From there, dank memes started to become popular which consisted of heavily edited references to pop culture. And then that was the point where people would really start to do different takes on the same meme. Formats such as “[video meme] but every [reoccurring term/detail] the video [changes via modifier]” became the next best thing. This became very saturated on UA-cam, so memes started to go back to being pictures but still were leeched by everyone when a new meme arose (this is when memes began to have a very short shelf life). And slowly, those picture memes evolved, and began to reference previous memes, eventually resulting in references that were so obscure most people couldn’t understand them. Nowadays, the super obscure references have dialed back a bit, but the whole idea of referencing previous memes has stuck around.
