- Back from the day when rock was rolling and drugs were the corner stone of any nutritious meal. Joe Cocker and the psychedelic love band Mad Dogs & Englishmen gives their rendition of the classic Space Captain, urging us all to learn how to live together. We still haven't gotten it, so the message is worth a listen. Enjoy rock history.
This song provides a good enough reason to live. I'm 70 now and dying of advanced prostate cancer (with spinal mets) pretty soon. When I first heard this song in 1970, I was two years out of Nixon's Army, trying to study at Berkeley in the midst of teargas clouds. If I decide to take the legal / lethal prescription, Space Captain will be playing on my way out. Too bad we still haven't learned to live together; as the Thai say, "Next life, never mind!" Peace out.
i hope your transition from this life to the next is peaceful and full of love. thank you for your service in a war you should not have been in. space captain is even more relevant for todays society than ever. i was born in 71 and my mum says i used to rock back and forth and ooohhh and ahh in all the right places in my walker. this song and the whole album are part of my soul. my first words were joe cocker ! "we all forgot we could fly" i hope you have remembered how to. x
All good thoughts to you
dear Barry
Barry all the best
Barry Bates
I'm so sorry Barry. Music is the thing that keeps life in perspective and let's us reminisce the past when the world was free and easy and a better place to live in.
For me... this album and the Allmans Fillmore are the two best live albums ever!!! No overdubs.. No Auto Tune... Nothing but great musicians and singers..
Those two "live" LPs always seem to get the most votes for best of their kind.
Well, on the album there are some vocal overdubs because the back up singers sang out of tune ...
well said and very true.
We sure need you now Joe and Leon
this is the artistry and soul of LEON ! AS FAR AS ARRANGEMENT AND PRODUCTION . AND YES......Joe DELIVERED!
I heard him/all of them at Winterland and was totally blown away. What a show. what musicians. What an era.
Am still learning first heard this song tonight 08/31/2020 73 years old Tell me again why Joe Coker isn’t in the rock and roll hall of fame
It,s now 2024, and a new class of inductees and still no joe cocker.
I am beginning to hate the RRHOF more every year. Inexcusable.😢
Joe and Leon, what a duo! Fantastic song....We miss you Joe. RIP.
and we miss you Leon
That sweet humble man walks up to the mic with the worlds best musicians backing him and blows the roof off is none other than the late great JOE COCKER.
RIP Thanks for the soulful music!!!
RIP Joe 05/20/1944-12/22/2014..sad, simply sad.
Mad Dogs & Englishmen in my TOP 10 favourite ablums of all time.
Joe & Leon, mesmerizing & tantalizing.
GOD, I LOVE THIS ONE...Lots of us were called Space Ladies then...I was a Velvet Space Lady! Times were great then, WE were all improving...we were trying to be WE, everyone together...what happened?
Feels so amazing! I love music that is like sunshine.
As each day passes I am appalled at the amount of hate & distrust, necessary emphases being placed on differences, rather than what we have in common, on this planet earth, which after all is the only place we have to live together. Yes I do realise the forces of evil who plague what should be Universal Love & Understanding, which we should try to encourage to grow. If we don't find some kind of unity in strength for the good of the whole, we would surely join those who feed negativity, hatred & those who seem to be hell bent on ensuring there is no future in Peace & Understanding for all. Please join me in trying to put out the magic of positivity in the hope that good prevails over darkness.
Man had more soul in one note than most artists do in their whole discography. Him and Ray Charles are the gatekeepers of soul and I don’t see anyone ever challenging them. Rest In Peace Joe
R.I.P Joe. Great song, great message.
i wonder why every song was so good back then and yet not every song is good nowadays (rhetorical question) again, i used to lay in bed with the headphones on, high as a dirigible, fm stereo was new and so good then...ooh...ah...ooh...ah...god i love this tune!!!!!!!!!!!
...this was a good concert, back in Detroit. ...back in the day. It's Good to be able to Go Back There through this video.
Great message, love to all!
