Fun Fact: there's actually a movie(hard to find) that tells how the story began, with Jeremy finding the Super Computer. Sissi was actually a Lyoko Warrior in this film, but she wanted to tell the world about the threat of X.A.N.A. so the rest of the gang returned to the past and didn't make friends with her... Kinda dark when you think about it.
I loved how Sissy was written as a pretty morally grey character, manipulative but also fairly caring alot of the time. And the way our main cast are always ready to call her on her bs makes the whole cast feel (ironically) more 3-dimensional.
@@Colby2D “well son I’ll tell you, he was a free spirit, a sharp shooter, takes life by the horns no matter what BS comes his way whenever there’s danger he never worries he literally laughs at the face of danger”……hey you asked lolol
Not just in season 1 but the whole damn series, season 4 especially as it starts out with basically the first 4 episodes of the season with them all getting clutch carried by Odd
When I was a kid, I really wanted Jim to go to Lyoko and join the crew. I even drew a picture of his warrior design. He was like a gorilla man with big gauntlets he could use to absorb lasers and throw back like a dodge ball. Though I did love his last stand with the nail gun.
@@artistanthony1007 Actually, you're in a virtual avatar that's created from your subconscious self-image, Matrix style. The only part of "real you" that's simulated atom-for-atom on Lyoko, is your _brain._
@@Colby2D Oh boy, you're in for some crazy world building and Aelita back-story further down the line. It's always nice when a show starts modestly, becomes popular and THEN the writers manage to build a more solid plot to support the show.
I really like the ending of ep 14 where Sissi and her boys think the gang is celebrating the computer's birthday, and then Sissi starts considering celebrating the birthday of a personal item of her own.
I get that it probably woulda made school issues too easy, but man Jimbo shoulda become a Lyoko Warrior going into Season 2. He doesnt need to go into Lyoko but having him able to help Jeremy and help protect people during Xana attacks woulda been great. He was so much more fun as part of the group than just as a bumbling authority figure.
I would love that Jim is so great, but I do think he is one of the few antagonistic teacher characters I actually like, because he’s actually competent, and listens sometimes
Exactly, total missed opportunity for the warriors to _not_ decide "okay, things aren't over yet, let's at least scan Jim since we're definitely gonna need to RTTP this, and it'd be good to finally have him on our side".
@@PyroBirdChris thank you I appreciate it, I definitely flip flopped throughout, I thought it was a pretty unique name, almost surprised they didn’t change it in the English dub but I’m glad they didn’t
I forget who but I saw a video of someone doing a "death" count of the series. Like everyone actually lost their lives at least a few times and have like zero post trauma over any of them. Guess the "return to the past" also has selective memory deletion
@@Colby2D That's more so something that Happens with Japanese animation. Since this show is a French Animated show they wouldn't need to change his name because the Dub would've probably been developed by the Creators as they could be Bilingual
Honestly with what we learn later in the show about the return to the past it makes a lot of what Xana does make sense and why he has so many out there schemes
Xana: I can undermine my enemies by making a fake version of them and causing arguments through instigating love triangles. Also Xana: So I started a fucking ice age.
@@excalibur2078 You know i never understood how the return to the past did not restart Xana's attack as you are literally rewinding time. Actually why do they have a computer that can rewind time? What's it's power source?
It's rare to see a show that does time travel well, not just keeping the continuity between pasts but the characters behaving like actual time travelers, and it's so much fun.
Seriously I’ve never seen such a long form running shoe use time travel so well. Like it allows monster of the week and yes it resets a lot of character development, but the Lyoko warriors grow and change as well as their relationships with the others even if they don’t remember.
Yeah that’s why when the episode focuses on their drama like between ulrich and Yumi it hits a lot harder, because they can’t change or run by going to the past, hits a lot harder than a moment between ulrich and sissi where we know she’s gonna forget it shortly
@@Colby2D Meh, this is a kids show, it doesn't hit hard nor is it supposed to, it should just be well told so it's easy to understand, and time travel is a writing element that so many shows get wrong because the directors have zero temporal awareness or it's intentionally written badly to tell a certain kind of story. This one is not, the writers simply did their job well, so your brain isn't working overtime to figure out if something was a particular way because it's supposed to be or it's that way because someone doesn't know what they're doing or doesn't care.
It's not actually Time Travel, it's Pseudo Time Travel ala Quantum Manipulation because the Supercomputer sends that light Bubble to spread to world and has recorded data in real-time on the world and we see it has limits with no easy fix or revival of the dead or its damaged Data Boards in Sabotage because it needs existing pristine particles & matter to work with. This is also why it doesnt allow going far & truly there, apart from the machine and go in the future.
I know everyone likes to pick the Lyoko warriors as their favorites, but I just really love Jimbo. He looks out for the school, watches the kids, is always up to help in the most insane situations, and is just a pretty chill guy with whatever nonsense comes his way. Freaks out only a little, but then it's time to get to work, and he absolutely puts in the work. And he's actually helpful! Adults in a lot of animated shows tend to get shoved to the side so the child characters can show off their skills, but Jimbo isn't the bumbling, useless adult of those other shows. He's just all-around amazing.
