Iris’ brother being named Forest caused me to cast him as Tom Hanks. Her saying they get mistaken as twins made me use gender swap AI on Tom Hanks. She is now Tom Hanks💀
Tom & Tommie
Same😂
my adhd on a tuesday:
Okay the field scene? IT GOT MEEEE!! I COULD IMAGINE IT SO VIVIDLY AND MY HEART WAS POUNDING!!
Me tooooo, I was in it. I was so immersed, I felt I was Iris in that moment
I WAS CLUTCHING MY CHEST THERE WAS SO MANY EMOTIONA
Same here! Like my heart actually started pounding, I could feel the grass on my skin and ugh so well written! I was even holding my breath lmao
OH THANK GOD I was so worried when I saw the thumbnail - I love this book so much I kinda wanna turn it into a musical 👀👀👀
That sounds like an amazing idea and even though I haven't read this book I would if it became a musical
So like DO IT DO IT DO IT and also please keep us posted
Please, please do this. It would be an amazing musical
I loved your emphasis on the characters internal conflict, the cold unreliable relationship Roman had with his family but he noticed and tried to be present for Iris struggle. I also found it very beautiful how he was able to share with her his grief that his father wouldn't acknowledge but also manipulate him with. I felt he is an open and sensible male character, comparing to other books where they are very restricted to "male" gender expressions, like being agressive or never crying. Roman had almost a panick attack when he found out he was engaged against his will and he went to his comfort zone which was write to Iris.
Yes!!!! I really should’ve dived into Roman’s mental health more because I thought this book handled that so well
On what you said about the ending (spoilers ahead)…
She did fight really hard to get away from Forest. In the scene she gets away from him and starts running towards Roman but then her brother grabs her by the throat and causes her to pass out so that he can run away with her without her fighting him. That’s why it feels like right at the end of the chapter she isn’t fighting because she’s going unconscious.
Wow, it's so infrequent that we see you absolutely giddy over a book! This is definitely going to be my next read. Thanks Rachel!
I read this book after Fourth Wing and thank god I did because this was a palate cleanser. The contrast in quality was jarring! It was so good I love it so much. ❤
OMG. Good thing I have read your comment. I literally finished Fourth Wing and I am looking for my next book to read. I might go with this one.
Agreed. Finally some quality writing and slow burn romance
Haven't watched yet, but couldn't resist complimenting your makeup. I LOVE that shade of purple, stunning!!
Oh thank you!
As an indie author it is also helpful to hear the positive review stuff because it helps me to recognize the parts of the craft that hit hardest in the reader. (: Loved listening to this.

And I'm watching it all because I won't be reading it.
Get that yummy money, Rachel
Thank you 😂❤
Hi, Rachel since you said you were starting to learn about the craft of writing. May I propose to you the book "Craft in the real world" by Matthew Salesses. It's a really good book that talk about how culture influenced what we all think is "good writing" and how many of our convention we take as fact. Are really just cultural and set by...you can kinda guess it but western white men. To continue I really REALLY recommend to look up the tumblr of Kim Yoonmi 김윤미. She is an author and artist who majored into cultural anthropology and was the first to research where does the 3 act structure really come from. Watch out because it's a story full of plagiarism and white men (I swear I'm not trying to bash on any white men reading this. This is seriously just the fact) pushing everyone else and imposing their story structure. Kim Yoonmi compiled multiple story structures from all over the world and also make really good and science based posts on worldbuilding. Seriously, I recommend every writers to check her tumblr because it's a treasure trove of information.
20:25 I understand the frustration of parents denying trauma. Both my husband and I have this issue with our parents, and it can honestly bring all that trauma back.
Girl, you totally nailed this review. GREAT JOB! And you have absolutely sold me on reading this!
Yay, thank you! I’m so glad ❤
I trust your opinion-our tastes tend to align. I have the book but I haven't had the chance to read it yet, but all the positive reviews and your endorsement moved it up on my way too big TBR.
