The upper class in America is not based entirely on being rich. There are many families that have been around for centuries with a blue-blood tradition, and they turn their backs on the vulgar Nouveau Riche types. Being upper class is cultural and educational-based; connections with other such families and their milieux; and a certain sense of Noblesse Oblige. Money is certainly important, but it is by no means the key that unlocks all social doors.

In Ireland we don't have much of a class system because almost everybody was an impoverished farmer only 3 generations ago.
When I lived in Britain for a while it never ceased to amaze me how much peope are defined by class.
I easily blended into the "better" classes because my accent and behaviour didn't fit me into ANY British class pigeon-hole.
They assumed I was upper class....That suited me, an ordinary guy, just fine !

@@mattbarbarich3295 The Scots don't set much store by those wealthly aristocrats because they know exactly how they grabbed so much land and got so rich. Most of them are absentee landlords, anyway. The Dane, on the other hand, understands Scots values, especially the right to roam, and is helping to renature the land and create jobs.
But apart from that, there is a deep-rooted spirit of egalitarianism in Scotland. Look up Robert Burns' poem "A Man's a Man for a' That"

@@alicemilne1444 Yes I agree with what you say, the Danish family I have read about a bit and the outpouring of genuine public grief when two of their children were killed. The highland clearings in 19th cen. were despicable,
Scotland now has to find a fine balance between its rich culture and traditions and the needs of the modern world fair to all. Cheers.

Social capital is who you know , rather than how many people you know …..I find this subject particularly interesting - despite my racial background - I was privately educated in a British boarding school and have parents who are lawyers - but I am married to a baronet and now have a title i have gotten to see the inside of the elite - and inside the elite almost nobody has enormous amounts of cash ! But they have lots of property ( that they often have to absolutely slave away to maintain) however everyone is privately educated - most people have extraordinarily good manners (hallmark of the elite) usually educated at boarding schools and nobody talks about money because its tacky , unless of course you wish to complain about not having much , which is completely socially acceptable.

The military is where the class system really stands out in the UK .As soon as a serviceman ( person ) opens their mouth you Know whether they are an officer or not . Australia or America not so . You are also asked when joining in the UK to say the word ' of ' . Pronounce it ' orff ' and you are automatically made an officer .

I don’t acknowledge class as a thing. Some have money, some don’t. I treat a good rich person the same as i treat a good poor person. If a rich or supposedly class person thinks they are better than me, that immediately shows me that they have LESS class than me. I do not acknowledge class. It is just something made up by people who feel the need to separate us. Prince Andrew would be defined as part of “high class”, but that clearly shows that class is meaningless.

A surgeon would be upper-middle class in the US. We have 5 classes total. Lower, working, lower middle, upper middle, upper. Occupation factors in a lot--a historian (like me) is not working class because it requires a good deal of higher education. A mechanic is working class, it doesn't require the higher education.

In retrospect, I believe it was the class system that caused me to relocate from UK to Japan. And more importantly, caused me to stay for two blocks of 20 years (40 years altogether). Possibly for cultural enrichment, more likely for economic enrichment, but from a long-term perspective it was the greater respect I got with the lack of a class system.

I think you’ll be surprised. Anyone in the military of the officer ranks is regarded highly in the middle and upper segments of society in England (probably Scotland as well).
When ex-officers become MPs they are addressed as the galant member of parliament for……. the only other profession are Lawyers/Judges who are referred to as learned.
Those with a peerage (Barons, viscounts, earls, marquesses, Dukes) would always try to get their sons a commission in the army or navy - think the Duke of Wellington.

