I'm a long time friend of James Demeter who has known Ry from the beginning of time. I was at Jim's house circa 1990 and Ry was there with his guitar. He had recently switched out the PAF that Jim had given him years ago for a pickup from an old guitar a "foil pickup" Ry started telling us this was it, way better than a PAF he said back in the day those guys didn't have no PAFs in their guitars they had these. Ry was there to get his guitar's volume knob replaced. Jim told me to go in the amp room where his mac was setup and show Ry this guitar re tuning app... So here I was... teaching Ry Cooder how to use this application on the Mac that would let you change the guitar tuning and it would show you the different way to get chord voicings and also show you different scales in that tuning... pretty cool for 1990. I duped a copy of the program and gave it to Ry. He then said that's great but you still have to know how to play the guitar. Then I knew I had one chance to ask him a question so I asked him what is it like to play with John Lee Hooker. Ry said "the thing is John changes chords when he feels like it so you have to pay attention and change with him. guys who don't get it get fired quick". I do know that Ry used to get old amplifiers from theaters and give them to Jim and he's convert them into guitar amps in the 1980s. Unfortunately we then ragged on Stevie Ray Vaughn who had just played on the tonight show and had a bad tone (I think he was playing through a Marshall and had turned it away from him because it was probably too loud) Stevie died like a week later and I felt awful gossiping about him....

It would be really cool if you could try to achieve the tone just using inexpensive, mass produced pedals you can buy anywhere. Just as an experiment. Great vid ✌🏼
Buy a Zoom MS70CDR. They are really inexpensive, and have 140 effects, and you can chain up to 6 at a time. By mixing different effects in the pedal I've created oil can delay effects (with 2 echos + Vibrato, or with a single double delay that has vibrato modulation), as well as Vibratone style pitch-shifting Tremolo (Tremolo in sync with a Vibrato), random lo-fi tape wobble (3 Vibratos at different speed), and tons of other cool effects I could never afford to buy as stand-alone boutique pedals.
3:28 the whole secret to his sound might just be that VARIAC in the top right. It can only be connected to the amp - variac regulates the voltage to the amp. Is it on his pedalboard because he changes the B+ in his amp during the gig?
Hi thanks for watching. Its actually not a variac it was just built in the housing of an old variac. It splits the signal in 2 using 2 tubes and has a master volume to control the volume of the amps
@@TheGuitarShow living fairly close to NYC i've been lucky to see him a ton of times from solo to everyone of his bands and in very small venues.everytime is like a master class in pure expression.

A lot of Cooder's stuff is in Open D, although I have seen a couple vids where Cooder is playing in Open G. The guy in this vid here is playing in Open D also, at least at the start.
Great video, great tone. Quick question. If I have a reverb pedal already -- a Strymon, which I like -- wouldn't that obviate the need for some of these? Maybe a reverb pedal and a bit of distortion and just the "free the tone," say? thanks!
Yes of course I went all the way now and have Rys complete setup.. Check out one of my latest videos to see that. But yes, you can of course get very close with another set up
NIce playing. Would like to hear that OVerdrive pedal on is own too. I am still searching for my "overdrive" sound. Haven't found anything I am completely happy with.
@@TheGuitarShow wow...yeah ..lovely sounding pedal with the Strat. I have a Japanese Strat that I really like ..maybe one day I will come across one of those pedals!!!. I have a Custom Gibson ES335 reissue Fat Neck that I use mostly ....and still searching for an overdrive for that . Right now I have a Tone Burst Mesa that is not bad. I guess it is tweaking between the amp and through some other pedals that I might find "my sound"!!!. Its fun though trying different things..just got to keep the cost down!!! I had a Danish overdrive pedal that I heard on the Internet ...but ended up using it on my Acoustic guitar for solos...just turn down the overdrive alot and it acts as a boost..and gives it a nice sound when I play lead over something I have looped like Riders On The Storm!!!
As much as I love Ry Cooder and have been a huge fan of his for years, I really hate it when people use the word "best". Muddy Waters used to say "you cain't be the best, you can only be a good 'un". Tagging one guy as "the best slide player" leaves out other notables such as Sonny Landreth, and Dave Hole [edit: I originally forgot to mention Johnny Winter, shame on me!]; and also leaves out lap steel players such as David Lindley, Cindy Cashdollar, and Megan Lovell, dobro players such as Jerry Douglas, and so on. Let's just say they're all on the A-list, and leave it at that! By the way, when I saw Cooder play last summer, he was using a Premier 88 amplifier, a small Fender tweed amp, and two Standel amps. The Green Man preamp (housed in a variac) was on a pedestal, up off of the floor for easy access. [Another edit: I should have mentioned a few other good slide players: Arlen Roth, and Duke Levine, are both excellent players; and John Mooney is another one, whose touch, tone and note choices are decidly idiosyncratic ...]
Many thanks for your great comment yeah you are right about the best slide player but in my world hes the best lol. I love Davel Hole and yes steel guitar players are on anothet level!
@@georgeeldridge7954 , Derek Trucks is not really a favorite of mine....a good player but still very much in the Allman Brother's mode, albeit with some Indian influences. I wouldn't call him revolutionary anyway (though I quite like his wife, Susan Tedeschi, and have for years, she's a good guitarist and a very good singer). Sonny Landreth, on the other hand, has, in my opinion, raised the bar for what is possible from slide guitar; in a more just world he would be as famous as Hendrix. Cooder, of course, is a whole different kind of rootsy player ---- his technique may not be revolutionary, but his tone, and the emotion built into it, his "feel", is nearly impossible to ignore or deny. And without him, I probably would never have heard of, or listened to, blues originators and titans such as Blind Willie Johnson, Blind Blake, Tampa Red, Charlie Patton, Sleepy John Estes and so on. Nor would I have become a John Hiatt fan, which started because Cooder played on "Bring the Family"; and it was Hiatt's "Slow Turning" that introduced me to Sonny Landreth's playing......So I, and probably all of us, are indebted to Cooder.
So... DIY like Ry ! Other creditable musicians have conquered the challenge of producing their own recording after that just have a beautiful instrument and showthe world , like Martin Turner of the original WBA.
Question: I have a guitar with really worn and low frets. would that make it good candidate to use for slide playing? (a high action is best for slide?) Thanks
I have an idea. Have you tried to interview John Caruthers? I believe he was the luthier that put together his guitars. I've met him and he was Wonderful. Also he also creates his own line of guitars which are works of art in their own right.
Thanks Arnau! Actually that's a good question. Normally I am but I am actually using round wounds today on this guitar but I have flats on my other tele/coodercaster (the yellow one with the blue scratchplate).