Tonight Joe and Leon are rockin' the choir in heaven! As a young adult of the late 60's this was the music that stuck with me as my favorite. Saw Mad Dogs and Englishmen at The State Fair Music Hall in Dallas TX. I sill remember the electricity in the air and the smell of . . . . well you know!
ABSOLUTE FAVORITE.
It's so special that we have this to listen to today and appreciate again how great a group of musicians this was
Aside from being my favourite album of all time, Mad Dogs & Englishmen legitimately depresses me sometimes because there's absolutely nothing any band could ever do to surpass it - the crazy tour, the songs, the band, the happy vibes, the unrehearsed chaos of 20+ people on stage at once... this is as good as music is ever gonna get, and it's all downhill from here!
Makes me think of the big bands like Duke Ellington -- it became clear that taking that many people on the road was just not financially viable. Sigh.
saw these guys at the upstate campus at new paltz. also that week-end: jefferson airplane and the youngbloods [jesse colin young].
mescaline and cheap red wine. the joys of being 19!!!
So many of my “I wish I had a time machine!” moments involve Joe Cocker
couple good shots of the lovely Pamela Polland.
This tour man....literally a star studded act.
Im 14 and I'm sooo sorry what my generation did to music... Joe cocker is king
@PastaBender
the choir is listed as Don Preston/Rita Coolidge/Claudia Lennear/Daniel Moore/Donna Weiss/Pamela Polland/Matthew Moore/Donna Washburn/Nicole Barclay/Bobby Jones
Joe rest in peace
Great stuff -- and oh! Leon!!
Mr. Leon, and Joe. .losing everybody these days. very sad.
Joe ne s'en ets jamais remi...!!!!
One ova kind RIP
Man, looks like you have many songs from the same concert... Don't you have a playlist of it? It's an amazing performance, would be great to listen to all of the songs.
genial interpretacion
@MrAlphafox Truer words have never been spoken. Very nicely said!
The video of "With a little help from my friends" from the Mad Dogs tour with Leon etc is IMO one of the greatest moments in music ever captured. I watched it so many times. Now that very clip has been removed from the Tube. Does anyone know why?
Perfect ;)
I like the first sentence in the description. :)
Frickin Leon Russell and Jim Gordon.....????? Holy Sh&%!!!!!!
Check out Tedeschi Trucks Band...they have the same vibe, musicianship and great songs!
THANKS! it sure looked like bonnie. fabulous, either way.
He's waiting for that letter to say ok get home as fast as you can today
Who is the strawberry blonde background singer with the granny glasses? She's in a lot of these Mad Dog videos but I never see her credited.
Could be Kathi McDonald, she sang with Mad Dogs and Englishman, and the Stones on Tumbling Dice, and Big Brother and the Holding Company stepping in for Janis. Also the only white Ikette with the Ike and Tina Turner Review. We all change so much from when we were young but it could be her.
+Don F
Not Kathi Mcdonald. She wasn't on the Mad Dogs tour
Donna Washburn. An old girlfriend of Leons. She is a well known backup singer. Sang on a lot of Leonard Cohen's work.
And who is the hot brunette sharing the mic with her?
they don't make them like this any more..
There will never be anyone like Joe Cocker and Leon Russell...........never again.
Or Johnny Almond.............
Leon with the on-point accompaniment, and running an entire hippie commune onstage like it's the easiest thing in the world.
There will never ever be another Leon Russell. I miss you every single day. Rest peacefully.
This is the Joe Cocker I remember. MAD DOGS AND ENGLISHMEN is one of the greatest live albums ever. Spearheaded by the great Leon Russell.
Lynn Turman You're spot on Lynn. Good songs, excellent musicians, back up singers perfect, Joe Cocker the last piece of the puzzle.
Lynn Turman Definitely! I have it on vinyl and CD.
I just ordered the DVD of the film off Amazon. I remember my parents hauling me to a drive-in theater to see it.
truth that
So what do you think of it? I saw the show live, it was the best one ever!
