Thank you so much for this technique! but the chord progression has confused me! basically the chords must be played on Cmaj7 scale must be : Dm7 - G7 - Cmaj7 , but intead you played : Fmaj 7- Bdim7- Em7 !!! does this mean a 2- 5 - 1 progression on a C maj scale can be performed on all modes ? Thank you so much
@@mangualc yesss . I tried to search on this, I end up on course about voicing. There is a type of chord voicing, they call rootless chord voicing. But honestly, I had the same idea in mind, how can we play on the same 9th chord rootless but still not falling on another 7th chord .
Note.. This is only for those who are serious about learning Jazz. This is not for beginners. I will try to give some help. This may help those who are struggling. Rootless chords used to confuse me. I started piano in 72. So it is fairly common to be confused here. Unfortunately.. I have to go into detail. I will be showing a Georgia version that took a while to learn. Basically the base player in a jazz combo would be playing the base note. One song comes to mind.. (Georgia)..One version of the song ..has a 1 7 3 6 2 5 which is very cool and another version had a 1 3 6 2 5.. They were often done in different keys. As we are are all at various levels. I like to play the song in the key of F. For clarity. The 1-7 scale degrees of F are: F G A Bb C D E .. As stated above..it Georgia can be done as a 173625.. Fmaj7 Emin7b5 A7b9 Dmin7( I don't remember..it seems it is a regular Dmin7.. that is the 1 7 3 6 portion. So usually I play a F maj7 FACE then go down a half step and make chord Emin7b5.. Also called a a E half dim.7. ( E G Bb D). (1 b3 b5 b7) Now that sounds fairly 👍 good. Minimal movement of the right ✋ hand. Now the next chord can be rootless A7b9 as above..that chord is played a modification of the rootless Emin7b5 ( above)Only one note the pinky is moved down to C# (E G Bb D) is moved to (E G Bb C#).. Note that this has no mention of an A.. it a rootless chord..From A this is (5 b7 b9 3) I'll stop there. There are various reasons this is done this way. I covered 1 7 3 chords. Sincerely hope this helped.
The way I've always understood it is: it is assumed that, in a (jazz) performance context, the bass player will take care of the root note, which makes it unnecessary for the pianist to 'double' it and instead enables him/her to add other, more interesting notes to the chord in question.
Pretty sure this would be a great little exercise to go around the circle of 4ths doing to get used to your 2-5-1 in all keys... 🤪 thanks for your videos bro!
Hello. Getting started. Please explain when I would apply 251 licks? What are the assumptions? Does a song have to have a 251 chord progression before inserting this type of lick? And what about the melody of a song....how does this lick relate to the existing melody of any song?
i think he's playing the 13th and the 9th with the rootless G7 and inverted lol ......if that's what he's playing he should really let people know that lol
Hi there! Could you please make a video on how to use 4 chords on a scale! I mean How can I play chords one by one on one scale.... Sorry for my English! 😪
Awesome Simon, as usual ;-)) ... thank you so much for being you :-) ... hey I'm wondering if you're interested in dissecting and teaching the Ray Charles tune 'What'd I say" ... I know it's not where you're playing/teaching right now .. but I also know you'd make way more sense of it than every other you-tuber I've been able to find. In fact I haven't actually been able to find anyone who explains the entire song ... everyone seems to focus on just the chorus lick only. Just a thought ... have a great time in Spain
I'm a little confused because the last chord you're playing with your left hand looks more like an E minor 7 to me than a Cmaj7. It looks like it could be a Cmaj7 if it was rootless and with a 9 thrown in. Can you clarify that?
Its a Cmaj7 with a 9 , and No root note. So E G B D, the D is the 9th We leave out the root note, because the bass will cover that for us (either a bass, or the lower register of the piano) A ton of 2 5 1 progressions use 9ths and 13ths.
Good foundational jazz lesson.. I had a jazz teacher back when dinosaurs roamed the earth. kidding ..not that old. He used to write out the notes for me in pencil on blank sheet music. It just occured to me..I have reams of half empty sheets.. I can use those when trying to learn new licks. I can make notes and observations. Writing little dots as eighth notes. I can fill im the rest later. Its study..not a finished product.. just tie the triplet notes together and put a 3 above it.
What other chord progressions do you want to see some handy licks over?
Could I see a lick over the long form 2-5-1

Not until you said that and then....yes :-)
Me to lol
Me too 😂😂😂
I started understanding how to create licks. Great! Thanks, you explain things well.
Awesome! Glad I could be of assistance :)
This progression increased my street cred.
This sounds great, I hadn't heard of this before so thank you for teaching it. I'll need to incorporate it into my piano playing. It's really catchy!
I watch your videos all the time, they really help out alot. thank you for all your hard work making and sharing these.
*I see a Pig in the table,It is so cute and i like it* !

He played them inverted and without the root. Which I don't understand how chords can be called what they are without the root

yeah the explanation would have made more sense with the roots included. I’m glad im not the only one who struggled with this.

dry509 Great question.
But you have to admit, it’s pretty cool as it is!
When your improvising over a 251 chord progression, you can play this lick over the top.
Dude you awesome

Why is there an E on your inverted rootless G7 please explain huhu
i think he's playing the 13th and the 9th with the rootless G7 and inverted lol ......if that's what he's playing he should really let people know that lol
Did you change your studio recording location😄

Thanks Freddy! Appreciate it as always :) I'll certainly look into it and see if it's something that would be suitable to do!

You completely right, it's a rootless Cmaj9 :)
PianoPig Thanks!
Can someone explain me what is a lick in french
I love this channel
thanks bud
No worries!
Why the Cmaj7 doesn’t have a C and has a D instead? Wouldn’t Cmaj7 be C E G B?
It's just a rootless voicing. I'm essentially just playing a Cmaj9 without the root note.
Its a Cmaj7 with a 9 , and No root note. So E G B D, the D is the 9th
We leave out the root note, because the bass will cover that for us (either a bass, or the lower register of the piano)

Isnt that Dm9 you are playing?
Its a rootless voicing of Cmaj7
