    Stuart you are the man who inspired me to paint at the age of 66 after listening /watching you clips for weeks on end. The day before we locked down with coronavirus $600 worth of art supplies arrived at my door. I can't thank you enough..big fan!

    Oh my goodness, I love the textures made by the brush bristles. I never heard that bit before about a dark sky at the top of the canvas giving the feeling that the sky is going over your head. As soon as you said it I thought “oh, yes, so it does”. I have learned so much in such a short time. Thank you so much.

    I've spent many years away from painting.
    Never really knowng what style i fell into, or what direction I was going in.
    I started my journey with water colour in my teens, fell into acrylics after a short period with oils; and before a long time giving up work caring for my grandmother I'd become very abstract led.
    You are enticing me towards oils once more and towards my beginnings with landscspe art.
    This time with a blank slate.
    Brilliant tuition!!!

    I love what you said there at the end. I believe there are no mistakes when painting. Just let yourself go and the painting will manifest. Broad ideas are all you need. Random strokes create opportunities you may not have seen before. If you stick to a strict vision then you’ll only end up letting yourself down. Every stroke does matter; just not in the same sense that many people believe it does. You’re a brilliant creator though and I applaud your work.

    I actually started watching your channel because you reminded me of one of my favorite 'tonal' artists, George Innes...have been in love with his work since I was a child; actually doing a piece right now that's inspired by him, except my landscapes are 'uncivilized'. This is a brilliant lesson, Stuart, LOVED the 'stopper', and such a beautiful painting ~thank you so much for sharing with us!

    "Movement in the sky" - that's very interesting! And "the stopper." I had noticed both of these elements in all of your paintings - but didn't understand the relevance of them. . . I can also see now how the wet on wet painting would serve the "movement in the sky" well. . . This is a marvelous tutorial. Thank you so much for taking the time to share this!

I met people who have spent decades in art courses, complaining about that the teacher didn't really shared their knowledge with their students, so this is very generous of you! I used your technique on the ground in a landscape painting and it turned out incredible!!! Decided to paint something on a plywood board and after gessoing it three times I used a yellow orange mixture for underpaint almost golden color and while still slightly wet used Sap Green with Burnt Sienna mix, slapped it on there quit wet and used the paper towel to wipe some areas away here and there with some heavier pressure in areas to take off the underpaint right to the white gesso.....when it dried back the affect was incredible....I'm calling it the Davies Technique.......The painting spoke to me and told me what to do next, what a relief seeing that I'm relatively a rookie painter.

    So far this is the best painting video I have seen. What I like, besides your style of painting and your soothing voice, is that you explain more of what your are thinking as you paint, rather than focusing on the mechanics of painting. I am a painter and an art teacher (and science). I always thought it was better to show my students how to think about what they are doing by demonstrating the thought process. Most of my teachers were either very laissez-faire or they were focused on the hard skills. You are inspiring, sir. Thanks, and I will now hunt down all of your vids.

    "Stopper"! So important to keep focus within the canvas, got that from another great painter, David Curtis of the UK. Also love the panoramic format here, really needed in this particular subject. Only drawback is the need to get a custom made frame for it; and hence pay a "confiscatory" price for it!!! So it better be worth it as an art work!! Beautiful piece by the way, worth the custom frame to be sure!! :D

    Really becoming obsessed with your work and tonalist paintings in general. I am quite enjoying and appreciating your recommendations of Bruce Crane and George Inness from this video, and have always enjoyed one of your other frequently referenced painters - John Constable
    I would very much like to know other artists you are inspired by. Besides the 3 mentioned above, what 4 or 5 other artists would you highly recommend studying the work of?
    Finally, can’t tell you how much your time, work and expertise put into your paintings and these videos means to me - truly appreciated... I am a nurse in a surgical intensive care unit, and your videos and work and learning to paint from you truly helps me at the end of a long hard day of work... so, basically, thank you, as always, for your work!

      @ Michael Parks Thanks! A certain amount of obsession is necessary to paint well! Type 'James Naughton artist' into Google - you'll be amazed. Superb demonstration. I note that you use only linseed oil to apply your paint but if you start with very oily paint how do you adhere to the fat over lean rule if you go on to add additional layers? I believe the usual way is to start with paint mixed with solvent then add more oil medium. I would be interested to know your thoughts on mediumd with oil.

    • @92Deepmr
      @92Deepmr 5 років тому +3

      Sorry but I think the fat over lean rule is only necessary where you work wet over dry. The artist is working wet on wet. So abiding by the fat over lean rule here is not essential.

  • @sannefridolin
    @sannefridolin 5 років тому +1

    I just discovered you today and I love your approach to painting. It feels very organic and loose and I like that you make your own rules. Does the linseed oil make the paint dry very slowly?

    • @StuartDavies
      @StuartDavies  5 років тому +1

      The oil I use has a drying agent added to it. It's usually touch-dry over night.

  • @susankievman642

    I wish beginning painting tutorials would take into account that new oil painters have a limited color pallette and limited more brushes. When you talk about Red Ocher and Sap Green, you should tell us how to get those colors from the basics.

    • @StuartDavies

      Yes, just linseed oil, and I clean the brushes with soap, not turpentine. The colours are very minimal at this stage. When it's dry enough I'll start to add more colour.

  • @dshepherd107
    @dshepherd107 2 роки тому

    Two questions if you find the time😊:
    1.) Is that a bit of yellow ochre, or yellow oxide you’ve used?
    2.) I see the way you’ve pushed the dark Payne’s Grey into the center of the cloud up near the top third, which gives the slight variations of colors & values, in each brush stroke, as they blend a bit w/ the paint underneath . I watched you make overlapping, short brush strokes (11:37- 11:38) , and later, it looks as if perhaps you blended/softened the strokes w/ a big brush? Neither this video, nor the second one show what technique you used to create that very interesting effect of these sort of vertical rows of darker puffy clouds that give the larger storm cloud a bowed convex look.
    I’m very intrigued with how you did that. I’m drawn to it every time i look at this video. Perhaps you might consider demonstrating your techniques to achieve an effect like this during one of the upcoming live Zoom classes? I’m guessing it took you all of 10 minutes to complete it, lol. I’m a 🐢 by comparison.

    Hello, I like your art. Just curious do you ever paint actual places? (in the event you wish to document a real landscape). Otherwise it would be correct to say this is an abstract I suppose.

    Are you using a clean brush to soften/blend the clouds?

      Sometimes, yes. It depends how lazy I'm feeling :-)