The Guitar Show wow so probably tube buffered ABY - gonna start building clones today ;-)
@@zjokka let me know your progress!
@@pauldavies6037 It's not a variac; it's a splitter/pre-amp.
spot on...most excellent playing as always !!! bonus for the Ribot style playing..marc is one of my all-time favorites.
Thanks Scott yes i agree Ribot is a genius!
@@TheGuitarShow living fairly close to NYC i've been lucky to see him a ton of times from solo to everyone of his bands and in very small venues.everytime is like a master class in pure expression.
@@scottbookman I can imagine just when you think he has reached his peak he comes back and redefines the guitar player role and tone!
I think catalinbread also do oil can delay inspired emulated delay pedal
Cool sounds interesting i need to check that pedal out
I see a few other things in his setup including a Variac and a Moogerfooger MF-104 Analog Delay. No word on those?
Great point I'll detail those in a new video on my other channel. Ramon Goose
Funky stuff man
Thanks Brock!
hi. great playing !!! i have a question , does Ry use all 3 units at same time ? and every tune ? or has he got different times set for different toones and only uses a unit at a time ...............
That was really cool. Does Ry Cooder mainly play in an open D tuning? Was that what you had going there with the Coodercaster?
A lot of Cooder's stuff is in Open D, although I have seen a couple vids where Cooder is playing in Open G. The guy in this vid here is playing in Open D also, at least at the start.
Yes D tuning but RY plays in G and also standard . Thanks 🙏🎸
But yes, you can of course get very close with another set up
@@TheGuitarShow Did you get the Variac as well ?
Do you think the echo nugget is worth double v the future factory? I am doubting it the more I listen to you play.
Yes the echo nugget is a vintage like tone where the future factory is more hi fi - depends what you are looking for
I like the quiksilver
It's great Chris
the exact video I was looking for, thanks ! which strings and bottleneck do you use ?
Many thanks I use flatwounds 12s and a derek trucks slide
What are some good substitutes for those expensive pedals
Any delays will work - its more about the timings than anything
I’ve been playing lap steel lately, and trying to get good ambience without too much blur. Now I want to try this kind of setup!
NIce playing. Would like to hear that OVerdrive pedal on is own too. I am still searching for my "overdrive" sound. Haven't found anything I am completely happy with.
Love pedal eternity burst works for me
@@dezionlion cool choice!
here is the link - thanks: ua-cam.com/video/FxgvXzoKfxE/v-deo.html
@@jamesbond4633 I love the doors and great you found an application for the pedal rather than just sell it!
Best and/or greatest are two words that have never meant a thing to me, in any form of art. Opinions are one thing, subjectively speaking.
Mate what about derek trucks
@@georgeeldridge7954 great slider and amazing technique, but not a fan of his music, Ry is far more original and exploratory for my tastes.
Are those ™️ Ry Cooder Sandals?
ahhh I forgot to mention those lol
Any recommendations for a replacement for the hard to find quicksilver?
Let me think about this one
very cool again :-)
Thanks Robert
I’m trying to learn as much about tone as I can. Why the Variable Voltage Transformer, or Variac?
Its actually a Y - Splitter with a preamp/boost
I know BEST is a super relative term but, in the Pantheon of super slide guitarists... if you could ask THEM... they would all say Ry is the best.
David.... You the man!!!
So... DIY like Ry ! Other creditable musicians have conquered the challenge of producing their own recording after that just have a beautiful instrument and showthe world , like Martin Turner of the original WBA.
Thanks for the comment bro
Great sound! What's your tuning?
Question: I have a guitar with really worn and low frets. would that make it good candidate to use for slide playing? (a high action is best for slide?) Thanks
Yes higher action to start off with is better and you might be okay with the low frets
I have an idea. Have you tried to interview John Caruthers? I believe he was the luthier that put together his guitars. I've met him and he was Wonderful. Also he also creates his own line of guitars which are works of art in their own right.
Yes thats an excellent idea! Let me investigate and yes, I love his own designed guitars... One day i hope to have one! Thanks
Would you say that he’s going for that classic fender reverb or just depends what the surrounding gig is? Maybe a plate reverb?
Nice sounds and playing man! Are you using flatwound strings?
Cheers
Thanks Arnau! Actually that's a good question. Normally I am but I am actually using round wounds today on this guitar but I have flats on my other tele/coodercaster (the yellow one with the blue scratchplate).
Thanks for your answer. As a silde guitar player, your chanel is a gift, good job.
Keep it slidin’ man.

Doesn't Ry use flat wounds? At least on his slide guitars.
