Thank you. When you were explaining how Helmut designed a parka, I thought that it is soo important to know the fashion history, the history of the clothes we wear. When we know this, the clothing stops being just a thing we put on. It has a history, so it has a meaning, you start wearing clothes in a conscious way. With a thought behind every item. Wow! I love that kind of analysis.
i dont mean to be offtopic but does anyone know of a trick to get back into an Instagram account?? I stupidly lost the password. I appreciate any assistance you can offer me!
This is my favorite channel on UA-cam. I have never seen breakdowns of labels in fashion like this. I never knew so much about fashion in my life. I’m 15 and my dream is to be a fashion designer and you have been a huge factor in helping me learn more and more everyday as well as helping me achieve my dream. Thanks man✌🏼
Entering my mid twenties and having worked a typical white collar corporate job for a couple of years has made me appreciate designers such as Raf Simons and Helmut Lang so much more. Thanks for uploading such top notch content.
I've been re/discovering different designers and I have come to love the subtleties of Helmut Lang and him being unpretentious, just doing "soul works" ✨
Streetwear is a mix of many cultures. Current trend is mostly based on skate wear. No designer is the father of streetwear. Some took it to the runway and high fashion, but streetwear was already there.
I grew up when Helmut was becoming the buzz and moved to NYC. He belongs to the group of deconstructionist. Minimalist??? Yes and no. Purists??? Yes and no. But more than anything, his looks are always urban!!! Not minimalist but city dwelling folk looks. Hence his silhouettes tend to be not voluminous. Btw, minimalist and purists tend to intertwine. The difference is minimalist makes clothes, and style them in a very basic way. Purists designers tend to focus on fabric and toying around seams, darts, even volumes. Balenciaga is a purist and helmut Lang has purist tendencies too esp with garment constructions.
Thats funny that Raf was also inspired for his "Riot Riot Riot" Collection by the Ukrainian and Romanian youth who he would see at Vienna's flea market that would layer their clothes mixed with the military surplus garments
This is a statement made by you and the culture which distinguishes your faucets, a nice balance between the caricature in Instagram and the knowledge behind the one in position. Very well done. Yours truly
"there wasn't a lot going on" in 90s fashion ? british fashion in particular was being transformed in the 90s with designers like McQueen, good video for sure but to say that is definitely questionable, the 90s was when fashion was beginning to stray away from the stuffy and flash appearance it had in the 80s
i think what he means was that in the late 80's/beginning of the 90s, a lot of stuff was couture but that the 90s was the era in which "streetwear" (i know that term wasn't used back then) and clothes that were usually not considered "fashion" started to become more artistic, and that helmut, along with people like margiela were poineers in that way. cmiw
Hello I am the publisher of the book "1986-2005 Helmut lang", which records Helmut's archive collection. i Watch your this video today. That's really good contents!
I think this video was very informative and insightful... up until the part where you called Virgil a cash-grabbing Nigerian, proceeding to pantomime neo-nazi rituals. But nevertheless, I would love to see a video on Margiela next.
First time I've seen one of your videos. Thanks for this! So refreshing to hear someone describe and analyze fashion in an unpretentious way :) Keep it up!
I love how Helmut Lang's general vibe is "it's the apocalypse, but we still have to go to work" No idea why i would connect to that or find it relatable. No reason whatsoever. Currently wearing my HL tencel wrap blouse which makes me appreciate draping every time i wear it
Those are not bondage jackets but parachute jackets . I still have 1 on olive green mint condition with the price tag on . I love that collection and has a few of them in long sleeves tees with waist straps . I was wearing Helmut Lang in the 90s til he sold his brand to Prada . Love his designs . He puts Designer’s Jeans to the next level . I still have those jeans including the rubber paint jeans though it peels already . The signature bondage jeans I still have it unworn that is so iconic .
I remember buying Helmut Lang's clothes when he was still designing it -- You didn't have to "understand" his design, you bought the clothes because they were cool, and because you didn't want to dress like your dad.
It sounds a lot like what Margiela did back in the day. If you want to know more about him you should watch the Dutch/Flemish film about him called: We Margiela. It's a really good and extensive documentary on him, his work and the team
co to ma być unfortunately it’s only available with Dutch subtitles and mostly Dutch/flemish spoken... Maybe you can contact them through Instagram and ask if there’s a way to get it with English subs?
Karsten please tell me what’s the name of the 2nd song in the background of this video I’m going crazy it sounds like cigarettes after sex but I’m sure I’m wayy off :(
Virgil copied Peter saville for Off white not Helmut. Ur not even explaining anything just saying “really cool” after everything. reading off notes you took after watching the “anti fashion” video on yt.
nice video man, its been a week that i've learnt a lot from this playlist, hope you'll continue this series, can I have the song that plays in the background btw?
Thanks jimmy! Glad you liked the videos ! The song in the beginning is Camp Orchestra by Show Me the Body, and the second song is Nothings Gonna Hurt You Baby by Cigarettes after Sex
Pardon me, your perspective is incorrect. Minimalism is more apt, but in context, Helmut Lang's style is not street fashion at all. As previous comment stated, it is urban, utilitarian and 'heightened' workwear. Vivienne Westwood, John Galliano were doing streetstyle, anti-couture/fashion a decade before (80s). Please do more reseach. Appreciate your effort put in, you get a C+. You need to go deeper.
