    Hi Nina, your Phals look pretty happy to me! I suspect that these finicky summer bloomers love their humidity + aeration around the roots, so the odds are already stacked against you with your dry climate! I’m in the NYC area, which turns into a glorified swamp in the summertime 😂 I potted my bellina in moss with golfball-sized pieces of charcoal as a substrate (out of sheer laziness on my part- I stole my husband’s grilling charcoal!), and that silly plant couldn’t be happier! 🤷

      Hi Sara 😍💐 they don't look too bad considering what they have to deal with, but I know what the Happy Eagle is capable of and well, it is a fraction of it's potential. However, as my motto goes... they are alive and that is all I can ask for atm. That is all I WILL ask for 😃 that charcoal stuff is fantastic, no matter what the source (not treated of course) ... I bet your husband didn't even notice they were gone and the steak still tastes just as good 😆 thank you so very much for watching, lovely lady! It is good to see you and I hope that you are having a wonderful summer in the 'swamp'... I love swamp conditions 😂 ❤️🌸

    Nina, ho scoperto il tuo canale relativamente da poco, ma ogni tuo video è un pozzo di informazioni e di sfumature. In questo ho capito perchè a volte si usano leca piccoli e a volte grandi. Io pensavo che la dimensione dei leca fosse legata solo alla dimensione delle radici. Ma quello che hai detto ha molto senso; più piccola è la dimensione e maggiore è la quantità di acqua che c'è attorno alle radici. Ovvio. Grazie e ciao. Buona serata

      Andrea, hi 😍💐 thank YOU so much for watching, lovely lady! It is always good to see you 😃 I am ok... having a wonderful time on the patio with the 'chiddos while I have these amazing conditions. So much fun! Yes, I have lost orchids because of the unusually high humidity this time of year, but I sooo enjoy the high humidity personally, loosing orchids is just part of the yin and yang of life. I prefer the conditions tbh!! I hope that you managed to stay dry today! I am sorry that you had a rained out Friday, but hope that your day was otherwise beautiful 🫶🏼❤️🌸

    I give my summer bloomers quite a bit more light than a complex hybrid, I find that if they don't get enough light, they are stingy on the root production. I don't know if there is a space available with brighter light, but more light should drive more root growth. But, it could also be your winter temps inhibiting roots, I can't say for sure.

    • @NinjaOrchids
      @NinjaOrchids  Рік тому +6

      Don Miguel 🥰💐 hola jefe! I will get to give these a lot more light once that white shelf thingie is in perma shade as the angle of the sun drops a little more. Not possible at the moment, so.. it is what it is. If I put them inside on the glass shelf, they will burn because the sun is already filling that space. I have my complex hybrids there, but had to move the schilleriana today because I was a little concerned about the heat on the leaves. I wish I could get them into the blooming alley, but with the mounts there getting misted, there is too much splashing. Even though the temps are high, the humidity is as well. Which I LOVE, but some of my orchids have departed the premises because of it and my set up. I will take these conditions though. If that means I have to sacrifice some orchids, ce la vie! I am thinking of having them on the middle shelf of the indoor grow space that will feature in the next video. BUT, it all depends if I have it sterilized properly as I don't want pests to have a go, on top of everything else. At some point, I can put another grid in front of the deep south, and that is where they will live until it is time to bring them in. The light is definitely important for better root growth. I live and grow in hope! Thank you so much for watching, Michael, I appreciate your time and support 🫶🏼 hope you had a wonderful day ❤️🌸

    Hi Nina....my phals seem to last about 4 to 5 yrs then just drop!! Odd since they grow like weeds and produce beautiful flower spikes and bloom like crazy. 😊 Then afterwards they just quit!! 🤔 I've been wanting to get some of the mini species, but hesitant since they $$$ and can't afford to waist funds.🧐 Well it's now 11:30am and is now 100° outside🥵 Fluff has even decided it's to hot for her fuzzy butt outside but still goes out for her fountain breaks...😅 Have sn awesome evening, catch ya later...👋🏻

      🦇🦋😍 I tell you, the price of these things are bonkers! That is why I won't be replacing any of them, even if my circumstances were to change. Like Neos... I would have loved to have more, but now I am glad that I never hit the 'checkout' icon on an order that I had already placed... that was 5 years ago when things were totally different. I would look at nursery pages and go, yep I'll have that, and that, and that, ... check if there are any that I missed, and well, so on and so forth! What leaves the collection is a beautiful memory and fun to grow, experience at the time. I have enough anxiety, I can do without some orchids stressing me out during the winter. Cuddles to Fluff ❤️🐾 thank you for also watching this video, Robert!! stay away from the fires, unless you have marshmallows and wieners! 🤪

    • @NinjaOrchids
      @NinjaOrchids  Рік тому +4

      Hi 😍💐 they are actually easier to grow than complex phalaenopsis hybrids... for me at least! Back in the day, when I had all my winter kit and caboodle up and running, they did so well, bloomed, grew like weeds. They love SH, the moisture around the roots and the regular flushing, The first year, after my circumstances changed, I was so freaked out about loosing them, but now 2 years in and after having a lost quite a few, I am able to take things in stride. We can only do so much with what we are given. Sometimes, there is a group of orchids that just won't work well for us, and there is no rhyme or reason as to why not. Maybe that could be the case in your case? For the price that they cost, they are not the kind to experiment with 🥹 like me and the speciality Neos. I wanted a whole collection, but other than the classic one... the others are not exactly doing stellar. So appreciate you watching the video, thank you so much! I hope you had a wonderful Friday 🫶🏼❤️🌸

