Something that helped me a lot mentally before a fight that I won: I focus on the gameplan, I say it doesnt matter if I win or lose, because I dont know, but what matters is I do my absolute best and give it my 100%! As long as I fight the best I can, its okay. And also, focus on something you have to do the next day. I know this sounds stupid but I had to make a big essay the day after my fight. And thinking about that essay, made the nerves for the fight go away, because it reminded me, that my normal life is not gonna change, everything is gonna be the same tomorrow, so I allowed myself to enjoy the 10 minutes I had to be in the cage, because tomorrow life is gonna be exactly the same again, no matter what happens.

Dude to have a dad like Stephens. My dad was literally the reason I'd have an anxiety attack before i'd walk out. He literally would scream and yell going on hour long tirades telling me he was done with me and that i was a waste of time and investment when I would underperform. I'll never forget losing my first match at reno worlds, and he just lost his fucking mind dude and was going to drive us all the way back to Oregon before I got my next match because I was just going to lose so it wasn't worth the time and energy to keep letting me wrestle... and i just said no. I'm here for fun. Then I proceeded to put on the best performance of my life up to that point taking 6th place after getting injured in the quarter finals and having to forfeit my last two matches and suddenly he changed his tune to how proud he was. It would have been nice to have a dad/coach that wasn't an absolute psycho using combat sports as a place where he could isolate me from my mom and emotionally abuse me without her getting in the way.

My trainer would pep talk all the guys on our team. He did it my first fight and I associated it with being lectured, which Im sure nost people dislike. I always felt like I could talk myself into fight mode. I judt asked him to skip the talk pre-fight and he did. My mind was sooo much more clear after that. I know alot of people want/need a talk or someone to hype them up. I prefer to psyche my self up
Bro, if you can take a nap before a fight, you are a natural. I remember watching David Beckham talk to some little kids and one said "Do you get nervous before a game?" hoping for a chestnut. Beckham just said "No." Good advice from you though on the rest of it.
For me i just try to research as much as possible on my opponent. I learn his tendencies as in his perfered attacks, set up attacks, perfered combinations, way of defence, movement, and footwork. Then a game plan is created to defeat this person. Pre fight jitters is so true. I just try my best to remember the game plan and implementing it during the actual fight. Shadow boxing is my perfered way of calming my jitters while i shadow box i imagine im in thier with him. I will use the game plan in the shadow boxing just to really ingrain it into my head. Then when im in there i just feel a supreme confidence.

The best I can do is train hard, give it all that I've got to give, and go home at least satisfied with my performance.
Thank you brother for taking the time. I step in the ring in a few days and sapping up the last tips I can to get me through it safely and not let nerves ruin it 💙
The fact u can actually fall asleep in the back while the card is going on is very impressive. What a badass
Came here as a kendo practitioner dealing with fear before the fight. Thank you for your advice 🙏
I honestly wished more fighters would talk about the mental game. Great video Wonderboy.
I hope this guy gets into coaching after fighting. Special person right here.
Hey Stephen! I am a big fan of you. I have my first fight tomorrow and im really nervous! This video helped me a lot! Thanks!!
Hey I hope the fight went your way! Never give up man. If you won, congratulations! If you lost, then realize that losing always makes you a better fighter because you can learn from your mistakes!
As a competitive gymnast one of the most nerve racking events is floor, you step out onto this big square floor no one else around and sometimes it feels like all eyes are you to perform and make all your tumbling perfect. What helps me is to just clear my mind and get warm.
This man takes naps before his fights! Wow idk if i could even sleep, but thats a great practicr
A nap = A true calm before any storm. Thanks Wonderboy 💯
Wonderboy you are the best💪 I love that you also talk about topics like these to help us amateur fighters out. Keep up the good work, I am sure you have what it takes to win the title🥇 Big fan from Chile🇨🇱, South America✌️
Wonderboy for president ❤
Thanks for sharing this, especially opening up about what your dad tells you. Charish that!
Thank you Mr.Thompson. Your words helped me a great deal today
I am making my amateur MMA debut in two weeks time here in Auckland, New Zealand. These videos are exactly what I needed. Thank you Wonderboy!
I'm late but did you win?
Hey I hope you are doing well. Even if you lost your fight, don't give up! Train harder and never give up on your dream man.
@@Kai-hd5tm sure did 👊🏽
@Steven Dillon good job keep it up!
Im curious how popular this series will be, but it will probably be one of the deepest and most important contributions to me personally.
So thanks!
This is great. Good preparation is the fertile soil out from which victory grows.
I wanna learn how I can calm my nerves in a street fight, Like if I get attacked by 2 people, How do I manage to stay calm and defend myself?
also, big respect goes out to Wonderboy and Ray, the world needs more people like them, and children need more fathers like Ray.
Your fans will still love you too Wonderboy, thanks for being you. ❤️
I have a fight on the twenty sixth, I’m not nervous now but I know it get worse over the weeks but I love the feeling and I’m prepared to win but prepared to learn I can’t wait
Just took my took my first fight offer in a weight class above me. Thank you Stephen
THANKS STEPHEN. I FEEL LIKE WITH THIS GREAT ADVISE, AM READY TO GO.

Really enjoyed this kind of video. Not often do we hear about these things and imo it's even more meaningful coming from such a positive person, win or lose! Looking forward to more videos like this 👍🏼

Fighting in march, fought k1 a couple times but this is my first mma bout, against someone far more experienced than me and I'm struggling big time, not had nerves like this before, already struggle with pretty bad anxiety but this is the worst its been in a long time
I’m 5 weeks out and already stressing. Will be worth it in the end.
How did you get on
@@K9tod Diddnt get the win but put in a solid 5 rounds. Amazing experience and looking forward to the next. Thanks for asking bro 👊
@@T0MMYVP good stuff! 5 rounds is no joke. Hope you are still training!
Classy, honest and generous as usual, it will be hugely satisfying when you become the champion.
