It's truly sad to see Peter Do leaving Helmut Lang. He was a creative director who deeply understood the brand's identity and knew how to reference its legacy in a way that felt both respectful and forward-thinking. His vision was exactly what the brand needed to stay relevant while honoring its roots
I think the thing here is that no one actually *knows* what version of a rebranded helmut lang should look like cuz once again as I mentioned, it's really hard to grasp. The problem is that it is FAR TOO EARLY to kick someone out after 1.5 years. There were rumours however that Peter Do was overspending a little bit, not sure if that's the sole reason why he left the brand. Just words on the street.
Interesting essay. I agree with it and I like your nuanced approach to the subject. Also, it's nice how you went back on it and changed your initial perspective about the collections. Unfortunate timing tho hahaha, would have been hard to predict :(
i think budget is the real problem, fast retailing might not be it for the brand. the clothes looked cheap. No designer, no matter how good he is, can get blood out of a stone.
Exactly, that's why I said my appreciation for Lang isn't on the aesthetic of. the clothes but simply the impact of the brand. That's why the revival of Helmut Lang should not aim to redo what Lang did, it should have something new, net new.

basically people or management just want a uniqlo-ed version of helmut lang

oh boy, helmut lang in the 90s was like the gap, but cynical for the rich gen x. try doing that today, it's almost impossible for it to succeed
