My FIRST WEEK at US University!! British Gal Moves to San Francisco Minerva Vlog 🌎

  • Long time no see. 🌟 I told myself I couldn't post in the first month here. My priority was to settle, meet people, engage with everythinggg and get on top of hectic life. BUT WE'RE SURVIVING (& thriving, maybe???)!!
    For context on me: hello 🌻 my name is Jade, I'm 19 from the UK (near London!) and just finished a gap year where I worked, backpacked around Australia and Europe and grew a whole lot as a person.
    Minerva is this crazy, relatively new university based in San Francisco where the curriculum is designed around the science of learning. Over the 4 years, we move to 7 different cities as a cohort and have integrated city-learning like civic projects and internships within the degree. I choose my major at the end of this year (Foundation Year!), but currently study 4 courses called Multimodal Communications, Empirical Analysis, Formal Analysis and Complex Systems.
    I came to uni late (cri!) because I had issues obtaining my F1 visa!! I missed Freshers' and was therefore THRUST into academic life without a real opportunity to prioritise settling. Enjoy my first week here; can confirm I am very very content. ✨
    Eeeeep if any of you have started university, I HOPE YOU'RE ENJOYING IT!! 🥰 the whole sleep-work-social life balance is still not really working for me (yet!) hahaha x
    ------------------------------
    Hi my name is Jade and welcome to UnJaded Jade! I post every Wednesday about varying topics I truly care about, from self confidence and veganism, to academic help and motivation 💛
    -------------------------------
    How old are you? - 19
    Which camera do you use? - Canon 750D
    When did you start your channel? - 17th Feb 2017
    P.S i love you. so much. thank you for finding me and for being here and for gifting me your time. you are so loved.

    What are your thoughts on using companies such as Amazon and Apple as part of your studies but also being at the climate strike/being someone who pushes for sustainability? Both of those companies thrive on consumerism and capitalism which may be a big part of the reason for climate breakdown. No shade at all, i think it is amazing that you went to protest and obvs you do great things. It would just be interesting to hear your thoughts on the prevention of climate breakdown and capitalism.

    • @lucymarie3287
      @lucymarie3287 5 років тому +5

      @Alex Schofield Thanks for mentioning, I actually wasn't aware of that. But unfortunately, consumerism contributes to climate issues massively, even if not directly. The need to have the latest and greatest creates an abundance of waste which requires energy to recycle/get rid of. We all know apple products have a life span of about 2 years, and make products just so we need to need to buy even more products. Corporate greed will forever be a reason the planet and people are in such a mess. Having said that, Minerva says they are 'nurturing critical wisdom for the sake of the world' so hopefully, that wisdom is used by the class of 2019 to go on to develop products that last and create companies that actually make a difference. Hopefully, they don't fall into the hands of Apple, Amazon or similar corporations.

    I am just so, so, so scared for Jade right now. Everything about this institution is setting off MEGA alarm bells. Firstly why on earth is a girl with straight A*s even entertaining a foundation course? and the names of these "subjects" sound like Scientology tiers.
    She said it herself, 'it sounds super vague and super weird." - it's almost like a cult!
    This institution is so young there's only ONE graduated class, apparently they're all doing silicon valley related jobs, that's hugely suspicious.
    I'm just so on edge, I genuinely want whats best for Jade and it seems like all the other (incredibly informed) commenters expressing concern do too.

      Why is everybody SO critical of minerva? Sure it's overpriced (like any american uni) and an unusual concept, but I haven't heard anything terrible about it from the students who went there.

    • @gooby2211
      @gooby2211 5 років тому +23

      Koals i think everyone is critical because it’s a new uni but also it just has very interesting labels for things that exist in all universities all over the world
      for one, jade talks a lot about the diversity, community, etc but that exists within every university; in terms of diversity that’s a given, people everywhere from different parts of the world attend different unis. in terms of community, while less of a given it’s something we go find on our own, is it not? (not saying it’s easy or always apparent or even exists but its part of the experience) you go out you have fun you see the world on your own time and with different people you find it seems a bit forced here because youre with these exact same people for four years of your life
      second she says you learn different skills since you are attending more “immersive” learning experiences in comparison to lectures (as someone who is an american student i agree that sometimes lectures in the US can be a waste of time but those are based on factors like what class it is or what professor you have or what you are learning that specific day)
      not to mention she talks about gaining “real world experience” through the opportunities that minerva gives you as if they dont exist at other unis which is untrue- plenty of internship opportunities and real world experience based on ur uni u just gotta see what they can provide for you
      idk just a lot of things
      also could be the way she perceives things and how she glorifies it; list goes on and on and yeah sure maybe minerva is an alternative way of thinking but in today’s society it’s unfortunately a poor idea in the sense of getting a degree (esp STEM) because it is not really that recognized

    • @sunidhisobti8989

      Koals ofc you wouldn’t because they won’t criticise what they potentially chose for themselves and ofc would minerva let them talk bad against it?

