  • After hearing about the last abandoned street in Liverpool I had to go check it out and see if the community was really that bad.

Those were obviously once very decent double-fronted houses. Criminal that they aren't being used.

Meanwhile, Liverpool City Council have an unprecedented number of homeless people and millions of our hard earned cash is being used to keep them in hotel accommodation they don’t want to be in. Absolute disgrace that there are empty properties anywhere in this country.

This is like the boarded-up streets around Anfield as the football club's wealthy foreign owners patiently waited to bulldoze a local community out of existence. Not 'You'll Never Walk Alone'. More like 'You'll Never Live Round Here'.

What happened was, immigrants & black people got moved into them ,starting around the late 60s, they never looked after their properties, hence the mess, remember, slums are not built, but created by people.

I Googled it... The street belongs to Liverpool council.
Apparently it was built for Welsh workers in the 19th century. It became a multicultural area, but the area declined very badly, with slumlords and overcrowded houses with bad living conditions. Black people were stuck there due to racism.
Locally it was always known as Liverpool 8 (as in the album by local band The Real Thing, called "4 from 8") but the media referred to it as Toxteth in the riots.
There was a scheme in which people could buy a home for £1 provided they showed they had the money to renovate them (and, I assume, would live there for a set period).
Ducie Street seems to have got left behind.
Been a lot of local efforts to try to get renewal, according to Wiki, hampered by local and national government

    • @HangTheTraitors157
      @HangTheTraitors157 6 місяців тому +7

"It became a multicultural area" - Meaning that African seafarers jumped ship and illegally set up home in the area.
"Black people were stuck there due to racism." Meaning, as the African population grew so did crime, drugs, neglect and white flight - Nothing surprising there.

    • @Welshstreets

Thank you for talking sense,I can remember the area when black people were penned in.Some people don't have a clue what Liverpool 8 was like in the 80's.They may have went to score a bit of weed there or have distant relatives who lived there. They didn't actually live there themselves.

The Granby "community" destroyed their own area and fled up the road to Lodgey.
They now want re-housing anywhere except Smithdown Road because it's full of . . . . . foreigners.
    The irony !
PS I'm from there, before you call me a racist.

Oh so true. Upper Parley, Lodge Lane - notorious for criminality and violence from a certain sector of the "community" when I was growing up in Liverpool in the 70's and 80's. They came here from the 3rd world and turned the place into a toilet - but it's always whitey's fault due to his racism! 🤣

These houses were initially owned by middle class people close to both smart Victorian parks Princess and Sefton - they were occupied in the 60’s by immigrants and sadly many of the streets in this area were abandoned by the City Council after the riots in 1980 - there are many good people in this area with a fantastic sense of community - shame on you the Labour/Liberal led City Councils - more should have done more to help especially with so much European funding coming the City,s way and then squandered.

I lived on upper parliament street in the early fifties, from our house we could see straight down Granby street. It was a thriving and a very busy shopping area most f the shops were Jewish owned or run. Fast forward to the eighties it looked abandoned all the buildings were boarded up. How an area changes when the people don't have pride in it.

Up at the top of Granby street, where it, I think I re bet correctly, joined Princess street, there were heroin dealers hanging about day and night. I remember when Somalis were put there after the civil war, I used to think, poor b*stards, they’ve managed to escape the carnage there, and where do they end up, Granby Steet, Liverpool!😱😟

      I've good memories of Granby.
Liverpool Council stabbed Liverpool 8 in the back. The only people who ever got any grants had connections in the council. They let the rest of the residents hang.

These are what's called the Welsh streets. There are 10 streets built in the 1870's by Welsh migrants. They were all to be demolished and replaced with 375 new houses. The bruiser who was mayor of Liverpool at the time had everything
signed sealed and ready to be delivered. Then it was contested and the Communities sec at the time, Mr PIckles,
rejected the councils plan stating that it was an historic community and it should be regenerated ( totally correct)
The mayor apparently spent the day spitting feathers and getting aroused by looking at pictures of student
accommodation complexes (his favourite thing )