I am of Indian descent (but not Indian), and I can tell you that the class system in modern India had very little to do with the caste system in the way you're thinking of it. In fact, what were traditionally the lower castes now have more opportunities for increasing their social, economic, and cultural capital above that of the traditional higher-caste Indians, and those same high-caste Indians are now villainised, many times unfairly in modern Indian society. In a nutshell, the caste system is not parallel to the class system. Just wanted to put that out there. :)

No idea where I fall. I work within health care and earn above minimum wage but I also claim universal credit as I have 2 children. I can afford a modest mortgage but can’t find homes cheap enough in my area so no capitol value. Have a first class honours degree so I’m educated but don’t actually have much social or cultural connections 🤔 probably working class but in regards to the poverty line I have always been below it. My mum was very lower class until she became a nurse and worked her way up and then became middle class so that’s what I aspire to do one day

"Australia doesnt have a Class System" 😂 . Sorry so much crap youve said and generalised. Come back in 20yrs when uve lived some more and experinenced life.
Lots of barons and lords in Britain are broke with crumbling country houses and little income and work hard physiclally to make ends meet. In the modern world anywhere class mobility is a lot more fluid and not so rigid as in past. Some people can all of a sudden have big income and wealth but little class or style to me so its a moot point.
I think basicly its how much school ing youve had and how you treat people esp the less fortunate you meet thats a sign of nobility and class.

Was in Oz for a year and a friend of mine always introduced herself with her name then say 3rd generation. Was obviously a badge of honour for her. Was pissed off when I said ,' so third generation means your closer to the convicts ?' Class system all became very silly a few years back when there appeared to be an effort to expand it to include 'technical middle class' who made there money presumably programming computers or some other incomprehensible technical wizardry. They weren't really middle class and sat (unsurprisingly) JUST BELOW actual middle class. Why not JUST ABOVE ? The answer to that tells you all you need to know about the class system in the UK.

Black Afro-Caribbeans are established enough to go in Middle Working Class by default, but often non-whites are not integrated enough to be part of the class system.

I think this new system of classification is rubbish, one neeeds a degree in domething just to work out where one sits within it. My Family were of the Merchant class as middle class was called in the 18th century. From my Grandfather back they were importers of exotic fruit and vegetables and owned Market Gardens in Kent. My Great Grandfather turned down the offer of being made a Baronet (Hereditary Sir) twice, he did not like the Establishment that much. My Grandfather sold the last ship the company owned (for scrap) as cheaper to charter a ship or hold space once refrigeration came in than own them. I suppose that makes me Middle class. My Grandfather had his occupation on his Marriage Certificate as Greengrocer, a slight understatement as owned six shops, the Market Gardens and the Import company. My Father was a career Naval Officer, I ended up a Taxi Driver/owner after giving up being a Journalist, did not like the direction the press was going.

It's a bit ignorant of you to think the British class system has white supremacy when it's probably one of the least xenophobic aspect of it. An african or asian or middle eastern person will be put at the same criteria for determining class. However, certain groups are discriminated against, namely the Irish, whose accent and names are viewed to be lower class. How you talk is more important than the colour of your skin, otherwise we wouldn't have many nonwhite PMs but all of them speak perfect RP English. You'd be discriminated against for being foreign but not for being nonwhite. Please don't throw out such disgraceful misinformation

The main part of "class" is how much money you have. At the very top of what used to be the "upper class" there is something other than money but for most of them, they want to know how much you spend, how you dress, what you drive and so on.
If you are poor, you will pay rent to live in a cr4p house, or worse , your entertainment will be the pub or your TV. If you have a car, it will not be very good and your kids will (sometimes) be at whatever school is around. Your clothes will not be great either. certainly Primark at best.
To be better paid, it helps that your parents were and even at the same school, they will have encouraged you to do better.
A well paid job indicates a better education. You may have had scholarships. Us older ones had student grants.
There are plenty of people who "talk posh" on average salaries. It does not always help. "Received Pronunciation" is not always useful, unless your parents were rich enough. You might have got ahead in some parts of the armed forces but not all of it.
Yes, there are people who have the right ancestors and grew up rich. They are a small number and apart from the Royal Family, get little deference for anything but their money.
