This made me very nostalgic for WFRP. I've played many systems and I think it's possibly the best, but that has a lot to do with the consistent Warhammer art style and the typically incredible adventure modules. To show how long ago since I played it: W8 was considered a lot of Wounds, and stats like S and T were 1-10 rather than percentile. It really is the modules though - they put most other adventure modules to shame, with relatively complex stories, fantastic maps, many handouts and some puzzles that don't insult your players' intelligence. I liked the level-up system too. It may have changed since I played, but each occupation had what was essentially a list of upgrades and you could purchase them with XP in just about any order. Since the upgrades were a finite list, you couldn't really get people min-maxing. The way they stopped every character being the same was the freedom to choose upgrades in any order, and the ability to switch to another occupation and start taking upgrades for that "class". After playing D&D it's a very different system, but ultimately much better in most ways.
Careers have always made much more sense than classes, even with people assuming non-sequitur careers just to raise a stat
I have this starter and it is the gold standard for what should be included in an intro set. The Zweihander starter is equally good. Both sets deliver hours of play well beyond the limp offerings of other companies
What 'other companies'? Even though I'm hardly a fan of D&D, it's hard to deny that Lost mines of Phandalver is fantastic. Runequest starter set has everything that WFRP has and more, and its starter adventures are actually good. Fria Ligan starters are in the league of its own.
On the other hand this starter has what? A guide to Ubersreik and pair of nice d100. Everything else is a waste of paper that makes disservice to the setting.
Do you ever get a sense of Deja Vu? I'm a fan of WFRP, Cubicle 7, and PDM. C7 is a terrific studio - everything I have purchased from them is high quality and is well wrought. PDM is also a terrific creator. I highly recommend WFRP to anyone who likes their fantasy grim and dark. If it's too crunchy for you, just use PDMs Deathbringer rules. The lore and background is soooo deep.

The best thing WFRP brings to the table is, in my extremely humble opinion, the world. Every single fantasy game I've ever ran has at the very least borrowed very heavily from the universe. You can't have a major city without rumours of ratmen skittering in the sewers!
I bought C7's Lone Wolf rpg several years ago - lots of loving attention for every detail of Joe Dever's setting. The foldout color map is stunning.

Looks like a good time. My group has done the older version of the Warhammer Fantasy and all of them remember the guys that had maggots for blood. The fact that was on a random table was amazing and terrifying, and we loved it. Thanks for the quick run down of this set.

It's always nice to know what a starter set has. This looks really good for $30, and the durability it looks to have is great as it allows it to be used for multiple groups. I know some people can be upset when a starter set doesn't have rules for character generation and leveling to mid tier (in part because I used to be that way), but having run some myself I've found they can be very useful for seeing if your table likes the setting and rules without having to delve as deep into the treasury for something that might be little more than a one shot. I think I might have to give this a go after my current campaign.
No surprise warhammer’s system appears similar to COC 7th edition. Mike Mason used to work for Games Workshop before joining Chaosium. I had similar thoughts when I read GW’s Dark Heresy.

That starter set is one of the best value I've seen for a starter set. It's really nice.
Production-wise it's good. But starting adventure is one of the worst, if not the worst WFRP has to offer.
@@stepansraka3608 I was wondering that, I ran through the first half so far and it's been a bit meh, alot of scene setting and pushing the players into situations and less player agency. I was okay with it though to some degree as a starter set to ease players into more sandboxy or open adventures. Still good point though, what do you think are some good alternative adventures for new parties?

1) "Night of Blood" is a classic, all-around good introductory scenario. And it's free.
2) "If Looks Could Kill" is a blast as well, good fit if they roll some riverfolk characters. It has some sandboxy elements, and nice murder-mystery twist. Although, some folks claim that it reads better than it plays. Also free.
3) "Enemy in shadows" is another great starting point. A bit of a risk for a group that isn't familiar with RPGs outside of D&D, .
4) "A Rough Night at the Three Feathers" is quite something, but requires the right group and will put your GM skills to the test.

My first RPG I’ve ever played in 1989 - I played it solo and still play it solo today! I play 4e, but use 2e combat and magic systems. And some things from 1e.

