Every year we do a huge Halloween haunt setup in our yard. We have a big fenced in graveyard, lots of ghosts and skeletons, and a lot of other DIY Halloween props that we’ve made throughout the years. Last year we made these really neat hanging Halloween lights that are solar-powered and made from mason jars and this spooky Halloween fabric that is dyed and cut to look like Spanish moss. They have a great organic, kind of “swamp” feel to them which goes perfectly with our New Orleans theme. Since the Halloween lanterns were such a hit last year, we made a few more this season (with a couple of upgrades) and this video shows you how to do it!
We’re new to making videos so we’d love to hear your feedback! Please leave us a comment below and let us know what you think of the build! Want to see us make something? Let us know below!

I love this so much. I used a plastic peanut butter jar, painted the inside and drilled a small hole in the top (the bottom of the jar) big enough for a tea light bulb. I hot glued the tea light in, and proceeded as shown. Thanks for your GREAT videos!
Awesome!!! 👊🏼😄
So, just a little tip, instead of changing out the led light, paint a thin layer of gallery glass paint on the bulb. It dries clear orange (for painting stained glass) in any craft store or on Amazon.
Nice!! You wouldn’t get the flickering but great way to adjust the color. Love it.
@@WickedMakers I was about to post a similar comment but noticed someone beat me to it..great minds think alike...actually I wouldn't mind doing this for when we go camping down the beach each summer..we use a gazebo out front of our caravan so I could tie one one or to the posts...make it safer when walking back to camp during one of those late night treks that old folks have to do..chuckle..
But then you don't get that flicker.
@@WickedMakersjay
Another and possibly cheaper option is to use a marker or sharpie to colour over the bulb. You can make the colour as transparent or opaque as you want.
Pros:
You can leave areas of the bulb “as is” transparent and only colour the areas you want so that you can still see the flickering.
Or use different shades that are normally seen on a lit candle. Yellow, orange, red, blue, purple, white.
And if the marker or sharpie is still wet you can use a cloth to either wipe the colour off entirely or use a paper towel to add dimension and remove excess colour so it appears more organic
After the marker or sharpie has dried you can typically use any multipurpose cleaner that you have in the house or a diy all purpose cleaner (white vinegar, 90% or greater rubbing alcohol and (yes it has to be) blue Dawn dishsoap and it will remove any trace of colour. Leaving you with a clean blank canvas.
Cons:
The rare time all purpose cleaner doesn’t remove all the colour, use acetone on a cotton round to do the job. Just make sure to follow the acetone with another cotton round that is saturated in water. I’ve never had any issues or caused damage to any light bulbs using this method and the water to wash off the acetone is apparently not necessary. But I try to live by the motto Better safe than sorry.
i saw this video yesterday, and i wanted to make one. luckily my grandfather took me out to get stuff, and he let me get the materials. they look good in my Halloween themed room, thanks Wicked Makers fo getting me inspired to make this
Nice!!!! 😄😄😄
We just did this for our northwest haunters association BBQ and make and take day this past weekend. Turned out great!! We used the solar flame jars off Amazon to cut down on time. They are awesome looking. Thanks for the inspiration and how to!!!
Love hearing that! Glad it went well.
This is awesome. We recently got some old Mason jars from my dad's basement. I want to make a string of these for our deck
They look really cool! Depending on the spooky theme one could also make "spooky ship lights" with pieces of fishing nets or algae on them or use a spooky green-ish or blue-ish light ;)
Yeah!! Awesome idea!😄
I am making these for the second time this year! Thanks so much, guys! 🧙🏻♀️🐈⬛🦇
Love these. I need to make a few for my new deck. The fabric you used is cheesecloth, which you can get at the grocery store usually in the utensil or canning supply section.
Thanks!! 👋🎃
What a sick light! I’m planning on doing a ‘ferryman’ costume this year, this will be the PERFECT prop for me!
reminds me of the Pirates ride at Disneyland when you’re in that swamp area in the beginning. love it!
Those spooky swamp lamps are absolutely fantastic eerie and really give the hallows swamp look to it absolutely love the make
Yes!!!
@@WickedMakers 😀👍
Great idea, love the outcome! If I may, you could lose the music. It made it's kind of hard to hear.
Thanks Debby! We appreciate the feedback. In our recent videos we've fixed the music issue.
