You did a great job explaining what you like and dislike about the three different pieces of luggage, great job. We are old people, retired, tired of dragging crap broken luggage around with us. We didn’t know about Calpak, we’re going to look into it. Many thanks for going to the trouble you did to evaluate the three different products. We really appreciate you young whipper snappers opinions, thank you. JD in Missouri
Thanks for posting this review. I found it more helpful than any of the other carry-on, hard-sided, luggage reviews out there! There seems to be a suspicious amount of videos out there right now, all raving about the Away, and for me, I don't see it being worth the price. I really appreciated how you broke it down in very practical terms too.
Exactly and what is wrong is that because people only do reviews and not go to stores anymore is the downside. I went to the away store and the luggage quality is literally the exact same as calpak but 3 times the size. The only one I’d ever buy from away is the bigger cart on with the electable battery and pocket. Buy for now they don’t have my preferred color so I won’t buy it until then
I just bought a set of Away luggage from large medium to carry on. First off for battery of the carry on what the reviewer has is an old version what i have is taking the battery is very easy without opening the luggage just push a little button next to the battery & the battery will pop up & if you travel overseas which thats what we do all the time its very convenient to use with all our gadgets. After flying for thousands of miles for vacations i was really impressed because not even a scratched in my 2 check in luggages and with regards to packing we had a tour for 21 days in Europe & our luggage carries everything we need without a problem. Another thing for the carry on size you can choose 2 sizes small & a little bigger its your choice .
I was choosing between the Raden and the Away suitcase sets. But I purchased the CalPak instead because it does seem a bit more thought out for convenience than luxury. We live in the city as well and traveling with a toddler Ill need reliable luggage without the extras. I’ll be going out of the country with my 4 yr old for the 1st time and I need the trip to be as hassle-free as possible. Thanks for your helpful review!
I bought a Calpak Voyager carry-on for $50 at Marshall’s/TJ Maxx, comparing it to the Away, I do wish I had the compression pad vs the little straps, and the laundry bag, but saving basically $200 is well worth it. the battery in the Away seems like a hassle and it takes up room in the suitcase, I opted for a backpack with a USB port and I can use my own battery pack I already have. Plus the backpack is my personal item which is under the seat, so getting to the battery pack is a lot more convenient. The backpack and the Calpak cost me $100, just the Away sets you back about $250. Doesn’t seem worth it in my opinion. The Calpak still has the TSA lock as well.
Thank you for the great review!! I've been looking to purchase a more high-quality luggage than the one I have now, and you're the first person that has mentioned all the qualities/ features that I was looking for!! I've been seeing Calpak around for a while and now I'm convinced it's the best fit for me. Thank you again for the great, thorough and detailed review!!
Away has newer carry-ons that have removable battery packs-they just pop right out. Check with them to see if they can provide a more portable battery. They also make carry-ons with an expandable pocket on the front that will hold a laptop or tablet.
Yeap, the new models have ejectable battery packs. Unfortunately this one is an older model so it's screwed onto the back. I believe Away was talking about fixing this but not sure where they left off with that...
This is so helpful. Thank you. I have spent hours researching luggage as I need to buy a new set. For years I have been traveling with Samsonite, but I have noticed that the newer Samsonite models are not holding up to the frequency of my cross-country travel. I'm finally interested in branching out and this is one of the first helpful reviews I have found. Thank you!
This is best luggage review video. I’ve been debating for a while on whether to get the Calpak or Away carryon and checked bags. Personally, I don’t need a built in charger on my bag. So, I’ll definitely be looking at getting a Calpak suitcase. Thank you for the great review.
Is that Away carry on an older model? The current Away bags battery pack goes in and out by spring tension. You just press in and it pops in/out. So when you store your bag in the overhead you just press the battery pack out to use in flight. No screwdriver needed. You don’t even have to open the suitcase. Great review by the way.
I believe it's one of the first models, my boyfriend bought it when Away first hit the market. Good to know the battery pack can be popped out now! Thanks for watching, I really appreciate it.
The batteries are slow as hell compared to portable battery packs like Anker, Ravpower, etc.. The outer material of the carry-on isn't worth the price tag either, imo.
You (or your boyfriend) can actually contact Away and they will send you a kit to change the battery to the new style OR they will fix it for you for free!
I've yet to encounter any airlines not accepting the Calpak carry-on but I know that many local European carriers have much smaller size restrictions so you're definitely right to be mindful of that.
This was really helpful and easy to understand and you weren't annoying like many other reviewers, can't wait to watch more on your channel! thanks, x
GREAT review! By far the best in terms of practicality. I was leaning toward the Calpak and now I’m convinced it is the best fit for me. Thanks for helping me make a decision!!!
Very helpful info, I think the battery pack is pretty unnecessary too. I'm currently looking for a nice hardside piece of checked luggage. I'm sick of stuff getting broken and shampoo bottles getting squashed. I'm gonna try a calpak!