A couple of points:
There isnt really hit point creep as such. Though a character's starting wounds are higher its hard to increase them further. Also damage dealt us generally higher than 1st and 2nd edition.
If you score a hit and roll a double (11, 22, 33 etc ) you score a critical hit. That means a roll on the critical wound table. So you might have 15 wounds left and still get maimed / killed.
Bleeding to death is a thing!
In each round of combat there will be a winner and loser. The winner gets a bonus in the next round.
Large creatures (ogres, trolls etc) are deadly - like 1 hit 1 kill deadly. Even bigger creatures more so.
Fortune points are rerolls. The characters 'luck'. These (and fate points) make the game a lot less deadly - at first. But fate and fortune run out :-)
Dark deals can give additional rerolls. But your making a bargain with the powers of chaos. That is bad :-)
Its a complex game and has a few issues (many of which are addressed in optional rules) but its a great update on a classic system.

I love to Pillage WHRP adventures. One shots of the Reikland is all good and ports to other systems easy. The first adventure in Hard Days and Hard Nights is awesome, but I haven't read the others, yet. I don't need to bring up the legendary Enemy Behind the Throne, but I did.
I've just recently started a campaign and I'm utilizing the Adventure Book (the team started from 'If Looks Could Kill' and created their PCs from scratch). So far the players are loving being pressed into the Town Watch :D I'm very weary of railroading them though - the module is for begginers and feels like it sometimes really wants to hold the GM's hand.
Was just looking for more info on this bought it long ago on humble bundle and was looking at getting into it :D
I do love Warhammer, as crunchy as the rules are. It's a bit disconcerting though if your dice refuse to cooperate during combat. Yes, in terms of crunch, Rolemaster is up there with Grape-Nuts.

That looks like a superb starter set. I wasn't impressed with Cubicle 7's really half-assed 40K rpg, but it looks like they're doing a decent job of stewardship with the old classic Warhammer Fantasy game.

Great review! WFRP is a very good system, and it has a TON of atmosphere. Cubicle 7's artwork and polish is 1st rate. Unfortunately, I loathe WFRP's 'roll-under' d100 system; much preferring Rolemaster's open-ended one.
I've been so tempted by WFRP 4e, the lore, the books look amazing, etc etc. But everything I've seen/read/heard the mechanics just don't do enough for me. Picked up all of 2e a few years ago Humble Bumble and feel like with a few tweaks it's just as good if not better than 4e. The books are beautiful though...🤔
4e suffers a lot from complexity for complexity's sake. Combat is godawful and a major pain in the neck for GM to calculate for something that often boils down to "attack with basic melee 8 rounds in the row". 2e, while flawed, has half the math and twice the flavor.
Interesting that inside cover of my box set had map of the empire in it vs game information. One of the best starter box set imo.

I have also covered the starter set as well and recently covered the 1st edition core rulebook.
I love WHFRP! I still use the 2nd edition rules to this day. To me, it's my favorite system because the percentile nature of the stats makes it easy to teach someone the rules in about 5 minutes. I also love Warhammer lore and setting, having played the miniatures game since the early 2000s. One of my favorite memories remains running the There's No Such Thing as Skaven pre-written adventure for a group of 3 friends.
I saw this at GenCon too, I regret not buying it then.
I can say that I have thoroughly enjoyed playing WFRP. I will say from past experience 4th is not as deadly as the older systems. If anyone is interested in picking these up, then at time of writing Humble Bundle is running a Warhammer RPG book bundle. It comes with the core rules for Fantasy a few supplements, and the starter set. It also comes with two other systems (40K and Age of Sigmar) that I personally don't like but no bundle is perfect.

In 4 ed. you can get critical hits before you are out of HP. It is much more brutal this way.
WFRP 4 ed. Starter Set is absolutely brilliant. You get a huge adventure, basically a small campaign, with ten additional plots connected to a particular PC from the set, which can make for a full-fledged character-driven campaign. Then you get an entire book on the city of Ubersreik and a province it is a part of - a place where you can spend dozens of game sessions.
You can play for years with just that set - you need character progression rules from the core book though.

Purists may disagree, but Mongoose Traveller's products are really nice; layout and art and presentation are quite good. I'm more interested in SWN but there's attractively presented material in Mongoose's Traveller products.