@@WickedMakers Sorry, but the music rocks! Love it!
I totally agree about the music. I had to mute and read lips, it was so distracting! Lol! Besides that, I enjoy your videos. Fun and creative! 🎃🍁🎃
Instantly recognized that thunder sound. Go go go!
The fabric is common cheesecloth, you can buy that all over the place, fabric stores sell it by the yard, also hardware/paint stores sell cheesecloth, so its very easy to find.
I'm getting a message from "beatmetodeath" saying they can't find cheesecloth, they sell it by that name at paint stores, fabric stores, walmart has it in more than one department, or just Google cheesecloth, its sold all over the place and its cheap.
G56AG among other places, in 🇨🇦 we can buy cheesecloth in our grocery stores. Amazon and Wish also sell it.
This isn't cheesecloth. Cheesecloth is much finer. This stuff usually only comes out at Halloween.
I'm sorry you don't know much about cheesecloth, it comes in a broad variety of grades from 10 to 90. Grade 10 is extremely coarse (open) while grade 90 is a very fine weave. Stores often only carry one grade, as an example paint stores usually stock the grade most often used by painters, and that is the only one they carry, a good fabric store is more likely to have a variety of grades to choose from. Google cheesecloth grades for an explanation about the grades and their thread counts, etc.
It's gauze cloth
Just buy the mason jar solar lids. Use stained glass paint to paint the LEDs if they're not the color you want. Really cool project. I've made fairy jars like this with fairy and dragon silhouettes in them. Great to make with kids too.
I would stick with regular ac power lid as solar lid is not reliable and don't last long. I should know as I have them and they only lasted 6 months.
Yep, it really does resemble Spanish Moss❣️Great look❗️👍
Very Cool and looks easy to do ... jamie you are a real artist
Halloween is the best time of the year. Your light is just what I need all year round.
Right on!
So glad i came across your channel last year as i was looking at diy fog chillers which worked wonderfully! This year my wife was wanting to have a couple spooky lanterns. I remembered this video and am so greatful! We are using peanutbutter jars instead of mason jars. Cuts down on weight and repurposes the plastic jar. Thanks so much for sharing your amazing ideas!
Tea and turmeriuc would have given you a good color for your lights with out using dye.
Those are fabulous
I love the LED swap! Makes all the difference. I'm pretty sure I've got some of those flickery ones lying around....
Nice!! It's definitely kind of an "extra" step, but it makes a massive difference.
Great idea love how you guys have such great imaginations and ideas to get through it
I like the fact that you highlight mistakes, interesting build
Thanks! 👋😄
For the top you could mix some instant coffee with school glue paint this in the lid the while wet,, dash some cinnamon . Gives it a rust effect.
Just a thought .
Nice!!! That’s a great tip. 😄
Thanks for giving me inspiration! My grandparents don't really decorate for Halloween, and when I help them do chores, they give me 20 bucks, so I am going to help out a bunch, and then knock their socks off with a New Orleans Graveyard! I am going to do this craft, the witch'es cauldron, the fire windows, the fireflies, and gravestones!
Wow that sounds great!!! Good luck with all your builds. Let us know if you have any questions. 😄
@@WickedMakers I will thank you! 💗
Great idea with the flickering light.
Thanks!
Those lights are great. Good idea
Dude the background music is AWESOME!!!
You guys are awesome. Thank you for all the cool ideas
I used (yellow, orange, red and green) alcohol dye( from Michael's) on the inside. Acrylic( matte O.D green, matte black) on the outside. I found some green muslin netting and took Rit(brown) dye in a spray bottle and dyed the netting variously. Was quite easy and fun for the Mrs and I. Feel free to try this way and see how it spooks for you(anyone). Happy haunting!
A little bit of orange paint would've worked on the L.E.D. light
Great idea!!
I was going to say water down some yellow or orange paint and paint the bulb
I personally don't think it looks like moss, but with the net it gives me a danky fisherman vibe so it's still cool.
Nice addition of the flickering LED!
Thanks! 😄😄
The SPooKy Halloween cloth is called Cheese Cloth.
SugerMin actually it called Creepy Cloth sold for Halloween. Cheese cloth is much finer in texture.
It's a gauze cloth
Dollar Tree sells it, Spooky Fabric :)
Looks awesome, gonna make a similar w/ a green light
Very cool!