Jim is so goated, being a not mean bumbling adult while also interfering with the plans is pretty great writing, like yeah maybe kids shouldn’t be doing all this. He was a favorite with the creators too
I saw the xana from xanadu and thought yeah that’s probably the right choice. I like the name code lyoko more than the other original title of the show “Garage Kids”
The only episode I remember is when they just kept looping the same day over and over again and no one knew why and it turned out that Xana somehow took control of the return to the past
Luckily season 2 and onward is way more story based and less “villain of the week” getting into more depths of Lyoko itself where as this season was more character based
Sissy: This is not a comedy, this is a great tragedy! Romeo And Juliet is *actually* a comedy. A lot of Shakespeare's stuff was satire and comedy. Love this joke by the writers.
Yeah, like a big part of it is that it could be considered both, but I love Sissi’s enthusiasm, it’s cool to see she works hard for the play and doesn’t just get the role for being the principals daughter, if anything she’s the only one who cares lol
Well, rather it's a funny joke with the difference between what "tragedy" and "comedy" mean in a theatrical sense vs modernity! Romeo & Juliet is *both* a tragedy in the classical sense - it ends badly - and a comedy in the modern sense - it's meant to be funny.
Romeo and Juliet has a lot of tongue in cheek humor throughout. That being said, I don’t think the joke there is to show Sissi’s ineptitude not reading that the play is actually a comedy, I agree that the play is considered a tragedy first and foremost, but there’s plenty of humor within the story despite the tragedy.
@@MrLefty734Romeo and Juliet is a ‘Comedy’ in the classic theatre sense that the characters grow over the course of the story, as opposed to a tragedy, where they do not
My favorite episode of Season 1 was probably Log Book (episode 4). The tornado was an interesting touch. I also love those scenes when it's Yumi getting to the scanner room by herself and we see a breeze blow in front of her as the door opens (gives me real superhero vibes and shows how Yumi is strong/determined).
Yeah I love the ending to that episode it’s so sweet, and seeing Yumi work the computer is really impressive, like she’s probably the strongest character overall
The spawning in air thing is actually a key to proper game design. If you spawn players on the ground, there is a chance for their hitbox to get glued to the floor or for them to fall through to the wrong side of the floor and get stuck out of map. The solution is to have them spawn in at a non-damaging height above the ground. For games with no fall damage or a spawn immunity timer, it's better to err of the side of more fall distance.
That goddamn gravity episode messed me up. It is the Season 1 episode that stuck with me the most from when I first saw at like 5 years old (I’m 21 now). It has genuinely inspired a lifelong fear of heights and also gravity turning off within me. I genuinely cannot look straight up at the sky without feeling intense anxiety. 🥲 Also - my fave character is Aelita, but a close second is William, who you’ll see in Season 2 if you (hopefully) continue making videos on the rest of the show!
I can’t believe I never even heard of William as a kid, and it was probably best I didn’t see the gravity episode as a kid, I was always scared when I’d go to the mall that it would just randomly collapse
It was a little convoluted how they mess up the play again this way, like I still hardly get why they would even be back there, but they made the parents laugh at them, and that’s all that’s needed to avoid a divorce lol
Odd was alway my favorite. He’s funny, I like his silly hair, and I agree he’s so clutch in Lyoko. Whenever I played the video game I had the most fun playing as him. Also for favorite episodes I really like the “ a great day, the key, lab rat. Obviously there are tons more great episodes and in a 96 episode show can’t really pick just one.
frontier is honestly one of my favorite episodes, it mixes up the formula just right, no activated tower, no monster of the week, no return to the past, just character drama and sweet moments. Its funny how xana could literally take the day off and the kids could screw themselves over and all he does is capitalize on it, revealing even when hes not active he's always aware of whats going on on lyoko. also the idea that 4 middle schoolers messing around with nuclear government technology and not screwing up even once never made sense, so we needed atleast one episode tackling that. The sweet momemnt between jeremy and aelita was also really nice
It took watching these videos to realize it's actually *foreshadowed* with that one freaky pan-away at the end where you see the red light pulsing down the cables after time is turned back...
Ah yes, Ghost Channel, one of the few episodes where Xana is an ACTUAL CHARACTER INSTEAD OF A PLOT DEVICE. I'm pretty sure a _lot_ of kids got scarred by *"NOT LOGICAL! NOT LOGICAAAAL!"*
@@Colby2D He does have a few moments later on (look forward to the S2 episode "Common Interest" 👀), but like 95% of the show, Xana's "actions" are only there because The Show Needs A Plot, not because Xana "wants" to do things. Kind of a shame that that's the route the writers intended to follow (hence the rule of never "depicting" him as an actual singular entity), because _the characters_ absolutely treat Xana as an actual, singular antagonist rather than a mere force of nature.
There's a funny detail in this show. There's Aurebesh letters from Star Wars, in shots with Jeremy's computer in his room, and in those shots where we're looking from the giant robot and xana's monster's POVs. The Aurebesh in the monster's eyes translates to "Try Eret."
Damn it's nice to see someone talking about my fav show. I'm rewatching it and just finished season 2. Everytime I watch this show I can see how mature it was for it's time.