I also used your SkillShare link last month! Thanks!
Love the sheer giddy joy here! I love seeing people genuinely just gushing about something they love.
This is exactly how I was after I read it. I read Divine Rivals in April and I'm still emotional and think about it all the time, it's so beautiful and romantic. I saw your thumbnail and got worried but I'm glad you loved it :)
I gave this 4 stars because I feel like it did really lose steam for me toward the end and I wanted more of the lore at the forefront, but I absolutely adored the dynamic between Iris and Roman, I loved Roman completely being a sucker for Iris, and I LOVED Attie!!!! I also really felt for Iris when her mom passed because I've been through that and the emotions were SO raw and relatable. I will definitely pick up the second book.
no worries girlll, you have readers like me who appreciate BOTH of your negative & positive reviews! ❤ as for THIS positive reviewww, i thought you were so cute fangirling about it cos your reactions brought me back to my own fangirling when i was feeling the FEELINGSSS reading this book!!! 😂 UGH I AGREE WITH EVERYTHING YOU FELT & SAID ABOUT THIS BOOK (down to the minor flaws & all)! Keep em honest, we love to see ittt!!! ✨✨✨
This was one of the best books I’ve read in a while - super refreshing after reading Throne of Glass and not enjoying the lead heroine. I LOVED the leads in this book, I loved their hopeful words to each other, their individual motivations, their misunderstandings of each other turning into love. The story telling was brilliant. I want to learn more about (spoilers) the magic in Roman’s house - where it comes from, why flowers show up in teacups and boots. It’s so whimsical. The field scene had to be one of my favorites. I also loved Roman trying to distract her from reading the Carver letter in the trenches, him kicking her boot and throwing balls of paper at her had me laughing and smiling. THANK YOU for this review.
I was so mad reading the ending thinking it was a standalone 😂😂 December can't come soon enough Also one of my favs of the year
I love your rants but you gushing about this book is awesome too. I love the format of breaking it down spoiler free in the beginning. Thanks!
I’m literally obsessed, I cried so much, I’m so invested in this world.
I wanted a bit more world-building and I didn’t like the purity culture BS near the end (won’t say more to avoid spoilers). That said, I will 100% read the sequel.
I didn't really take it as purity culture personally.. just two young people who hadn't really dated much maybe (much like myself) I think if it had made a bigger deal about them being virgins then maybe I could agree but it was such a small moment in the book, a single fleeting line that I really don't think that's what the author had intended, again at least that's not the impression I got. Totally free to disagree with me I'm not trying to change your mind or anything, just stating my perspective, respectfully 🖤

I agree! TBH I actually loved the idea that they were each other's firsts! I feel like due to the popularity of ACOTAR with smutt/spice, there is also a rise in many books where characters hook up/have casual sex/one night stands before actually developing trust and feelings for each other first. IMO it just takes away from the romantic yearning/tension. I loved that Iris and Roman got to know each other first, trust and befriend each other and then get married. I agree that the book wasn't pushing purity culture at all by any means-there is a difference between having virgin mc by chance and pushing the narrative that you should wait to have sex to get married-which this book did not do at all
@@LovelyKittyfication yeah I definitely agree, I think both instances have their place, I think its important to represent people who are more sexually "free" so to speak and who enjoy casual sex etc I don't see a problem with that at all, but as someone who's Demisexual I definitely relate more to a romance like Iris and Roman where they have the love and trust built first before they sleep together. I think positive representation for both types of people is super important!
Since it’s set in England, I believe the characters say “Day-ka”. The British audiobook was really useful for this
I loved A River Enchanted. I have this book on my shelf..maybe gotta move it up in the queue lol. Thanks for the review!
I adored this book and was so surprised since I am not typically a historical romance person but I loved it. Pride & Prejudice feels like an extremely accurate comparison and it lives up to that kind of hype.
