For anyone wanting more information on maps and walks in the valley - there is the following leaflet available to download/print www.sheffield.gov.uk/content/dam/sheffield/docs/parks-sports-and-recreation/walks/Walks%20in%20the%20Shire%20Brook%20Valley.pdf
It used to be called scowerdon's farm when i was little. It was farm fields,we used to help the farmer with the hey bales. There was only one pond in which we called the swamp. Me and my friends from off the scowerdon's spent many years playing down there. In the trees near the little bridge leading up to Stone Lane was an old ruined house we called sally ann. There was old bottles and smoking pipes what we found. The bottom of Dyke Vale Road there's a big tunnel goes right under the road,we used run through it. The farmer sold his land to the council to build the dual carriageway. Me and my friends have happy memories from those days.
Tremendous video, I am relatively new to the area and tried to find out more about the history (much of which I guess was hidden for the benefit of the colliery, mining, landfill, waterworks etc) but I travel this route from Richmond area as a cut through for exercise en-route to Drakehouse/Crystal Peaks where I grab a coffee. I believe those blue chimney like pipes allow any gases to release, rather than building up within the landfill (I saw similar down south where they also used to burn off gas), I guess these could be just monitoring...I did hear that the manhole covers do hide some mining shafts. Your video now gives me the ability to explore a little more, and to actually context what is actually there.
I love this area. I've been back many times since I did the video and always find something new I'd not spotted before 😄. I've recently moved a bit further away and miss having this on my doorstep.
@@WobblyRunner It's definitely one of those places where you find something new each time - there seems to be encroaching development as well of late. A mazing to think that Shire Brook was a important border point for kingdoms going back a 1000 years, I am going to explore the area through to Birley Spa this weekend. I hope there is plenty for you to discover in the new area where you're. Cheers.

You are so lucky to have this sort of walk/run/cycle amenity on your doorstep, and you capture it so well, also good to see some hills for a cracking cardiovascular challenge. I love this type of history, those dam walls must be over one hundred years old, and they are still standing - brilliant. I'm definitely going to pop in there when I am next at Woodburn Road Stadium or the indoor athletics arena, the A57 runs back to Lincoln so I shouldn't get lost!!!
I went on walks down there in the late 70's and 80's. The works pumped in grey milky coloured water and the smell was appalling! I suspect that in the future the landfill will be dug up again, due to the fact the stuff is not decaying and a lot of rare metals and other stuff was dumped in landfills. It is cheaper to extract from the landfills then it is to get the rare materials straight from the ground!

will you be repeating this in 2024 ?
The Shirebrook valley used to be the border between Yorkshire and Derbyshire
Thanks Trevor.
I believe the village of Beighton was also in Rotherham too. Lots of boundary changes around this area.

Ah yes it's literally on your road 😄.
This video seems like a long time ago now.