16:10: That's more like reversed gravity than no gravity. No gravity isn't much of a problem to hold on. In that case, they feel heavy. It's reversed gravity (or shifted gravity)
I never saw Code Lyoko myself, but these videos are so engrossing and explain the show so well that I'm now looking forward to the next installment. GG.
Thanks so much, I’m glad you can watch it through these videos, I tried to make them so you can get the whole gist of the show if you haven’t seen it, or as a conversation piece if you have seen, I can assure you the big moments are all covered and the subtle moments I like I always try to throw in
@@nicolasachille4371 Currently, Opera sits at about 200-ish tabs, so I'm a wee bit booked at present, but Colby did such a great job featuring the show that I did think about it every so often after watching his videos (even weeks afterwards), so I'm quite inclined to do as you suggest.
Jim hands down is the best character. I feel like more could have been done with him if only they knew how much some fans liked him as a character. Like how early on he switches between an obstacle, to a set piece, to an ally. I feel that if in the earlier episodes they could've used the knowledge from Returning to help plant the seeds that Jim could become a member of the team from Season 2 on. Like maybe not go to Lyoko with them, but rather be the only adult that they could trust. Like them telling Jim that they're going to Lyoko to stop Xana's random attack and trusting Jim to keep everyone safe. Can't wait for you to do season 2 and get to the surprise Return to the Past feature.
Jim is great, and I think he was a big favorite among the staff too, but I think his position as an ally and an obstacle was great, he wasn’t a jerk or ignorant, so I think a lot of fans respect him, even if he gets in the kids way, which I think is actually kinda tough to pull off! But yeah if he was in the cast it would be fun, but he plays his role well
"Ghost Channel is definitely my favorite episode of the second half of Season 1, possibly of the show as a whole. Such a great concept for techno-horror, the moments between Jeremy and Aelita as leaders of their team as well as the Warriors' best friends, plus XANA actually showing up in as much of the flesh as a computer program can. This clash of humanity versus the limited understanding of machines is a concept I woulda loved to have seen more from this show.
I believe there’s an upcoming episode where she was initially on the team, but they kicked her out because she couldn’t properly keep the secret, but I’d have to see it again to confirm!
You've gotta imagine one of the most frustrating things about this whole situation for Jeremy specifically is that any time he makes progress on materializing Aelita, they go back in time and he has to rewrite all that code from memory
I never even thought of that lol, I do wonder how much he can remember or how long the code is, because I’d imagine a big part of it is the discovery, if he remembers it transcribing it again may not be too bad lol
Somehow I knew it was gonna be Yumi who got devirtualized the most, just because she holds the record for the shortest time spent on Lyoko (devirtualized *19 seconds* after virtualizing).
I always thought Sissy had wasted potential as a character. She's rude sure, but kids are kids. When it came down to business, she helps(or at least does what she believes is best). It would have been cool to see her fight on Lyoko.
I always appreciate how clutch and composed she is when stuff went down in the real world, she was pretty fearless, and cared for others when there was actual danger. And not sure how much you know but I believe there’s a part upcoming about how sissi was initially let in on the plans, but kicked out because she can’t be trusted, and she doesn’t remember
I remember my friends and I when we were in covid we made a whole stat sheet of kills "deaths" and devirtualizations statistics becaue we were curious who was the most and least useful. I think i still have the thing. So it would be interesting to compare numbers we got to the results at the end of this retrospective.
That would be cool! I wouldn’t be surprised if I was one or two off, but I would really need to scrub through if I wanted to see enemies killed and stuff, if you ever happen to find it, I’d be curious to see, either here or on Twitter/Instagram
@Colby2D ended up finding it. We only went through season 2 on the stats based off stuff but it's still useful. I don't have social media outside youtube but here is a link. in my Code Lyoko discord, the others did the similar thing, but mostly with near-death experience, including background characters. I have the Google Sheet link if you're interested tho!
14:20 yeah and when the show made a big deal that time travel will not help bring someone back from the dead.. Yeah those 3 people and maybe many other are just flat out gone. Man lol
Btw Apparently Jeremy would look a lot like an Elf Robin hood in lyoko with a tiny dagger. Based on Aelitas childhood plushie a bit, details from the books iirc
I'm 30 years old now. I find myself as an adult going back and watching these old cartoons that I used to watch. It's so much different when I watch them in order as an adult. Good job on these videos
Thanks very much, yeah I definitely wanted to try to provide a perspective that kinda recaps these while also giving my opinion now on them versus how I felt then. Thanks for checking this out
in defense of Ailita saying "i'm almost at the third tower" when before leaving the second tower.. she's a pro mlg gamer girl.. i too say "i'm almost at the third tower" when i literally just left the first one in Halo 3's 'The Covenant' (for context: the second one is skipped for cutscene reasons)
Lol trueee, I really love halo 3, that was like the first multiplayer online game I played it changed my life. Also the little crawling enemies in lyoko look like the flood to me
I watched your other code lyoko video and ot scratched the nostalgic parts of my brain so I remixed it haha posting later if youre interested in edm. Thanks for these videos! Hoping you do Zatch bell 😁
I’m interested to see, I love that xanas flaw here was just not really understanding how the world works or that people would act out of character for their friends, definitely emphasizes the strength of humanity / friendship aspect
I enjoy the nostalgic recaps of the series. I completely forgot most of the X.A.N.A. attacks, but the reverse gravity trauma is crazy, especially since you see students immediately get sent upwards like 1000s of feet before they return to the past. The fortitude of the main cast is abnormal with all they go through honestly. I really enjoy the later episodes where they discover the special region. The deeper exploration into the biomes is something i really enjoyed. Also the introduction of William and overall story progression/character development that happens later on felt good
Yeah, come season 2, and things will start getting a lot more coherent.... Also, XANA gets an actual goal to work towards and dose a LOT of winning. And Alita dose in fact get significantly stronger... The power of flight is just one example of how.
