This is so cool to be able to change the donors and members in flight and not just in the editor! Going to be a must for flying MP, can't wait to get my hands on it!
It's another one of the "Oh my god, this is so over my head, I can't wait to figure out how to make this useful" features. I really need to get online more often.
Big bonus for game, and as was said by someone last week on the F-16 videos, while it looks simple, this represents a lot of programming work from the ED team. Very exciting stuff, even if it's not the sexy stuff.
Funny, I am re-learning the FA-18 after delving into some other modules and decided to mess with the Datalink in the mission editor just today, and this video comes out!
Hey Wags, can you please match the cursor speed of the SA page to the cursor speed of the FCR? (Or visa versa?) The two different speeds are incredibly inconvenient for us when we're trying to set mini stick curves or deadzones.
@bsdude010 Can you post your source that the cursor speed of the FCR and SA/HSI differ from each other this much in the real Hornet? (ED saying "this is the way it is, trust us guys" doesn't count. They got it wrong in the first place as proven by the change in the April patch, which means they might/probably have it wrong again.) I can't find any source confirming that. From what I can dig up, ED increased the speed of the FCR cursor based on a short UA-cam video the community supplied of a cursor moving fast, (which may have been a BIT by the way.) Which video did they base the slow speed of the SA cursor on? And how would they know the operator was pushing the analog TDC to it's full travel range? What possible reason would Boeing/McDD have to design the avionics in that way? It doesn't add up, and I call BS. Even if that is the way it is IRL, 99% of us do not have 1:1 Hornet pits with military grade commercial peripherals. It is unreasonable to not allow the user of the sim to make compromises for functionality. The special features tab for our high fidelity modules are exactly for this kind of thing.
Amazing. However, what will happen in Multiplayer settings when donors and team members might die and respawn regularly? How might those change? Awesome work though!!
This is cool. Makes me hope even harder for changes to the TDC on the hornet to be reverted or sped up on the SA page too, given how awful the SA page is to use with the cursor since the change to the radar cursor speed/
Any further featers we can expect for the Hornet with the Datalink? Probably not in the upcoming OpenBeta right? Can you give us a kind of idea what we can expect? Thanks in advance, wags!
For the old missions, do we need to edit the F18 and F16 groups to have the same datalink that we have today, or we can just leave to use the default values?
am i understanding this correctly? at the moment, all aircraft in the network are donors. with this update you have to choose which aircraft specifically are donors? (like an AWACS) this means i have to edit all my missions
was a donor limitation in the game previously? or was the donor limit already enforced? is boxing donor/team member only available for people who were already one of the two, or can i select anyone with datalink from the sa page?
from my understanding, ALL aircraft in the datalink network have been donors. with this new update you basically have to choose which ones are donors now.
Man, are they ever going to finish this module? How many years has it been? Every time I break it out again, I have new things to learn. Keep up the good work, but is it going to be this way for all the other jets? I got at most another 30 years to live...
In real life the F/A-18A went with the block updates then to F/A-18C then block updates to the Super hornet. RAAF had the (HornetUpGrades) that took a simple F/A-18A to the equilivlant of a late updated F/A-18C with improved ECM and AN/AAQ-28(V) Litening targeting pod with ASRAAM. The Canadians have the Hornet Extension Project of which upgrades the basic hornet to Super hornet capability. This game might emulate some of this. If this game goes to realistic 5th gen like the F-35 then this aircraft is on a constant upgrade from one block to another. Currently if an air force buys into the F-35, they enter in a constant upgrade path. This game has a good future in constant future upgrades, and emulating past conflicts...........hold on😄
Am I being too hopeful in thinking that since DL is being worked on for the Viper and the Hornet, that it might be coming to other platforms as well sooner than I might otherwise have thought...?
Anyone know if they will update the MIDS page also. I mean it shows COARSE SYNC all the time, even though you box NTR which should put it on FINE SYNC basically immediately. Also Link16 seems to show 1-way and it doesnt show 2-way even though you press it. Small things but would be cool if those would change and such. 😊
Excellent Wags, glad to see progress in our loved Hornet. With this Datalink rework, could you tell me if ED plan to reduce the current 12 seconds refresh rate of the fighter link? Thanks.
@@MattWagner What is the difference between a normal friendly datalink contact and a donor ? - I understand that only from members i can see A2A and A2G targets
The question just came up about being able to make a different type of aircraft a member? I guess if two different jets were in a public server and wound up flying together.
Some follow up: Since 2.9 dropped, I did not find a way to change the calsign in cockpit. However, it seem that we can SEE what is our callsign and what is our STN number on the TGT DATA PAGE in the group subsection, without the possibility to change it
Cool stuff. Wondering what happens if a member/donor is shot down, disappears and reappeara due to terrain maskingand so on. When is a donor/member considered to be lost? If we want to reassign donor/member in flight and they are not in our direct vicinity (like on am multiplayer server some buddy joining in a bit later and taking off from your home base ehile you are already further away in your target area), do we have to zoom all the way out and find the corresponding flight in a blip cloud of friendlies? The F16 way of handling this stuff seems to be way more straight forward. There is also a MIDS setting in the UFC via D/L. Is it in any way related to this function?
How does this actually work in DCS? A PPLI should always transmit its data, so will you still see tracks picked up by these friendlies as we have now? (That's what should happen) I suspect not as you created this video and said nothing of MSI. If this function is added correctly, and to our current version of DCS which lacks MSI, nothing will change. "Selecting donor number allows the PPLI track to be a donor for the ownship MSI track files" What you are doing with the donor function, is controlling who on the F/F net is going to contribute to your MSI trackfiles. Maybe it's all correct and you are surprising us with MSI :)
Hey Waaags, sorry to bother, but I've had no luck elsewhere...do you know of any good technical (not biographies/picture books) books about either the legacy hornet or the phantom? Thanks, sorry goodbye
Do you have any news to share on the state of MSI on the hornet? It's one of the major missing features that's supposed to distinguish it from the abilities of say, the F16. Thanks!
What's the interaction the other way around? What happens to the other guys cockpit when you designate them as a memeber/donor. And what determines who is the leader of these flights
As Wags explained in the Viper datalink update video he stated that AWACS are integrated into the Mission Channel instead of the Fighter Channel. AFAIU this is not something you or the mission make will need to fiddle with.
Hey wags nice video ! What would it look like in your cockpit if another pilot assigned you as a member ? I'm guessing for the donors it's just a matter of whose data you want to access but how does it work for members ?
Can we use this new datalink on say a AH64 apache and have it lazer targets for us so we dont have to do so on our own anymore? Would be handy for cas strikes. And then can it also be used vice versa so that we can give waypoint/target data to the apache and have us lazer for it so the apache can fire from cover?
It's like that because there aren't any modern 1st party Full Fidelity red fixed wing aircraft, due to limited public knowledge, and lack of relevant partnerships with ED.
