Wonderful tribute to Akira Toriyama. And a lot of Goku/DBZ nods in how the monk subclass can be played. I would definitely say somebody could make upgrades to allow for making your own Kamehameha.
Ask if your DM will let to change the AOE of your "sun ball" to allow other shapes (for things like the Final Flast, Special Beam Cannon, Kamehameha, etc.)
I have a Sun Soul in my game and we buffed the hell out of her. The biggest thing is just letting her use her Sun Bolts interchangeably with her unarmed strikes, which is how it should've been all along. That, and QOL changes with Ki Points so she has more and spends fewer.
Rest in peace Toriyama. He will be forever missed. Let us honor him by playing the ki shooting punchy boi in our next campaigns, even if it weaker than most. But such a challenge never stopped Goku, and it never stopped Toriyama.
I think one of the main issues I've seen with Monk is that they're tight casted, not that their theme is bad but it doesn't get room for just good dumb ideas. WoC making Monk Subclasses: "Hey, this is a popular anime thing, we can do that!" WoC making Bladesinging: "What if we made a wizard... But sword?" Not that it's a terrible thing, but I feel like it sort of gimps Monks. You know? If there's anything I learned from Anime, namely Akira Toriyama (RIP), is sometimes you just need to do something dumb and fun. You sometimes need to teach a dinosaur to ride a ball.
The next time a player brings a Sun Soul Monk, I’ll have a pair of monsters that would say these lines: “Vegeta, what does the scouter say about his power levels?” “It’s over nine thousand!” “What!? Nine thousand!? There’s no way that can be right!”
I never watched Dragon Ball so I never caught that this was a reference to the series when I made one lol, my Sun Soul Monk is a Warforged who creates these little explosion motes in his body. I recognize the love everyone has for the show and its late creator, hope those who were touched by it are doing ok, rest in peace a legend.
YMBA: ready for that nostalgia? *Rock the dragon doesn’t play* Me: oh hell no! What in the…. YMBA: no no no, I said the REAL nostalgia! *Rock the dragon plays* Me: ooohhh yeah baby that’s the stuff
Soooooo fun story, "Rock the Dragon" was made by Shuki Levy and Haim Saban. You know the guys who brought us Power Rangers. Yes 90s kids, they did make the soundtrack to your entire childhood.
Sun Soul, like Drunken Master and Astral Self, allows the Monk to do what it's supposed to: Attack a lot and move fast. The other Monk subclasses aren't good at this, mostly because they tend to rely too heavily on Ki Points for their features. These three give you better options that let you attack without having to worry about opportunity attacks afterward.

