    In one of your recent videos, you said something like, some photographers speak of light in too complicated terms, maybe from not wanting to reveal the "tricks of the trade" by making it sound more complicated than it really is. You make it sound just right, John. Common sense, free of the fluff. So many important details and life saving advice! Thank you for that! The more reason, you film, edit, prepare videos for us for free. That's gold! Great person, natural teacher you are. Thank you, John, stay safe, blessings from Croatia!

      @@JohnGress After watching the second time, now I have two questions about outdoor flash (which I don't have much experience with, but willing to try): 1. Do you use TTL mode or manual mode + flash meter just like in the studio when shooting outdoors with flash? I think when shooting outdoor you'll have to move around a lot, remeter every time you move might slow things down quite a bit. 2. Do you tend to use a shoot-through or reflective umbrella when shooting outdoors and why? Thanks in advance!

    • @JohnGress
      @JohnGress  3 роки тому

      1) My flash meter only goes up to 1/1000 of a second and often times outdoors I am shooting at 1/4000 or 1/8000, so I will use TTL to get a starting point, then I will switch into manual and dial in the flash or flashes where I want them. 2. I don't own any shoot through umbrellas, but here is a list of ll of the gear I use. johngress.com/more-information/whats-in-our-bag/ Normally I use a 135cm octa outside.

    Are the wooden floors in your photos wooden panels you created, or are they mats with floorboard designs?
    The tip about making sure light hits the subject's upper eyelids is a good one. Nice and specific. I will use that instead of wasting multiple shots until the eyes "look right".

    Hi John
    Good video but saying avoid up-lighting is wrong IMO. It depends on the goal for the photograph. Yes ok most light sources we see day to day are from above but no all are.
    Optical snoots eat light, you need to be putting 500ws and up through them.
    During my last assisted studio hire I had a 1200ws light pushing through it. ISO 200 1.160th, F5.6 and have had 3200ws on the go when assisting a commercial food photographer to obtain F10 AT iso 100.

    • @JohnGress
      @JohnGress  2 роки тому

      Very good point Richard. I think I have moderated my messaging over time. As for the snoot shooting at f10 ISO 100 would almost require multiple pops on a slow exposure with regular lights.

    Can I ask, the conical snoot that you linked includes a 50mm Yongnuo lens, can the snoot be purchased without the lens and if so can any nifty fifty be used instead?
    Thanks in advance, and keep the videos coming!

    • @JohnGress
      @JohnGress  3 роки тому +1

      Thank you so much! The lens has to have full time manual focusing and many lenses require electronic power to operate. So you can use any lens that you can for us without the camera. The knockoff nifty fifty is one $30. Maybe comparing that to a canon lens could be the next video!

    I have a question. I'm interested in using an optical snoot. I currently have a Godox SL-150W continuous light. Is that enough power going through the optical snoot? If not, what is the wattage would you recommend in a continuous light or strobe to get good results? Thanks.

    • @JohnGress
      @JohnGress  2 роки тому

      Hi Eric, I thank your light will be too dim to work with the snoot. You will probably want a flash around 400-600ws like the AD400pro amzn.to/3QDS9GE

Do you think they use 5600K daylight lights? There lights seems so milky white and background is dark or black mirror sort of. .
