- Arnie Costell, 72, a former professional baseball player known for his time with the Tigers, Astros, and Yankees, was spotted throwing baseballs at the Venice Beach racquetball courts on Friday, May 10, 2024. Despite retiring from professional baseball in 1979, Costell remains active, frequenting the Venice Beach courts multiple times a week to continue honing his pitching skills.
A Long Island native, Costell was once known for a blistering fastball that could reach speeds of up to 102 mph. Drafted in the first round of the 1971 MLB Draft from Nassau Community College, the left-hander quickly gained attention with his powerful yet unpredictable pitches. Jim Leyland compared his velocity to that of Nolan Ryan and Bert Blyleven, though his lack of accuracy earned him the reputation of having "Mrs. Koufax's control."
Costell's early career with the Bristol Tigers and Oneonta Yankees was marred by high walk rates, which ultimately led to his departure from professional baseball by age 23. However, he left an indelible mark, particularly with his memorable appearances at Shea Stadium in an All-Star Game where his idol, Sandy Koufax, had excelled.
Costell played in various minor league teams, compiling a career record of 2 wins and 13 losses with a 7.11 ERA across 45 games. He last took the field during the 1975 season, having played for the Bristol Tigers, Oneonta Yankees, Clinton Pilots, and Dubuque Packers.
Now, Costell maintains his passion for baseball by participating in an over-25 men's league, where his fastball still reaches speeds of 82 mph. His improved control and charismatic personality continue to leave a lasting impression on those who meet him.
