    How much does Apple pay software engineers? When it comes to salaries for software engineers, it can be difficult to find accurate information. In this video I talk about the salaries for software engineers at Apple. We'll talk about salaries for entry level software engineers, senior software engineers, staff software engineers, and even principal software engineers. Not only do we talk about salaries but we also talk about the benefits that software engineers at Apple get.
    Some background for those unaware of Apple. This is one of the richest companies in the world and largely employs iOS software engineers that typically work with objective-c and swift. They also employ software engineers working on macOS along with Apple silicon.
    If you have any questions about Apple software engineer salaries or benefits then let me know in the comments below.

    Well I know 15 years ago my cousin who worked for Apple as a lead systems engineer for their broadcast software division was making north of $150k plus stock options before he left to work for Fox Broadcasting for north of $200k a year. He and his staff were brought into Apple when they acquired the company he was working for that built control systems for television stations and networks. Mind you at the time the first iPhone hadn't even been announced let alone released. Mind you three years earlier he had been working at a rural TV station that was paying him less than $50k a year to be their IT guy and they refused to give him a $5k raise so he applied to work for one of their system vendors who gave him a $25k raise and Apple doubled his salary there when they bought out the company, so he was beyond elated with the pay increases he had received.

    Hey Cody great video, just had one question about the stock grant. I hear stock being described this way in many public companies, and would like some clarity. Taking the entry level example, the stock grant is 24K/year. Does this mean that you are given 24K worth of shares in your first year, meaning that if the stock price were to double, your year's worth of stock grant would be worth 48K?

    • @CodyEngelCodes
      @CodyEngelCodes  2 роки тому +14

      Yes that is correct. You are granted the shares at the start of your employment. I have a more recent video about RSUs that is worth a watch, it goes over how I nearly doubled my RSU cash value by doing nothing.

    • @DataQuestLive
      @DataQuestLive 2 роки тому +3

      a roth ira is after tax dollars that you invest on your own. I think the limit is 6500 dollars a year for people under the age of 55 and the growth is tax free. which means that after you retire and want to pull that money out you dont need to pay taxes on it
      a 401k is a benefit. where esentially you invest through your comapany it come directly out of your paycheck, usually the company has a match which means that if you lets say put 5 % of your paycheck and say its 1000 dollars then youre employer can match you and also put 1000.. essentially free money..
      usually reccomended to invest in your 401k up until the match then go for roth then back to 401k

    • @Phaceial
      @Phaceial 2 роки тому +2

      401k backdoor is bypassing the limits by putting money into a Roth 401k and then immediately transferring that money before it earns anything into a Roth IRA. If you try to do this when you earn money in the Roth 401k or from a traditional 401k you pay taxes penalties. This pretty much allows you to put the 6000 limit into a Roth IRA in addition to the 401k limit which is 38500k per year into an account that grows tax free. Pretty much something only the super rich can afford. It's not more common because not all companies offer/match a Roth 401k and even fewer companies allow you you to transfer money out of a 401k while you work there. Roth 401k follows the same tax rules as a Roth IRA.

    • @YashasLokesh287
      @YashasLokesh287 2 роки тому

      the limit is lower or 0 if you make enough money. For those people, they can contribute even more than $6K annually through the Roth 401k

    Great content! Thanks for providing this info available to many! I have a question regarding how the bonus works nowadays at the top Tech companies. When Tech companies mention X dollars for the bonus, what are the typical criteria for getting that bonus? Is it that you can get up to X dollars given the company is doing well AND you are the top performer (top 10%)? Or you are eligible of getting X dollars as long as you meet all your expectations at your level?

    • @CodyEngelCodes
      @CodyEngelCodes  2 роки тому +1

      It really varies on company but the most common one I've seen is having it based on company performance. This is less overhead for managers, and when I've worked places that had a personal performance component managers would just fudge the numbers to make sure you got the full bonus.
      Bonus targets are target, so if the metrics are met you'd get that full amount paid out. Companies also make it so you can exceed that number, for example if the target is 15% and the company can go up to 200% on bonuses you could receive up to 30%.
      Hope that helps.

      While you could do better. Companies aren't going to pay FAANG salaries since Dallas isn't the Bay Area. While those salaries sound impressive (and they are), they are that way because of the cost of living and intense competition for top talent. I've actually seen many similar companies reach out to remote workers, offering them great salaries but it is still a great deal for them (win-win). I think over time, this will smooth out the extremes.

    So I have a quick question, you mention that along with the base salary you get a bonus and a stock bonus. So after the four year vesting period is over and I have received the full stock package will I stop receiving stock bonuses forever?

    • @CodyEngelCodes
      @CodyEngelCodes  Рік тому

      Bonuses tend to be annual unless it's a one time signing bonus and then stock grants tend to refresh on a yearly basis with a new 4 year vesting schedule.

      The numbers are averages so will depend but the the salary bands are going to be around those averages, some make more others make less. For folks that are making much less money than a new job it's always best to avoid disclosing your salary because the company can and will low ball you (this is true for Apple and any other company out there).

    Hey Cody, I don't know if you can clarify this, but I heard that it doesn't matter what position you are at Apple. If they end up firing you or something the position you get released from "title" that will follow you is just "Apple Employee" or something super basic

    • @CodyEngelCodes
      @CodyEngelCodes  2 роки тому +1

      It depends on the company, with Apple you are vested from day one which is fairly normal for most software companies. Honestly if you aren't vested from day one and working in tech, that's a bit of a red flag, especially if the vesting period is more than one year.

    Interesting. My company in Atlanta offers unlimited PTO. I assumed this was a way to stay competitive and keep great talent from leaving. It surprised me to hear Apple doesn't offer unlimited PTO as well.

    • @CodyEngelCodes
      @CodyEngelCodes  3 роки тому +15

      Unlimited PTO is only a real benefit if you take off more than 25 days a year. I made a video about this a while back, but basically unlimited PTO means you don’t accrue time off so the company owes you nothing if you leave. If you accrue PTO and leave a company they have to pay you for your unused PTO.

      At my last job, they started us off with 15 days and bumped us up to 20. Honestly, at the end of every year, we’d all still have 8-12 days left and basically December was a month where nothing much got done.
      Unlimited PTO sounds great until reality hits: your colleagues are learning more about a new system than you are. Your colleagues are in the loop. There wasn’t a single time that I took vacation where I wasn’t checking my email to see what was going on. I think 25 days is an awesome sweet spot. You can take two two week vacations per year and still have five days to play with (obviously you still have sick days).

    • @CodyEngelCodes
      @CodyEngelCodes  2 роки тому +7

      I'd say this is mostly true. Look at Amazon. They treat their warehouse workers poorly and they also have some of the worst compensation and benefits for their tech workers when compared to the industry. Granted the former is treated worse than the latter but relatively speaking they are both treated fairly rough.