I love the ‘reviews are for readers’. I’m an author, BUT I’m also a reader and I’m in between books right now. Thanks for this! I will be reading it next! Your hair is super cute and I can’t say enough about your makeup. ALWAYS on point! I mean my friend was walking through the room and saw you and was like OMG! Her make up! It’s always so pretty! 😊❤🙌🏽
I think this is the first time I won't finish one of your videos. I actually want to read this before getting into the spoilery review. You've sold me!
I’m so happy to hear this 😩🥹
"reviews are for readers" graphic was fireeeeee ❤️❤️ love to the artist
So glad you liked it! I had an arc and was so surprised by this one, especially as I don't usually like war books or enemies to lovers. It sneaks up on you!
Oh this review 😍 I loved this book so much. The magic typewriters and personal history was one of my fave bits. We have a family heirloom of an old chimney from a house my grandmother's grandparents built and everyone in our family has a photo standing by it at all the important events in our lives and...it's such a weird heirloom but I treasure it so much.
Also definitely don't read the sequel to raybearer. It does not hit the same at all.
Miss ma’am either you or MyNameIsMarines were going to read Vampires of El Norte. And it sounded good so I read it. And…. Oh man do I need a review on it .I can’t be the only one reading it going “ what the hell was that”
i have the audio and its on my tbr for next month!
The intro art has been fantastic. Your make-up is amazing.
That out of the way, this review was so much fun. Love how it was structured, love the joy in your voice while talking about it. The book is now on my TBR, thank you!
You mentioned this book so often that I had to give it a go-borrowed it from Kindle and the audio from my library, and wow. I finished it today and had to watch your (excellent) review immediately! It was just such an immersive story with thorough character development, and the magic elements were integrated without the heaviness of obvious exposition. I’m not really a romance girlie but I am for THIS book. How much Roman loves herrrrrr omgggg😭😭😭♥️
So thank you for sharing your love of this book, it’s now among my favorites! 🥰
I loved this book so much, so I'm so glad to hear you enjoyed it too! This is the second year in a row that Rebecca Ross has given me one of my favorite books of the year. A River Enchanted was one of my favorite books of 2022 and now Divine Rivals will be on my 2023 favorites list. Can't wait for the sequel!
I love seeing you have a win ❤
i literally pulled an all nighter to read this book this past sunday and i am equally obsessed with it and can not wait til december! i think your manner of applying the 4 c’s really reminded me of how immersive the writing truly was. i think it really did make you feel and care for both iris and roman but also many other characters as well.
I was so ready for your happy rant. ❤ your videos.
I was worried about trying this. Might give it a shot.
I think I might reread this book already, I’m SO excited for the next one!!!
I have never heard about this book before now, but you convinced me to immediately add it to my tbr pile. I love fantasy and I love steampunky settings. Also I appreciate the spoilers; I don't like worrying about whether a character dies or not so it's nice to know who makes it through the book ahead of time
Keep the smooth transition sis, we see you! Well I do at least
This sounds cute, I may check it out! I enjoyed hair twirling, giggling, positive review Rachel!
I am so so happy you loved this book! I was so nervous when I saw you made a video about it. Lol. I loved this book so much it got a 30 min video of me just rambling about my love for it and predicting what I think will happen in the next one. 😂 mine was definitely more along the word vomit “eeee” you mentioned lmao. Also, I completely agree that it was more a historical romance with just a smidge of fantasy thrown in.
I literally finished reading this book and then saw you posted this video. It was a 5 star for me too! I loved it so much. I read it on my kindle but WILL be buying a physical copy because I enjoyed it that much. Can’t wait for December!!
I'm reading this book, just because of your review- and I LOVE IT SO much! I downloaded the e-book yesterday evening and I'm already 77% in...can't remember the last time a book had me hooked this much. I don't want it to end!😭🤧 So, thank you so much! ❤💘 Without your review I would never have tried it. 😘😘😘
I love watching you gush about your favorite books. Even though I haven't read this one in particular, seeing you reacting happily over it makes me happy in return. I just might have to go out of my way to read it! I need a good heartstring-puller every now and then. :)
I’m so glad you enjoyed this book!! I was doing a Macmillan internship this summer and one of my jobs was to collect all the PR for the book presentation. I didn’t read it at the time but now I feel like I need to.