The problem with this subclass (and most other monk subclasses) is that it's still built on the monk base class. Slap the sun soul abilities onto a barbarian and _then_ you're cooking with gas. Add the Radiant Sun Bolt as an option while raging, make Searing Arc Strike and Searing Sunburst PB/LR and 1/SR abilities, add Sun Shield while raging with a damage based on CON (which would make the level 20 capstone even better since it could be basically always on), give the Sun Soul barbarian a monk-like unarmed damage progression and BA unarmed attack if they are not wielding a weapon or a shield in their off-hand, and you have a Goku class. RIP Toriyama. Fun fact, Dragon Ball is responsible for cartoons receiving an age rating in Hungary. Before it started airing in the weekend matinees in the late '90s, the basic assumption was that cartoons were for children. Parents complaining about it led to Dragon Ball receiving a 14+ rating (later changed to a 12+ when the rating system was refined) and being removed from the matinee, to the chagrin of 10-year-olds who woke up early every Saturday and Sunday to watch Goku charge up the Spirit Bomb for another episode.
please talk abought the zeal cleric, its from the technically official Plane Shift - Amonkhet, and I feel like more people need to know abought it because its like the coolest mix of war and tempest cleric
The only thing i dont get with Monk and especially their Subclasses For some reason their features is just, something other class get earlier but Weaker Like Sun Soul Monk get esentially Firebolt and Burning Hand at level 3 and 5, a Full Caster can get it at Level 1 and they do it better Their Capstone(Shared with Sorcerer and Warlock) is also something that is obtainable by things like Fighter MUCH earlier Their Ki and Martial Dice also need to scale better, also need a Feature where their Martial Weapons Magical Property can affect their Fist when at certain level
Wish the Sun Monk had the Sunbeam spell as the final feature, it also shed sunlight for the saiyan effect and at level 17 it wouldn't be that broken, they could also have given the monk a beam line attack that uses Ki points to power it instead of that burning hands thing, like they reworked the basic attacks and give them a radiant fireball, why stop at burning hands...
Today, I finished a homebrew Monk subclass that is everything the Sun Soul and original Way of the Four Elements set out to be. You see, I just gave the Monk formal spellcasting. The flavor text is about meditating and connecting with the weave of magic on a spiritual level. I probably need to downsize the spell list, but the monk is a prepared spells caster, and can use Ki points like sorcery points. I think it’s super cool, I think it keeps the flavor of the monk, and I think it’s hilarious how by just formally casting spells it became everything the Sun Soul and 4 Elements set out to be.
R.I.P. Toriyama, I didn't watch much Dragonball, but you definitely inspired the mangaka that I read today, and I honestly feel the world would feel less connected if he didn't make Dragonball
Your gonna take tht yamcha slander back good sir. I saw Yamcha try to throw hands and sun soul is best way of showing how the basic Humans are really crazy strong compared to the normal humans
I like to change the damage types of the abilities to create other elemental monks Storm Soul: Lightning and Thunder damage Corruption Soul: Poison and Acid Moon Soul: Cold and Necrotic etc.
You're better off taking 5 levels of Astral Self Monk and the rest on Stars Druid to have a Super Saiyan 1 and 2 forms, in which you can actually blast your enemies.
I will die on the hill that Sun Soul Monk needs their own version of the Cloud Somersault. And if we're getting into the need for more firepower, maybe a few more Sunbeams wouldn't hurt, it's kind of embarrassing that the Light Domain Cleric gets more blasts in it than the Goku subclass.
I played a Sun Soul monk for about 2 years and it was by far my favorite DND character and campaign I've played. Tho I do agree the subclass really isn't that great. Most encounters I forgot I even had the sun beam abilities
RIP Akira Toriyama Also, I think changing Sun Shield to Sun Aura, giving it buff properties similar to the Bladesong, and then giving Sun Aura's abilities a boost at later levels (similar to Super Saiyan 1, 2, and 3) would be awesome. Though I don't play DnD, so I have no idea if what I said is truly viable or not. Food for thought, though.
RIP Akira Toriyama, overall the problem with the monk is that it's just not that good at being used to roleplay as shonen anime protagonist because the class actively discourages you from using strength as your primary ability score. It's a real damned if you do, damned if you don't situation where the designers didn't want to make the monk dependent on a third stat in addition to dex and wisdom, so instead of playing as an extremely muscular dude, the class asks you to make your character's strength as low as feasibly possible and then pretend to still be a extremely muscular dude. you could try playing a barbarian with the unarmed fighting style, but it would require a hefty amount of reflavoring to turn your rage into martial arts (unless you wanna say that your rage is actually your super saiyan transformation, but that's a whole new can of worms)
Honestly, I hope Sun Soul gets a rework. Even just taking the new 4 Elements Monk from One DnD and making it deal Radiant damage would be a better Goku than this one.
This video is more of a tribute because of the passing of Toriyama friend, that is why there is no mention of JoJo just DBZ. As a fellow JoJo fan I think there's another monk video that's literally just a JoJo reference.
You know what? If you think of this as a fighting game subclass it works better. The Burning Hands can be your super. Spending a Ki point to throw an extra projectile is a fighting game mechanic called Meter Burn. And the Sun Shield can be punishing someone after blocking a hit.
yeah sun soul is one i want to be good so badly, because it's dragon ball man, but yeah it's just not designed well. Like it's up there with my disappointment with in Kensei not being a katana wielding samurai "sword saint", but there at least it is a good historical accurate samurai archer (especially with Tasha's optional features).