@@Colby2D I think that power was more refered to as a creation power (hence angelic singing as she uses it)... She has a minor angelic theme to her that gets more pronounced later on.
It's actually not a Pilot, Garage Kids was a proof of concept and it was supposed to have multiple episodes but got scrapped to pour ideas into Code Lyoko.
It's crazy cause if I remember correctly when Jimbo was protecting those girls they panned back to lyoko after the red zoom in them about a minute later pan back to him falling hands to the floor as in Xana headshotted Jim
Yeah I think they were just about to shoot him in the face right before they went back to the past. My thought was “would that have killed him for real?”
For all the show's faults, Xana's random hair-brained schemes make a weird amount of sense. Especially cases like "oh swarms of rats didn't work, now hornets". The process is actually not too far off from what a computer would actually do. The concept of the "Turing Test" is actually based around this, the fact that a computer would just kind of go down the list of possible solutions to a problem with every minute variation accounted for until it's solved. Unlike a true intelligence, which would see a square hole and just pick up the cube.
What got me about the gravity episode is we see people floating to the either Like we know that you can't bring people back who die after a return to the past So how many people died when they floated to the vacuum of space
I definitely had nightmares about what if gravity just reversed. Just disappearing wouldn’t cut it when it comes to nightmare fuel because you can hover around and control where you move in slow time. Reverse gravity is what we see in the episode where they fall to their doom into the sky. Freaky shit and there’s nowhere safe! People tend to forget the only safe place would be the trees while buildings would fall from their foundations into the sky as well…
I'm really excited to hear you talk about William, he's stuck with me just by how much I haven't seen his character trope done so well before (not specifying to avoid spoiling for anyone who doesn't know/remember)
Honestly Code Lyoko is quite the roller coaster of an adventure especially in later seasons as the gang get new gear, vehicles to travel with and facing new monsters.
The two standout episodes of season 1 to me were the episode with the killer music and episode 24, seeing the entire town succumb to the music laying motionless strewn throughout the streets with their faces frozen in whatever expression they fainted with was horrifying and let’s not forget Odd’s heart stopped, like he actually DIED, the return to the past may have been triggered before the life fully left his body but he was still clinically dead for a second there. And ghost channel is important because it’s the first time XANA is brought into focus as a character and an antagonist and arguably the closest our heroes ever come to meeting it face to face. I’m not sure if you’re going to do the same styles of videos for them but I hope you’ll check out the other seasons as well, they handle the evolution of the stakes and characters very well.
I really like the Episode where Xana pretends to be Jeremy. Jeremy is the man behind the computer and doesen't fight for his life as often as the others do but he's just as willing to throw himself in danger for his friends. Also i find the messaging of this show quite interesting. Most people meme on how the Lyoko warriors are risking every human on earth for one girl except... it kinda relevant the message of the show. Aelita, even when they think she is an ai, is a person and therefore inherently valuable and worth saving. These kids know the risk they took and that's why they fight so hard despite knocking on deaths door because of whatever Xana has in store for them that episode. Aelita has low self esteem and doesen't think she's worth it at the beggining but slowly starts to value herself more as the show goes on. It says that every person is inherently valuable and worth fighting for even if they are not contributing much to humanity. think it's very sweet.
Those are really good points, and I really love the jeremy impersonator episode too, part because it shows XANA’s inner workings a little more, while also showing how much the group trusts and values jeremy to risk his life for everyone even though he’s scared
This show made my childhood, I got to say my utmost favourite episode (not just of this season) is the one where Jim fights off the Lyoko monsters in the real world. It was one of the first episodes I saw as a kid because the show came on right after pokemon and I adored it.
Oh yeah I remember that time slot when it was on Miguzi (at least here in the US) and I love that episode, Jim is so funny and actually useful, and even when he interferes with the lyoko plans you know he’s coming from a place of competency
@@Colby2D me either but some friend were into music so I was the one with a pc back then soooo that’s how I killed that computer and got in a lot of trouble, the internet was new so a lot of us didn’t know what was happening and code lyoko made it look easy to hack and enter the computers
Just wait until you see what's to come in season 2. And I love the whole cast, but especially Aelita and Yumi. And in season 1, standout episodes to me are Image Problem, Zero Gravity Zone, Ghost Channel, Code: Earth, and False Start.

