Great video! Mine was an extreme case in which the battery had swollen so badly that the trackpad couldn't even click, the casing had become very hot and worse, the pressure had pushed the trackpad upwards to the point of cracking off a nearby splinter of the surrounding casing. It didn't stop there either: this was a second-hand machine and upon opening up, I found that although I could remove all screws surrounding the battery itself, the threads of the two screws fixing its connector cable to the rest of the Mac were so badly perished (presumably due to earlier meddling by previous owners), that there was no way of removing them. I was so worried about the risk of fire in my absence, I'm afraid I resorted to brute force (I really wouldn't recommend this, the batteries are volatile) and wrenched the battery away, which although it broke part of the housing (meaning the Mac will probably never be able to have a battery again!) DID solve the problem! The trackpad has retracted back to the correct depth, is now fully usable and contrary to advice given in other forms, I see no deterioration in speed or function, in fact I would say it is now performing more healthily than before..so just to reassure everyone, if it has to come to it, there IS life without a battery at all! :D
This was awesome! I just fixed my MacBook using your video as a guide. Luckily my trackpad wasnt completely broken but it was severely bulging and the metal bracket was bent on one side. I guess maybe I shouldn't have ignored the warning to replace the battery a couple of months ago... Whoops! ;) Thanks again!
@@katzy_1787 I'm pretty sure I ordered mine from iFixit. There might have been cheaper options but it came with the little toolkit and the batteries had decent reviews. It got shipped super fast as well.
Excellent guide. Just cannibalised one to fix the other - both older MacBooks and otherwise going to be recycled, but this has given me a breather until the new generation of MacBooks come out. Thanks!
7:20 To keep the trackpad centered, i use a small piece of sticky tape to hold the trackpad in place, it works quite well actually with all models of macbook
Didn't understand the part about "disconnect the cable master race." Could you elaborate please. I have an early 2011 Macbook Pro 13" that just suffered the same fate as the one you fixed in the video. I need to purchase a trackpad to replace mine and I want to make sure I buy the right one. Can it be any size and model year MB Pro trackpad between 2010 and 2012 or does it have to be model year and size specific? Are there any other considerations I need to take into account before purchasing? Thank you!
Thanks for this video...exactly what I needed to know as found this had happened to me. Where would you recommend buying a replacement battery from in the UK? I have a MBP 15" early 2011. Also...do I need specific type of screwdrivers to remove all the screws? I have some that are small but not sure if there's a particular type of screw fitted or are they all phillips? Thanks again.
Great video. Thank you. Why did both the old and new battery have a warning label not to remove the battery? Are they any special precautions to take because of that warning label?
Great video - I have a MacBook Pro 15" October 2010 - bulging is so bad the loser cover has popped off at least one screw. In your opinion what's the chances it's fixable? Also do you recommend a source for a new battery/trackpad? Any help appreciated!
Hey this is a good video, but you totally skipped over the part how to disconnect the part that’s wires , I’m stuck on that part . Don’t want to damage . HELP 😧
(I know I'm late, sorry.) If you mean a battery expanded for you too and pushed out the trackpad, the only way to know is to test. Kind of similar case but my brother's battery expanded in his Lenovo and it cracked the case and pushed out the trackpad which wasn't working, but once we removed the battery it started working again. His was plastic not glass but if it's not cracked you should still try
Hello, nice video! I´ve got a macbook pro mid 2010 with the same issue, I tried plugging it without a new bettery and it is not wokring, does it need the battery to close the circuit or something? Thanks!!
Adamant IT very interesting, thank you for your video on this. Glad I got this taken care of & glad it wasn’t too dangerous. I had a couple stripped screws holding my battery in so that was fun ha.
Hi, I have this problem too and plan to fix it by following your video, but also I have a problem where my 2010 MacBook Pro randomly heats up, uses the fan at full blast and restarts it’s self roughly every 20> minutes. Apple wouldn’t fix it because my computer is too old and it’s a liability. Do you know how I would fix this?
I’m probably gonna fix mine. It’s not nearly as bad as yours, like not cracked or anything, but it is bulging quite a bit. Hopefully this will help with the computer overall
Yeah but on mine, the battery expansion is so bad that it has jammed two of the screws (just above the battery) in place and trying to get them out has broken three electrical Phillips screwdrivers!!
The rear of your MacBook Pro has the details of the model. In my case a late 2011 A1286 MBP. Just search eBay for the model number. For the battery, my battery model number was A1382. Beware though there are a number of different battery ratings. Mine stated 77.5wH and 10.95v which is roughly 7100mAH. The cheaper ones are only 5200mAH which won't give you as much life. Try and find the 77.5wH one for maybe an extra £10 GBP. Mine cost £27.
Hey, I've been having an issue with my trackpad lately (Macbook pro late 2011 13 inch) I've noticed the tracking or when you direct the cursor to a specific area, the cursor glitches a little bit. Nothing bad, It is just noticeable. If not attended to, would it become more of an issue in the future? Also would you need a new trackpad for that issue? I've noticed you said to clean around the trackpad bay area, but would there be other reasons to cause this?
Thank you so much for this video!! However, when I put the trackpad back in, it does not stay up, which means it stays in "clicked" position, unless I put the laptop upside down. And it's not because of the battery. That did not happen before I opened up the laptop. Do you know what I did wrong?
@@Adamant_IT Thank you for the reply! Yes I did try that, it makes the difference when the laptop is upside-down. But when I turn the laptop over, the trackpad simply collapses down...
Can a faulty battery 🔋 make the MacBook freeze constantly? I’ve noticed my mac has started bulging in recent months and it does not sit flat on the desk anymore. It’s also freezing more and more as time goes on. Around Christmas time it would freeze up after a couple hours a few times a week. But not it’s freezing up on me every 5 minutes and the only way to get it off is to do a hard restart holding the power button. Is the faulty battery causing the issues??
Adamant IT will do, thanks so much for your reply! I appreciate it so much! I can’t find anyone else with such issues. Its not visible to the eyes but if you put the mac on a table it does not sit flat and the back is lower to the desk than the front is. But ya it’s been freezing more and more since Christmas. It’s at the point it seems to freeze every 5 minutes (for some reason it works if I run screen recording). I’ve ordered a new battery and a new bottom and new screws too with air cleaning can. Hopeful they’ll arrive soon this week.

The track pad is bent up and sticking out on one side and is stuck in on the other side and I can't close the lid BC of it and the screen is broke anyway I could fix it??
Hey Adamant, here in argentina we don't have a lot of macs. The 99% of notebooks are not mac and have a external battery. I never see this type of damage. ¿Do you think it's a fail of Apple this type of issue? ¿All mac's suffer from this problem when the life of the battery runs out?
I think it's okay to admit it's a design flaw. I can guarantee when they built these computers, they did not say to themselves, let's make sure the trackpad malfunctions or even breaks when the battery cells fail. Let's make sure the entire case comes apart (see many photos online). Apple did not want these things to happen. If it was not intended, then it is/was a flaw. Search online. You will find MANY complaints about premature swollen batteries in Macbook Pros. Admitting this is not a good thing will not take away from your support of Apple products. It's just the truth.
+Anthony Mitch Apple are very shrewd in their business model. I'm sure they must be aware of this issue. Most people will go to an Apple Store to fix this issue only to be told an exorbitant price forcing them to instead just purchase a new laptop.

No, it is the screws on the COVER which have jammed, given how tiny electrical screwdrivers are.