Simply put - one of the best singers and entertainers of the the 60's & 70's. We were all "Space Captains" back then and still am at age 62. One of the best live albums of all time - Mad Dogs and Englishmen - double vinyl album. No one put as much emotion and energy into singing as Joe. He may be gone but not forgotten - his legacy lives on through the music of our time. No fancy digital effects - just raw R&B - so saddened to hear of his passing.
Don't ya know Heaven's got some great music going on with Joe and Leon there now.. I bet it's like " Ok all you Angels... I want all of you to put the hymnals away. With these two here we don't need no song books!"
Joe cocker I got his autograph at a hotel in Albany NY one beautiful person I miss him I tripped to him at Woodstock
Leon Russell so cool and collected. Such a great performer and writer and musician. Joe Cocker an amazing singer and performer
Leon playing guitar 🎸 and he is so good. !
Leon's Proud Blue-Green Top Hat was a gift from Gram Parsons and it was found in a Hollywood Thrift Shop, inside the brim was written "Al Jolson" the hat had been used in the original Talkie The Jazz Singer !
Yep true and it's a great story. Think Gram gave it to Leon at Burbank Airport when he left to start the tour!
what a time to be alive..amazing music.
I was part of the TIME ... Ruth and your observation is SOOO CORRECT Stay well
This album, “Mad Dogs and Englishmen” (1970), and the Allman Brothers’ “At Fillmore East” (1971), probably among (or maybe) the greatest live recordings ever!!! Still great after 50 years!!!
I was at the Fillmore East for the Allman Brothers. Berry Oakley almost made me quit playing bass!
In my humble opinion, the absolute best live performances ever was 22 minutes of Queen at Live Aid, but that was a different decade.
Can't argue with your other choices tho.
Both are great. I consider Waiting for Columbus by Little Feat as a contender too.
CHARLES YOU HAVE MY TICK OF APPROVAL STAY WELL
Agree!
Loved the way Leon Russell conducts the band and singers ... effortless cool!!
I saw Mad Dogs and Englishmen perform in Los Angeles back in the early 1970’s and Leon’s musical arrangements were tattooed upon my mind. I moved to Dallas a few years ago and listen to Texas gospel music on the radio every morning. Leon’s Texas musical roots are tied in there.
master of time and space
Leon defined 'cool'
Joe Cocker is amazing, but don't let the album title fool you -- this is Leon Russell's show.
@@gleng1 - but of course!!! Goes without saying!! 😁
Can't believe these guys actually toured. Such a spectacular ensemble.
Ole' Joe always playing air drums with his left hand and lead guitar with his right. Man I miss him. RIP Space Captain
Love the description of "spastic"!
This has always been my favorite from the tour. I don't know why it didn't get more AirPlay back then. Probably because all the songs were so good. I mean this was the "B" side to the Letter on the single. Mad Dogs still the best tour ...I'm going to get the DVD just to relive this. I have the vinyl but it's pretty wore out. Rip Joe thanks for the music
What a great artist! Always gave 100% to his audience. Bless you Joe wherever you are.
My planet was made a great planet with people like Joe Cocker Leon Russell and a way out there band called Mad Dogs and English man. Thanks for making my journey a great journey guys. RIP
RIP.Joe Cocker (May 20,1944 - December 22,2014)
Joe Cocker was the Most Amazing Performer I Have Ever Seen..
I Saw Him at the New Fillmore on Market st..S.F.
He was with the Grease Band..I Had Never Heard of Him
He was Playing with P.G.E....& the Byrds..
I was siting on the Floor 10 ft Back from the Stage w/My Guitar Player Alan..
Someone Had Given Everyone Acid..By time Joe Cocker
Came on ..Everyone was Flying.
It was Scairy Like Someone Had Plugged Him into a Light Socket
.The Energy coming From Him was Awesome..
Thoughts of "What are they Doing to Him??? What is He doing to Us??
By the End He WAS GOD!!!Whatever he was doing ..Was Right..
If I could Do that on Stage Just One Time..I Could Die Happy..
So Have I Ever Seen GOD ON ACID..YES..and He WAS JOE COCKER..
