To honor Helio and to show they also have the self defense still in their Curriculum Royce Gracie lineage and Valentes wear a blue bar on the blackbelt instead of red (and Royce and Valente Bros wear a dark, navy bluebelt).
I love this video and this channel. I wish I could find a comprehensive list of all the martial arts belt ranking systems. I did Kenpo Karate as a youth: white, yellow, orange, purple, blue, green, brown, black. with stripes on the blue, green, and 3 on the brown before black. I think Ed Parker came up with that system. Why? How did he select that order? I do BJJ now: White, blue, purple, brown, black. Why? Who selected THOSE colors and when? Why isn't it more like Judo? I am not criticizing any ranking system at all. I am just curious about their origins and who and when they were codified. Other karate systems have their own method. TKD has it's own. All of it is borrowed from the Kododan (apparently), and I totally understand wanting to diverge to show your own style. Sometimes I wonder how the martial arts world would look and act if they all (regardless of style) followed that Kodokan system of: white, yellow, orange, green, blue, purple, brown, black...coral, red. Maybe it would help unify diverse systems, but maybe it would divide us further. Just rambling, but I love this stuff and think about it often. Oss.
Just one quick note...a few years ago the IBJJF added a judo style red & white belt for 8th degree. You'll see Carlos Gracie, Jr. wearing it. However, those that come from Helio's side refuse to wear it...with the exception of Rolker Gracie who does wear it.
Funny thing about that is that Carlos jr. Implemented that belt himself, when he himself was promoted to 8th dan 🤔 just wanted to give yourself a belt there did ya?
I have a friend a luso japanese he live here in portugal, he said in japan at least in his village only the kids use color belts. In judo and karate as well, so because of that you see a lot of young black belts at 19 or 20 years old.
Historically, the belt usually black or white worn in the old school Yagyu Shingan-ryu Jujutsu is for the purpose of seizing during grappling (yawara) or kata. It is not worn as identification of rank or influence of repute arising from success, achievement, or other favourable credits. In Yagyu Shingan-ryu Jujutsu a kakuobi is also worn to secure weapons (e.g. maezashi). In YSgR the obi refers to the sarashi worn around the waist area of the armour.
In judo, the black belt back in the days was from 1 - 10th dan. Red and white belt were used optional for 6 - 8th dan holders and red belt as an option for 9 - 10th dan. Black belts were used for serious practise - randori or shiai - while red white or red belts optional as instructor, sermonies or kata. In japan I have heard it was forbidden to throw masters in randori that wore red and white belt, but when the same masters used the black belt they could been thrown or shocked etc...
There's also this weird rule in BJJ that no one can get to 10th degree except for the the original Gracie brothers. But also one does not go directly to 1st degree after brown belt but simply black belt with no degrees, followed by degrees at fixed time intervals that vary depending on the federation or lineage... So effectively BJJ does have 10 black belt grades but they go from 0 to 9 instead of 1 to 10 as in judo.
Yeah that's true. When you get awarded a BJJ black belt, it's not got any degrees on it. I think you have to wait three years between each of the first three degrees. Then the time within the degrees gets longer. Like you said, it all depends on the association you're with. I've made a video about Judo Philosophy on my channel. Chadi, perhaps another video is deserved for the symbology of kodansha belts developed by Jigoro Kano, the red and white and the red. Also, why Jiu-jitsu chose a black and red instead (some use a white/red after the black/red and before the red).
Tradition ensures it won't happen since black belts are associated with mastery, but always thought it would be most logical to have belts awarded with a 🌈 progression in the same order as the spectrum of visible light. *Starting* with black symbolizing the student's lack of knowledge and skill, then red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, and finally a white belt to represent mastery, signifying the unification of all of the colors of visible light combined.
Other way around! At least in Taekwando. White is all light being reflected , visible light , hence a novice. Black is all Lights absorbed hence a master!! That makes more sense to me!!

Random info-- Master rank in Judo and Karate is 4th degree black belt while 1st to 3rd dan black belt is not. A lot of people who bring up the fact that BJJ black belts beat Judo black belts easily without realizing its not even the same ranking system. Jigoro Kano greatest mistake was the belt system I know they introduced it in the Western world and it caught on unfortunately it's had a negative effect on the martial way "too many people are chasing belts" which takes away from the heart and soul of a Marshall Way regardless of the discipline, I say this to all people who devote themselves to the martial arts forget about pomp and ceremony forget about belts Gie learning terminology learning Kata your discipline must be applicable in practical application if not it's nothing but nonsense OSU 👌
Theres nothing wrong with belts so long as the reflect performance in combat and character development. Martial arts would never have caught on outside Japan without a ranking system ,it gives students a tangible goal.