      @@gooby2211 It isn't an Ivy League but it is recognized. It's obviously expensive (but thank God for financial aid), but so are all north-american universities.

    I don't mean to be rude, but isn't it kind of hypocritical of you to talk about being environmentally conscious and attending the climate strike? On top of already traveling a lot, you're doing a degree that requires a ridiculous amount of flying. Sure, you're vegan and that's really great and all, but you do know how bad flying is for the environment. If you want to slow down climate change, the first thing you should do is take responsibility and change your own lifestyle.
    I have been your subscriber for a long time, but lately your way of presenting yourself as an advocate for sustainable development - while closing your eyes on certain facts that are inconvenient for you - has really started to bug me.

    • @killergriffel
      @killergriffel 5 років тому +10

      Yes, thank you. Choosing to travel a lot of places by plane is valid but it is an unethical choice in evironmental regards and makes her self representation as environmentalist kinda meh

    • @UnJadedJade
      @UnJadedJade  5 років тому +65

      So so so so true. Hypocrisy within environmentalism is SUCH a big issue and something I've discussed a lot with other Minerva students. I completely agree that flying is one of the worst things you can do to live sustainably. In my pros/cons list before I came here, it was 100% one of the cons.
      However, personal choice is not the only way to effect positive change. Systemic, societal, corporational and governmental change has further-reaching impacts that will better facilitate sustainable individual choices. Long-term, I really do think this uni education is giving me tools to lobby those changes, especially from different cultural perspectives. We had a professional from Climate Outreach give a 3-hour talk on how to approach government officials, which was very cool!
      So yes, at the end of the day I really do try!! I very very rarely buy new clothes, eat vegan, spread awareness etc, but there's SO much more I could and should do. I'm not being intentionally ignorant x

      @@UnJadedJade I agree that personal choice is not the only way to effect positive change. However, through your choices to obtain a degree by flying way more than you truly need to and otherwise flying a lot, you are 100% being part of the hypocrisy issue. Learning how to lobby governmental changes sure is important, but why would anyone take an activist seriously when they can't even prioritize the right things themselves. A hypocrite spreading awareness and participating in strikes and lobbying is just plain idiotic. You acknowledge hypocrisy within environmentalism to be an issue, yet you're consciously choosing to be part of it.

      Minerva is prestigious, people that now go to Oxford got rejected from there, you have to be really really smart to go, the entrance aptitude tests require you to have an IQ of near genius, so no offence but its not likely you would get in as the acceptance rate is lower than Harvard.

      @@maneskinnnnn7190 The acceptance rate is only low because of Minerva cheating potential students by including incomplete admissions as admissions. This shows Minerva has reckless staff members.
      People that go to Oxford get rejected from there, but that doesn't mean it's a prestigious university. It means it has a bad selection process, as Oxford is one of the best universities in the world and for Minerva to not take note of that despite Minervas awful reputation, it just shows Minervas not even run as a good business, let alone a good educational institute.
      You don't need to have an IQ of a near genius to get into Minerva. If so, there would be many geniuses in Minerva. We know there aren't because there are no reports of Minerva graduates becoming Elon Musk type figures. There are no recognisable names that come out of Minerva. Yes, only one cohort has graduated, but if they were geniuses they would have, oh, I don't know, done something reputable that contributes to the world?
      You are either a troll or one of the people Minerva pays to write fake/good reviews about. It's obvious Minerva recruits people to bully those who see the university as it is: utter shite, apart from its travelling.

    • @Charlotte-iq8hk
      @Charlotte-iq8hk 5 років тому +5

      Minerva may not be prestigious (yet at least) but I disagree with your comment. Employers are looking for people that are different, they often don’t want 5 different people that have all taken their GCSEs, done A-Levels then gone to Bristol Uni. They now want you to have something unique or have done other things that aren’t “usual”. Just following the basic education system isn’t enough for most higher paid jobs these days. 🤷🏽‍♀️

    • @STICKY_
      @STICKY_ 5 років тому +13

      @@Charlotte-iq8hk You're not being realistic. Employers want something different but they believe education is extremely significant. You can't be 'different' with education. You either have it, or you don't. At some places you can get a better education. That's why those universities have higher graduate employment rates than unis that aren't so prestigious, like Minerva. I don't know what company you're referring to that would prefer someone who travelled to lots of countries and got an online education than someone who did it at a traditional university. Traditional universities work, they are reliable and produce the best candidates. Smaller companies might be willing to hire Minerva graduates, but bigger companies will want hard working people, like the people who worked hard to get a place in a good university. I'm not saying people at Minerva aren't hard working, they just don't give the right impression.