I love your spooky lamp idea they look amazing, I’ve made my own. Thanks for sharing 🎃💀🎈🖤☠️
Great video I love that you do so so many dying videos
Awesomeness
Dang, so many options, thanks!
Awesome channel! Thank you for all of the tutorials!
Thanks for checking them out! 👊🏼😄
Those are cool looking.
Thanks for the idea! I'd love to make some
Thanks! 😄
Loved it. Very cool. 💕
Looks like fun! Perfect for Halloween coming up!! 🎃
Yeah man! These are wicked fun to make.
Nice love it
Very cool😃
Love this! Gonna give it a try - even might have to hack the light!
Nice!! 😀
I have loooots of Mason jars and plenty of cheese cloth...I can make a modified version of these this year. Will look great on my porch.. 👍THANKS 😊
You guys are awesome. So inspiring! Could you put in a word to my wife who is not into Halloween as mush as I am?
those look awesome
They have that ** material ** @ Walmart in the HALLOWEEN stuff ***and where evr you might find Halloween stuff @ other places too, prices vary.. but that's soooo awesome..I really like that idea of SWAMP LIGHTS😊😊😊😎😎😎😎🦇🦇🦇🦇
They turned out great. I'm going to do a bunch of these for this year with creepy cloth. Thanks for uploading :)
Thanks! They’re super fun to make.
Got to make some wow ty guys
looks great. nice work.
Love these. Sadly, we get so little sunlight here around Halloween, I’m not sure they’d last very long but I’m definitely going to give them a go for next year!
You might be surprised at how little light these guys require to charge up. Overcast days are usually fine. 😀
Wicked Makers Thanks for taking the time to reply. They’re on my list for next year 😊
I’m definitely making some of these!
Very nice! Thank you!
I would just like to point out that I think it’s hilarious how many comments are arguing over what the cloth is called. 😂 Let’s all agree that cheese cloth, creepy cloth, and gauze cloth are the same thing!!! It’s just different thickness and whatnot. I needed cheese/creepy/gauze cloth for a cabinet staining project once, and realized that Menards and Home Depot carry two different types, and they were not leaving the same finish. I had to go back to the store and buy the type I originally started with. 🧐
🤣 Yep!
You could also make Soul Light Jars with battery powered light strands.
Yep!
those are so cool
How awesome such great ideas you have
Thanks!! 👋🎃
Wowwww it's so great and it's so easy to make 🎃🤣🌳🌳🕷🕷❤️🇵🇰🇵🇰🇵🇰
😄😄😄
Absolutely love these!!!
😄😄😄😄
Super cool idea.
Thanks! :)
Oooh. So excited to try this!
Nice!!
Awesome!! I want to try this ...
i know this is late but as you were making these I was thinking "OMG! i would sooo keep these up all year long!" and then you said you do and my little creepy heart was at peace lol
Hahaha 😄😄😄
Fantastic! You guys ROCK! so fun! 💀☠️💀
👊🏼👊🏼👊🏼👊🏼😄
Those are fun.
You guys should try and make a Tonberry.... and if you need to know it's a creepy little thing from the Final Fantasy franchise....
white glue or mod podge mixed with a tiny amount of paint would work on the light and still give it a semi-transparent look
Great tip! :)
Paint the glass with artist quality Quinacridone burnt orange. Its a transparent colour and you wouldn't need to change the bulb out.
Can you guys make DIY pumpkin fence pillars, and a DIY pumpkin vine tower for Halloween?
That’s a super cool idea!
the fabric you have is called Creepy Cloth at Dollar Tree. You can get it in the green or grey / green color.
Yeah nice!! Great tip. 👋🎃
It's cheese cloth.
Cool idea, I'm afraid to touch cables though, so I think I'm going to just paint my lamp orange/red, so the light comes spooky anyway. :D
Awesome!
Great stuff guys. Next time you need dirty jars come grab em from my sink.... will save me some washing ;]
Yep got my vote!...Now where are those old Mason jars?.....Thanks for the AWESOME IDEA!
Thanks!!! 🙏😀
These are so cool! Thanks for posting! Can’t wait to make a few. Side note... I found Dollar Tree amber cellophane wrapping paper works great as gels for small projects like this.
Awesome!!