Hi there! Your review is so helpful. I was torn between Away and Calpak, and find it appalling that there are hardly any reviews on Calpak but there’s a ton for Away. Personally, I would’ve gone with Away for their amazing warranty, but I just find the little knick knacks like the battery ports so unnecessary. So I’m veering more towards Calpak for the price and practicality. But I also want to know: which of the 2 best meet standard carry on sizing allowance ( for both domestic + international)? And how durable are their shells? Do they scratch easily? Thank you!
Hi! Sorry for the slow response, I was traveling the past week. Thanks for watching and I’m so glad you found my review helpful! In terms of meeting carry-on requirements, international included, I would say the Away is a safer bet since it is slightly smaller than the Calpak. Both have durable shells but the Calpak definitely shows scratches more easily than the Away, but that’s likely because of the difference in color for mine and also the Calpak is a smooth hard shell whereas the Away is slightly bumpier (hopefully that makes sense).
Oh it’s okay, I understand! :) It’s great to know they both held up just fine. Scratches on the Calpak doesn’t seem like a big deal, at least for me. As long as they get the job done to and from, I’m not too worried about it. Thank you again for replying!
Thank u for this video! I was about to purchase the away luggage, but now that I saw more details and it make sense about the portable batterie being on top. Better to go for cal park! Thanks!
glad i just got a calpak off FB marketplace for like half the price, too :) especially after the verge article about Away. cant believe i was considering spending over $200 on a carryon suitcase, yikes.
This is a great video! So helpful! Have been thinking his over for a little while. The Calpak is like $160 in Canada if that helps anyone. Found it online at Nordstrom. All about just bringing portable batteries to have on hand in the plane. Thanks again!!!
Try samsonite true frame carry on. Bit heavy but secure as, well made and set up well inside. I think you’ll love it, just no charger. But grab note9 and you’ll be sweet
Thank you for your reviews! Like others, I was searching for reviews on the AWAY and am now interested in the Calpak - which seems more practical. My husband travels for work and I am wondering if a suit hanger would fit in any of these carryons?
Debating on getting luggage and so happy to come across your comparisons. Do you still like your Calpak? I saw reviews that the wheels break easily especially for heavy packers. Thx!
I bought the CalPak and then watched your review. Confirmed everything for me after a couple of days of research and purchase: The Away is nice, they have a store in my city. But I too, don't need the battery, their version of a laundry bag, or that big price. The CalPak Cyrus can be found (the 20" international carry on") for about $80 online right now if you look around. Thanks for a fair review. I couldn't agree more about that side handle on a case- if I have to carry it (or put it up above me on a train or a airplane bin) I want even weight distribution. Hard shells can crack if they are somewhat empty I've been told by a baggage handler. Always belt your bag if checking it....Otherwise your stuff may come down the turnstile in a plastic bag. Get a real ID tag for inside and out.
Thanks for watching! I'm glad you found my review helpful. And yes, definitely be careful with hard shells - I've seen ones cracked open on the carousel a few times.
So unfortunately this was one of the first models of the Away - the new models now have ejectable batteries. I believe they were talking about figuring out a way to fix this issue with the old models but not sure where they left off with that...
Thanks for sharing! I read really bad reviews about Calpak. It falls apart and is not well made. Yours looks relatively new. How has it been holding up?
Does the calpak fit inside the over head bins easily? When I looked at the dimensions one of the sides is half an inch bigger than the size requirements for delta airlines. Just want to check that you haven’t had any problems with the size and traveling with it before I purchase it!
brittney arrington hi! Yes, the calpak fits perfectly in the overhead bin for me. However, if you’re flying European airlines I would double check the size restrictions since they can often times be a lot stricter.
I also noticed the calpak carry on fit being 0.5 inches larger than the requirements. Did you purchase it? if so did you have any issues as a carry on? I also want to purchase it but do not want to have any problems taking it as a carry on.
it looks nice and all that but when i start comparing with cheaper brands, the difference is too big imo. kohls gonna be selling luggage for 50 bucks on black friday week while a carry on away is like $225 if u use the discount
away has free lifetime warranty on everything, you'll buy several $50 luggage in that time. buying high quality things once ends up saving money even if its more $ up front.
@@climaxhubbard u sure that "lifetime" isn't a limited lifetime??? Brought 2 skyway Oasis for $50 each and got a $30 gift card in return at kohls. Only big differences I see are mine can't charge and no lock... No biggie imo. Also mine luggages came with a "lifetime" guarantee...with tons of small fine print 😂
Does the Calpak still fit in the overhead bin? Most airlines only allow 22 x 14 x 9 in and this is 21.5 x 15 x 10 in. I really want the MEDORA CARRY-ON LUGGAGE - AURORA PINK but I'm afraid that it's too big :(
It definitely depends on the airline, especially if you're flying a local carrier, but I've had no problems on all the american carriers and international carriers I've flown!