Wow that sounds like a fun internship!
I loved this new review style! I also have trouble explaining why something emotionally works so well for me in fiction and I think approaching giving praise in a systematic way like this actually opens something that was locked in a safe before inside my brain and suddenly I can explain EXACTLY why I feel the way I do. I feel like you had a similar experience in this review, which is a joy. 😅
Never have I been this early to one of your videos, I'm so excited!!!
Hope you enjoy!
I just finished this book TODAY and remembered you did a video on it so came here immediately to see if we had the same thoughts... and we did! I got so scared around the 80% mark because things were so wonderful I KNEW something bad was going to happen and I didn't want to read on. I had some incredibly minor gripes about the book, but I was so swept up in the characters and their dynamic that I just didn't care! I was highlighted and folding away little phrases to mimic in my own writing, just perfectly apt and simple ways of describing various actions, because the prose was just so polished. (My biggest minor gripe is that I wish it was longer! More banter, please and thank you.)
I've been so good at resisting this book but after hearing your review I may need to put a hold out on it and give it a go.
Also your makeup today is just *chefs kiss* it always is but today is like...the lavender is just hitting me right in the vibes.
yes. yes i was shocked. i have also sent this to a dear friend who hunts out books i want while they thrift. then we got to heirlooms. & i am now sobbing. all the LOVE Rachel
i finished this after i saw that you made this review and wow you did not disappoint, NEED BOOK TWO NOW.
YOU AND ME BOTH
I loved this book and I have been checking your page every day to see your review!! I'm so glad you loved it too! It's nice to finally agree on something for once! (though I love your videos no matter what, I love how they make me think)
I'm so happy you got to read something you love!!
There is something so persuasive about the way you talk that makes me want to read more
I read Rebecca Ross’s adult duology first, A River Enchanted/A Fire Endless and absolutely loved them. I decided to give it a try (I don’t generally read YA anymore), but I was so pleasantly surprised by how much I loved this. I listened to the audiobook, and finished it at work, the ending had me sitting there with my mouth hanging open and I audibly gasped lolll. I can’t wait for the sequel and I’m sooo happy you also loved this too!
I had only vaguely heard of this book prior to seeing your video on it (Mainly just 'this is a book on my tbr pile' videos). I'm halfway through the audiobook and I love it so much. Definitely wouldn't have given it a second thought if not for seeing how much you loved it. Thank you.
This is the only review I have seen that made me interested in this book, now I am excited!!
Hokay! I started this video 3 days ago, your non spoiler section of the video piqued my interest so fiercely that I bought the book the next day when I had the funds available. I just now finished the book and finished your review (paused it once spoiler territory started as to not spoil the book for me) and can I just say I LOVE ROMAN C. KITT holy hell, that man he reminds me so much of my fiancé and the book just had so many endearing moments and heartfelt scenes, Iris and her struggles sang so heavily to my soul I felt like I was reading my own diary at times. I cried so many times within just the first 10 minutes of reading. This book very quickly climbed to my top 5 list. I agree with you the ending I was kinda frustrated with for the same reasons you listed but also loved the rest of the book so much that I was able to ignore it for the most part. That's the only down side for me though. I loved this book thank you so much for making this video cause I don't think I would have found it otherwise 🖤 I struggle a lot with feeling alone and not good enough and this helped me feel seen for at least for the last few days. Thank you. I'm gonna go cry now lol.
I am grateful to stumble upon your UA-cam channel, This book is one of the books I want to read on my list. I was thinking about finding book reviewers who has read these books before so I plan to buy and read it.
The Enya reference. 🤣 One of my favorite things is to see someone go on about something that they love. You clearly adore this book, and it was a joy to hear what made you love it so much. (Not that I don't appreciate your other reviews calling out bad writing - I also love a good rant!)
