    My favourite example of “socialism has never worked!” is Cuba. They have survived 60+ years of endless assault from the most powerful capitalist country in history and are still standing. If it was reversed, if Cuba was Capitalist and USA socialist, it would not have survived a year even without the endless sabotage. Cuba’s socialism is a powerful example of success.

      @@SBb374 Mr.Wolff can answer that. There are, I think, 3 different definitions of socialism he can describe for you. The USA is both. Capitalist and socialist. But, capitalism has gotten out of control. And I believe, they are trying to get rid of our socialism of what we do have by having private business taking them over too. Such as education, police, firemen, SS, Medicare, Medicaid, etc.

      Both of these countries are capitalist I'm afraid, despite some good policies like LGBT and women's rights - no country can have that high of a prison population and at the same time be one that is socially controlled by the masses.
      Cuba's private sector percentage has also been rapidly growing over time and has a lower worker cooperative percentage than the openly capitalist European countries (both of those issues also apply to other authoritarian countries)

      Canada is a so-called 'socialist' country, as are most of the Western European countries. We're all doing fine, thanks. Voting Trump in to make things 'better' is madness! How long will it take for his voters to figure that out I wonder... what's it going to take? 🤔

      And all that FDR did, the economy kept getting worse and unemployment didn't change. The measures under taken made people feel better but accomplished nothing. FDR only stopped the depression when WW2 was started. Be careful what you want and vote for. Taxing the rich despite how good it feels does not make the economies grow. The government could size all the billionaires monet and it wouldn't run the government a month.

      @@wsollers1 You are incorrect. Unemployment during the great depression peaked in 1933 at 25% when the New Deal started. It never reached that high again. By the time the US entered WWII in late 1941, the unemployment rate was below 5%.

    The persistence of socialism reflects a growing dissatisfaction with systems that prioritize profits over people. As inequality deepens and essential services like healthcare, education, and housing become increasingly inaccessible, socialism continues to resonate as an alternative. It challenges the unchecked power of elites and advocates for economic systems rooted in fairness, equity, and collective well-being. While critics dismiss it, its endurance worldwide highlights a demand for economic justice, workers' rights, and policies that prioritize human dignity over corporate greed. The conversation around socialism is not about ideology alone it's about addressing real struggles and creating a more just and sustainable future.

    • @danielmiller4279
      @danielmiller4279 Місяць тому +8

      Fixed capital, like AI, eventually nets the capitalist no increase in the rate of profit. Human labor is the only way they can get more bang for less. This is a way of saying there will always be a need for wage labor so long as capitalists desire profits.

    • @SomeCajunDude

      It's just a question of who is in control and where the profits go.

    • @nthperson
      @nthperson Місяць тому +5

      3 out of 4 jobs today are in the service sector. If we can get our legislators to pass regular increases in the minimum wage to keep up with a rising cost of living that would help protect the standard of well-being for many working people. The second change is the need for a universal basic income paid for by the progressive taxation of high incomes derived from rent-seeking privileges under law.

So much better than what I have experienced in America. I love America but the people have no idea about where they are in the world with a good life. Just a little bit over 100 years ago one man started the movement based on this idea, and around 1989 the USA successfully eradicated about 80% of the ideology, only 1 place remaining where is practiced: China, the rest of the countries they call themself Socialist are not real socialists. I did grew up in socialism, free education, free healthcare, no homelessness, NO DRUGS on the streets, everybody was working, and actually it worked so well, women could stay home and man provided to family. In socialism you could own your own business you where able to run a construction business, or car repair service, private doctors office, just to name a few. Back then an average person picked up 2-3000 currency a month, 1 loaf of bread 2kg was 1.5-1.7 currency, 1 gal (3.75l) of gasoline was around 4-5 currency, electrical bill was 80-120 currency, rent (you could rent an apartment from the government from 40 -280 currency depending on square footage (big family big apartment). I would think it was min 70% of the families owned their own houses with farm land in the outskirts of the cities and villages. I remember in our garden we grapes lots of grapes, apple trees, Cherry tree trees black and sweet, apricot trees, and plum trees we had pepper, tomatoes, etc, we still had to purchase more from local farmers market. Only city dwellers had to pay rent however lots apartments where privately owned in the major cities as well. No personal income tax except if you where running your own business because you made more money and you did not get paid from the government you had to pay tax. majority of the ppl in capitalist countries do not know what is the real socialism, you where lied to from day one by your government your schoolbooks where written to hate socialism. You been raised to hate and reject the ideology.
    for an instance Romania was a fake socialist look up Nicolae Ceaușescu regime he licked the ass of the west and CCCP at the same time and he took everything from his ppl. look where ended up. WHAT YOU NEED TO UNDERSTAND is the US killed all those countries part by propaganda part by economic force because the US government is terrified from a successful Socialist country for example today's China. In a real socialism there is no 1 single leader there is a collective leaders ship. "with one speaker of the house"

    29:57 this exact sentiment is explained in Stephen Skrowneks book Presidential Leadership in Political Time. According to the book, in my interpretation, Trump should be the end of the conservative political cycle this country has been under since Reagan. The last president that lead us out of conservative cycle was FDR. But our democracy must survive first.

    Growth is the measure of economic success. But where the environment is concerned growth is killing the earth. So what does that do for the value of growth? Or do we just continue to use growth as a criteria for economic health and just ignore the health of the planet? I always notice that exclusion and dont want to ignore it. Also, perhaps the US rules protecting the environment are affecting the ecomonic growth curve. China does not have as many protectins given rhe fact that they have killed and polluted two great rivers. But perhaps they have remedied this now.

    There is another area of socialism that is a basis of the convers capitalism. Within families of affection and growth lies a community hopefully of similar visions. Education and medicine for not only my children but also for all in the community.
    Building, roads, harvesting, snow removal, marriage, postal, burials, festivals all had meaning. Bums, alcoholism and criminals did exist in small percentage.
    At 75 a socialist I'm not wealthy but healthy, sexually active, theoretical smart, probably dumb, undecided, undeclared, genetically modified from unknown source and untraceable.

    the reason why socialism persists is very simple. it predates capitalism. it is how human societies managed shared resources since the beginning of the existence of the concept of society. it’s not until a society grows into a nation large enough to partition into parts and hierarchies that new ideas for the uneven accumulation of resources would even be plausible.
    modern socialism is merely attempts to preserve the effect of the original societal motivation to govern shared resources and prosperity so that the society continues to persist rather than dissolve, but in the context of a very large society.
    10:54 maybe the reason why there are many versions of socialism but essentially only one of capitalism, because there are many societies with their own culture and history of how resource sharing should look like for them, given that pooled resources and its management is the original logic in society. whereas capitalism progresses logically to imperialism, and there’s really only one economic logic for hegemony. by its nature of a small group wanting to control all resources everywhere, it will reduce to one single method of extraction and accumulation that overwhelms all else.

    The check from social security is not a pension check. It is the pay-it-ahead scheme that those who follow, "contribute" to the fund and those who worked and are now eligible (which can change at the whim of the government), can receive a check from those funds that TAXPAYERS fund. As it is, the government has just about destroyed that as well. "Taxed corporations and the rich" yes that was the slogan, "tax the rich" they yelled. And how much do lower and middle class persons pay into the taxes of the "rich." Are they rich? yeah right. This was a great display of intellectual attempts to make something out of nothing that had only the affect of "next to nothing."

    The idea of collectivism sounds great but the problem always comes down to the required power and force of a group entrusted to maintain society. This centralized power attracts the worst of beings and corrupts the well intentioned.