R.I.P Akira Toriyama
I am the biggest sad 😢
If you spent your entire life crafting one of the world’s most memorable works of entertainment and becoming a legend, you might be Akira Toriyama.
RIP Toriyama. I’m on 133 of my rewatch of DBZ so this really put a smile on my face considering the recent bad news. Thanks.
I’m actually playing a Sunsoul human that is a tribute to Yuske Urameshi from YuYuHakusho. Our tiefling is a Bladesinger Wizard who is basically Hiei.
Wonderful tribute to Akira Toriyama. And a lot of Goku/DBZ nods in how the monk subclass can be played. I would definitely say somebody could make upgrades to allow for making your own Kamehameha.

I'm using the bone wizards version of monk I'm enjoying the qol changes and my player plays Goku well
Rest in peace Toriyama. He will be forever missed. Let us honor him by playing the ki shooting punchy boi in our next campaigns, even if it weaker than most. But such a challenge never stopped Goku, and it never stopped Toriyama.
R.I.P Toriyama. May otherworld welcome you.
An autognome sun soul monk is just mega man, change my mind
I think one of the main issues I've seen with Monk is that they're tight casted, not that their theme is bad but it doesn't get room for just good dumb ideas.

I literally just login to youtube once every week just to watch your videos. I love you man
Tongue _of_ the sun and moon.
Oh... I've been on the internet for too long.
This video is better than the entire sub-class
The next time a player brings a Sun Soul Monk, I’ll have a pair of monsters that would say these lines:

Shine on you blatant references to a formerly even more blatant reference to a monkey king. Shine on.
May you rest in peace Mr. Toriyama
Props for Rock The Dragon
NEW YMBA VIDEO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dude these are genuinely the highlight of my week
Mr.Popo is a Djinn, and God combo from inspiration.
R.I.P we power up everyday in your memory
RIP Akira Toyiyama. Thanks you for all you’ve done ❤️
My monkbarian was a zealot barbarian/ sun soal str based character and I had a blast.
Soooooo fun story, "Rock the Dragon" was made by Shuki Levy and Haim Saban. You know the guys who brought us Power Rangers. Yes 90s kids, they did make the soundtrack to your entire childhood.
came out amazing. wonderful pseudo tribute while keeping your original style.
man the nostalgia when the opening hit...i need to rewatch this show lol
Yes! The REAL nostalgia! Always hype!
As someone who played D20 modern the mention of it in the ad read triggered my flight or fight response lol

R.I.P. Akira Toriyama. The GOAT and Godfather of modern shonen.

I may not be the best monk but its a good tribute to a legend :) great video

R.I.P. Akira Toriyama.

