Hey you should put some sort of aeration in the pond. Even if it's an air pump or fountain it will increase trout survival rate. And keep it oxygenated in the summer.

His pond is probably almost completely anoxic the only water that's still holding enough oxygen for them to survive is the top foot of water so they're already up high in the column, then the open holes are giving them access to water that actually has good oxygen above the ice. Small ponds in the winter are basically on a timer one the ice is in and the snow is on the ice the pond won't produce any more oxygen until the ice is off. A shallow pond like his has a lot of microorganisms and shit like that that will use up all the oxygen pretty quick leaving none for the fish. If you clear the snow what ever plants are in there will at least be able to photosynthesize and put a bit of oxygen back into the system.

Trout live in cool, oxygen-rich water. It makes a lot of sense that they're trying to swim up to the surface since they're literally suffocating. There is no way there would be enough oxygen in such a small pond to last all winter. Install an aerator!

Since there doesn’t seem to be a creek flowing into the pond, you’ll need an aerator. Makes sense they are dying from low oxygen if they were swimming up at the ice, and over the hole.

Love the pond vids at camp claw Jon B! I believe the pond is flooding because the weight of the snow is too much for the ice to handle, so it’s sinking and the water is coming up out of your hole. I saw this a lot fishing in the springtime on MN lakes, where water would actually gush out of a hole. Since your pond is small you could try to get the snow off and then use some of that meshing again over your hole to keep the trout in, but idk if it would be worth the hassle.

Like others have said Johno, there is no dissolved oxygen in the water due to lack of plant and being frozen over. You need to run an aerating pump or stop it from freezing over with no oxygen being produced from wind/wave motion or enough plant to produce oxygen. The fish are suffocating due to lack of dissolved oxygen. That’s why they are coming to the surface. 👍

These conditions were basically how the ice was near me all season and that’s why I only got out a couple times this year 😅
