a lesson on ZZ Top Gimme All Your Lovin. Thanks
Can one convert a strat and add a humbucker? Or do you have to buy a new strat with that combo?
I've build a Duesenberg Domino P90 in the bridge position of my Fender Duo sonic.
It sounds awesome!!

Now I just got it at the phone SG pro there's four knobs it's the same as a Gibson two knobs go up and down and I'm trying to figure out how to work these knobs
as someone who grew up in the 90's, the P-90 sound really brings back memories
Lindsay is great as always, never seen a P90 that looked like a regular (covered) single coil.
aeroshack I agree, is that an actual P90?
That’s not a P90. It is a smaller single coil Gibson used on Melody Makers and a handful of other models.
Don't think that's a p90 5:25
this really helped considering i'm currently ordering my first custom guitar right now, definitely gonna get a humbucker and two single coils
Definitely going to change my bridge single coil pickup to p90 as I have a mount for it already on my squier strat. Gj!
Wow awesome. Put me down as a Yes for more Lindsay videos.
Did I hear Wildfire there? Love that song.
I heard it too. :)
Great explanation, but you could have used a loop pedal (Marty has one) ;-) for the final example. Cheers
Marty looks so young without a collared shirt on. Could literally be a student at my highschool. Hip
What kind of guitar would I need for Guns N’ Roses or nirvana or third blind eye?

Ok... so, what’s happening when your switch is in the middle position?

Middle position on strat is middle pickup. The position between top and middle is neck pickup and middle pickup in parallel.
Next video on best Electric Guitar please
Wow cool girl, nice basic walkthrough of them, you should do pick up position next!
So stoked for Lindsay here! She’s bad ass and amazing live too!
good pickup line
i m getting a new guitar but it looks like a strat but its not should i change the pikups
That's a lot of info to go off of
Nice tone!
I just can’t be comfortable with a hum bucker in the bridge of strat, but a P90 would be amazing...
you can split the coil tho
quick question, or that fender deluxe looks like the guitar is going into a jack called Vibrato... ummm WTF is that?
I love your playing!!!
Nancy Wilson....Liz buckingham.....Orianthi.....LINDSAY ELL!!!!!!
Where’d you get that last strat from?
I'm an Hss Stratocaster kinda guy. Best of both worlds!

I can’t understand the difference between humbucking pickups & P90s.. The difference between single coil & humbucking is very distinctive as expected..
What about splitters?
But the best pickups are MFD by Leo Fender, at least people say this, i'm waiting for my first G&L to arrive today.
What about gold foils?
