This explains why Samsung QD-OLED development has been so rocky - the question now: with Kateeva's assets how quickly can TCL come to market with a QD competitor?
does Kateeva's assets contain key patents related to the QD-OLED filtering technology? If so Samsung is sure to screw themselves over unless they can get around those with their own development.
I'll throw in a Machiavellian soap opera twist: Samsung's plan, all along, was just to see what Kateeva had, then abandon them. I can't believe that Samsung didn't know, right from the start, that Kateeva was TCL. Their scheme was to find out what they could, then use that going forward themselves. They will fight it out in court - over years and years - if there were patent infringements. LOLOLOL Can you imagine a Chinese company suing somebody else for patent right infringements?
Kateeva were supposed to be perfecting inkjet printed OLED - that is why Samsung invested in them in the first place. They always knew that TCL were fellow investors. Reading between the lines Kateeva never provided any end product and that is simply why Samsung ditched them. Samsung would simply have bought them if they had produced anything meaningful.
All talk and vaporware from Kateeva? I wouldn't be surprised at that either. Not being an "insider", I thought Barry Young's article (linked in the Description) was pretty insightful but it did suggest that Kateeva had something of substance.
You make a lot of sweeping statements and assumptions. And to be honest a lot of it doesn't make sense. Rather than Samsung ending their partnership with kateeva because they were 'paranoid' it is more likely that they are keeping the project in house to save money, profit and costs. If TCL owns kateeva then they could have gained information about QD OLED if kateeva works with Samsung or not. And knowing this information Samsung would not have worked with kateeva as they would support their competitors TCL. Samsung are a smart company and they would have a legally binding contract in place with kateeva to ensure technology and info is not shared. Plus the reality is the second Q OLED or Q NED is made other manufacturers will purchase these products and gain an understanding of the infrastructure and release there own versions within a year or 2.
So much insight on what to most of us would just be technical manufacturing noise. Thanks for bringing us into the understanding loop. It will be interesting to see how this progresses. Too bad a U.S. company gets destroyed in the process.
having worked on devices with OLED display technology two of the major issues is 1) longevity due to the ease of "burn-in" artifacts visible after a period of time and 2) inoperable screen due to micro cracks as oppose to a back-lit screen being able to withstand cracks. With the front Quantum dot technology what are now the pros and cons of this technology vs. the traditional OLED display tech?
The PROs compared to LG's WOLED stack is that LG's color filter (not QD) maxes out at 75% BT2020. QD color filters promises over 90% BT2020 coverage, and greater brightness because QD is the most efficient approach to color filters so it allows more luminance than LG's current color filter. Additionally, if QD-OLED is driven by the triple OLED blue emitter stack, the theory is that you don't have to worry about uneven dimming of blue OLEDs, because there's enough of them to last despite emitting much more brightly than LG, and why LG OLED panels have such aggressive auto-brightness-limiter (ABL) in place to protect the OLEDs. The CONs are: this is the theory, but Samsung has been unable to get this QD-OLED stack to work (I talked about it here ua-cam.com/video/EoHh7ZwdvKo/v-deo.html ) - the blue light leakage in the QD layer is an issue right now. In theory this is the next step up from LG's current OLED stack. It's like first generation hybrids are in theory better than pure internal combustion engines, but it took over 10 years for the hybrids to outperform pure ICE to be "flagship" engines for Audi, Lexus and Mercedes..
Samsung got way too premium for me and as I wanted an all around good gaming TV (and since I’m streaming now), TCL’s 2018 6-Series is doing the job beautifully. The fact that TCL supports Dolby vision also helps. My folks know I’m looking at either the updated 6-Series or 8-Series this year and my TV will be given to them. For me TCL has definitely been the best bang for the buck.
It is cheap for a reason, they are trying to put other tv manufacturers out of business and then have the market all by themselves. And then they start raising prices.
Kevin Samsung came to the US market as a budget brand over 15+ years ago (I know they’re a Korean brand) and now look where they are. TCL will eventually become like Samsung and other brands will emerge as budget brands before becoming premium brands. It’s the nature of commerce and competition, an endless cycle.
They have been investors from the start, but not the sole investor. Now, TCL may just swoop in and just buy out the other investors for pennies on the dollar.

If TCL owns Kateeva, why did it still go out of business? If this is all about money, couldn't they have carried on with TCL's money? I think this is more than just money. I thinks Samsung not only stops supplying money, they also takes their own IP and know-hows that are essential to the cooperation and go home.
Possibly, TCL let it fail so it could swoop in and pick up the pieces - maybe Kateeva progressed enough with R&D that TCL was no longer interested in being an investor but more of a vulture.
