  • This documentary cover's Asia's involvement during WW1
What was Asia's role during WW1? How did China, Japan and Southeast Asia contribute to the war effort?
WW1 in Asia began with the siege of Tsingtao (Qingdao). The empire of Germany and Austro-Hungary defended their concession of Qingdao in Shandong province from the empire of Japan. Japan was victorious. Japan also seized other colonial possessions of the German empire in the Pacific, but the German raiders managed to evade Japan. Britain and Anzac would hunt down Maximilian von Spee's East Asia Squadron resulting in the battle of coronel and battle of Falkland islands.
The Chinese Labor corps were a significant part of the war effort for both the western and eastern fronts during WW1. China sent laborers to Britain, France and Russia. China eventually declared war on Germany in 1917. China was dealt the humiliating Twenty one demands of Japan and lost Tsingtao (Qingdao) of Shandong province, during the Treaty of Versailles. After WW1 concluded, China helped during the Siberian Intervention by sending a military force. Chinese forces also served the Red army in the emerging Soviet Union.
Japan and America found themselves allied during WW1 despite their tense relationship. This would heat up further during the Siberian Intervention when multiple nations were sent to help the Russian White Army defeat the Red Army.
French Indochina entered WW1 on the side of France and sent combat troops and labourers to the western front. This brought forces from Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam to many battles in France and the Balkans. The Kingdom of Siam (Thailand) entered WW1 upon its own accord as it was not a colonized.
Vietnam sent over 90,000 men to France during WW1 consisting of 5 combat battalions,15 transit battalions, colonial medical staff and colonial labourers.
Cambodia sent the 21e Bataillon de Tirailleurs Indochinois cambodgiens to the frontlines in France.
The Kingdom of Siam (Thailand) sent the Siamese expeditionary corps, the Army Air corps, the Army Combat Vehicle Corps and a Medical platoon

Really well done with this rather broad topic!
I learned quite a few new things - thank y'all.
Haha at 54:07 - your pronuciation of many names of things/places was rather...well, I'll let it slide~
I live in China now and have lived in Japan and Germany (and Canada and the US) previously, so let's just say pronunciation for non-native speakers of some (most? all?) languages can be a pickle.
What other future topics, you ask?
I'm curious about Russia and Alaska.
And after learning about the Germans leaving China for Chile, well anything about the west coasts of North and South America.
Perhaps more about European colonisation - both growth and demise - in the Pacific.
Did the Spanish end all their endeavours in the Pacific after the Spanish-American War?

Having now finished the entire episode, I can recommend shorter videos (not Shorts, by any means) of certain, particular theatres. Also now interested in more about Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand over the years.
      Good work, guys!

Thank you so much, the video is a compilation of older videos edited to be a longer documentary. Since making this I have made a large effort to better pronouncing Mandarin, but alas it is difficult haha. I am at the mercy of things like google translate for phonetics. As for further episodes, the channel was following a chronological order of China-Japan history 1830-1945, but now I am trying to do episodes on anything remotely related to the history of the Asia-pacific. Will be doing pieces soon on the Philippines, Malaya, India, etc, trying to diversify the experiences of people in the conflicts.