Hi Lauren! I'm really torn between the AWAY 2-Piece Set and the CALPAK 2-Piece Astyll set... I'm leaning towards the CALPAK, but I have a few concerns... How has your experience been with the Calpak Astyll since you've traveled with it?? I know the carry-on doesn't typically take as much damage as the checked one would. But I've seen a few reviews with people complaining about the hardshell exterior breaking easily, especially when they've checked the bags while flying internationally. Specifically, reviewers mentioned that the corners of the luggage were getting cracked/broken easily and that the luggage doesn't hold up long at all after going through baggage a few times. Any advice?
Hi Lynsey! I'm sorry about the delayed response so I hope my feedback now is still helpful. I've had no issues with either my carry-on nor the check-in suitcase and I've travelled to both Greece and Japan with them. I read those reviews too before I purchased but decided to take a chance and see for myself since they're relatively inexpensive compared to other luggage companies and so far I've yet to encounter any sort of cracking/damage.
Great review! I'm traveling to Australia and durable luggage is imperative. I find the handle quality varies greatly in quality. How is the Calpak handle?
You are right about the built-in in batteries in the luggage. You can't use them as much and carry them around all the time. Thank you for showing us other luggages to opt for other than the overrated "Away".
CalPak has that horrible useless cross strap inside (most luggage does) and I can’t stand it. Raden went out of business because most airlines banned smart luggage. I love my Away Carry-on, it’s very functional, but on the less expensive side, I love my Ben Sherman Carry-on ($60) which has the zipper compartment shield on both sides of the luggage. The Away bag weighs 8lbs which is a bummer, my Ben Sherman bag is 6.2 lbs which is better for international travel due to stricter weight requirements in carry-ons than domestic flights in America.
Get $20 off your Away purchase: fbuy.me/hl_HP
Lauren Lora I’m not getting $20 off when I click your link! Is it still valid?
It should be! I'm going to email Away to try and troubleshoot. Sorry about that!
So it looks like it's no longer valid and Away won't provide me with a code that doesn't expire after a certain amount of uses :(
Lauren Lora ah that sucks! Thanks for finding out :)
I really want the marble one but its so expensive now! IF you would find a dupe of the same one just less expensive would be awsome!

I think it's important to note Away also has a lifetime limited warranty
Yes! Thanks for mentioning :)
the lifetime warranty is what makes it expensive. You basically bought atleast 3 luggage.
Alison witt it’s also appropriate to note that the Away luggage now offers ejectable batteries.

HeyItsAsmus I’ve read a lot of comments on other videos about how their CalPak suitcases are breaking. How is yours holding up?
The new away carry-on battery just pops up from the suitcase!
How you calpak suitcase holding up?
The battery pack would be beneficial when on long flights. Plus, it’s one more thing you don’t have to worry about packing

Thank you for your reviews! Like others, I was searching for reviews on the AWAY and am now interested in the Calpak - which seems more practical. My husband travels for work and I am wondering if a suit hanger would fit in any of these carryons?
Great video. The luggage is so expensive. I own a small carryon and just carry a portable charger with me in my purse. Way easier.
Thanks! Yeah, I usually travel with the Calpak and a small portable charger.
Thanks I’ve been eyeing the away bag and needed an in-depth review!
You're welcome! :)

Take the battery out and use it don’t leave it up there in the luggage, the whole point is not to use your own when you have one in your away luggage
Thx for the reviews 💕
Is the calpak the carryon version ?
Kristina Angelina I think so
They're all carry-ons :)
Great Review👏🏾😃
Compression "technology"?? LOL
Note: Mayor airlines have change policies containing build in batteries in luggages.
When I got my calpak suitcase, they didn't have the marble 😭😭😭 I should have waited
JustJessie I waited specifically for the marble to be in stock! Luckily it came in just in time for my trip 😂
How has the calpak hold up?
i actually made a follow up video of how the suitcase has held up since i first posted this review! ua-cam.com/video/T6OzlcFlytk/v-deo.html
Wow. Really sounds like the away is very overrated. I would just go to Marshalls and get a suitcase for 50 bucks.
nice vid
Hi
CalPak has that horrible useless cross strap inside (most luggage does) and I can’t stand it. Raden went out of business because most airlines banned smart luggage. I love my Away Carry-on, it’s very functional, but on the less expensive side, I love my Ben Sherman Carry-on ($60) which has the zipper compartment shield on both sides of the luggage. The Away bag weighs 8lbs which is a bummer, my Ben Sherman bag is 6.2 lbs which is better for international travel due to stricter weight requirements in carry-ons than domestic flights in America.
@2:04 do you know how spoiler alerts work?? It’s in the name! 🤦🏾♀️
Raden isn't in business anymore.
Yikes! Thanks for the update.