So my question is where is Sony/Japanese in this equation? Or Vizio? Why is the battle between China and South Korea? And excellent end music...reminds me of that HBO Series The Deuce...

My pure speculation - I honestly don't know where the Kateeva engineers have gone, but it appears that Kateeva has not completely thrown in the towel, and the new CEO May Su is focusing her efforts on building out business in China bit.ly/3bfbSb2 ... hmmm I wonder when they'll be announcing their partnership with TCL and BOE?
The solutions was simple...Samsung should have simply bought out Kateeva. Seriously, it was that easy. If they went out of business by NOT having the deal with Samsung then they clearly didn't have much capital or foundation to turn down a reasonable buyout offer in the first place.
Samsung is trying to plug the dam that will burst sooner than later. It reminds me of 2005-2010 when Plasma was the superior display technology, but costly. FOMO, why did you not talk about the possibility of Samsung simply buying Kateeva? For Kateeva, if Samsung was going to part company with them and they knew this would lead to them imploding, a Samsung offer to buy them out would have made sense and would probably have been the best option for Samsung.
I was in doubt before but now I cannot just see were samsung is going at all. LCD factories were sold and closed, qd oled or qdned are delayed for at least another 2 years (so 2023 giving that they would have really succeed to go live on 2021) microled is still a joke.....which product will be sold next year by samsung? Rebranded boe or auo panels? So competing side side only on electronics with Sony?
Rebranded Sharp panels too! But you are correct - for the near future, it will be QLED in 2021 and likely 2022. QD-OLED is still definitely prototyping stage. CES 2021 is supposed to be its coming out party, we'll see.
Maybe they did some due diligence and find out it was no worth the investment. Maybe they are more ahead that we think. Maybe they stole the secrets and now they have the same knowledge inside...
Sadly, the "good stuff" do not come in anything under 48 inches; for that small size, it's definitely "budget" entry level, and I always go with TCL at these smaller sizes. My first TCL was around 42" purchased in 2014 and it still works well today.
Can't Samsung just buy Kateeva? They have 11b$. EDIT: Plus TCL already announced that they are working on Color conversion at front, I think you made a video on it last year?
Almost (good catch by the way), TCL combined the polarizer with the color filter for greater efficiency, brightness and better viewing angles, but alas the color filter itself is not quantum dot! QD is still in the enhancement film.
FOMO on TECH hmm... so will that approach be any inferior than bringing QD layer to the front. To me it feels like the result of both would be very similar.
Business is war. And let's be real a 1 year edge isn't all that valuable. Frankly some among the ac community might of called Samsung incompetent if the followed thru.
If TCL already owns the company Samsung was going to work with than the undoubtedly already own the QD tech of that company, right? BUT if that company needs Samsung for the final piece of the puzzle than TCL own a whole lot of useless QD partial tech info. I think if Samsung didn't think they could do it on their own and protect the final crown jewel by doing so they wouldn't have walked away.
True - wishing I was a fly on the wall during these discussions, because Kateeva wouldn't have. put all their eggs in one basket with Samsung if there wasn't some substance to this QD-OLED relationship.
Why would Samsung invest 11 billion to be 1 year ahead of Tcl and Tcl can get the technologie 1 year later for nothing? I think Samsung has better plans.
All this about quantum dot is all well and good if you’re using perhaps a computer program for this to scan the differences in color Spectrum. The human eye can only perceive but so much, therefore all this talk about quantum dot technology putting forth a wider color spectrum is actually a moot question? This is only to brainwash people into buying a TV because they think they’re getting something super fabulous and the best on the market, stick to an Oled and you’ll be fine.
Did you see my video on the pointlessness of BT2020? You're right, as long as the TV puts out over 95% DCI P3, you're pretty much covered until content (other than games) takes full advantage of the wider gamut.
Assuming that future TVs might move away from 10 but panels to 12 bit ones especially considering that is within Dolby Visions specs doesn’t it make sense that full BT2020 coverage will become important?
While Fomo points out TCL could look at buying up Kateeva and getting it's engineers then at least Samsung would no longer be bank rolling the research and development for them (the chinese might have been happy to wait a year or two and then come in with their own version). To beat Samsung to the quantum dot colour filter they now need to invest more and research more which would effect their overall price and would still be down to how they choose to implement, market and sell it. I'm not a fan of the Chinese brands based on the quality I've seen from them and I'd prefer to stick with a trusted and none chinese brand like Sony, LG, Panasonic, Philips etc. Good luck to Samsung on beating them with it and I think this whole thing is swings and roundabouts, maybe for a year or two they worry if the Chinese get their first but after that? Then they've set the precedent that they'll do their own in-house research and the Chinese will have to as well to keep up.