      HI Chuck 😍💐I am glad that SH is working for you. I would like to add 'as well', but in my case, it is not the set up, it revolves around my winter conditions. I just water them once a week if they need it and that’s about it feed and fertilise when needed and that’s all I do don’t know what the pH is in the water never ever I’ve tested it but they seem to be doing okay for me. HI Robyn 😍💐 we are the orchid rescuers as much as we are growers! I had a friend of my daughter bring me 2 of her orchids that she was too nervous to repot herself. She brought me all the stuff that she wanted them potted up in, and I made a mystery repot video because well, what is in the pots and what is in the bags she brought me 😃 they were doing really well while I had them in the grow space under lights (back in the day I was using my lights) so... methinks they should still be fine or else I would have heard about it. Rescuing orchids is such a wonderful feeling and I am happy that you are seeing results in such a short period of time! Thank YOU so much for watching my videos, I appreciate your support very much 🫶🏼 hope you enjoy the velamen video as well ❤️🌸

      @@NinjaOrchids several more ninja orchid vids later...I am feeling more confident with updated lessons. 30 years ago I was the orchid buyer for a large florist & garden centre. My confidence is returning now, too, with a clearer understanding of the term 'semi hydroponics'. I love the velamen and ph training. Makes so much sense. As I have 2 betta fish in different habitats I am very familiar with ph consistency.
      ¿can i use clean water for the orchids that have had a ph neutralizer powder added? This particular powder lowers the ph to 7, and even if you add more the ph will not go lower than 7, safe for fish.
      My tap water can be 7.2 to 7.0, occasionally higher. 💗 thank you!

    • @NinjaOrchids
      @NinjaOrchids  Рік тому +5

      I am glad that the information you are watching resonates with you! Sometimes it is difficult to talk about things without sounding as if one is talking in circles, repetitive or even contradicting onesself all in a single paragraph 😆 the pH neutralizer powder would not be a threat to the orchids, but, how clean is your tap water? The reason I ask is, while the pH may be fine, the content of the water may not be. I have a pH of 9 sometimes on my tap water, and the ppm is around 350. When my RO system was failing 2 years ago, I started to go 50% RO water and 50% tap water and the roots of my orchids died.... even though my pH was adequate for maximum nutrient absorption. My tap water has something in it that is toxic for orchids. We do not have a web page service in Spain where you can look up the quality of our water. I am not paying for an analysis service either, just hope that my RO system doesn't fail 🤞🏼 I only used the 50% water mix on my large bare root vandas, added some fertilizer to at least give them something, so my TDS was only around 500ppm which large vandas can easily handle. So, the 50% of RO water mixed with my tap water brought my TD down to 175, add the fertilizer to get to 500ppm and still, Vanda roots were a gonner. If you know that your tap water is free of anything that is toxic to the roots then your pH neutralizer is not going to have any adverse effect. Apologies for the long reply. I do like to give examples of why I say what I say 😬 hope this was helpful 🫶🏼

      @robyn4188 Рік тому +5

      @@NinjaOrchids thank you, yes this is helpful. Here we have artisan spring water that is excellent, having traveled for miles underground over rock. Though in public water pipe systems they unfortunately add chlorine when they have to open the pipes for repairs etc to counter bacteria. Bleh. Though it is a noticeable odor when this occurs. I always have a large bowl of water out to evaporate any chemicals before using this water for fish habitats. Am now using this water for orchids too.
      Thanks thanks again. Examples given, I get it. Gracias! 💕🧡🙏

      😍It is always so nice to see you!! Coincidence or not! Thank you so so much beautiful, for watching 🫶🏼 they are ... ok! I am waiting for the angle of the sun to give me a little space on the patio for them to hang out in for 5 weeks (without me having to shuffle them) considering what they have to deal with and what I feel about my winters, I am not as enchanted by them anymore. I feel as though it is not worth taking these highlight orchids through months of care and only to get limited blooming. Still, I do live in hope that one day my channel will be able to foot the bills and until then, if they don't collapse, I shall take care of them and hope for the best! 🤞🏼 ❤️🌸

      @NinjaOrchids I can relate with the summer bloomers. In my climate, the year-round care yields maybe one blooming for some of them in summer. I don't even get to enjoy the sequential blooms because winter comes along and nips them in the bud...literally 😆. I acquired most of my summer bloomers when I first branched out from grocery store Phals. Now I wish I didn't collect quite so many, so I could dabble in genera that do better in my climate, or perhaps bloom more frequently. They're charming, though, and I've put so much care into them that I've become too attached to part with them 😭

    howdy, great video! thank you! but im curious if you are soaking your leca for awhile before using? i only ask because ours usually floats hope your spring is nice...we were just down there at the tail end of the last cold snap and noticed the orange blossoms weren't as smelly as they usually are :( but your plants are looking great!

    • @NinjaOrchids
      @NinjaOrchids  6 місяців тому +2

      Hi 😍💐 its good to see you! I hope you are doing well 🫶🏼 after sterilizing, yes, I actually store my leca submerged in closed containers filled with RO water. Once the sizes are sorted out, into water they go until I need it and that can take months depending on which container I grab. But usually I grab the oldest one that has been stored the longest. There is a substrate that is used a lot for landscape aeration that has a greyer look to it, than the leca that you see in my videos. That leca will never sink. It floats, no matter how long you try to soak it. I had a container with that stuff in it for several months just to see what would happen and it never sank to the bottom, so, if you have a 'greyish' looking kind of leca then it is great for mixing into organic media for aeration, but useless for anything semi hydro. Finally, it appears that the weather is switching from that horrible cold snap. Followed by 10 days of torrential rain on and off. Rain great, cold temperatures... not welcome at all. I think tonight is the last night that can be considered dodgy to leave orchids outside, but I am so done with bringing them in and out, my body is objecting as well... so, they are just going to have to ride it out and I shall keep my fingers crossed 🤞🏼 thank you so much for watching!