I just read Divine Rivals because of your review and I absolutely loved it! Iris and Roman are one of the cutest couples I've read in a long time and even the mostly-out-of-nowhere wedding didn't bother me that much because of the whole relationship constructed in the letters! I was really hoping to see your review of Ruthless Vows because I always check goodreads before reading a book and oh god, it looks like it's not gonna be what we were hoping for in a sequel. I've started the book, I'm currently at 5%, and it's boring. I read some spoilers, and I'm very tempted to DNF Ruthless Vows and look for a fanfic that changes the end in Divine Rivals, because I just wanted a cozy happily ever after, not a pointless war and crazy plot and no romance.
I only watched a little bit when this video first debuted, stopped and added it to my TBR. I just finished reading it last night and am wrecked. Can’t wait to grab the next one.
Hope you enjoy it!
Im glad you enjoyed the book. Ive read A River Enchanted (loved every second of it) and am waiting for A Fire Endless to hit paperback. Im glad her other books are also good.
I FINISHED THIS BOOK TODAY AND I LOOOOOVED IT. I was thinking of Hades-Persephone too!! It added to the mythical ~feeling~
loved this review and thanks for sharing your story. I'm glad you got a chance to feel so connected with the book❤ Iris and her mum and their dynamics, it was all really heartbreaking. I have mixed feelings about this book, the world building is excellent and the first part got me so excited. Unfortunately, I am a bit underwhelmed about how they handled the war part and the moment of Roman's "coming out", I was expecting a little more intensity - not sure how to explain it. But I'm definitely curious to read what comes next!
i loved this sm i can't stop thinking about it, its starting to concern me
I love your hair and makeup ❤️
Great job on the non spoiler part of the review! Definitely a great improvement for your positive reviews! And then….you hit me with the spoiler section and made me relived every feeling I had about this book…🥺😭 This book got me right in the feels…I hadn’t felt that invested in characters since Addie LaRue.
Oh my gosh I cried at the end of Addie larue
I absolutely love this book and agreed with every single thing you’re sad. It is absolutely one of my favorite books of all time. I can’t get past thinking about it and I really really hope the next when it’s just as good it’s top of my list.
I LOVED this book! I just finished it and am looking for reviews. Your review is wonderful and thorough
Thank you so much! I’m glad you loved the book 💕
I felt the same way about it as you did, it really had me in my feelings
The GLEE is contagious. Great video!
Yay! Thank you!
I literally read this in one sitting and I cried so fucking hard with this book. It’s the sweetest little war story and I think about it daily at this point
A KINDRED SOUL
Me: knows how much you loved this book
Also me: still got scared by the thumbnail for a second
I got the gorgeous owlcrate edition and i am obsessed w this book
Wow, this is really insightful review! You definitely CAN do positive reviews :D Great job, I'm totally sold. Can't wait til it will be published in my country, for now original copies are crazy expensive.
I'm so relieved you liked this?!?
Also i just started Sisters of Sword and Song so I'm glad to hear it was a solid 3 star for you.
Also also, loved this review! I can't really explain why by Ross' writing just works for me so it's nice to see someone else actually explain what was so great about the book.
My biggest concern is something that will hopefully be addressed in book 2, that the coverage of the gods and war in this book felt a little one sided. Especially for something that seemed inspired by WWI which was such a messy war it seemed too clear cut here, but with what perspective in theory we will gain in book 2 I am tentatively hopeful the sequel will complicate things before wrapping them up.
I am very inclined to pick it up. What you described sounds right up my ally. I just have to survive my Our Flag Means Death revival with the new season hitting in two weeks and after I probably sobbed and laughed enough to calm down I will be glad to have something to sink my teeth in.
Somehow this one flew under my radar. But if you give it 5 stars, I'm definitely going to check it out! (Which is good, because I wasn't sure what to read next!)
