My dad was a gunner on the Liberator in the Pacific. He was part of the "Long Rangers". He said often the Japanese would fly above them and drop incendiaries down attempting to start the planes on fire.
That sounds scary. Your dad happened to be part of the 307th BG, right?

I worked with a ww2 veteran named Archie Johnstone he was a Navigator on a b24. I asked. Him once you ever see Germany. He said yea. I always set it on fire ...he has since passed on.
That's badass and sad at the same time
My father flew 49 missions in one of those planes. Said it was the worst experience of his life. Everyone always looked like they were facing the electric chair in a couple of hours. He said everyone, all the time, looked like they wanted to scream, completely skittish and paranoid, with their eyes darting everywhere. He said the crashes having nothing to do with the Japanese were as dangerous and as likely as with the enemy.

@@PvtMichael I once saw a picture of my father in college, standing with something like 500 young, uniformed guys who were months away from starting B-24 training (they'd signed contracts). Every single one of those five hundred 18 year olds looked like they'd just been told they'd tested positive for polio or something. Five hundred total sad sacks. Not one smile. Every one of them looking like an abused dog. Their expressions told me more about war than any movie ever. Ugh.

The sound of the bombs falling is so frightening.
Ironic that one of the guys in the American bomber over Germany was speaking in what appeared to be an authentic German accent.
Though there were really German-American bomber crews in the AAF during the war.

My dad was a co pilot on a b24 flew 32 missions over France, Germany and Belgium said the plane was a flying electrical hazard. The name of the plane was the naughty nan.
Fantastic video! One hell of a cliffhanger, but oh well. I’ve been watching all your long mission vids over and over because I love the sounds of the engines, but more importantly, your attention to detail. It’s absolutely amazing (yes, I know I said that when I commented on said videos, but I’ll say it again!😃). You should recreate the famous Ploesti raid of August 1, 1943. 177 D model Liberators hit five oil refineries at low level in Ploesti, Romania. Oh that would be awesome to see!!! Making something of that magnatude woukd make an amazing video, it is unlikely that we can do something like that due to the limitations of the AI, not that we don't want to! But we are always open to new possibilities. plus stay tuned we have another long bomber mission on the way. (From Crabby)

A good friend high school Dad flew 24's in the Pacific. Oscars w/machine guns not as deadly as Zeros w/mgs 2/20mm cannons were "hairy."
24's were a b.... to fly. "Formation flying just wore you out" Ditching in any kind of chop was very dicy because of light garage door bombbay doors

if you do your research the B-24 went faster and held more bombs then the B-17
But it has lesser armor and prone to catch fire when hit. So majority of the Liberators were deployed in the Pacific than in Europe.

@@mkms685 there is video on UA-cam that shows that your statement isn't true....there is video of B-24's getting shot at from behind by German fighters and they take more damage then the B-17 ever did without blowing up or catching fire

That's why I said MAJORITY. Not ALL B24's. There were still B24 Squadrons in Europe and Mediterranean from 1943 to 1945 but majority of the B24's being used were in the Pacific; not just by the Americans but by the Australians as well.
