Learn 2020’s Key Lessons, from Fisher Investments

Despite heavy stock market turbulence, Fisher Investments’ Investment Policy Committee believes 2020 offered valuable lessons for long-term investors.
In this video, Aaron Anderson, Senior Vice President of Research, explains that 2020 not only taught investors about COVID and how far governments would go to prevent the spread of a pandemic, it also reinforced how adaptable people, companies and entire economies can be in the face of adversity. The importance of the macroeconomic environment and performing top-down analysis was another lesson from 2020. “What drove companies down in February and March,” says Aaron, “wasn’t that suddenly they became terrible companies and management teams were awful. It was clearly the macroeconomic environment-the politics, the pandemic, the economic impacts-that drove companies down.”
Ken Fisher, founder of Fisher Investments and Co-Chief Investment Officer, also points to how well 2020 highlighted two common market tendencies. First, Ken explains that the market is a pre-pricer of widely known and widely understood information. Second is the market’s focus on the future, specifically between 3 and 30 months into the future.