@@Colby2D Personally I'd like a video where you talk about season 2 and then one where you talk about the final season, but also you gotta do what feels righ. I'm assuming these bad boys take a while to make, but I think you should do whatever your heart is into and I'll watch
Thank you! I’m hoping to continue it, might try to cover a season every month and to be able to fully watch and digest it while balancing other series too
As I shared in the first video, the episode "Killer Music" is what cemented me in being a fan of the show because the concept was one of the most terrifying young me had ever seen. Especially since I was one of those kids who was using Limewire, Xana's plan was quite clever and would've totally been a horrible thing to happen in real life back in the early 2000s. I mean can you imagine it just infecting any song with it where instead of hearing Bill Clinton's "I did not have s3xual relations with that woman" prank, it's Xana's song instead? Creepy LOL And again, I was just so surprised that the show went that far and I'm sure Odd's coma face was burned into all of our memories lol. Also yes, I was another one of those 2000s kids who was terrified of Zero Gravity Zone. Very scary concept for sure and again, super surprised they went there but grateful all the same because the show was not afraid to show that there were high stakes involved and Xana really was "that" villain haha. Ghost channel though, that's probably one of my most favorite episodes of the season, I just liked the mystery & psychological horror aspect of it all even though it wasn't that complex. It was just nice to see that Jeremy would go that far to save his friends as well as showing that Xana is still just a computer program that can make mistakes in how it processes their world. I also appreciate how they tried to involve real world problems with their families from Ulrich's father to Yumi's parents who as you get to know them a bit more, you feel like they only got together out of convenience or expectation (there's a certain episode in season 2 I'm referencing to though I won't spoil it lol) Anyway nice review!
Love your take on these, ghost channel and zero gravity are probably my top 2 episodes at least so far, but the music episode is great too. I’m so thankful I was not really into music at that age because I know I would’ve bricked the computer, more than I did playing stuff like addictinggames
@@Colby2D Oh no problem! It's fun to reminiscence on this cartoon because it was a such a pivotal one I'm sure for a lot of us. And oh for sure, I contracted so much malware from Limewire during that time, it was insane and I don't really miss that lol.

When I was a kid, I really wanted Jim to go to Lyoko and join the crew. I even drew a picture of his warrior design. He was like a gorilla man with big gauntlets he could use to absorb lasers and throw back like a dodge ball.
Though I did love his last stand with the nail gun.
Jim is not fit for the battles in Lyoko, you still have to be in tip top physical shape because you have your genetic code with you & feel everything.
@@artistanthony1007 Kid me didn't care! I wanted a 3D gorilla man, hucking laser orbs at robots. Wouldn't you?!
That is such a sick idea I love the idea of a brawler / grappler joining the crew!
That dodgeball idea is pretty awesome ngl
@@artistanthony1007 Actually, you're in a virtual avatar that's created from your subconscious self-image, Matrix style. The only part of "real you" that's simulated atom-for-atom on Lyoko, is your _brain._
Season 2 is when the show starts getting a cohesive progressive plot.
Yeah I’m looking forward to seeing the more story based parts
@@Colby2D Oh boy, you're in for some crazy world building and Aelita back-story further down the line.
It's always nice when a show starts modestly, becomes popular and THEN the writers manage to build a more solid plot to support the show.
It really takes off in season two
Is that when they introduce Sector 5?
Oh man, that's great! It's the one thing I felt was really missing from this first season, besides a bit more permanence to the consequences.
I really like the ending of ep 14 where Sissi and her boys think the gang is celebrating the computer's birthday, and then Sissi starts considering celebrating the birthday of a personal item of her own.
She’s like “I wonder if Nicholas and Hervé have birthdays?”
I think at some point they intended for Jim to be a Lyoko warrior, think he even had his own Lyoko Warrior design at some point but was scrapped.
if Odd was a Counter Strike player he'd 1V5 in pro matches half the rounds cause he's just built like that
He definitely would dive with the famas half the time too, but kinda like a boss
@@Colby2D nah, i see him doing it with a Mac 10

@@PyroBirdChris thank you I appreciate it, I definitely flip flopped throughout, I thought it was a pretty unique name, almost surprised they didn’t change it in the English dub but I’m glad they didn’t
I forget who but I saw a video of someone doing a "death" count of the series. Like everyone actually lost their lives at least a few times and have like zero post trauma over any of them. Guess the "return to the past" also has selective memory deletion
@@Colby2D
That's more so something that Happens with Japanese animation.
Since this show is a French Animated show they wouldn't need to change his name because the Dub would've probably been developed by the Creators as they could be Bilingual
Season two is when the show really got interesting for me. Aleita's existence and her father's disappearance is just "chef's kiss".
It all sounds really cool, I have little idea of most of it so far
4:26 I made a joke on about this on Twitter that xana just uses a dartboard to decide his plans given how crazy and random they can get.
Sometimes they have funny progression, like the rats to the hornets, and sometimes it goes from nuclear bomb to do nothing and make them go crazy lol
AI generated plans to takeover the world
@@excalibur2078 You know i never understood how the return to the past did not restart Xana's attack as you are literally rewinding time.
He was a favorite with the creators too
Fun Fact: during development the series was originally titled "Xanadu"
With X.A.N.A being a Leftover from that time of creating the series.