I am 2 pages in to this book after watching the beginning of this video and I - AM - HOOKED. Thank you so much for the recommendation! I'll come back to finish the video once I'm done!
I’m so happy to hear this!
I wasn't planning on adding this book to my tbr list but these past few days I have changed my mind I have only read one book by rebecca ross which I did liked
I almost didn't watch this video because I absolutely FELL IN LOVE with this book and wasn't ready to hear it torn apart XD I'm so glad to hear my feelings validated haha fantastic review!!
I'm so glad!
omg Feelings! I love the positive reviews as much as the negative ones.
I'm so glad!
Loved this review!! ⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 for this first book!
The beginning art belongs in a museum
omg the way you talked about how youd have to have been knocked tf out to tear u away from ur husband carlos,,,,,,, GIRL YALL SO CUUUUTEEEE I CANTTTT!!!! praying 2 have a cuteass and lovely relationship like urs one day 🙏😭
I was on the fence about this book, and now I think I'll read it. I'm gonna wait for the second book to be out, though 😅
I'm happy you were able to find a book that you vibe with.
Your non-spoiler review was thorough and definitely cemented my faith that this book is going to be Actually Good, but ngl, you had me fully about two minutes into it. Completely and unquestionably hooked. Not watching the spoiler review because I have this book on hold at my library. Current estimated wait time is 17 weeks, which is going to be hard but also I have too many books and series I'm reading right now so I probably SHOULD wait that long lol
Rachel I want to read this book!!
Totally agree! I loved the concept of two warring Gods and humans being torn in the middle, but it also not being the standard Greek God trope, but something else entirely. The author was brilliant at taking an otherwise overused concept and turning it into something original. This book absolutely shattered me but also made me giddy with joy. I am dying for the sequel.
You gushing about a book you love is just as awesome as you ranting about the ones you hate. Basically, I love your reviews. Full stop. Looking forward to the next one, whichever flavor it may be. ❤
Wow! Thank you so much!
I started reading this book yesterday at 8pm, stopped at 2am because I had to sleep, wake up at 7am, and by 8:30 I had finished and I am OBSESSED level writing an email to netgalley if the accept a kidney for an ARC for the sequel. This is SOOOO GOOOOD. I wanted more of the lore (the religion system, the Gods) and some better descriptions of rooms and architectural structure, this is my only 2 complains. And if you haven't read Lovely War, please, read! Lovely War is like the big brother of Divine Rivals. Yes, there's a similar and better book than Divine Rivals around there.
Ah fantastic review ! I was super shocked how much I liked it, but having read more Ross this year shes quickly becoming a favourite author.
I think if Iove a river enchanted she's going to end up being an auto buy author for me!
@@ReadswithRachel ooh I hope you love A River Enchanted, I love her take on Scottish island culture
I read divine rivals a few weeks ago i really enjoyed it ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ im very excited to read the sequel
This book has become a new favorite of mine. I drank it up like I was thirsty for it. It was the sweetest, most pure lovestory. I feel like I will never recover
This makes me want to pick up this book now.
I really enjoy your videos but I had to skip this one for a while because I was in the middle of reading it. It brought a smile to my face to see you enjoy it, definitely a contender for the best book of the year, especially from a writing craft standpoint.
I have to say throughout reading this all I could think about was how this was so much like the Fire Emblem video game series specifically Fire Emblem Echoes Shadows of Valentia which also had two warring gods that also affected humanity (sibling dragon gods in this case) as a whole but I felt unlike Divine Rivals the gods were more involved with humanity, coexisting with them. Kinda wish Divine Rivals had a bit of that but what we did get was great. Other than that FE was more medieval with magic and cults as opposed to Divine Rival's setting. Watching the movie compilation of that FE game makes me wish Divine Rivals was adapted in a visual format, those key moments would have hit so much harder. I just imagine the music that would be playing though if Divine Rivals gets picked up by graphic audio to make a dramatized adaptation that could be possible. Fingers crossed we do since Fourth Wing is also getting one.