Mr.Popo is a djinn (a genie/demon from Arabian tales and legends).
R.I.P. Toriyama, I didn't watch much Dragonball, but you definitely inspired the mangaka that I read today, and I honestly feel the world would feel less connected if he didn't make Dragonball
Great video. Thanks for the shout-out.
Love your stuff too bud. Reach out if you'd ever love to chat dnd!
Rest in peace
Sun Soul Monk + Scourge aasimar= You can go Super Saiyan
Your gonna take tht yamcha slander back good sir. I saw Yamcha try to throw hands and sun soul is best way of showing how the basic Humans are really crazy strong compared to the normal humans
0:34 not really
0:37 HELL YEAH! 👍
I like to change the damage types of the abilities to create other elemental monks
Storm Soul: Lightning and Thunder damage
Corruption Soul: Poison and Acid
Moon Soul: Cold and Necrotic
etc.
R.I.P Akira “The GOAT” Toriyama
As for changes, there’s a revised version of the subclass on gm binder
R . I .P Akira Toriyama you will never be forgotten
RIP Akira Toriyama
I have a Ranger in a campaign, about to hit lvl 3. Wanna hear some more ranger takes.
Take Gloom Stalker and become what The Darkness fears.
Of course YMBA is a DBZ guy. That absolutely tracks.
I caught the stealth DBZA clip, too. Lol
If i were to request a subclass onto a poll, i would like it to be the Path of the Depths Barbarian
For Toriyama.
You're better off taking 5 levels of Astral Self Monk and the rest on Stars Druid to have a Super Saiyan 1 and 2 forms, in which you can actually blast your enemies.
Sun Soul is such a cool concept but badly needs buffed
I will die on the hill that Sun Soul Monk needs their own version of the Cloud Somersault. And if we're getting into the need for more firepower, maybe a few more Sunbeams wouldn't hurt, it's kind of embarrassing that the Light Domain Cleric gets more blasts in it than the Goku subclass.
Rest in peace Toriyama we'll see you on the other side one these days.
I don’t know how you make a character based on Dragon Ball and it’s still so underpowered
Street Fighter, which actually has all the abilities at the appropriate scale unlike DBZ: Am I a joke to you?
You should do the shadow monk next for the next monk ya do.
You gotta multi class with zealot barb to get all that extra damage
what is the scene 5:20 from
..........dragon ball
Searing Sunburst feels flat worse than Fireball, doubly since it’s a Con save. Edit: I was right. It is, in every way, flat worse.
As another dnd/video game/anime fan this is one of my favorites subclasses even through i agree some of the abilities need work
We need some kind of chef alchemist Halfling.
I played a Sun Soul monk for about 2 years and it was by far my favorite DND character and campaign I've played. Tho I do agree the subclass really isn't that great. Most encounters I forgot I even had the sun beam abilities
Rest in peace akira toriyama
RIP Akira Toriyama
Also, I think changing Sun Shield to Sun Aura, giving it buff properties similar to the Bladesong, and then giving Sun Aura's abilities a boost at later levels (similar to Super Saiyan 1, 2, and 3) would be awesome.
Though I don't play DnD, so I have no idea if what I said is truly viable or not. Food for thought, though.
RIP´Akira Toriyama... Thank you for your creations,
Goku is a bad dad? He teleported from the afterlife to sucker punch an opponent of his son...
Still waiting and hoping for video on you might be a zealot barbarian
MUFFIN BUTTON!!!!!!!!!!!!
R.I.P
I live in too much of a ratass hood for you to have me crying when I'm on a walk brother but damn Goodwork on this one
Wonder how long until toei hits this video with a copyright claim
R.I.P Akira Toriyama 😢
Can you do one for Mastermind rouge please
I could have sworn the sun soul could use their powers to cast Scorching Ray
Best paired with Aasimar race and 3 levels in Zealot Barbarian.
RIP Akira Toriyama,
overall the problem with the monk is that it's just not that good at being used to roleplay as shonen anime protagonist because the class actively discourages you from using strength as your primary ability score. Yea my kids are gonna watch DB when I get old enough to finally have them lol
Honestly, I hope Sun Soul gets a rework. Even just taking the new 4 Elements Monk from One DnD and making it deal Radiant damage would be a better Goku than this one.
The lore text for the sub class states that you get power from the sun and there is no Hamon reference. I am disappointed.
I believe that's the Astral Self
@@j.bat.8235 yeah, but I was hoping for a Hamon shout out at least
This video is more of a tribute because of the passing of Toriyama friend, that is why there is no mention of JoJo just DBZ. As a fellow JoJo fan I think there's another monk video that's literally just a JoJo reference.

Ok, love the videos, but the Sword art online scene at 5:28 that you like to use really hurts my eyes every time I see it.
Mr. Popo is obviously Baba Bhairav, Mahakala himself, the guardian of the Dharma.
Does the subclass come with two turns of grunting as you power up? Not a subclass I even remember exists.
Many of the level abilities sound like the OG monk features of 1e. 🤔
yeah sun soul is one i want to be good so badly, because it's dragon ball man, but yeah it's just not designed well.
Like it's up there with my disappointment with in Kensei not being a katana wielding samurai "sword saint", but there at least it is a good historical accurate samurai archer (especially with Tasha's optional features).
I'm genuinely upset with how much this makes me want to play a monk.
Was a good video untill the final moment when it became a great video, hit the feels
Mix this with the soul knife rouge!
I'm a blue dragonborn (uses fire element) sun soul just to make flamedramon from digimon 0.2 😂
My only criticism of this subclass is you DON'T have a Kamehameha