It's episode 30 "A Great Day". One of my favourite episodes of the series
Yeah it’s my list too. It’s really good
yeah i remember that episode
I always got the sense that Odd, who turns into a catboy, really likes going to the virtual world 😅
He’s the lyoko equivalent of a gym class hero
Mmmm representation! Go Odd!
Luckily season 2 and onward is way more story based and less “villain of the week” getting into more depths of Lyoko itself where as this season was more character based
That’s what it seems like! I was really happy with how this half flowed
@@Colby2D I suggest watching the next season whether on your own time or for a video series it’s just worth it to watch it in general
OOOOO I ALMOST FORGOT ABOUT THAT, the next episode is gonna be hype ash
Sissy: This is not a comedy, this is a great tragedy!
Romeo And Juliet is *actually* a comedy. A lot of Shakespeare's stuff was satire and comedy. Love this joke by the writers.
Yeah, like a big part of it is that it could be considered both, but I love Sissi’s enthusiasm, it’s cool to see she works hard for the play and doesn’t just get the role for being the principals daughter, if anything she’s the only one who cares lol
No it isn’t? It’s not a comedy at all. Doesn’t end with a wedding but instead with the main characters committing suicide.
That’s a really cool point I had never thought of that before some comments have pointed out clipping into the ground
Also - my fave character is Aelita, but a close second is William, who you’ll see in Season 2 if you (hopefully) continue making videos on the rest of the show!
I can’t believe I never even heard of William as a kid, and it was probably best I didn’t see the gravity episode as a kid, I was always scared when I’d go to the mall that it would just randomly collapse
3:09 Therefore, the Lyoko team do a version of The Play that Goes Wrong before The Play That Goes Wrong.
It was a little convoluted how they mess up the play again this way, like I still hardly get why they would even be back there, but they made the parents laugh at them, and that’s all that’s needed to avoid a divorce lol
Funly enought. Looking back to the time i saw this as a kid, i remenber that i noticed that Yumi was always the first one to die in most of the series
Yeah I feel like she’s often tasked with sticking to aelita as a bodyguard, so it’s not always her fault
@@Colby2D that's also because since she is the oldest and apparently the strongest in the group. Xana normally goes for her first.
You can't beat a world without danger. Planet net is a close second
Agree but "School Is Out" is so the vibe
@Mary-wz6zx you know what!? 😡
Your not wrong! 🤣😃👍
I’ve heard many things about a great day, looking forward to seeing it soon!
frontier is honestly one of my favorite episodes, it mixes up the formula just right, no activated tower, no monster of the week, no return to the past, just character drama and sweet moments.
I look forward to when you learn about the reveal about the back to the future mechanic and how the writers up the ante in the next seasons.
I’m looking forward to it too because whenever people mention it I’m like “I must have missed it I don’t think it’s explained yet”
It took watching these videos to realize it's actually *foreshadowed* with that one freaky pan-away at the end where you see the red light pulsing down the cables after time is turned back...
@@Colby2DI’m looking forward to it too. Your commentary on the summary is better than just watching it
Also the equation joke is so funny. The definitely have a lot of good running jokes in this show.
This show is so slept on
Ah yes, Ghost Channel, one of the few episodes where Xana is an ACTUAL CHARACTER INSTEAD OF A PLOT DEVICE. I'm pretty sure a _lot_ of kids got scarred by *"NOT LOGICAL! NOT LOGICAAAAL!"*
That and when he shouts at Jeremy “YOU WILL DIE” lol
@@Colby2D He does have a few moments later on (look forward to the S2 episode "Common Interest" 👀), but like 95% of the show, Xana's "actions" are only there because The Show Needs A Plot, not because Xana "wants" to do things. Kind of a shame that that's the route the writers intended to follow (hence the rule of never "depicting" him as an actual singular entity), because _the characters_ absolutely treat Xana as an actual, singular antagonist rather than a mere force of nature.
Episode 24 is them telling odd not to steal their kills because he's OP. They are trying to grind xp
The only thing holding Odd back is the fact he has limited ammo and has to have Jeremy refill it for him. Otherwise he’s definitely OP.
Lol I would love if they had level ups or forms they had kinda like digimon. Odd is definitely a toxic jungler and steals xp
Odd died 9 times, as a cat-boy
how...fitting
Lol I never thought of that!
There's a funny detail in this show. There's Aurebesh letters from Star Wars, in shots with Jeremy's computer in his room, and in those shots where we're looking from the giant robot and xana's monster's POVs. The Aurebesh in the monster's eyes translates to "Try Eret."
“With a down payment” that shit goes hard 10:34
That was such a power move, because he knows she likes him a lot. So, he just used it to his advantage to help Jeremy.
Damn it's nice to see someone talking about my fav show. I'm rewatching it and just finished season 2. Everytime I watch this show I can see how mature it was for it's time.
Can't wait for part 3
16:10: That's more like reversed gravity than no gravity. No gravity isn't much of a problem to hold on. In that case, they feel heavy. It's reversed gravity (or shifted gravity)
I never saw Code Lyoko myself, but these videos are so engrossing and explain the show so well that I'm now looking forward to the next installment. GG.
