I think the most notable story about the Jumpstarters is the many cases in conventions of people just, like, dragging out these massive garbage bags full of G1 Jumpstarters of varying condition and selling them off for five bucks or less. They might have been the most overproduced toys in the history of the brand.
@Shield Liger unfortunately, I was born in 88, so, while I had some G2 stuff growing up, Beast Wars was my first real exposure to the franchise. When I said I remember the Jumpstarter garbage bags, it's because that's where I got mine from, as well as a decent Doublecross.
I love background characters like this. Topspin and Twin Twist aren't exactly obscure characters, most fans know them, but they still haven't got to do much. They're like Autobot Reflectors, but without the one-person-army abilities.
They should have used them in the cartoon as characters who remained on Cybertron and had them assist the Autobots whenever they went back to Cybertron on a mission.
I have an interesting story involving my figures. When I got TopSpin (used of course) his pull-back gimmick worked, however whenever he was suppose to jump his legs just slammed onto the surface. Some time later I got Twin Twist that worked just fine so I compared the 2, turns out that Topspins front non-wheel/bump was almost fully rubbed off while TwinTwists was in good condition. So I recreated Topspins using a bit of modeling clay and few layers of epoxy glue and he actually started jumping, maybe even better that Twin Twist. So these may be toys, but there's some high spec enginering going into them.
When you get around to doing the inevitable episode on the Battlechargers, I hope you include the tidbit connecting Runabout and Runamuk to the Throttlebots. All the Throttlebots had the same transformation scheme as the Battlechargers, they just lacked the spring loaded auto transform feature. I always assumed Hasbro engineers just got lazy, but now I'm starting to suspect Diaclone had a hand in the origin of the Throttlebot toys...
@@ls_rus4666 They just started the Legends Universe. The story is finished by the Autobots and Decepticons (Mainly those who stop being evil, including Megatron) coming together with Dai Atlas and his team to fight the bad guys of Zone anime and Return of Convoy book stories (Did you know that Dark Nova is a Vok and that he created Violen Jiger?) to get the Zodiac macguffin, so the Japanese G1 lore ended with Zone (Not helped by the fact that Topspin and Twin Twist became Powered Masters like Dai Atlas and his gang).
Really appreciated this episode. My parents got me twin twist as a child and I had no idea who it was or how it transformed so easily. Had to describe it to a friend years after to learn the name of the transformer I had.
My Dad had a Top Spin and he was my favorite one to play with growing up. Too bad he never got much life outside of a few comic book appearances. It feels like IDW is pretty much the first time a lot of characters get to actually be characters. I'd love to get one of the new toys of him, especially the Titans Return version since it's so close to the original in design.
It would be great to have a speedsters group for a story. Blur, the Jumpstarters, the Battlechargers and the Powerdashers. The Battlechargers betraying the group of course.
I've always had a soft spot for these guys. I vividly remember getting both of them from Tesco back in the day with my birthday money. I love the modern versions too
Ahhh, the memories!! I had Topspin as a kid; ironically, one of my friends had Twin Twist. (Then again, I had Hun-grr & Cutthroat, he had Blot & Sinnertwin, I had Powermaster Optimus Prime, he had Doubledealer, we often wondered if we were brothers or something!!)
I like all the different kinds of basics episodes, but I got to admit the ones where one interesting toy serves as the basis for a whole section are probably my favorites.
My very FIRST Transformers toys were actually Top Spin and Twin Twist. So I find this video to be very important to me as a Transformers fan. Thanks for post this. I wasn't aware of these two being Wreckers. I actually envisioned them as a part of the Wreckers. It's sort of cool to know that my imagination of them being Wreckers actually came to be true.
I had Topspin! It was actually my first Transformer toy ever! It's not fair that the Jumpstarters never appeared in the original animated series! They would have given the Decepticon Battlechargers a serious fight!
Two of my favorites right there. I had the G1 toys as a kid, and pretty much wore them out. I was so happy when they made the Titans Return figures of them. Man, as much negative feedback they got when Optimus was killed off in the 80s movie, they sure didn't shy away from killing anyone and everyone in the comics did they?
Hey Chris wanted to tell you I just recently found your channel and love all of your videos. You’ve single handedly brought me back into the world of the transformers. I was wondering if there was any chance you could do a basics on either Red Alert, Landmine, or Repugnus/The Monster Bots?
My older brother had Topspin back in the 80s and gave it to me when he "aged-out" of Transformers in the 90s. I didn't have Twin-Twist until I bought both of their Titans Return toys.
Thank you Chris. This was a very pleasant surprise. I'm pleased to report my Topspin toy is still alive and flipping 35 years later. Sometimes he even lands on his feet!
Wow. Topspin and Twin Twist became some of my favorites after I read Last Stand of the Wreckers..... and my wife and I got married the day you released this video. We thought getting married on a leap year day would be cool..... I like Twin Twist more.
I got Twin Twist when I was a kid and, being the littler bugger I was, got sick that I couldn't move the legs back and forth individually like I wanted to I broke the piece that kept them together. Of course, I didn't realized that was important for the gimmick but I treated it as if the leg that stayed forward was a battering ram. No longer have the original I had but about a year ago, I saw the g1 toy in my buddy's shop so I bought him for the collection, also has the broken piece like what I had so it fits.
2:23 "For unknown reasons" -ugh, And I wanted to know WHY they were excluded most of all! Topspin was the first transformer my younger brother got, and he was always bummed that it wasn't in the cartoon.
Yeah, there's a lot of characters who got toys but never appeared in the cartoon, but usually there was a clear cause-and-effect. Mostly Takara not owning the rights to them, like Roadbuster and Whirl and the Deluxe Insecticons, or not being available at mass retail, like the Powerdashers and the Omnibots, who were mailaways. But the Jumpstarters were owned by Takara and definitely showed up at mass retail, so there doesn't seem to be a reason.

As a little kid here in Mexico, I had a Topspin that, while not as cool as my Starscream toy, sure did see way more playing hours.
Given how mass-produced these guys were, I always thought it was weird how they never showed up in the cartoon. Two other bits of Jumpstarter trivia, their images were reversed on their tech specs (initially anyway, I think this was eventually fixed?), and their tech specs were slightly smaller than everyone else's because of the size of their boxes. Excellent video as always Chris!

I had a broken Topspin as a kid, but as it was the 80’s and pre-internet, I never knew his name. I just called him Barrage. He had a gaping hole in his chest, so he was always among the first to die when fighting Decepticons in my bedroom.
I still have both from 1985 & was mad they weren't in the show. I have the new ones too Titans Return had to get them. I really like your page like you tell the history👍
This was awesome! I'm surprised you didn't mention how they are the absolute KINGS of KO toys, there is an obscene amount of very interesting variations on their mould, I didn't have the originals growing up, but had at the very least 4 unique ripoffs of them!
I loved Topspin so much when I used to own him. I don't remember him landing on his feet very much, but I loved his vehicle mode!
Topspin me right round, baby, right round
Like a wrecker baby right round round round