While I generally like your videos, I think you missed a few points and made some leaps of faith. 1. Who did anyone do a deep dive to see if Samsung tried to acquire KAteeva? 2. Like all of Samsung advancements, they only innovate on existing tech.. ala iGalaxy mimicking iPhone. 3. If at first, you can't bring it into the fold, you deny your adversary the same capability 4. If SEMES starts a patent submission vomit, you will have your answer. 5. They already make "the wall" ala micro-led....
Great points, I'll try to address them: 1. These discussions are always subject to non-disclosure so we'll never know unless it's leaked anonymously 2. Almost. The existing tech is quantum dots, but somebody has to create a definitive use case with clear requirements (superior better performing requirements!) so that it can be a next generation product - you still have to pioneer the use case by building out unique solutions for tooling and manufacture not yet implemented by anybody else. 3. Agree, classic strategy that works as well 4. LOL yep, and as Kateeva has not yet winded down its business and is trying to salvage anything with a CEO replacement, we'll see how long K lasts before giving up completely 5. I'm beginning to think the Wall as currently implemented is not viable for consumers. After my discussion with the Rohinni CEO, it's apparent that the tooling required to precisely manage microLED RGB pixels is incredibly expensive and will take time, a long time. Samsung needs something to bind it over until then (4 to 5 years out)
@@stopthefomo The last batch of Samsung TVs (2008-2015) I owned have awful ATSC tuners and menu interfaces and way overpriced.
3. If at first, you can't bring it into the fold, you deny your adversary the same capability
4. If SEMES starts a patent submission vomit, you will have your answer.
5. They already make "the wall" ala micro-led....
Great points, I'll try to address them:
1. These discussions are always subject to non-disclosure so we'll never know unless it's leaked anonymously
2. Almost. The existing tech is quantum dots, but somebody has to create a definitive use case with clear requirements (superior better performing requirements!) so that it can be a next generation product - you still have to pioneer the use case by building out unique solutions for tooling and manufacture not yet implemented by anybody else.
3. Agree, classic strategy that works as well
4. LOL yep, and as Kateeva has not yet winded down its business and is trying to salvage anything with a CEO replacement, we'll see how long K lasts before giving up completely
5. I'm beginning to think the Wall as currently implemented is not viable for consumers. After my discussion with the Rohinni CEO, it's apparent that the tooling required to precisely manage microLED RGB pixels is incredibly expensive and will take time, a long time. Samsung needs something to bind it over until then (4 to 5 years out)
never buy Samsung unless you want a commercial after commercial shoved down your eyes
I don't own anymore Samsung TVs or monitors now ...only have TCL TVs and LG monitors !
Best bang for the buck? How did Samsung fail you? Biggest complaints I hear are about customer service
@@stopthefomo The last batch of Samsung TVs (2008-2015) I owned have awful ATSC tuners and menu interfaces and way overpriced. I couldn't believe that an inexpensive no name Seki TV performed better at locking in channels than a Samsung unit at the same location. TCL's current batch of Roku TVs are an OTA enthusiast's dream with signal meter visible with every channel select and I can get a detailed report on signal strength and quality with every TCL TV that is connected to my network using Roku's network URLs. Try getting the signal strength of your TCL TV that is connected to your network with the following URL address: XXX.XXX.X.XXX:XXXX/query/tv-active-channel. XXX = network IP of your TCL TV from the Settings page.
It's only a matter of time until tcl dethrone samsung to become biggest and best tv manufacturer in the world all this while lg and Sony and Panasonic's have the oled burn in disease
Delays are already coming, Hisense H9G won’t be available until Summer 2020, was originally set for April release date
That sucks.
Eduardo Serralvo Gil totally got news today after asking on Hisense FB page, was waiting any day now, but after this it’s like do I just wait for the dual cell in fall and compare to see what better? Hisense rollouts always are delayed
@@Soldier-cu7hx Dual Cell is going to be double the price of Highsense H9G. Maybe even more than that. Probably more actually. 2500+
BD naw, not if their trying to undercut OLED, I say $1700-$2200, plus they still have to compete with Vizio OLED this year so marking up dual cell won’t be smart at all, if dual cell 1st gen is over $2000 I’ll just get an OLED, if they make it $2500 that would just be dumb as hell marketing wise
Nice find - interesting that the H8G (75") is currently available at Best Buy.
🤔 interesting 🤗
I want a fomo coronavirus mask
Samsung deserves to fail. I really hope they do.
So no to Made in China.
True. I always look for that. No to chinese companys
Ooops...
Forgot to wear your mask did you?