Thanks so much, I’m glad you can watch it through these videos, I tried to make them so you can get the whole gist of the show if you haven’t seen it, or as a conversation piece if you have seen, I can assure you the big moments are all covered and the subtle moments I like I always try to throw in
@DarkVeghetta I hope this encourages to watch the show especially when you can get every episode on youtube
Definitely has all the best qualities of code lyoko all in one episode
I’m kind of sad that Sissy never got to be part of Team Lyoko.
I’ve heard some interesting things about the prequel movie that kinda relate to that, I’m looking forward to getting there
Didnt say it but I actually found it wild you're a fan of this show.
I love how Sissi’s crew, while antagonists, end up helping the Lyoko Gang a lot, showing the potential for a larger team of the story is done right.
Btw Apparently Jeremy would look a lot like an Elf Robin hood in lyoko with a tiny dagger. Based on Aelitas childhood plushie a bit, details from the books iirc
I feel like that would make a lot of sense for him, like it’s so weird, but I can see it

in defense of Ailita saying "i'm almost at the third tower" when before leaving the second tower.. she's a pro mlg gamer girl.. i too say "i'm almost at the third tower" when i literally just left the first one in Halo 3's 'The Covenant' (for context: the second one is skipped for cutscene reasons)
Lol trueee, I really love halo 3, that was like the first multiplayer online game I played it changed my life. Also the little crawling enemies in lyoko look like the flood to me
For episode 24 i think Jeremy being able to outrun the zombie jim and such is a subtle proof that the place they are in is virtual.
That’s a genius and subtle way to show it, that or Jeremy is running on pure adrenaline and probably pulled every muscle in his body lol

And XANA gets even more smart and scary as well as show he's not mindless about things he does & temporary goodness few times.

@@Colby2D thanks for all the work you do
Yeah, come season 2, and things will start getting a lot more coherent.... Also, XANA gets an actual goal to work towards and dose a LOT of winning.
And Alita dose in fact get significantly stronger... The power of flight is just one example of how.
I like in the second half she gets the earth bending powers, that seems pretty cool!
@@Colby2D I think that power was more refered to as a creation power (hence angelic singing as she uses it)... She has a minor angelic theme to her that gets more pronounced later on.
If you're going to do Season 2, you should cover the pilot short "Garage Kids" first!
Yeah it would probably be cool to mention sometime, there’s some interesting changes between that and the show
It's actually not a Pilot, Garage Kids was a proof of concept and it was supposed to have multiple episodes but got scrapped to pour ideas into Code Lyoko.
With Jeremy going into the digital world I heard they had the concept of him looking like Peter Pan
Interesting, I could see that actually
Yeah I really love the aspect of XANA’s character, like trying to impersonate Jeremy and failing terribly
Part one was randomly reccomended to me. Please make a part two and dint be aftmraid to do some long form content! Excited for season 2.
What got me about the gravity episode is we see people floating to the either
Like we know that you can't bring people back who die after a return to the past
So how many people died when they floated to the vacuum of space
I guess they technically didn’t die yet, as they were just in the process of flying away, assuming that wouldn’t kill people already on the spot lol
People tend to forget the only safe place would be the trees while buildings would fall from their foundations into the sky as well…
I hope you will go over all episodes. This is really fun to watch 😊
Code Lyoko was known for reusing footage as assets.
Umi got dematerialized so often her banging her fist on the chamber was just reused.
Yeah those are great episodes, I don’t think I give the music episode enough credit for how dark it is with the heartbeat monitor and stuff
Perfect timing! I literally just saw part one this morning 😂
Omg that is awesome, thank you for watching😄
This show made my childhood, I got to say my utmost favourite episode (not just of this season) is the one where Jim fights off the Lyoko monsters in the real world. It was one of the first episodes I saw as a kid because the show came on right after pokemon and I adored it.
Oh yeah I remember that time slot when it was on Miguzi (at least here in the US) and I love that episode, Jim is so funny and actually useful, and even when he interferes with the lyoko plans you know he’s coming from a place of competency
This show was one of my favorites growing up. The theme song went HARD. Seasons, 2, 3 and 4 really made it go hard.
8:06 a flush of flashbacks killing the family computer came to me …. Man …. 😂
I’m very thankful I was not into music back then because I definitely would have done this
@@Colby2D me either but some friend were into music so I was the one with a pc back then soooo that’s how I killed that computer and got in a lot of trouble, the internet was new so a lot of us didn’t know what was happening and code lyoko made it look easy to hack and enter the computers
I was *obsessed* with this show as a kid. It was *so good.*
the show gets so good in later seasons i hope u make more parts to this :)
Yay!! Part 2!! Heck yeah. It's really nice looking back at this show- I haven't seen it beginning to end since its original run.
I didn’t really watch much of the original run so this has been a fun ride for me. Thanks for watching😄
13:18 early in the show, Odd mentions running out of ammo a couple times, but I don't remember hearing it come up again after Episode 12 or so
Yeah it seems a little bit like it was for the episode plot but it’s always cool to see
Just wait until you see what's to come in season 2.
And I love the whole cast, but especially Aelita and Yumi. And in season 1, standout episodes to me are Image Problem, Zero Gravity Zone, Ghost Channel, Code: Earth, and False Start.