I enjoyed WFRP 1st edition back in the late 80s, I didn't realize this was out, will have to pick it up. FWIW, I think Paranoia is deadlier.
For as many times as I have seen you pump the Warhammer RPG this is the first time I'm thinking I want to check it out- good review.
Ty for the input
I've run this Starter Set, the first book of The Enemy Within, and a couple of side quests. This edition of Warhammer 4e is oddly convoluted.
First, it's not "necessarily" a roll-under system. Every skill is modified by the GM - so I will tell you something like "roll under an easy check" and you add +40% to your skill and roll under that. Rolling under your skill without any modification is considered a Challenging roll, so you're almost always adding or subtracting something.
Opposed checks. You're counting degrees of success by units of ten. So if you're trying to spot a cultist sneaking up on you at night, you're rolling Perception with maybe a -10% penalty vs. the cultist's Stealth with a +30% bonus in a foggy night. Then you tally up who succeeded by the number of 10s and use that for bonus damage or whatever.
Characters can also be strangely fragile. A character died from falling 10 feet.
Then you have four types of metacurrency that is easy to confuse. Fate, Fortune, and two others that start with the same letters.
I found myself wishing the setting and adventures were written in any other system. When you get into character creation, you can randomly roll a knight in full armour with fantastic combat skills, or be a poop farmer. Or you can just select the knight and forgo a paltry amount of bonus XP (which is the only mechanical incentive to the random character creation option.)
It feels like a game designed literally by the forces of Chaos, and I hate it.
I do believe the random generation just gives you free experience if you accept vs pick your result. Also, depending on the type of game you're playing, it is a good system to create villager characters that have to defend against a beastmen incursion or something to that effect. You're less powerful, but that forces you to rely on your wits and other skills. Anyway, it's good stuff for the right situation. But I agree, it can lead to some sub-optimal outcomes which may not be everyone's cup of tea.
@@klinktastic yes. But the "free experience" you get is negligible. Maybe what you would expect to get during the course of 1-2 sessions of play. In my mind, for it to be equivalent, the character should get to start with an Advanced Career. There is a massive difference between starting with a dung farmer with no coin, no useful skills, and poor stats - guaranteeing an irrelevant party role and quick death - and something like a potent magician, armored warrior, a dedicated healer, etc. It's a beginner trap of ivory tower design like we saw in 3rd edition D&D. Worse of all, the designers encourage this terrible form of worthless character creation.
That's the point of WFRP (also of old 40k rpgs like DH and its ilk), you play as common if somewhat lucky mortals.
Iconic WFRP character is the rat catcher, not some knight, mage or slayer.
This has nothing to do with ivory tower design, it's more about simulationism.
Random character creation being relegated to optional rule is one of the main faults of 4e. it's really sending mixing signals here.
Also, I fail to see how it's possible to die at all, with all the mounds of fate and fortitude and whatnot that system gives you.
When this video was posted I was just thinking that I would love to see more videos on WFRP from you. It's a wonderful system, but very hard to find good content about on youtube.
I did reviews of the new versions of The Enemy Within Campaign and they did not perform well. Which is weird because my initial review of WFRP 4th got 100k views. Glad you enjoyed it, though. It's Avery good set.

I only played a little WH, and I loved it. My single lasting memory is my thief hanging upside down by his legs, and killing a guy by plunging a punching dagger thru the top of his skull. Death by Trepanation!

I played the demo adventure (I was the dwarf slayer). Liked it but not sure about it. It’s a game of maiming enemies or getting maimed. It’s like Dead Space the RPG. Really shows what a genius move it was to keep combat abstract in D&D.
I have this set, it’s really nice quality and really makes me want to play! Unfortunately, my players aren’t fans of grimdark, so. . .maybe some day???
Do a one shot! Or find new players. Who says you can't have two groups?

Its a great system. Its not as deadly as its made out to be, though combat is pretty nasty. Its very 'crunchy' and detailed (thats a strength in my opinion not a weakness). Bits the sh*t out of d&d with a trollslayers axe :-) (again just my opinion !)
The various supplements for it are great. Winds of Magic for wizards and Up in Arms for melee focused characters
The core set is a great deal.