Folks, don't solder circuit boards to change the color. Since the outside is opaque, just add a piece of colored gel over the led. It takes two seconds a bit of tape and you can put any colors you want in your lanterns. In addition, leds aren't always interchangeable. Simpler is better.
Simpler idea, sure. But you don’t get the flickering effect this way.
We glued the lid ring to the light so we can unscrew it if we need to replace the battery. I also clipped off the edges of the battery lid to help center the lid ring.
For anyone wondering what the cloth is at the beginning, its called cheesecloth. You can buy it at a fabric store or if you look up spooky table cover it should come up. Hope this helps!
Yep! Cheesecloth works great too.
@@WickedMakers Oh it's not the one you used in the vid? Which one is it then out of curiosity?
Hm, I thought it was called decorative gauze.....
@@MsMcmoe There are two different things that work the same. Just choose whats best for you. :D
So making this for my witch costume
Nice! 😄
Very cool! Not sure if you've figured this out yet or not, but a great way to frost class and make it look old and weathered is to mix regular Elmer's school glue with water, and paint that on the glass. It seems to hold up and stick much better than latex paint. I made an old looking gas lantern using this technique. Here's a shot of the lantern ua-cam.com/video/cQ8dLPfXdNo/v-deo.html
Question what was the ratio of glue to water you used?
Love it
Have you thought of fairytale princesses with a little more accurate details from the earliest versions of their stories please, that would be cool.
Thanks for sharing. That is cool.God Bless You All.MeMe
5:50 I've replayed it about 5 times now and all I can hear is 'And in case you are wondering, yes.... we will rise up your end' - I'm really sure that's not what you say LOL
Haha! “We leave them up year round.” 😄
@@WickedMakers Oh..... thank you so much! I was a little worried :D Love your channel :)
One idea would be to take the original flickering light and connect the solar power wires to that circuitry to keep the flicker effect.
Yeah, nice! 🤘🏼😄
omg your CHANNEL IS THE BEST I HAVE A VIDEO IDEA:
how to get the most halloween candy!!
Strings of Tattered/shredded Camo netting could've added an extra dimension of mossiness as well.
Great idea
You can get that cloth in that color by default too, I have some I got at a Dollar Tree.
So I’m currently making these and the only modifications I’m going to make to these are- I’m going to use a screw on lid for protection of the LED and a standard candle like the ones you guys took apart originally, only because those lights you glued on, the rechargeable battery will eventually loose it’s ability to charge and you’ll have to replace it and the cost of those is huge vs another pack of LED faux candles, and it’s easier to just dump the old led and throw a new one in instead of the whole battery change+possibly redoing the whole twine on the candle. I also just used the same paint I used to make the green/brown wash to make the dye for the cheese clothe, that saves you 5-8 bucks on buying the cloth dye. I also will probably use a matte varnish to protect the paint on the glass to prevent chipping in the future as the paint ages as well as the metal lid from rusting, although I’m not sure of the effect on the visibility despite the varnish being clear. I loved the video tho thank you for the inspiration and awesome video quality, it’s always so nice to see haunters that are a little savvy when it comes to audio/video.
Awesome!! Those are great ideas. 🤘🏼😄 Glad you enjoyed the video.
I love that you changed light. Since I do not have any flickering candles, i thought I would buy flicker leds and replace them that way. On the leds i want to purchase it requires at least 4.5vdc to fire the flicker circuit which I believe the solar will not provide. Am I correct?
Hmm, 4.5v is probably too much for these little solar lights, yeah. The ones we used have a single niMh rechargeable AA which is 1.2v at full charge. If you can find something with a lesser requirement you might be better off. Good luck! :)
You can color the bright white bulb with sharpie as well
Yep! You just won’t get the flicker
@@WickedMakers Ahhh yes, great point.
🔥🔥🔥
try making a walking zombie hand (by attaching it to a remote control car and adding some extra stuff to it)
Would you recommend sealing the light/fabric to make it water proof? Love the light by the way 😊
We’ve never had any issues with water and we get a LOT of rain. The solar lights are already pretty well water proofed and the fabric doesn’t care, so you’re probably fine as is. 😃
i would try kind of orange transparent paper for the orange glow and put it in the glas. so you don´t have to use a soldering gun to change the tiny little bulbs. instead using the solar light as it is. not everyone is skilled enough to use such things even if it looks easy ; )