But it has also helped exposure. Ppl start martial arts with the hope that one day they will get a black belt. The same way ppl go to college in pursuit of a degree. U rarely hear of ppl going to college simply cuz they want to learn stuff. They want that degree. It is in pursuit of a degree that you will learn to appreciate what you are learning. IMO people who normally say things like "black belts are the biggest mistake" and "belts are pointless" are usually the people who have never earned a black belt. Thats like saying schools should not have grades
@@sliderx1897 the problem is when the grades are unrelated to performance , like useless fat masters and kid black belts.Doesnt happen in real combat sport arts like judo and bjj, more a tkd and karate issue.

@Chadi: Before the founding of the Jiu Jitsu federation of Guanabara in 1967 the Gracie belt system was white for students, light blue for instructors and dark blue for Professors. To honor Helio and to show they also have the self defense still in their Curriculum Royce Gracie lineage and Valentes wear a blue bar on the blackbelt instead of red (and Royce and Valente Bros wear a dark, navy bluebelt).
Indigo dye fades to purple and then to brown through uv exposure and washing.
More Gracie bullshit 🙄
The Club i'm at goes from White/Brown/Black (adults at a community college)
that was the same for me back around 2006 or so at a YMCA
Wow! That's keeping it old school!!! I've made a video about Judo Philosophy on my channel. Please check it out and let me know what you think 🙏🏾
Please check it out and let me know what you think 🙏🏾
That's not true
I just look at belts as time on the tatami .
Im a blue in bjj trained for three years five day's aweek then had a few years off.
Came back to jiu-jitsu and trained judo for a solid ten months got my adult yellow belt before i went to Brazil to train for two and a half months.
Now back training hard again again.
Amazing video, Chadi. Last month's adult Premium class was BJJ. This month's premium class right now is Inosanto Kali and Pekiti Tirisia Kali.
Kano was truly head and shoulders above the rest in his way of thinking
Totally!!! I've made a video about his philosophy of randori on my channel. Please check it out and let me know what you think 🙏🏾
Dear Chadi, I would like your help on a personal project - I have a book written in Japanese - Sanshiro Sugata
by Tsuneo Tomita. It is about the first judo blackbelt ever - Saigo Shiro. It is also the basis for Akira Kurosawa's first film - Sanshiro Sugata. The book has never been translated. Please write me I will share my idea more specifically. Thank you! Zev
Also in Karate they were only 5 th Dan till Kano promoted Funakoshi to 10 th Dan post life so when GM Chow taught Kenpo they were only 5 th Dan was the highest I have been researching this to see when did Karate and Kenpo started using 6 th to 10 th Dan
What u find out?
Chadi, perhaps another video is deserved for the symbology of kodansha belts developed by Jigoro Kano, the red and white and the red. Also, why Jiu-jitsu chose a black and red instead (some use a white/red after the black/red and before the red).
@Jeröme Vrolok Von Alexander I had never heard of it.
Black is all
Lights absorbed hence a master!! That makes more sense to me!!
@@emanueletorregrossa4218 I didn't know that. That's really interesting. It does make sense and I like that idea of black representing the absorption of 'light' i.e. knowledge!!! Nice one!!! I've made a video about Judo Philosophy on my channel. Please check it out and let me know what you think 🙏🏾
I love how you rebeat everthing ❤❤❤❤
Hello :)
There is a mistake about the stripe (bar) for professor or trainee black blelt in BJJ. There is no red or blue stripe, just white. A proffesor will have a withe stripe outside of the red section on the black blet and trainee don't have this "extra" stripe.
Have a nice day :)
Random info--
Master rank in Judo and Karate is 4th degree black belt while 1st to 3rd dan black belt is not.
Master rank in BJJ is 1st degree BB and both Judo and BJJ master rank takes 15+ years at the very least.
A lot of people who bring up the fact that BJJ black belts beat Judo black belts easily without realizing its not even the same ranking system. Which contributes to the myth that BJJ BB are better then Judo BB. lol
That's is a really good point. It takes way longer to get awarded a BJJ black belt. I've been doing BJJ for 8 years and I'm still a purple belt 😂. So, you're right, they can't be compared. I've made a video about Judo Philosophy on my channel. Please check it out and let me know what you think 🙏🏾
@@martialartsaddict9966 that's not my point...lol master rank in judo and BJJ takes the same amount of time. And judo black belt is not an advance or master rank while In bJJ black belt is. They simply use a different ranking system. But people seem to think black belt is a master rank in Asian systems which is a misconception by media. Lol
@@teovu5557 Yeah, I get you. People automatically think that a black belt means you're a master. I don't even think that you can be termed 'Sensei' until you've reached 3rd Dan in a lot of martial arts. Technically, 'Shihan' is really the first 'Master' grade, which is usually when you receive a 6th Dan. That can take over 20 years to attain.
@@martialartsaddict9966 yes, you know what ur talking about. I'm bad at explaining things but you worded it very very well!