All great episodes! And yeah I really like yumi’s character she’s very unique, very serious, you don’t see that a lot
Ever since I was 14 I can never understand why teens my age at the time do that: Hate someone just because their crush likes them instead of him. It is such a stupid mindset to have. Can we just respect people’s interests please?
Envy and jealousy😬
@@sirbarksalot9139 I know what it is called and I don’t find it to be a good excuse to hate those who have or get something you don’t. I said it back when I was 14 and I will say it again yrs later: Teenagers make a big goddamn deal out of nothing.
I had a crush on this girl; hugesssstttt crush I’ve ever had and she seemed more interested in my brother. I wasn’t hateful towards my brother for that. It is common sense that some likes you and some don’t. It is why I can’t stand Ulrich and I hate how Herb gets all pissy when Sissi likes Theo and not him when I watched this show again as a teenager.
@@francostevo9939 I agree with you. Some people (like you) are emotionally intelligent. And it's sad that it keeps happening in the adulthood.
😂 See that's maturity. It's not developed properly as a Teen, and even some adults have no idea what it feels like.
@@TheFatalcrest what are you saying? That adults comprehend such a thing but teens don’t? I just said back when I was 14, I hate teens who do that. When I was 14, I never did that. It is just a common sense thing to comprehend; you don’t need to have a fully developed brain to comprehend that hating someone just because your crush likes them and not you is so stupid.
7:28 don't know if someone mentioned it so ill say it here, most likely reason is because Jeremy points in the coordinates slightly above ground level so they can virtulize without worrying about anybody parts clipping into the environment.
Imagine if Jeremy was off by an inch and the bottom of their foot gets fused with the ground
I thought that was really interesting I never even thought these characters could clip lol
Oh joy! I was looking forward to this. Didnt expect it so soon
Thanks! I was a bit worried i took a long time with this, I try to upload weekly, but have been a bit under the weather as of late, so uploads should hopefully still be pretty quick!
@@Colby2D thanks for that update! And hope you have been feeling better!
8:20 I will say
Odd does canonically die here cuz he flatlines just as they return to the past. But it also gets reversed so uh yeah.
I was wondering if you would be considered dead the second you flatline, or if you’re still technically alive for like 20 seconds or something lol
I think it’s something of the latter so he may have still been alive. But I just find it more wild cuz he technically had the first ‘death’ before a return to the past.
Please make more code lyoko content! I need the rest of the story summarized by you
Thank you, I definitely want to at least cover season 2, because it really picks up!
@@Colby2D Code lyoko was my childhood man, when I was in primary school I was writing fanfictions about code lyoko and showing them to my classmates before even knowing what a "fanfiction" even was
You reminded me this show existed! Can't wait for you to cover season 2, consider me subscribed :)
Thanks so much, definitely working on a part 2, not sure if it’ll be in august or September, but should be sooner than later
@Colby2D take your time, from one creator to another. These things take time, lol
7:25
My guess would be to prevent them from spawning inside something leading to an EXTREMELY painful demise.
Not necessarily inside _terrain,_ as there seems to only be specific locations Jeremie can send them to where there's nothing tall nearby. But definitely to stop them from _telefragging an existing entity_ upon virtualization...
Episode 26 is why I actually love the Krankelats as my favorite monsters
great video! really, im glad to see this kind of content. I loved that show when i was a little girl and i rewatched it when i was a teen. This video and the last one have brought me great nostalgia and comfort, also brought me to your channel, i really like your content!
Thank you! I’m happy to hear that, I try to make kinda comfy videos that are half comfort and half analysis
You got a new sub thanks to this series, hope it continues
Thanks very much, I was planning on either talking about season 2 or the final season, do you have a preference of what comes next?
@@Colby2D Personally I'd like a video where you talk about season 2 and then one where you talk about the final season, but also you gotta do what feels righ. If you go the route of straight to the final season, then a quick synopsis of season 2 would be nice as the intro. I'm assuming these bad boys take a while to make, but I think you should do whatever your heart is into and I'll watch
I've been really looking forward to this video. Thanks for what you do.
Thanks for watching, I’m happy to hear that🙂
That scene/meme with the bots in the car is probably a reference to the "What is Love" skit from SSL, those memes are pretty popular.
Loved it, i hope it keeps coming for at least the rest of the animated seasons!
Thank you! I’m hoping to continue it, might try to cover a season every month and to be able to fully watch and digest it while balancing other series too
@@Colby2D Sounds like a good plan!
Love the video series, keep on making them, they're very in depth and worth it
As I shared in the first video, the episode "Killer Music" is what cemented me in being a fan of the show because the concept was one of the most terrifying young me had ever seen.
I also appreciate how they tried to involve real world problems with their families from Ulrich's father to Yumi's parents who as you get to know them a bit more, you feel like they only got together out of convenience or expectation (there's a certain episode in season 2 I'm referencing to though I won't spoil it lol)
Anyway nice review!
Love this show and really loved your take! Thank you sharing and I’d love to see you do the rest of the series!!! ❤❤🎉🎉❤❤
Thanks very much, definitely plan to do more🙂