The greatest concert I ever saw, Detroit Michigan, March !970 Eastown Theater Harper and Van Dyke Joe Cocker and Mad Dogs and Englishman. Rock on Joe.
I was there too! It was THE BEST concert ever. Love that whole gang.
Im so annoyed I never attended, mind you I was only 11yrs old and in the UK, grrrrr
I was there, too and it is still the greatest concert I ever attended,
Amazing performer!!! Joe Cocker liberates more energy than modern death metal!!
man ! when i die i hope to find the original Woodstock gig rockin the house upstairs !
goodbye Space Captain... see you then !
Fly on, Space Captain. I hope you got your memory back.
Tribal rock..once and (sadly) only once. Watch and learn children.
Leon Space Captain #2 now in heaven, RIP.
2019 - still learnin' to live togheter ✌️
Joe, you were a gifted Mad Dog and the very finest of Englishmen.
RIP Bobby Keys, RIP Joe Cocker
And The Master of space and time Leon Russell
Rest in peace my master of space and time
I saw this very crew in Tulsa, OK. and I wept. I wasn't the only one. The magic, soul, love, and TALENT on stage was just so wonderful. I have no words that fit how moved I was. The whole building moved !!!!!! SO happy you hear it, love it, and, GET it. You appear to be a young person. This makes me a happy woman.
pamela poland wow!
So when a certain gentleman called Tony Wheeler heard this song at a pub, he mistook the words 'lovely planet' for 'lonely planet' and named his fledgling business just that. Four decades later I started working there!
Mad Dogs was a hippie commune on a musical tour, an experiment in utopian community. The leader was Joe Cocker, the space captain, and the mission was to learn to live together. That is the mission of all human beings. When we complete that mission we will fly up to the sky again. You are great Joe!
The leader of this group was “the master of space and time” Leon Russell.
@@jamescampbell9533 it fell to Leon Rossell to remain in Joe's shadow. Leon was the producer and musical leader but Joe's apocalyptic power shone with its own ligth
Yep, great show at Winterland.
You’re more correct than you know, altho returning to the sky ain’t heaven.
We’re all just aliens. Or, rather, the “gods” are aliens. We’re the experiment, and we’ve been at the 11th hour for a hot minute now. Most think we’re not gonna make it…luckily, a select few still believe. I’m starting to have serious doubts.
@@jamescampbell9533This is an accurate take
I saw this concert but at the Fillmore East. My first & best concert & I've seen them all...
Exactly how I feel. Saw their first show in Detroit. What a band, what singing and songs. It was like one big party on stage.
Fillmore West for me. God what great times.
RIP Joe. One of the GREAT voices xxx
RIP Leon. God Bless you. You are the Space Captain. And now you are with the angles.
Look at the beautiful hands on the piano: that's my favourite player -and many other favourite... started so many; inspired many others. We love you Leon (in case you are wondering).
Yes to all of that. My all time forever favorite music man.
giftsdirector, I too love those hands., and the man. Wouldn't it be nice if someone made a movie on the life of this intriguing musical genius Leon Russell?
Feel like having this on repeat all day today :( Joe Cocker beautiful soul xxx
a great left our planet today ..RIP Joe Cocker
thoughts go out to Leon today
one of my favorite songs of that great era
Leon, master of time and space
especially relevant this week; I miss you Leon!
Def one of his best. I get the chills watching him sing this.
A truely great gathering of very talented mucsicians..mystically insnspirring to me
RIP to Leon Russell on the Keys as well
Two words “Leon Russel” 😇
Black soul, white soul, Hispanic soul are irrelevant categorisations. Joe WAS SOUL epitomised! Ira Lee, Ph.D.
This tour was a moment of rock bliss.
... the likes of which we shall never see again ...
Leon jammin that piano
Just learning to live together that's what we need, thanks Joe. R.I.P.
Learning to live together 'till we die...
R.I.P. Joe
Ya gotta Love what Leon Gives to this tune on that Piana, Leon, Your the man
One of the all time greats who just gave so much love and humanity.
This song captures it and is more needed today than ever before.
Thanks for so much Joe, God Bless and R.I.P.