@@teovu5557 😂We got there in the end😂
when your sensei uses a old belt system and you have a white beldt for two years 😀
I was a BJJ white belt for three years 😂!!! I used to feel embarrassed walking past the karate class who had all achieved their black belts in that time. I used to want to say to them "BJJ's different! It takes forever to get graded! It's not that I'm rubbish! Honest!!!"😂. I've made a video about Jigoro Kano's philosophy of randori on my channel. Very interesting thanks 👍
One question, what is the music name? Thanks
Can shodan promote other students in judo or does it have to be nidan ?

At the Judo classes I went to by the time I was in elementary school, I remember seeing Red belts. If I remember correctly, they were in between green and blue. But there were no purple belts.
So I'm thinking the red belt at my school might actually have been in between blue and brown, making them the straight equivalent to purple in the ranking described in that part of the video.
Aside from that, the ranking of the belts was the same.
In the UK, the first graded belt is a red belt. I think that kids begin their judo training as a red belt. I'm not sure if the BJA has changed that now. I've made a video about Judo Philosophy on my channel. Please check it out and let me know what you think 🙏🏾
@@martialartsaddict9966 That's interesting. I learned my Judo in Portugal, and I remember my instructor referred to it as Something-I-Cant-Remember Judo... I wish I remembered what sort of Judo it was, but unfortunately I don't.
I do remember my instructor expressing his dislike for the 3 seconds rule of the IJF. I also remember that once the Randori went to the ground - and provided it wasn't by means of an Ippon - we could not get back up any "higher" than on our knees.
That's pretty much all I remember from what made that sort of Judo different from the mainstream IJF one of the time.
Checking your video now!
@@jeanackle Nice one!!!
I would think Go is popular enough to be called by name lol, but the IBJJF system adopted a red and white belt like Judo's between their 'coral' belt and the regualr black belt.
Chadi, help me answer this question: what color was the belt Jigoro Kano wore when practising with their students? I'd say it was Black, but perhaps you can find some evidence.
No covering the recent ijf world tour? season before the Olympics
Why I don’t see legs lock in modern judo no more? Or am I wrong???
Illegal in modern Judo competition. A great shame
An high ranking judoka told me that the colours came from Kano's interest in the colours of the Olympic banner, Kano was a great supporter of the Olympic movement.
Is that for real!!! I've never heard that before. I'm gonna look into that! I've made a video about Jigoro Kano's philosophy of randori, on my channel. Please check it out and let me know what you think 🙏🏾
He lied to you, kano didnt invent the kyu color system, it was a french judo teacher
Where did the purple and brown belt come from?
In Japan there are dan grades for calligraphy
It would be great if you could elaborate on this. I've made a video about Judo Philosophy on my channel. Please check it out and let me know what you think 🙏🏾
In Pakistan, we still use Purple belt in Judo.
Is it the grade before brown belt? I'm pretty sure I remember it being used in the UK in the 80s. I could be wrong though. I've made a video about Judo Philosophy on my channel. Please check it out and let me know what you think 🙏🏾

You know your stuff, Judo and BJJ
I agree. Places charge, make money from testing for the belts and now different colored stripes on the belt tips.
@@Jr-qo4ls the places that charge for gradings are almost always mcdojos, not bjj nor judo.
@@sliderx1897 the problem is when the grades are unrelated to performance , like useless fat masters and kid black belts.Doesnt happen in real combat sport arts like judo and bjj, more a tkd and karate issue.
id hate to train under that master. ill be so mentally broken and negative after that sesh
Impressive
Wonderful footage of the child practicing.
I thought the coloured belt system was invented in the UK and later, was spread to France via visiting Judo master? That isn't true?
That cause before BJJ had black they were only 3 belts white blue and navy blue
See even you left out the point system that is used to measure the skills learned for each judoka in kodakan.
Interesting. In Okinawan karate, there are white, green, and brown belts in the lower ranks, black belt for 1-9 dan, and a single red belt 10th dan per style. I'm pretty sure this pre-dates Japanese karate and judo
Nope.... Colored belt ranking system were first introduced by Kano Sensei, in Judo.
Sorry ... ?! 🙄 🤷🏻♂️
No it doesn't. It started in judo
The Okinawan karate styles didn't originally have coloured belts. They adopted this after Kano's introduced it. I don't see how the amount of time to reach a black belt matters. Combining all sounds unnecessary. Try to learn one or two to start with and make it sustain. If you would like to combine try MMA.
Great insight, Thank you for the brief history of belts. Yes, Helio's belt was "Navy" not "Blue". The Valente's (BJJ) still do it this way (valentebrothers.com/our-story/). Thanks for not going too much down the rabbit hole on BJJ belts, there is too much to it. Thanks.
What's wrong with that? Stop being butthurt and jealous of BJJs popularity
