I think Taiwan enjoys the full benefits of being recognised without an official recognition, and it's because the West needs to keeè the commerce of Rare earth elements active with China. It won't be forever, actually very soon China will be recognised as not third world in the WTO anymore, so no more tax breaks in commerce with China. At the same time Taiwan will probably be instated in the WTO meaning Taiwan will become the new and better China. With that, full recognition. Not before, or we'd have a full thermonuclear war on our hands.
Unfortunately, the US is the reason Taiwan has poor relations with China. It scrapped Taiwan's protection deal from China for a better diplomatic relationship with China. Edit: Just to clarify, I'm not blaming the US for the entire issue of Taiwan's independence. I'm referring to the US' retraction of protection of Taiwan (by no longer recognising Taiwan as officially independent) in 1980s which was a poor choice and has left Taiwan vulnerable leading to the current heightened tensions. A few things to correct here: 1. That interview clip you have of President Tsai Ing-Wei was not filmed THIS January. It was filmed in 2020 after her victory in the presidential election. I realise that this might be one of the few video resources of Taiwan you have because you had previously taken so little interest in the island, but it is coming from your own company and you should be more careful with that. 2. The mass immigration from Mainland China to Taiwan in recent history did not happen right after WWII, it happened after the end of the Chinese Civil War in 1949.

This video is informative regarding current events but is lacking important historical perspective. It is far too simplistic to say that Taiwan was divided from China as a consequence of the civil war in the 1940s. The period under Japanese rule (1895-1945) and before is also important, as are the reasons why Taiwan is known as Taiwan (Republic of China, or ROC) and why that is quite different from the People's Republic of China (PRC). I appreciate the piece was only 10 minutes, but another 30 seconds or so on history would help to clarify the reasons for the separation. Regarding the fact that Taiwan already sees itself as independent (as stated by President Tsai), this is clear to anyone that knows the country. They have their own laws, a fully democratic and freely elected government, their own military, currency and passports. The country is more freely visited than China (no visa needed from many countries) and the people have freedoms that those in China can only dream about.
The whole country functions more similat to Japan than to China. Everything is written in traditional chinese, not simplified chinese that is used in China. Translations on public transport are in either Japanese or English, it's overall just closer to Japan than China, if anyone was to "reclaim Taiwan as its property" it would make 100% more sense if Japan did so than China.
You could say all that, but hardly anyone recognises Taiwan as an independent nation. It's a fact that the Taiwan was a part of the mainland. Japan returned the land not to Republic of China nor the People Republic of China, but to the mainland and their people.

It is not just Taiwan, the international cooperation between American and European engineers, mainland Chinese suppliers and Taiwanese , South Korean and Japanese manufactures and so strong that any political intrusion causing huge disturbance around the world in many industries relying on semiconductors (it is used everywhere from car industries to agriculture). So controlling only one element of this chain does not give any advantage.
that may be the case today but remeber the last world war? lots of countries did some pretty amazing ramping up of production. If the need was there to throw the money and resources necessary into building new plants in the US or Europe with the added pressure of war on their doorsteps then i think you'd be surprised how quickly the rest of the world could make up for that loss in production. The main reason they do is is also because it helps them prvent war. China made it clear that they wont attack Chinese-territory unless it declares indepedence. Since Taiwan has yet to formally declare independence, they are still "Chinese-territory". But this doesnt mean they belong to PRC. It just means they are, again, a separate government ruling a Chinese-territory.

I think Taiwan enjoys the full benefits of being recognised without an official recognition, and it's because the West needs to keeè the commerce of Rare earth elements active with China. It won't be forever, actually very soon China will be recognised as not third world in the WTO anymore, so no more tax breaks in commerce with China.
At the same time Taiwan will probably be instated in the WTO meaning Taiwan will become the new and better China. With that, full recognition. Not before, or we'd have a full thermonuclear war on our hands.

I'm referring to the US' retraction of protection of Taiwan (by no longer recognising Taiwan as officially independent) in 1980s which was a poor choice and has left Taiwan vulnerable leading to the current heightened tensions. This changed in 2018, but I argue that this move by the US is to combat the "rise of China", rather than solely protecting Taiwan out of goodwill.

1. That interview clip you have of President Tsai Ing-Wei was not filmed THIS January. It was filmed in 2020 after her victory in the presidential election. I realise that this might be one of the few video resources of Taiwan you have because you had previously taken so little interest in the island, but it is coming from your own company and you should be more careful with that. 2. The mass immigration from Mainland China to Taiwan in recent history did not happen right after WWII, it happened after the end of the Chinese Civil War in 1949.

It is far too simplistic to say that Taiwan was divided from China as a consequence of the civil war in the 1940s. The period under Japanese rule (1895-1945) and before is also important, as are the reasons why Taiwan is known as Taiwan (Republic of China, or ROC) and why that is quite different from the People's Republic of China (PRC). I appreciate the piece was only 10 minutes, but another 30 seconds or so on history would help to clarify the reasons for the separation. Regarding the fact that Taiwan already sees itself as independent (as stated by President Tsai), this is clear to anyone that knows the country. They have their own laws, a fully democratic and freely elected government, their own military, currency and passports. The country is more freely visited than China (no visa needed from many countries) and the people have freedoms that those in China can only dream about.
The whole country functions more similat to Japan than to China. Everything is written in traditional chinese, not simplified chinese that is used in China. Translations on public transport are in either Japanese or English, it's overall just closer to Japan than China, if anyone was to "reclaim Taiwan as its property" it would make 100% more sense if Japan did so than China.
In summary, it's a much better country than China. Long Live Taiwan.

that may be the case today but remeber the last world war? lots of countries did some pretty amazing ramping up of production. If the need was there to throw the money and resources necessary into building new plants in the US or Europe with the added pressure of war on their doorsteps then i think you'd be surprised how quickly the rest of the world could make up for that loss in production. The way i see it its a big issue, but not an insurmountable one.

Taiwan has been an independent country since 1949, don't regurgitate the CCP line that this is in conflict. The CCP has never ever ruled Taiwan so it can not be a 'breakaway province'. And the acts of the currents president of Republic of China are unconstitutional, because their constitution calls for the unification of China, and that it's duty of every Chinese citizen.
