- The 1999 Tour de France was a multiple stage bicycle race held from 3 to 25 July, and the 86th edition of the Tour de France. It has no overall winner-although American cyclist Lance Armstrong originally won the event, the United States Anti-Doping Agency announced in August 2012 that they had disqualified Armstrong from all his results since 1998, including his seven consecutive Tour de France wins from 1999 to 2005 (which were, originally, the most wins in the event's history); the Union Cycliste Internationale confirmed the result. There were no French stage winners for the first time since the 1926 Tour de France. Additionally, Mario Cipollini won 4 stages in a row, setting the post-World War II record for consecutive stage wins (breaking the record of three, set by Gino Bartali in 1948.)

What was the result of Lance Armstrong's return to racing? Many thousands getting checked out for cancer and catching it early and glad to be alive this day.
Yeah, whether you agree or not with him using performance enhancers and doping, there is no doubt that he raised more money than most could ever hope to for cancer research. It kills me that people will basically crucify the guy for “cheating” also known as doing the exact same thing as every other person in the race, but just act like Livestrong never existed. Focus on the good a person does, not what their failures are.

the real tragedy with lance is that no tour will ever be as entertaining without him.
ecarter202 Lance's victories were almost always boring. Aside from 2003 the outcome was a foregone conclusion.

Both guys boring, bought the best riders to form a team which escorted them to the last climb. But Froome at least rode one riskful and exciting attack at the Giro this year, Lance none in his whole career. None of them is comparable to Contador, who was the most entertaining and charismatic character.
No doubt all three dominators were on drugs, but Contador was the coolest.
There was nothing exciting about him.
I guess you never saw the 1989 Tour, when Greg Lemond took the lead and won the race on the last day at the finish in Paris. Never in his life did Lance have as an exciting finish.

Doping was and is still the preserve of European sport. The overwhelming majority of the methods were developed in Europe.

Not the case. All of the American pro cyclists have stated they never used PEDs until they went to Europe. But it depends on the sport: certainly professional sports such as baseball and football and anaerobic track and field sports were rife with doping. But Russia is the country in which doping was most prevalent since it was state sponsored during the Soviet era and recently before Sochi. Most people associate PEDs with strength oriented sports (especially in the US) and not aerobic sports and it really was the European cycling that pioneered the use of PEDs for aerobic sports. And cycling especially has a long history of using these drugs; it was thought by many that the sport was so difficult that it was necessary. They really didn’t think of it as cheating; they thought of it as medically necessary just to be able to do it. Back when I was racing mountain bike in Alaska (during the 90s) I didn’t even know that steroids could help in a sport like cycling; I thought of it as something that only helped with developing strength and muscle mass so I never even considered that it might be helpful for an aerobic sport.
One of the reasons I like alpine skiing is that PEDs don’t help and most athletes don’t bother using them; and even if someone did, it wouldn’t make a difference. Alpine skiing is all about technique and psychology. Of course conditioning is important and helpful, but it’s not what determines who wins.
if I almost died, then given another chance to compete I would have cheated my a$$ off! I mean since it was rampant through the peleton, I mean. but I would have been nice to others, not a complete and utter tool.
Which is why, in part, why he was able to get away with it for so long. Apart from being a bully and a dickhead. He had us all believing that he was clean. It was his recovery from cancer that made it credible. As much as i dont like him i will say this. Everybody was doping at that time. Nearly everybody. Everybody in the top ten was doping. Those that were not were insignificant or domestique's. As much as i dont like lance i will say that he was just leveling the playing field.
I assume I would NOT dope for the same reasons. Even more so since testicular cancer is by some experts believed to be triggered by - doping substances...