I wish it came with some blank sheets but they gave a fantastic content for the price set.
The Guide To Ubersreik in the Starter Set is absolutely brilliant, full of flavour, interesting characters, and adventure hooks. You could hang a dozen campaigns off it. The adventures in the Adventure Book are just dreadful though - absolute abuse of GM fiat to railroad the characters through a miserable series of events.
I was going to run this adventure, you think it is that bad?
Startesets are always rail-roady to make sure things moves on, no one is left behind/solo off etc. I was considering using the add ons to keep some options available.
Any reccomendations?
@@PMMagro You're right that starter set adventures are usually pretty rail-roady, and justifiably so, but I thought the way its framed and the characters are forced into positions was just awful. To be fair to it, I haven't actually run or played it so perhaps it plays better than it reads. And the smaller scenarios in it are useful fodder for further adventures.
I got a stack of adventures alongside the starter set from a Humble Bundle. The first one I ran with my group was "Bait and Witch", slightly modified to work with my band of PCs. We are all experienced roleplayers though, so I wasn't too worried about system introduction.
Another really good one was "Rough Night at the Three Feathers" from "Rough Nights and Hard Days" - although I don't like the way that campaign fits together so some modifications required.
If you run the Adventure Book, you need to treat it as a tutorial. I agree it's too linear, but it's useful for a GM and players learning the game. Just let the players know to expect railroading and that you'll let them roam free when it is over. Think of it as that first half hour or so of a video game where it's teaching you all the button combos.
@@jbaidley I haven't run these specific adventures, but I translated them. I agree that the presentation is pretty much just a tutorial with a lot of forced moments that are meant to showcase how the game works, rather than allowing experienced players to roam free.
Later adventures are much better, but many other start with the idea that "the Characters are in a bad spot, no matter what". Even the Imperial Campaign has a pretty forced starting point (albeit with a great twist).
So true. You're better off picking at random from Ubersreik adventures if you want to introduce someone to WFRP. Starter adventure is beyond abysmal, as is the roster of "iconic" characters.

I played Warhammer Fantasy a long time ago, and while I loved it, many of the players in the group I DM'd for were pretty straight D&D players. So, I just ported in the grimdark flavor, monsters, and characters I liked and just ran Warhammer Fantasy, but with D&D.

I really like the Warhammer system but I usually use my homebrew world with these rules.
I've been adapting some of their storylines for 5e. Maybe I should just be running it using their system, but you know it's hard to convince players to try new systems. Still, I live the overall "feel" of Warhammer's stories. They are not only full of evil, dark cults to vile deities, but also plenty of court intrigue, politics, social interactions, lots of fun urban adventure.
I can't imagine playing Warhammer-esque storylines with 5e. That ruleset is horrible for anything else than superhero comic characters.
@@ratatatuff It's not so bad. Warhammer is pretty superheroic too to be honest (the setting - I don't really know about the rules-set). There's plenty of sorcery and demons and monsters to be slain, but more importantly plenty of roleplay opportunities and you can do that in almost any ruleset with players who are into it. Would it be better in its own native rules? Probably, but its actually a very easy conversion.
@@RonPower I don't think it's that easy. The power level is very different. In Warhammer you start as an absolute zero and if you're a magic user you got to be extremely careful. 5e is certainly not made for grimdark. The Warhammer setting is deadly, so are the rules.
@@ratatatuff to be fair, WFRP 4e isn't made for grimdark either. But yeah, I fail to see how it's possible to port warhammer magic to D&D, it's utterly incompatible.

@@DUNGEONCRAFT1 Ok, I just felt the thumbnail was missleading as it made me think you would check if Warhammer had gone soft with its current version.
Wait until you see the 40k RPG's crit tables; one set for the 4 damage types; so while an 8 with a rending weapon is like WFRP, using an energy weapon might mean the marrow boils instantly and turns your shin into a bone frag grenade.
QUESTION: Professor Dungeun master, what would you consider a quick - fantasy boardgame to ease my beginners into DnD??? Or another channel that covers this one...
Ooo. Good one. I generally don't play dungeon crawlers because--you know. I do this all day. As far as Fantasy Games I REALLY liked Cadwallon: City of Thieves. We don't play it much anymore but it has minis and I found it fun.

Fastest Character deaths I ever experienced were;
One - where I was playing which was Role Master being run by a jackass, who got grumpy when we were meeting in the tavern and one of the players wanted to start in a room upstairs and make his entrance by striding manfully down the stairs. The GM (being a jackass) made him roll some stupid stat or skill and he fumbled. Compounded the fumble and died before he hit the bottom of the stairs. (This was also the shortest campaign I ever participated in.)
Two - was when I was running Tunnels and Trolls for my regulars, but one player had only ever played D&D. He was playing a Minotaur, and when the party encountered a group of goblins he charged headlong into the middle of them despite having had the combat rules very carefully explained to him... so he was basically fighting 8 goblins. They only had a Monster rating of 10 each, but that equated to 9d6+40 on their combined combat roll. His Axe had a mighty 3d6+something like 8 or 10. He had about 10 Armour Points and about 25 hit points.
They marmalised him in one round, while the others were strategising Buff spells, potions and fighting formation.
I let him start a new identical Minotaur character with the reminder, "This ain't D&D!"

That Kickstarter you talked about at the beginning is pretty cool and I'm getting the books but their STL files are way too expensive.
WFRG is a tradition RPG where you doing your best not to get into combat, but the deadliest has to be Middle-earth Role Playing the criticals can hinder to cripple or even insta-kill.
Having played both both are pretty deadly but MERP has to be the deadliest.
Any advice for a brand new GM? I bought this on a whim since I am a huge WH fan and avid reader of the books. The booklet makes it seem like a new person can learn it from this alone but I quickly found (in the middle of my first session with friends) that I simply didn’t have all of the information I needed to continue and had to stop the adventure and apologize to my group. Is there a good video(s) to learn the basics/GMing?

They said the same thing when digital art replaced what had "always been." Also when photographs replaced paintings, especially landscape stuff like Ansel Adam's. There's always a portion of some crowd that decries the spread of a new tool as soulless or whatever, but they always go away as the new tool becomes widespread. Using AI as a tool to get good results of no less of a learned skill and an art than is using Photoshop or a camera or a brush.

AI is literally soulless, because a human is not creating it. It's randomly generated by an algorithm. It's as soulless as you can get.
Curating an algorithm by using certain words to get results is very much a lesser learned "skill" (lol) than doing digital or physical art by your own hand.

I've not played 4th Ed WFRP, but I've played a LOT of 1st&2ed. It's easily my favourite TTRPG, and is deadly. But Rolemaster and BRP are deadlier! 😂
The Zweihander starter set pisses on this... Useable rulebooks (player guide and GM guide) including char gen, vastly superior scenario (the one in the WH starter set is really bad), GM screen, handouts, cards for play including injuries, gritty art, etc. So much better. Best bit of the WH starter set is the guidebook; its really nicely done.
That's a whole lotta subjective opinions stated as fact. I myself much prefer the WFRP starter set as a *starter* set. It gets you into the game quick, teaches you the basics and the vibe of the system and the world nicely and doesn't contain unnecessary wank that a lot of other starter sets fall for just in the name of a more grandiose presentation.

@@DUNGEONCRAFT1 I think so, yeah. The main adventure in the WH starter set has some of the worse railroading I've experienced in all the RPGs I've read over the last 40 years of gaming. It really makes the starter set a worthless purchase for learning and playing the game. It's only saving grace is the guidebook, that's great - packed full of interesting stuff.
If I wanted to play 2nd edition wfrp I’d just play whfrp2e and not bother with one of the biggest assholes in rpg gaming. Zweihander is just 2nd edition with the serial numbers filed off and a few slight alterations, like I wonder if he just copy pasted entire sections whole cloth. At least with wfrp I get an amazing world and art from people like Blanche

I liked the dice, sigh. I like percentile systems, just get right to it, easy for all to grok, low math...and the dice are a bit special not-from-grandma's-yahtzee-set.

I love the setting, but prefer a roll-over system. Still, as WFRP tends to work in units of 5%, it isn't too much of a faff to covert it into a D20 game.
its more the career and skills of the system than d100 vs d20 to be honest. The system yields more interesting and unique PCs of the same career.
